Kneads Review - Fairfield County - The Infatuation

"Kneads in Westport is a bakery and cafe that takes itself very seriously. Founded by two former Blue Hill At Stone Barns sous chefs, all the flour used in their homemade breads and pastries is milled onsite from local grains. We find their plain croissants a little too whole-wheat-y, but love the sweeter options like the apple turnover and sticky pecan croissant, where the nutty flour balances the fillings. Their sandwiches are made on their excellent homemade sourdough bread—standouts include the ham and cheese dripping with melted rosemary butter, or the turkey melt with gruyere, apples, and bacon. The coffee is also always on point, so no matter what craving you’re trying to satisfy, you’ll find something at Kneads that hits just right. photo credit: Sam Schwab" - Chloe Zale

Google
I read through several reviews because I was surprised at the overall rating. Personally I found this bakery/cafe to be great. Yes it is expensive and yes it is not what you would get at a diner but that’s the point, it is a reimagined version of some staples and they are charging for quality ingredients (at least I trust they are). Bought a few baked goods to try at home, apple pie and cheese tart, both very good. We also stopped for breakfast and were very happy with what we had. You order at the counter and they then bring your food to your table. Condiments, napkins, utensils etc are self serve. I say all of this to set expectations. I like a casual place like this but some may not. We got a side of sourdough bread with butter and it was served in the best way possible for me. Lovely tasty toasted bread with a shmear of butter on the plate and the butter was dusted with flaked salt (perfection for me). The quiche was creamy with a rich crust and nice chunks of asparagus. Salad served with it was large and nicely lightly dressed . Pastrami hash was great. Large chunks if potatoes and some spicy peppers only complaint would be there could be a higher pasrami to potato ratio. Everything bagel was chewy and completely covered with everything seasoning, highly recommend. Overall really liked this cafe.

Discovered this place a week or so ago and have been back too many times to count already. Yes, owning a small business in America is expensive. Eating fresh Whole Foods is expensive. The prices reflect that. It is worth every cent. My omelette was so flavorful, it was truly the best omelette I have ever ate. The broccoli was delicious. I have had various pastries here, the bread (of course), sandwiches, and even ordered their Thanksgiving meal for pick up this week. I also love their little shop - great gifts to bring a hostess or someone who loves to bake. The people who work here are helpful and detail oriented. I appreciate these little places as they are far and few these days. Stop in and see for yourself!

Google
We found out new favorite place. Have to come back for lunch and pastries now. Came for breakfast and had the most delicious hash browns, mouthwatering smoked salmon sandwich and amazing coffee. It was busy and a little challenging to find a seat but worth the hassle. Definitely will be back.

Google
The staff was very nice, the food was mediocre at best. I think they're trying to jazz up something that doesn't need jazzing up. I always say don't fix it if it's not broken. It's a breakfast sandwich, doesn't need to be anything more. Yes, quality ingredients are a must. If you are trying to feel special, go eat here and get your instagram photo. If you're trying to have a good quality hearty breakfast, go to a diner. No value here

Google
The food is good. But not good enough to justify spending 26 dollars on an egg scramble and a pastry like I did. Think I'll just hit the deli next time 🤷🏿‍♂️

Google
Coffees from here are good Muffins and treats are good Unfortunately for lunch food, not worth the price head to Golds deli in town instead. Quality is good but as a wrap it’s very small and doesn’t come with chips or fries or anything. Good for a cafe for coffee and muffins but pricing for lunch does not make sense small sized wrap, no sides.

Google
$18 for a ham sandwich. Bread, ham and cornichons. Oh and some butter and they added horseradish. It’s not the price… it’s just not very good, for the price. The bread isn’t that great. Too many cornichons. Horseradish and ham aren’t the best bedfellows - a strong mustard would be better. It’s just blah with no flavor. Plus their wholewheat croissant? It’s just a big NO. Heathens. Never again.

Google
Quite comfortable bakery with a large menu selection of pastries, soups, breads and sandwiches/omelets.

Yelp
Avoiding NYC restaurants because I'm tired of waiting in line in the summer heat and humidity, and bidding for almost impossible restaurant reservations, for overhyped food, not even if the chef is The Bear's Carmy Berzatto himself. I'm only for instant, favorite foods gratification. Feels pretty good to drive around Connecticut, near NYC, with free and easy parking, eat and repeat. Kneads (my Perfect Bakery) and sister spot MOMU Ice Cream are equally delicious and Must-Try Places to Eat in Westport, Connecticut! Gimme more Kneads' impressive, deluxe Coconut Macaroon Masterclass -like a gourmet, fuchsia Hostess Sno Ball and Hershey's MOUNDS fantastical collaboration, embracing an attention-seeking, huge amount of organic shredded coconut! No need for other Coconut Macaroons. Kneads offers super sophisticated, elevated brunch benchmark options, and I no longer have to settle for subpar French Toast at area diners or any local restaurant serving obligatory brunch- namely the suck-so-much French Toasts at The Granola Bar, Jacob's Pickles South Norwalk, Caffe Social, Art Space Cafe, SoNo Harbor Deli & Cafe, and Post Road Diner. More than just a pretty face, Kneads even makes French Toast exciting! Their mandatory, very special Mixed Berry French Toast is uber flavorful thanks to sweet, creamy, buttery and dense, crafted bread; high-quality and locally-sourced mixed berries; freshly-made, not overly sweet whipped cream; and rich and smooth maple syrup from Woodstock, NY. And this is an exceedingly good breakfast. Sometimes you need a little Monday comfort treat and Knead's killer, dreamy Brownie is the most exquisite Brownie ever! It's a dense chocolate cookie bar, fudgy, moist, all chocolaty overindulgence Chocolate Guilt topped off with their cocoa-brown, sparkly malted milk balls from their MOMU ice cream; that's worth the guilt. Kneads' not just a Tomato Mozzarella Sandwich features all the flavors of that signature Italian-style sandwich with amazing, prime Italian, quality ingredients: 25-Year Barrel-Aged Balsamic Vinegar, in-season heirloom tomatoes, basil, sourdough, that qualifies as the best sandwich I ate this Summer 2024. For Brunch lovers like myself, Peach Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Chorizo Omelet, Sausage Patties, especially Hash Brown, are other musts from Kneads; they really are that perfectly amazing!

Yelp
We tried Kneads which had some nice indoor seating and patio seating. I got the chicken sausage sandwich which definitely had a lot of flavor and tasted very natural! The scrambled eggs came with a hash brown that tasted homemade, and a honeydew melon which was actually very sweet! We also tried their chocolate babka which was moist and yummy. Overall pretty good, probably which try something new next time! Service was pretty quick and the ambiance is nice for a quick casual sit down breakfast

Yelp
Ordered a $7 mocha with light ice. Apparently, that means you also get a "light" amount of drink. Didn't realize ice was the star of the show here--(Pic of drink is as how it was handed )

Yelp
Get the radicchio salad!! Makes a nice lunch, along with a good piece of bread. Good coffee too.

Yelp
Had a wonderful Saturday brunch here. After we ordered and grabbed a table, I noticed the salads on the table next to ours had wheat croutons. When our food came, my boyfriend's brioche was wheat, as was my sourdough toast. It was unexpected but everything was absolutely delicious. The breads we had did not taste like normal wheat to me - they lacked the heavy, earthy mouthfeel that wheat usually has. The portions were generous and everything tasted super fresh. The house made sausage was perfectly greasy with whole peppercorns embedded in the meat. The hash brown was dense and buttery. The char on the asparagus was beautiful. I read their website after brunch, and saw they only use non-commercially milled wheats and heritage grains. That explains why the baked goods were so good. We took home a chocolate croissant and a strawberry rhubarb pie and they were both divine. I was surprised at how good the wheat tasted, especially the croissant which was light and airy. I didn't know wheat could taste so good! Will definitely return to this cute little spot. Parking is limited which is the only downside.

Yelp
First and last visit. Trendy expensive relatively new Westport business which was unorganized with no order line when visited. Old timers know other better friendlier businesses within a ten-minute drive that aren't disrespectful.

Yelp
I came here with high expectations after reading Yelp reviews. I frequent a Fairfield bakery which is absolutely fantastic , but simply could not pass up the chance to try Kneads. Quaint, nice space. Seemed to be a good amount of eat in tables. Few tables outside. I got a baquette and 2 croissants. Croissants were good, flaky. Baquette--seemed maybe past it's prime, but should be o.k. tried it cold, warmed...just did not care for it. Bummer because I so wanted to. However, that choc chip cookie I eyed and bought at the very last second was the saving grace. First bite was good...second bite-still good but with this small ball of explosion and sensory awakening on my tongue which shot straight to my brain saying, "eat more!" Which ended with, "why did you not buy all of these???!!!" Won't be back for the baquette, but if ever in the area I will stop by for these cookies!

Yelp
This is one of the hottest breakfast/brunch spots in Westport! A lot of the pastries feel a bit more rich, and frankly, grainy than you may be used to, but that's because they're all whole-grain! Don't skip out on the savory prepared menu items because I think that's where Kneads really shines for me.

Yelp
Breakfast / brunch here is genuinely excellent. My rotation of like 5 brunch places in the Westport / norwalk area has now dropped down to basically just here. You can tell the amount of care the chefs and staff put into everything. The food is farm-to-table fresh, and the menu then is also seasonal. This means favorites such as the sweet corn chorizo hash get replaced with what becomes new favorites like the sweet potato hash w/ bacon, or the spelt pancakes which got replaced with pecan waffles with bourbon toffee. The lattes and other drinks are also solid, and the baristas are remarkably friendly. The chef/owner couple--Brittany and Daniel Moreno--also have a storied food background and a fascinating story. All in all, I'm glad they brought all of this to Westport for us to enjoy. (Been meaning to write this for a bit, my pictures don't do the food justice)

Yelp
You have to love a bakery that buys its own grain and then mills and grinds it into its own flour. That's dedication to quality control. You will love Kneads for so many reasons. First of all, they have a great breakfast menu with eggs, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches and granola. I spied a few unusual items on the breakfast menu - ever see a Catskill Smoked Salmon Sandwich or a Grilled Asparagus Scramble before? For lunch they have four sandwiches and another unusual item, namely an Oyster Mushroom Tartine. We went there for some bakery treats and were quite impressed with the terrific variety of the sweet and savory breads and pastries (Croissants, Pear ginger scones, Banana chocolate walnut muffin, Apple turnover, cookies, a Chocolate cherry hazelnut biscotti, loafs and cakes. It was hard to narrow down a selection, but we went with a few chocolate macaroons and an amazing looking chocolate babka. The macaroons were good, but the babka was GREAT a huge loaf full of flaky and chocolatey decadence. Plain outstanding.

Yelp
Fantastic high quality and flavorful food in an upscale casual setting with in/out-door seating in a quaint and vibrant Westport neighborhood. Ordered the Roast Beef sandwich and "Burrata/Peach & Heirloom Tomato Salad". All items had a great balance of fresh ingredients, flavors and textures. The horseradish vinaigrette on the roast beef sandwich was a perfect balance of tang and flavor. So happy to have found Kneads, the helpful staff and owners who have created a destination bakery/cafe.

Yelp
This was my first time at Kneads because I am passing through Westport today. The service was great! The woman who took my order was so nice! I got the iced americano which is very simple but still tasted excellent.

Yelp
I love this place! That's an understatement-- I live in Boston, I literally drive back to see my family and visit Kneads. The chocolate chip cookies are the BEST. Breakfast Sammies are all amazing. Absolutely get the hash browns! Service is amazing and the setting is awesome!

Yelp
3 or 4 not sure... But have only tried their croissants and ginger cookie. I went here soon after they first opened a few years ago and our baked goods were all very good. The last visit the croissants were way over baked. The interesting thing about their baked goods is the flour they use -- it is a darker whole grain? It makes for a different flavor and texture than other bakeries. Love that they sell quarts of Arethusa Farm milk-- and they don't jack up the price like crazy!

Yelp
We stopped in for an impromptu biscotti and coffee midday on Saturday. The menu is not overfilled with choices, which I kind of liked. I had a decaf, vanilla, oat milk, decaf latte, and my girlfriend had a similar cuppa, but caramel. Both were wonderful. The biscotti was soft, which was a surprise. While it was more a cookie than a biscotti, it was rich and enjoyed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The table was large enough for our small board game (always play a game when we hit a cafe midday). Will return.

Yelp
You get what you pay for here. You might spend a bit more but it's so good. I worked out the day before and my body was aching for protein from a natural source. So, I decide to get the grilled steak sandwich for lunch. I was completely satiated, sore muscles took it all in. The steak was tender and beefy, no sinewy parts that's not good in a sandwich. The grilled vegetables were done perfectly, sorta al dente so not limp but not raw. The chimchurri sauce was just right on the toasted sourdough (probably slathered with butter too, but hey! It's amazing!) Anyway, just amazingly good for lunch!! I'll be back for the protein fix when my body screams for it, totally worth it.

Yusuf R.

Yelp
Easily the best spot for a chill sunday breakfast / brunch. The egg sandwiches are amazing - the bread is amazing, all ingredients are carefully chosen (the cheese, the farm eggs etc). The other sandwiches are amazing too - we had the ham sandwich and it comes on this whole wheat baguette which is crunchy and delicious, the ham is not your usual cheap boars head tasteless ham. great coffee and really chill atmosphere inside.
google avatar

Yelp
I like this place- I really recommend their baked goods. They are very delicious. I got a bacon egg and cheese sandwich but it was a little too salty for me- I think another egg would have helped to cut the saltiness from the bacon but it came with only 1 egg. That was disappointing as it was very expensive for a breakfast sandwich ($9). The croissant it was on was flakey and buttery. I also got another baked good that was very tasty- it had almond paste and fruit. There are a lot of seats outside and they bring you your food quickly. Parking can be tricky right by the store but you can park in other areas around there like near the bridge.
google avatar

Tony G.

Yelp
The almond croissant against which all others should be judged. Chef's kiss. Also their baguette is fantastic.
google avatar

Donald N.

Yelp
Kneads improvement. While it's nice to have a bakery in Westport, I'm not quite sure if this one is the answer. Very limited selection, only whole-grain - no proper French baguette - and everything is peculiarly over baked and dark.Their offerings definitely could use some color. Their gluten-free options seem to only include items that are naturally gluten-free, like a macaroon. Thats like labeling a house salad vegetarian. The awkward space configuration doesn't help nor do the $16 sandwiches. A few well-thought-out, yet easy changes, could make this a success and a bakery Westport deserves.

Yelp
Thank you! This is just what the town needed, a great bakery. That said, to call Kneads just a bakery is to overlook some of its shiniest gems. What gems you ask? Well, the soups for starters. The mushroom bisque and the brisket chili are just two of my favs, but many of them are excellent. The food also has game with strong players like the grilled cheese with raclette and the French toast with- who cares! It was friggin' awesome and I don't want to even think about how many years it probably just took off my life. Oh, and then there's the bakery. So this is where things actually get a bit hit and miss. Because everything is made with whole wheat, I give it a meh on the baguette and the croissants. But the levain is worthy and the chocolate chip cookies are insane- and with their coffee? Dangerous. The short of it, if you haven't been yet, you need Kneads.

Yelp
Best bread in Connecticut. Seriously. Masters at wheat. The croissant, baguette and scone were all perfection. Freshly ground flour with all the nutrients intact adds a new layer of nutty flavor to a healthier item. Coffee was top notch. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Run here now and ruin yourself for any other baker, then Take home some flour to up your home bakers game.

Dennis C.

Yelp
Love love LOVE kneads. Excellent coffee, baked goods and food. Highly recommend. Barista gets two thumbs up!!

Sol N.

Yelp
Food is great. But service is OUTSTANDING. Love kneads! The barista is always so polite and attentive.

Yelp
Great addition to downtown Saugatuck! The pastries, bread and coffee are all great. We live close by and often come here in the morning for coffee before our walks. Everything is fresh and they have a great and friendly staff

Nessie Q.

Yelp
Probably not all bad but the hot chocolate I got kinda tasted like they heated milk up next to a chocolate bar and called it good instead of actually putting chocolate in. Very odd. Also first time I ever considered a Whole Grain Croissant which wasn't that bad but my god was it not that good. I'm sure the coffee's fine but the hot cocoa is a hot nono
google avatar

Yelp
This place has fabulous food BUT please pay attention to the rest rooms. Nothing is worse than not noticing there is no toilet paper until too late. There is no excuse as they seem to have a large staff. Great cappuccino. And the baguette sandwich was terrific.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Kneads earns its five stars, in all ways. Magnificent coffee, incomparable almond croissants ... today, a chilled asparagus soup and amazing smoked salmon sandwich, VERY ample portions. Also, we had a birthday girl in our midst, and Kneads had baked a special item just for her. The folks who work there are knowledgeable and attuned to their customers. The indoor dining room is always inviting, and the outdoor tables are perfectly spaced. Kneads should have a long run in Westport!

Jessica C.

Yelp
We live nearby and frequent Kneads. We are never disappointed by their high quality menu and friendly/familiar staff. While their prices are on the higher end, it is worth every penny. Every ingredient is fresh and thoughtfully crafted. Flavors are unique and incredible. I cannot recommend enough.
google avatar

Savith K.

Yelp
Excellent Bakery!!! We live in Redding,CT area and every Saturday we take a pilgrimage to Kneads. Though all of their pastries are delicious but their breads are REAL STAR especially Levain...hard dark shell outside and soft, chewy inside.
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
I ordered the soft scramble with asparagus and sourdough bread. Delicious! You can tell they use quality ingredients. I got an iced latte as well. Great coffee! I'd like to try their lunch as well as their menu looks great. They have plenty of seating outside too.

Christi L.

Yelp
We have been here for breakfast and lunch and both times have been wonderful! Delicious bacon and egg breakfast sandwich and great salads at lunch. I highly recommend this place!

Valerie S.

Yelp
Ordered choco babka french toast and chicken sandwich along with choco, almond, and plain crossiants, plain and olive baguettes, and threw in earl grey merginues and hot chocolate for good measure. Everything was delicious. I wished they put the syrup on the side for my french toast since I did a to-go order and it was a bit soggy and too much syrup for ny likening Otherwise, chicken sandwich and earl grey merginues stood out the most. Hot chocolate wasn't that sweet and the chocolate used was high quality, which was great. I can't wait to try the other pastries and scrambled eggs in the future.

Beth H.

Yelp
Lovely place, great-looking menu and nice service. Excellent barista. Admire the ethically sourced grains, BUT a small word of warning - if you're looking for a traditional French-style croissant or pain au chocolat, this ain't it -- they're wheat. Sacre bleu! You may want to choose something else!

S.T. C.

Yelp
Been there 3x. It's really awful. Food is not good at all. Their bread is maybe mediocre. French toast is like thick mush in a horrible grape jelly sauce. Coffee lukewarm. People are so nice BUT can not go again. Gave it a try but really hard to believe they are still in business
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, bakery, and they bake all their own stuff in house and mill their own grains. I've been once and can't wait to go back.

E Y.

Yelp
This bakery, restaurant, takeout-plus is a real gourmet gem in a desert of mediocrity! They excel in making the most perfect breakfast and lunch dishes: freshest ingredient, original combinations of exceptional components such as house-made chutneys and jams, local meats and cheeses. If you ask politely, they will also cater to your individual requests. Real cappuccinos made on a professional Italian espresso machine. Their desserts are excellent too and very balanced in their glucose content--Just sweet enough. Very convivial combination seating of comunal and individual tables, all in a beautiful, tasteful room. They also have heating lamps to keep you coming back until Thanksgiving. Great meeting place for a weekend breakfast or lunch with family and friends. No dining yet. Let's keep our fingers crossed for an expanded experience that includes dinner.

peter s.

Yelp
We moved to westport from brooklyn and have been looking for good bakery. Hands down, this is the place to go for baked goods around Westport - bread, baguettes, croissants, various pastries... SOOO much taste. We go every week to stop up on baked goods.
google avatar

Margaret B.

Yelp
We've eaten here five times outside in December and January. They have heaters. EVERYONE! Should stop by just to try the sausage sandwich and the oyster mushroom eggs. The breads coffee etc. are delicious too.

Rick V.

Yelp
Really high quality food and a comfortable upscale seating area to enjoy it. Creative take on old fav's...for example I ordered a bacon egg and cheese and got an open faced croissant with (in addition to the bacon and egg) a cheesy cream sauce, a small amount of salad with salad dressing on it, etc. and it cost me 10 bucks! That said, it was quite good. Friendly competent staff keeping things clean and bright. Dropped a star for high prices. I would assume it's great for take out baked goods and other specialty items. Just be sure to bring plenty of dough (pun intended).

Mike S.

Yelp
Been here a few times now. Staff was wonderful. Croissants and babka were great. Really liked the pear-ginger scone. Outstanding baguette. Best olive ficelle that I've ever had. Only lunch food I have had was roasted garlic soup which I loved. All in all, a great addition to the area.

Kristen C.

Yelp
Though the staff is warm and friendly, the baked goods that we ordered were not even close to tasting as good as they looked. It is a very expensive bakery for food that is meh.

Emma O.

Yelp
Amazing egg and cheese sandwich and delicious coffees! Highly recommend coming here for breakfast or lunch.

Dorian M.

Yelp
The absolute best breakfast and lunch spot. This place is beyond special. Every single thing is out of this world delicious and fresh. This is how we were all meant to eat.
