15 Standout Soul Food Spots to Try Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Kitchen Cray’s opening in 2013 marked a pivotal turning point in chef and owner J.R. Robinson’s career. At his Lanham, Maryland, restaurant, he served a contemporary take on soul food recipes to celebrities such as Janelle Monae and secured his placement as a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen. He recently expanded Kitchen Cray to H Street NE, where customers can find its signature buttermilk fried chicken topped over a mountain of french toast drizzled with caramel and vanilla sauces."

Service was amazing. She was so polite, engaging, and patient. I couldn't tell it was only her first week. The atmosphere was nice, with a good volume of music being played in the background. The food and the drinks were on point. I can tell they put effort into pleasuring my taste buds. The ox tail eggrolls are a must. Definitely the best I've ever had. We really enjoyed our experience. Thank you!

KitchenCray is a trendy casual dining with familiar dishes and laid back atmosphere. Alyss, our server was great. Hope she's there when we go back. Next time I'm going with a big group so we can all order something different to try. I can't quite give them five stars based off what I ordered. The she crab soup needed more crab and some crusty bread to make it great and the oxtail egg rolls had very little oxtail. As someone who's lived in the area for quite some time, I've seen many restaurants come and go in this location. The one that remains a constant is the sushi place next door. That's because the quality has been consistent. If this restaurant can do that without over charging they'll develop a loyal customer base. Also, enjoyed their signature cocktails.

I highly recommend Kitchen Cray the next time you're interested in an upscale take on brunch!! The food was AMAZING and beautifully presented. The atmosphere has a chill vibe and the huge chandelier adds a wonderful flare and opulence while you jam to the DJ. The staff were attentive and Mr. Make It Happen can even be seen walking around speaking with customers about their experience. So, the next time you're in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area I suggest giving them a try!! I know I'll be back for the Garlic Noodles with Salmon!!

Kitchen Cray was delicious!! I had the fried chicken jambalaya and it was seasoned to perfection 👌. The drinks are taste and strong. The area is spacious and welcoming for large groups. Packet friendly menu. I have no complaints. It would have been a bonus if the cheif/ owner did stop by the tables.

I got the catfish nuggets, deviled eggs and oxtail egg rolls with friends. All were great. Skye is an amazing waitress and the management crew are fantastic! I got the crab alfredo pasta. It was to temperature and good overall but needed more garlic, salt and pepper and it would have been a 10/10. I would def come back to try something new. DJ with the music on Saturday for brunch was very nice!

My server Alyss made this experience perfect! She knew her stuff and was very attentive. The food was 8/10! I got the crab fries which were sooo good! My girl ordered the crab cake pasta which was also very good, the crab cake was hitting but just needed more flavor on the sauce, would recommend this dish. I ordered the short rib pasta, and being transparent, there is an extra up charge for short ribs, and to me it was a bit salty. The short rib was flavorful and tender but the sauce in the noodles was a bit overwhelming for me. Overall though, this was a great experience from the vibes, the esthetics, the food. We will definitely be back. Big shout out to Alyss!

I really…really, really, wanted to love this place. We went on Sunday evening, just thinking it wouldn’t be super crowded like Saturdays around Meteo Atlanta tend to be. The day of the week shouldn’t make a difference as consistency is key. And I don’t want to be seen, I want to eat good food. It took an hour just to receive our ox tail egg roll appetizers! The manager took them off our bills which we appreciated. They lacked flavor and for $17 should definitely have more meat in them. The bar was out of a key ingredient for the drinks the waitress recommended. Ended up with an Old Fashioned which was good. The food…I had the Crab Cake Alfredo. Underwhelming. The pasta and sauce was ok, the crab cake was, I believe, undercooked. Too soggy. I’ve had true Maryland style crab cakes and that didn’t meet the standard (since it is supposed to be bay-inspired). My SIL had catfish and grits with “lump crab meat” on the top. Um, it was crab flakes and they were so dry. We were quite disappointed and unimpressed. I have a IG foodie page, just for fun. I won’t post there because I don’t like to bash and typically only post meals I enjoyed. So I’m posting here as constructive criticism. I’ll always give a place another chance, but it won’t be soon.

B-, it's a new restaurant give it grace. Atmosphere is nice, spacious doesn't feel like everyone is sitting on top of each other. Food is slightly over priced either increase the portions or lower the prices slightly. My catfish wasn't seasoned like the chicken, but the grits were 🔥🔥🔥. Oxtail egg rolls barely had oxtail but the flavas was on point. The Blueberry Margarita mint is good, id definitely come back. Service is lackluster but that's customer service in general these days. The manager(owner) checked in frequently tho which I appreciated.
