Kkondae KBBQ - Review - Koreatown - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Kkondae might be slang for “grumpy old person,” but this Korean barbecue spot is clearly a place for people who aren’t afraid to let loose. There’s a 97% chance you’ll leave with a constellation of oil splatters on your shirt, and the space leans hard into the pocha aesthetic with metal tables, low stools, BTS songs on loop, and a few Jinro frog statuettes staring at you. The pork cuts are miles better than the beef, so the best bet is to order the first combo on the menu, which comes with belly cuts in varying thicknesses—thin strips that get crisp and chewy like bacon, and thicker slices with chunky layers of fat. The staff cooks everything for you on sizzling grills, including the kimchi that you should absolutely wrap each slab of pork in. Save room for the final boss of fried rice that they make with all the leftover porky juices. Food Rundown Frozen Pork Belly This cut is common in South Korea, and freezing the pork belly is meant to give it a snappy, chewy edge. Kkondae’s version mostly gets there, but we wish it were sliced just a tad thinner so it would crisp up more. We prefer the regular thin pork belly here, which cooks faster and gets to a better bacon-meets-samgyupsal texture. photo credit: Cathy Park Pork Collar The pork collar is the only thing in the pork combo that we wish we could skip. The meat is tough and dry, without that fattiness you want from a cut of pork. Namul Lunch Box Ignore the name—this isn’t a lunch dish (Kkondae doesn’t even open until dinner). It’s the fried rice finale, cooked right at the table at the end of the meal. The rice and greens come packed in a lunchbox-style container, and it soaks up the leftover pork flavor once it’s stirred on the grill. There’s no better way to close out a meal here. photo credit: Cathy Park" - Cathy Park

The side dishes were plentiful, and they even had a special dipping sauce that went perfectly with the meat — super flavorful! We got the beef combo, which was ¥89.9 (the pork and beef intestine combos are ¥79.9). Honestly, the set was a great deal. Ours came with four kinds of meat, a soup, and a “shake shake” rice — enough to feed about three people. We also added an order of beef tongue — fresh, tender, and really high quality. The staff helped grill the meat for us and the service was excellent. What really stood out was the vibe — the place was full of Korean diners, which made it feel super authentic. The blue frog mascot is adorable, and the decor gives off serious K-drama energy. It’s the perfect spot to chill with friends over soju and good food.

KKONDAE K-BBQ is a standout in Koreatown. I tried their combo 2 and was thoroughly impressed. The meat selection included thin pork belly, hanging tender, brisket, and bulgogi and fried rice. Every cut was grilled to perfection by a waiter who took care of all the grilling, ensuring each piece was bursting with flavor. If you’re looking for high-quality Korean BBQ with generous portions and a relaxed vibe, this spot is definitely worth a visit!

This place really changed my mind about pork belly. It was really the best pork I’ve ever had. So good I went twice already. The prices are reasonable. $22-35 range. These days all the kbbq spots are around $55-65 which is crazy. Any ways for the food: Must get is the thick pork belly. It comes out smoked and they cook it for you on the grill. The servers cook it for you till is crispy golden on the outside and tender on the inside. It’s the best pork belly you’ll ever have. Pork skin is a must order. Not to be confused with pork fat.. the skin is all collagen. It’s cooked till crishpy and chewy. Make sure you do it with the powder dip they give you. It’s sooo good. The marinated pork spare ribs were also juicy and very flavorful. It was not salty or sweet so it was perfect for me. The kimchi gooksoo was very refreshing and went soooo well with the meats, esp the thick pork belly. You can’t forget the K-Dessert. The Namul fried rice is a must at the end. They cook it for you and the portion is big so I ended up taking the leftovers home both times.

The mixed intestines here are so tender and perfectly chewy - best in town! I used to go to Ahgassi Gopchang, but I think this place will be my go-to from now on.
