Kizami Sushi Review - Lincoln Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Kizami is always a solid option—and not just because all the other restaurants on this stretch of Lincoln Park are mediocre franchises. The sushi here is affordable and pretty good. While the signature maki are decent, they’re also a bit pricey, so sticking to the simpler rolls and nigiri is the best way to have some money left over to explore the long sake menu. It’s not big, but there’s enough space for a few small groups. Upbeat pop music livens things up, along with decorative touches like a faux roof above the sushi bar, a torii gate built into the wall, and string lights crisscrossing the ceiling like a light-up spider web." - John Ringor

Genuinely served spoiled fish for my take out order. I then called for a refund and the manager / chef told me he wouldn’t give me a refund unless I gave him the fish back. I had already thrown it away. He then demanded for my address so he could come to my house and talk to me about it before issuing a refund. Never experienced this. Go to Toro Sushi on Clark instead. Cheaper and significantly higher quality.

Google
Had the best experience! Service was incredible. It is a family owned business with people that want to keep the authentic experience of fresh fish and good rice. Delicious food

Google
Excellent service even late at night! Food was superb- casual yet elegant! Some of the best poke and crab Rangoon I've ever had. Rolls were fabulous, even the bathroom is charming!! Went there after a Steppenwolf show and was VERY delighted!

Google
Curious if Kizami has a new owner. Used to love this place, but portion sizes and quality have gone downhill. There was almost no fish in my roll - not sure what I’m paying for. Definitely lots of better sushi options in the city.

Google
A great sushi place in Lincoln Park! The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented. The drinks were refreshing, making for a delightful experience. Plus, you can enjoy both during Happy Hour from 4-6 PM!

Owner knows his stuff! Very extensive Sake menu. Sushi is first class excellent

Google
The following review may sound scathing but I mean it honestly, and not as a raging lunatic. The raw shrimp nigiri was solid that’s it…beyond that I ordered the golden sashimi set. This was the only time I have ever refused to eat sushi. Multiple types of nigiri tasted one day from spoiling. The scallop tasted like a rotten fish market (just what came to mind while chewing). This was the least fresh sushi I have ever eaten. I am surprised that it was brought out to us given the lack of freshness. Moreover, when considering this is the higher price premium set, it was insulting to pay so much for the worst quality fish I have ever eaten. The service is exceptional, but it can only mask rotten fish so much. Whats more disappointing is that I have been here a few times before and the quality was impressive let alone edible. This has been the only food review I have ever felt compelled to write. I hope it was just a really off day, but I won’t be wasting $80 again to find out.

Google
My favorite sushi go-to in Chicago, Kizami offers the perfect blend of consistently high-quality, well-prepared food, warm hospitality, attentive service, and a simply charming atmosphere. I love that it opens early for dinner, which better suits my body clock preference. And its reasonable prices are a plus!

Yelp
This was my first time going to Kizami and based on this experience, I will definitely be coming back! When I entered, the first thing I noticed was how cute and Japanese-inspired the whole place was. From wall decor, to themed chop sticks, the cutest street-style bar I've ever seen, and a bathroom that is actually worth going to. Our server was also extremely polite and helpful the entire time. I ordered drinks and the avocado roll off of the happy hour menu- which you do not want to miss out on. So many options for food and drinks and it goes until 6pm! In total, I tried the piña chata drink, M&M drink, baby godzilla roll, avocado roll, and sweet potato roll. The drinks were fresh and tasty (piña chata was pleasantly sweet and M&M was fresh). Even though I am not used to much sauce on the sushi rice, the sushi rolls were good and hit the spot. Kizami is definitely worth going and to fair warning, it does not have a huge dining area, so make sure to get there early for happy hour.

Yelp
We were seriously craving some good sushi, and since it's always hit or miss in Chicago, we're usually a bit hesitant to try new places. But we stumbled upon Kizami Sushi and were immediately drawn in by their mouthwatering sushi photos. We decided to make a reservation and check it out for dinner. This cozy little spot in Lincoln Park seats around 30 people, and while it's small, it's beautifully decorated and feels very traditional and intimate. Right away, we were impressed by the atmosphere. We started with the Shumai, which turned out to be some of the best we've had. Just a tip--make sure to eat it while it's hot, because it cools down fast and you'll miss out on how good it is fresh. For sushi, we ordered the Salmon Reunion, Hamachi Serrano, and the Godzilla Roll. All of them were fantastic, but the Hamachi Serrano and Godzilla were our favorites. The sushi was fresh, light, and packed with flavor--what we really appreciated was that nothing felt overly complicated or weighed down with too many ingredients. It was clean and well-balanced. They also have an impressive selection of wine, sake, and cocktails. We noticed a few interesting desserts on the menu too, but we were way too full to try anything else--next time for sure. Overall, Kizami Sushi totally exceeded our expectations. Great sushi, great vibe, and definitely a spot we'll be coming back to explore more of the menu.

Yelp
While staying in Chicago we ordered from this place on Uber Eats. Food was packaged well and really good. Ordered the teriyaki salmon which came with a salad and miso soup, the sweet potato sushi roll and steamed gyoza. Very yummy!!

Yelp
Took my friend here to celebrate her birthday and we had a blast! They have a great selection of drinks and menu options. We each got a variety of rolls and were happy with each of them. Our server was very attentive and even brought out dessert and a candle to my friend. The vibes were great - I hope to come back soon! Highly recommend Kizami Sushi for a dinner with friends or a date night.

Yelp
Nice place for Sushi and drinks. We were at a bar next door and stopped in for food, glad we did. The food was good, service was quick and she was really kind and patience explaining menu items. If you mention them on IG, you get a free edamame! :)

Yelp
Always wanted to try this place out and I finally did. This is not a huge restaurant so it maybe best to reserve ahead of time if possible or come early. The service was alright, our waitress was nice and came around when needed. The food was good. You can't go wrong with sushi! The drinks on the other hand were decent. The expresso martini could be better, but I'm not complaining. They had some interesting fruit cocktails as well. With the dim lights and good vibes around, everyone was enjoying their meal. Would come back again if I'm in the area!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time here! The sushi was excellent and the service was terrific! The ambiance was very nice as well. They helped us celebrate a birthday too! I would definitely recommend going here for a good meal and a nice time!

Yelp
I had one of the tastiest Maki rolls ever. The fried oysters are simply amazing. I will return to try more menu items.

Yelp
I heard great things about this place so it had been on my list for a while. I made a reservation a few days before, which I would recommend. It has a relaxing and casual vibe--good for a date night or dinner with friends. We were seated promptly. However, I think they were short-staffed because the service was quite slow. We did not order drinks because we were getting hungry after a long wait. We also never got our water glasses refilled. Overall the service was disappointing. We ordered 6 different rolls to share among the 4 of us. The Godzilla roll was by far my favorite--rich, flavorful, a little spicy, with a slight crunch. Also loved the fish trio and spicy tuna rolls. Pricing was pretty standard for Chicago, and it came out to about $30 per person including tip. If I were to return I'd get takeout for sure.

Annabelle K.

Yelp
We had such an amazing experience here. The owners were so lovely to meet and the sushi was fabulous. We appreciated the atmosphere and feeling the place gave us. Definitely telling all of our friends to check out this place!

Yelp
Solid sushi spot in Lincoln Park. I've been here twice - once on a Monday evening and once on a Sunday late afternoon. The Monday evening was really busy and we had a short wait for a table. Sunday was more recent and we got there soon after they opened and were the only ones at first (it got busier later) They have HH on food and drinks from 4-6pm. I got a roll, nigiri, edamame, and a beer. With tip, it was just over $30, which isn't bad. My friends had a variety of drinks and food and all enjoyed it. Service was friendly and prompt. It's not a huge spot so I can imagine there's a wait at peak times. Will def be back!

Ahnia K.

Yelp
Coming from California, in my opinion it's really hard to find a great sushi spot in Chicago. But after living in the city for over 3 years, no sushi compares to Kizami!! The rolls, the chicken katsu, gyoza, etc. are ALL delicious. You cannot go wrong here. The service is always great and it has really cute and cozy vibes.
google avatar

Ember H.

Yelp
I visited Kizami Sushi with my coworkers. We were looking for some after work snack and a place to sit down and talk. Kizami sushi is not far from our office. And the reviews seem good. Staff greeted us when we just walked in. Very friendly. We got beer, dragon roll, sashimi and gyoza. I think the beer is good. But the sashimi does not meet my expectations. It's a thick cut fish. But I think it's just ok. Gyoza is hard to eat. I like crispy Gyoza but not too crispy so it's easy to eat. To me, it's ok.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Kizami sushi was delicious and a blast. They were so helpful and helping us surprise a friend with dessert and candles for her birthday. They had the best california roll - definitely get real crab! If you've never tried eel before, you need to! The Chicago roll was delicious!

Yelp
Solid Sushi spot located in Lincoln Park. Every time I come here, the service has been friendly and quick. I do like their interior a lot. There's not much to it honestly, but the darker vibes with the string lights just makes it a perfect date spot in my opinion. They have candles at the tables and if you're able to snag a table by the window, it really is perfect to take someone here on a date. All of their sushi is pretty good overall from what I've had so far. I'd say my two biggest pros about this place is that they are open late. No seriously, they are open much later than a lot of Sushi places around. Chicago notoriously closes a lot of restaurants early which is extremely annoying being a major urban metropolis, but this place is the opposite. Craving Sushi at 11pm? COME here. The pro is that they are technically a BYOB establishment. They DO however serve alcohol, but if you have your own beer, you can bring it, just expect to pay a $1 fee per bottle/can you bring in. I think there is a corkage fee for wine as well, but not sure how much. Either way, that is an awesome perk. I'll definitely return back here if I find myself craving sushi pretty late. There's also a lot of bars in the area so it's a good place to walk around if you're in the mood for drinks elsewhere as well.

Yelp
This is the most unhappy of the happy hours. It is truly sad from the service to the food to the ambience. I'm not quite sure how this spot gets so many raving reviews, but as a true foodie and an avid yelper, I would not recommend this place at all. My bestie who has not had sushi in a long time was craving for some and since we were parked close by and never ate here before, we thought we would check it out. The happy hour runs from 4-5:45 but the prices were unhappy. I would say the prices were the same or even more than a normal sushi menu . The staff I believe were Thai gave us quite a lot of attitude . The sushi we ordered were drenched in sauce ( fire dragon and Chicago rolls almost tasted identical) The gyoza for happy hour was heavily deep fried and the shishito peppers were burnt to crisp. My bluefin tuna( happy hour $10) was very very unfresh( no sauce to hide the bad taste) The best thing was probably the seaweed salad!! The total came to 74 before tax! Not happy at all.
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
More on the Expensive side but really good! The seaweed salad was awesomely amazing and the supergreen roll or whatever was really tasty too

Illona L.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars, I would. Several months ago, we tried Kizami Sushi and loved it. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Today was hot, and it happened to be our anniversary, so we decided what better way to celebrate than to order in some sushi. What a disappointment!! We ordered several items: the Shumai was okay. The Gomae, which is usually succulent and sitting atop a sweet peanut sauce, had obviously been prepared long ago. All of the Maki rolls, including Tekka, Unagi, Shrimp Roe, and soft shell crab were also not freshly made. The seaweed wrappers were dry and rubbery. The fish and rice were not only mushy but FISHY!! One of the best things about sushi is the lovely fresh taste that it leaves in the mouth. This is not the case tonight. We are sorely disappointed, and the next time we are craving sushi, we won't be spending our hard earned money at Kizami.
google avatar

Sara K.

Yelp
Lovely local sushi spot in Lincoln Park! The Premium Nigiri Set was delicious but my favorite two items were the Shumai (shrimp appetizer) and the Salmon Reunion roll. The husband and wife owner duo are also the sweetest!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good! Not as good as Tanuki or Yellowtail but a great takeout option for when you don't want to cook!!!

Yelp
Visiting from Miami and was recommended this restaurant, it was a delight! The inside decor is homey, with beautiful delicate lights overhead, it's small and was busy when we arrived last night. We sat outside which sometimes I'm hesitant of because the service isn't always the same. However here it was perfect service. We ordered and our food arrived in a fair amount of time, the waitress was always attentive and so was the manager. I do have to say the waitress got my order perfect!! She even remembered to put sauce on side and the tempura on the side. Loved the service! I had the angry crab roll and the Alaska Roll. The angry crab was my least favorite because the crab was inside was fried, I thought it wasn't but other than that it was great portion, great taste with the berry rice which was a nice difference, the amount of crab on top was massive! It was a satisfying roll, just wish it was not fried! The Alaska roll was so fresh so tasty and a must have! It was perfectly balanced roll with a good amount and good quality. The fish was fresh THATS essential!

Kathryn B.

Yelp
I come to this place for happy hour and sit at the sushi bar. The service is a 10/10. I also always have a great conversation with the chef behind the bar. Every piece of fish I've had here is fresh and delicious. Highly recommend. Worth the price!
google avatar

Seth K.

Yelp
Truly excellent sushi in Lincoln Park. Small comfortable place with excellent service. We had a torched toro starter that was quite memorable. Rolls that were perfectly flavorful. The Chirashi was among the best I've had. Lots of fish in their assortment beautifully arranged. Also a very good selection of Japanese beers.

Yelp
We had a party of 6, and there was another large table that got seated after us. However, they somehow received service before us. Even they noticed and apologized because they thought they stole the server from us. In actuality, the server never came to our table except to provide water. When she finally did, she was very indifferent. We asked for a sake recommendation, and she said she'd grab someone else. I'm relieved that lady was friendly and took over. She ended up taking our food order, too. Despite the initial lack of service, fortunately, the food was good. We didn't see hand rolls on the menu, but they still made it for us. Probably one of the best spicy tuna hand rolls I've had! I can't remember the rolls we ordered, but they were okay. Nigiri was fresh. The green tea cheesecake was rich and delicious.

Yelp
Delicious! Had everything we were looking for and more! We sat at the small sushi bar which was perfectly intimate. We were well taken care of, wonderful preparation and presentation. Hopefully will make it back!

Yelp
Amazing! Portions are big and filling. It's good quality as well. Overall great food for good value

Yelp
Sushi was great and the bowl was great as well. I'm not well versed in sushi but the quality here was fantastic (confirmed by our Micronesian friend). They brought us a little cheesecake to celebrate a birthday. Very sweet and cool!

Yelp
I've been walking past this sushi place forever and finally decided to give it a try and I was blown away!! We started with the house salad / seaweed salad and miso soup that come with any cold entree. I decided to give the Tom Yum Soup a try and will be coming back..just for the soup...it has a shrimp paste which I have never had before but wow was it tasty. A little spicy though so wouldn't recommend if you don't like spice. The Thai taste bowl was AMAZING all the flavors worked so perfectly and salmon was fresh and melted in your mouth. Salmon reunion was tasty as well with so many different rolls to pick from it was hard to make a decision but glad I went with this as it was great and different from any sushi I have had before. They also have a wide variety of drinks to choose from we ended up going with the margs which was a great choice. Overall food was great with so many sushi places to try in the city it's hard to narrow down but this place is a must!!! Service was a little slow as with any restaurant but people were very friendly. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Likes 4/5 - Quality sushi - Decent prices especially the lunch chirashi donburi with miso soup and salad for $14 - Pretty sushi bucket $40 - Friendly staff - Hand sanitizer at table by the door Dislikes - docked off a star - Rice was a little undercooked and underseasoned so it didn't stick together and had a little bit of a raw chew. My bf used to work at Japanese restaurant. FYI, the place is small. We can during lunch and were the only customers but you should make reservations if dining in for dinner.
google avatar

Lori N.

Yelp
We had an amazing meal! Lucky they were able to squeeze us in. Very small place but it was some of the best sushi in the city. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Abby P.

Yelp
Kizami is a lovely little sushi shop and I'm glad I got to go there! I like the sushi that I ordered and I loved the vibe in there. My only qualm is that the service was pretty poor. I know they were busy, but the place is small and our group wasn't massive. We probably waited about 30-45 minutes before anybody even came over and asked if we needed anything. Then it took probably an hour to get any food. I mentioned this to our waiter, just in case we had been forgotten and he offered us free sake bombs which was incredibly kind and appreciate. Because of this, I would recommend this spot. I would just make sure you have time to spare!
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Highly recommend the sushi here! They are a dainty restaurant with meticulous attention to wrapping beautiful and tasty specialty rolls.

Yelp
Sunday night out with gf. This place is amazing. Sushi is so fresh. We ordered several dishes as you can see in the pictures . Highly recommended !! Everyone should give it a try this place
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and it was just the vibe we were looking for! Dark lighting and extremely nice staff. A little pricey, but hey you are getting sushi in Lincoln Park. The spicy miso soup was a must. I would come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place! Quiet. Cozy. Staff are so kind and attentive. Food is delicious! I cannot say enough good things about the staff. These people really go above and beyond. My kids love their teriyaki and my kids are picky eaters so I'm so grateful when I find things they like. I love their Mexican roll.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic food, ambiance and more importantly great service. I was visiting Chicago and came across this wonderful gem. The owner came to greet us and provide his knowledge of his sake collection and the back story on Kizami. Kizami, a delicious sushi place, w fresh fish flown from Japan, opened in January 2020. This was a dream for this young couple who immigrated to the US far from home. Shortly after the opening, the restaurant closed bc of the pandemic. I am so happy to see the restaurant thriving and the hustle and bustle of the waitresses with the beautiful display of sushi, sashimi, curries and pretty cocktails. Definitely a must try if you want a place w good food and fresh fish. What more can you ask for?

Brooke S.

Yelp
Incredible bathroom. It felt homey and peaceful. The lights will transport you to another space entirely.
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately this was not my favorite sushi. The rolls we tried were pretty average which isn't a bad thing but not a glowing endorsement. Their veggie gyozas were amazing though!
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
We loved the Angry Crab roll!! The scallops appetizer was a close second favorite. The spicy trio roll was good and the Alaska roll was just okay. The service was good and so would definitely go back. Quality sushi at a reasonable price

Yelp
Kizami Sushi ROCKs! I seriously LOVE this place!!! The fish here was super fresh and handled with care. The pieces were the quality that you'd find at a higher end sushi place. The restaurant was extremely thoughtful with following COVID-19 prevention guidelines. Everyone wore gloves and masks. Sanitizer was readily available at the host stand. The tables were properly distanced. The restroom was also immaculate! We genuinely loved everything here. We ordered Sanma and Aka Yagara nigiri. Everything literally melted in my mouth. Fire Dragon and Salmon Reunion rolls are our favorite rolls but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Very fresh fish and unique combos. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. She was always nearby when we needed something. We experienced no crowds or loud noises. It was just a very nice meal with a bit of mainstream music playing in the background. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place, all the staff were extremely nice and friendly as well. We left the restaurant thinking we absolutely had to come back! Thank you, Kizami Sushi!
google avatar

Genna G.

Yelp
This place is good. We started with the Shumi and I then ordered the chicken teriyaki and my friend ordered the shrimp teriyaki. Both entrees were good. A little expensive for lunch however in their defense, they do have a lunch menu with some sushi combinations with fair prices . Next time I'll try the sushi.

Yelp
Amazing! (This review is for people that -know- sushi, not the spicy mayo roll lovers) Patcha welcomed us right after they opened for the day, we were cruising by Chicago and with the new restrictions were struggling to find somewhere to sit. He had tables outside with warmers and we hesitated because it was cold and out in the street, but we are so glad we stayed. Just being able to eat in the heart of this neighborhood was a treat, enjoying the architecture of the city and the life happening around was part of the experience. The food was so fresh, delicate, beautiful presentation, and the way sushi is supposed to be served. He has a nice selection of sake, and he clearly has a passion for food and for the culture that he stellarly displays on the dishes. We loved everything about it and especially his warmth and energy. It really is a beautiful spot, clean, cozy, and the best sushi we have had in Chicago.
google avatar

Sohil B.

Yelp
Best authentic sushi in the area!! Great happy hour menu as well for drinks and food!
google avatar

Hailey B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite sushi spots in Chicago. The atmosphere is SO nice. When I've gone, I just ask the chef to make me whatever sushi he wants, and it is ALWAYS exceptional. The price point, quality of fish, and overall service are 10/10!
google avatar

Alvin P.

Yelp
Good but the price point & flavor power is comparable to other cheaper sushi restaurants
google avatar

Eunseok J.

Yelp
I got premium sashimi bucket shared with my partner and it was absolutely great menu. I could enjoy variety of sashimi with rice. I also ordered fresh wasabi because I thought this sashimi requires real deal! Sashimi was really well prepared and it provided great enjoyment.

Yelp
We came to Kizami only based on few excellent reviews we saw online since the place is a brand new spot and also opens early as opposed to many sushi places that start at 4-5pm. The place is small, nicely decored, and with open kitchen. I am assuming that reservation is needed on weekends and busy hours. We got there on Sunday for lunch and got a table right away. The owner or manager of this place was so nice and welcoming that we already liked this place without even trying their food :) The menu is clear and includes lots of choices for every avid sushi lover. We opted for two sets of rolls and some nigiri. Chef`s signature--very tasty composition of raw fish served on the rolls of berry rice which was fantastic. Mexican rolls--as we love spicy food, this one was so satisfying and fresh with just an adequate touch of spiciness made it an ideal rolls. Definitely to repeat. We finished up with different types of nigiri including salmon, tune, albacore and scallop. Every piece was delicious, firm and fresh but scallops were sublime!! I had scallops many times in crudos and sushi but Kizami scallops topped it all. I was told by the owner that they got it early morning so you could definitely feel that awesome taste. We could not resist and ordered an extra portion. I also like the idea of brushing the nigiri on top for this final umami flavor to exist right there. I wish they had the Uni but they ran out the night before which is a good thing but hopefully catch them next time. :) They are still waiting for alcohol license to be sold at their place but we were offered complimentary beers which was an awesome touch, thanks again!! I can assure you that this place has a very big potential to be one of the top spots for sushi in our city and I vote for that. We just cant wait to go there again and try other things, and scallops of course!!

Yelp
Food: 4.5 Service: 5 Cleanliness: 5 What a cozy new sushi restaurant, opened for about a month now! Friendly owners and an inviting atmosphere. Bright natural lighting in the morning, romantic starry string lights at night (i.e: the bathroom itself is lit up by string lights). Some notes: The Shrimp Avo ($8) was just okay, felt this appetizer was a bit skimpy. The avocados were cut into Rubix cube sizes lost beneath some greens, and the Shrimp pieces seemed like they were halved. However, my friend and I really enjoyed our Nigiri and Sashimi pieces! Definitely on the higher-end side, about .50-.75 cents more than other sushi restaurants around the area (though it is Lincoln Park!). We were also happy with our rolls Dragon ($14) and Salmon Reunion ($15)...perfect rice to fish ratio. For the two of us: $60 total. Overall, Kizami hits a home-run for beautifully plated sushi tagged with their unique taste. If you want a casual sushi getaway attended by friendly staff, check out Kizami. I'd love to come back and try other items! -- Suggestion: * Reprint menus to be smaller as there were a few items whited out or written in; the menu I had also had several stains. * Add light filtering shades as all the seats get sun-blasted during the day; we had to move to the 8-seater table in the back. * New choice of music, there were some 90's American rock playing that just didn't fit the vibe of the restaurant. And turn it down a bit? Tip: Make a reservation during rush hour: ~30 seats and currently BYOB. Parking: Street Pay-To-Park.

Yelp
Phenomenal customer service! Our hosts overheard our virgin knowledge of sake and came out with samples, without us asking, to try and ensure we selected a product we enjoyed. The chefs were friendly and also had great recommendations, while the quality was A1. Will definitely be coming back!
