17 Homegrown Burgers to Try in Denver

"The burgers at this new Avanti stall may start with grass-fed beef from Colorado, but they end up spanning the globe with toppings like queso and chorizo, hoisin ketchup and kimchi–bok choy slaw, or smoked provolone and truffle oil (just to name a few). That said, the bacon- and egg-topped brunch version on an English muffin stays in everyone’s comfort zone." - Camila Navarrette, Josie Sexton, Paul Albani-Burgio, Ruth Tobias

Went with a friend to the food hall they are in. I was drawn to a chipotle chicken sandwich even though I felt like I should get a burger since it’s even in their name. Decent sandwich. Wish there had been more chipotle sauce on it though. Ok fries. Paid for the house made ranch. $0.75 got a tiny side of an oddly brown sauce. Tasted like it was half pickle juice. FYI I don’t like pickles! Friend liked his burger and liked the sauce I had bought. Surprise, surprise he loves pickles but agreed that it didn’t taste like ranch. Will be back to try burger next time. Rated service and atmosphere as average since order taker seemed bored and the food hall provided the atmosphere not the restaurant counter.

Google
I’ve been obsessed with smash burgers this past year, not only in finding the best in Denver but also perfecting my technique at home. I tried their triple triple bacon smash and it’s right up there with Twans for the best smash burger in town. Perfectly laced and juicy, bun was on point, perfectly topped to highlight and not overwhelm the burger. Definitely better than I can do at home.

The girl that was working there yeah was very rude, I was holding my 1 year old babygirl and I went up to the counter just waiting for my order, when she asked me if I needed anything , I just told her im waiting for an order, she very rudely told me that "she already told my friends that it was going to take a couple more minutes" I didn't not like the way she responded back to me at all. I was in no rush at all either, I was there with my babygirl, I was going to respond back to her in the same tone but I was there holding my babygirl, I wish I didn't experience that with my babygirl or else I would have said or done something. I will never come back there unfortunately.

The KA fried chicken sandwich was so good. Fries were awesome as well. Food was 5/5. Gave 3/5 due to the attitude I received when I asked for the coleslaw on the side. I like and appreciate the taste both foods separately. I don’t need to be asked, “Are you even going to eat it if we put it on the side?” The sandwich comes with the coleslaw. Just put it in the side like I asked. Don’t need the snarkiness. I loved both.

OMG, You Have to Go to Knockabout Burgers! Seriously, stop what you're doing right now and add Knockabout Burgers (3200 N. Pecos Street in Denver) to your travel bucket list. This place is not just a burger joint; it's a culinary experience that absolutely blew my mind. I'm still trying to figure out how Chef Ricky and his team make simple comfort food taste this ridiculously good. The Grilled Cheese the best I have ever had. Okay, let me start with the star of the show that has ruined all other sandwiches for me: the Parmesan Crusted Grilled Cheese. I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the best grilled cheese we have ever had. It's got this magical, crunchy Parmesan shell on the outside that gives way to a perfect, molten blend of cheeses inside. It’s savory, it’s decadent, and honestly, I wanted to order a second one before I even finished the first. You cannot skip this! A Chicken Sandwich for the Ages And while they're called "Knockabout Burgers," do not sleep on the chicken. Their Chicken Sandwich is just so, so good. The chicken is perfectly cooked—super tender inside with that satisfying crunch on the outside. It’s seriously a top-tier sandwich that could hold its own against any of the famous chicken places out there. The Must-Have Side Quest Speaking of cannot skip: you must get the Garlic Parmesan Fries. These are not your average side of fries. They are perfectly crispy, tossed in a fragrant, savory mix of garlic and Parmesan that makes them completely addictive. They’re the kind of fries you keep reaching for until the basket is mysteriously empty. The Secret Weapon: Scratch-Made Sauces Here’s where Knockabout truly shines and shows they care about every single detail: all their sauces are made from scratch. You can instantly taste the difference. We tried a couple, but the absolute winner for us was the Honey Mustard. It was perfectly balanced—a little sweet, a little tangy, and just unbelievably creamy. It made the fries, the chicken, everything taste better! My Final Thoughts: Go immediately. Get the grilled cheese, the chicken sandwich, and those garlic parm fries. And definitely stock up on that phenomenal honey mustard. Trust me on this one—it’s a total knockout!

Google
I love coming to Avanti and have tried most of the restaurants, but Knockabout burger is my favorite. The bacon cheese burger is super good and the bacon is high quality. The garlic parm fry are also a must in my opinion. If ypu at Avanti this is the place to eat.

Google
Very poor customer service experience! There was a lady working there all alone yesterday afternoon, who was incredibly unpleasant and very rude to encounter. She did keep mentioning she was the only one working, so my party and I felt pretty bad for her. But still that doesn’t give her the right to be completely rude to strangers for no reason. Overall, she did amazing on our food! Just wish our first experience could’ve been better. Was really iffy about even leaving a review since it could’ve just been a bad day but 2 different people experienced the same encounter with her so this was extremely upsetting. I hope the management team could resolve this for any future customers.

Google
Loved the fries but the vegetarian burgers were greasy and heavy. Service wasn’t great either. ✅ Loaded Crispy Ka Fries ▪️Veggie Knockabout Burger ▪️Goat Cheese & Caramelized Onion

Yelp
Environment!! This whole place is fantastic. Knockabout is one of a few restaurants in a commons area, in a fun and interesting part of Denver. Great views and atmosphere. Good beer selection. And the burgers at Knockabout were outstanding - perfectly cooked, piled high with fixins, and so flavorful.

Yelp
Well we'll. In my last post I ranted about the terrible food. Management reached out to me via email and blamed Uber Eats for Knockabout Burgers sending out DRY, burgers with no cheese and 3ish French fry's! Who that? Knockabout Burgers does..Cringe

Yelp
The special here really jumped out at me, so I had to give it a try. It was a Curry Tempura Fried Chicken Sandwich. Overall, I'd say it was good, but I think I was hoping for more curry and it was mostly sweet chili sauce. The piece of chicken I got also was a bit grisly, but that happens sometimes. There were a lot of other things on the menu that I wanted to try, so I'd love to go back.

Yelp
Knockabout burger is a vendor within the Avanti Denver food hall. Avanti is a very nice space but can get quite crowded during peak hours. I placed my order online and the food was ready very quickly. I got the goat cheese and prosciutto burger with parmesan garlic fries. Both the burger and fries were excellent! The burger's flavor profile was balanced perfectly. I do wish there were a couple more burger options, especially something with spice. However, I highly recommend this spot for a quality burger if you're in the LoHi area.

Yelp
This place is inside the avanti on the second floor. The food takes a while to cook. This is also the kind of place that stabs your burger with a tooth pick and charges 20 dollars including the fries and shake... it's blasphemy in my opinion. The service is fair for what this place is. It's a food stall in a huge cafeteria you just get your own food and put your own dishes away. Also I'm not sure what the point of tipping at any of the food vendors in the avanti is when their custodial staff who are actually out and about cleaning are most likely not associated with each individual vendor. The service is not dissimilar from McDonald's/ Burger King. You order your food, you pay, you wait for your order to be called, you sit down and eat, you toss your trash and out the tray away, and then the custodian disinfects where you were just sitting. Now to the food. It's a standard burger with house sauce. The burger isn't too big and it's not too filling. The house sauce is also about the same as Freddy's fry sauce. The fries are also not much to write home about, crispy and salty, maybe a bit better than Burger King fries. The real champion of the meal was the butter butter milk shake, it's exactly what you expect it to taste like. It's a really good milk shake but not good enough to save the meal. After this I also went to the pizza place downstairs to eat a pizza to fill me up and I still was not full. For ambiance we gotta just review the avanti. We happened to go on trivia night and it was packed but no one was participating in it. It feels like a bad high school cafeteria, not enough seating, broken furniture, odd dining table choices, awkward seating positions when available, dimly lit, "open air" second floor space is cramped and crowded. Getting a beer though is not hard here. I understand that this place is a food eatery that is set around socialization while dining but it does a very poor job at it. Also parking in this area is terrible and Denver has awful public transit, getting here is painful and quite annoying.

Yelp
Best comfort food ever. Tried for the first time tonight! Will be returning for sure. Highly recommended

Yelp
I have been here a couple times now and both times my burgers were fantastic. I have gotten the breakfast burger, the bacon cheeseburger (make it a double), and the latest one the burger of the month. This one had cheese curds and a butter bacon marinara on it. OMG!! I highly recommend upgrading your fries to the garlic Parm for an extra 75 cents. And get the Knockabout sauce for dipping. They also have a rotating shake flavor. They do have other options besides burgers including chicken, and vegetarian options and gluten free buns! Definitely check them out in the upstairs area of Avanti.

Yelp
Ordered Colorado hot chicken sandwich that came with a side of fries. The sandwich was great, although not super spicy. Fries were done perfectly!

Yelp
Don't even bother coming here. Bad customer service and bad food. Took a long time to get my order too. Deff go somewhere else

Yelp
I realized that I can't invite friends to Avanti F&B for "BRUNCH" anymore because there's not really any brunch-sounding food options. That is, except for the Brunch Burger at Knockabout Burgers! It's located right when you walk upstairs (across from the bar) and they have a decent menu selection, accommodating more dietary restrictions than most burger joints I've seen. The one time I ate here, I got some standard cheeseburger with hatch chiles, but the whole thing tasted like grease. I was confused by the lack of flavor. The garlic parmesan fries were good, though. I'd be willing to try this place one more time. How could I not when they use ingredients like fried prosciutto, black truffle oil, and kimchi slaw? Plus there's shakes that involve peanut butter! While I didn't enjoy my burger (and they actually take a LONG time to prepare) they've been accommodating to people who have special requests, which I appreciate. Not much else to review since the seating and drink situation is on the Avanti side. All that is fantastic. Definitely after some happy hour or evening beers, I could see myself craving a burger, so we'll see how that shakes out next time!

Yelp
The burger had too much going on. Too much lettuce. The aioli didn't go with the goat cheese. The bun was a little too big and a little burnt masking the flavor. The fries were too salty and too crispy. Yes apparently too crispy can happen.

Yelp
Only giving 2 stars because of the location. Avanti is great with a good atmosphere and drinks. But knockabout serves chicken tenders on bread with an overwhelming amount of sauce that almost renders the sandwich inedible. The service was also disappointing as the checkout bro was not welcoming or polite at all.

Yelp
This was our first time to eat from Knockabout Burgers. We are always looking for custom burgers and we found this close to us. We ordered online and something about the chicken burger sandwich called to me. I was not wrong! This is the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. First, it was HUGE! The chicken was not ground or pressed into a patty, just natural shape. The breading was thick and ultra crunchy crispy, and very tasty. The chicken was juicy and tenger. It was dressed in a slightly sweet cole slaw that fit the flavors perfectly, and pickles added a contrasting tartness. The fries were tender on the inside, and crispy and expertly seasoned. We have found our new burger home. Don't miss this restaurant. Even if it's a drive, it's worth it.

Yelp
Burgers are absolutely delicious! Do yourself a favor and get the Brunch BEEF Burger - you won't regret it. The burger itself comes with a juicy 1/3 lb beef patty, crispy bacon, a perfectly cooked sunny side egg, crisp lettuce, a juicy tomato, and some dank sauce on a buttery brioche bun. I would say the only downside is the service. When it gets busy, it can take awhile to get your food. Besides that, everything is top notch. Overall a great experience and I'll have to go back again sometime so that I can try some of the other burgers!

Yelp
I would've done ridiculous things for a milkshake. It's pretty late. The man at the register could tell how bad I wanted one, and so he made one for me! 5/5 stars for him helping.

Yelp
In town on vacation from Northern California. All of Avanti F&B is a cool, creative, and communal dining experience. Knockabout Burgers us CRAZY GOOD and even had me coming back three times and a one week vacation. The prosciutto burger with a gluten-free bun it's so good. If you have to eat gluten free this a bun is a blessing :) Quite possibly the best gluten-free bread I've had. The chive aïoli on this burger was icing on the cake... or burger :-) Seriously check out this burger spot.

Yelp
Ordered the KJ chicken sandwich.... SOOOO good. It comes with a house made coleslaw that is to die for! The sauce is so good as well, sweet but with a slight kick. It came with a side of fries and was very well priced for what I got. The sandwich was so big I cut it in half and was able to make 2 meals out of it! They had a self service option to place the order and it made it so simple. The food came out quickly and was so hot and fresh.

Yelp
We just had lunch delivered to my work. I ordered a mushroom provolone burger. I got a mushroom guacamole burger. It was ok. But it wasn't mine. I would Love to get a mushroom provolone burger sometime.

Josh M.

Yelp
Terrible service, Ricardo (said he was the owner) made us pay 4x for the dipping sauces. Recharged us .87 cents multiple times on a credit card for a bill we already paid for. His co worker shrugged his shoulders behind him almost confused as to why he was charging .87 cents. Overall dry chicken, terrible owner. Would recommend to avoid.

Yelp
Wow! Best burger in Denver. The employees are Great! This is a must have burger and a great place to hang with friends ps Love the little smiley face.

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Astonishingly high quality and tasteful signature (regular / Knockabout) cheeseburger. Burger construction was near perfect: no patty sliding around. Grease ratio: perfect. The secret to their burgers is the high quality meat. While Chef Brandon and his team utilize a traditional grille (vs a charbroiler), I found the patty flavorful but to my surprise, free of grease. The cheese, vegetables, bun, and regular French fries were all above average. If only it wasn't cold outside, we would have sat on the patio. I can't think of a nicer setting in Denver. The panoramic view of the skyline is truly memorable. This is a testimonial to specialization: they do one thing and do it right. I would just order the knockabout cheeseburger with American and regular fries. It was cooked to perfection. Short of me firing up my grill and concocting the Gordon Ramsay F-word cheeseburger, this is about as good as it gets at a trendy food setting. Pricing was about right as well.

Yelp
These burgers were amazing. They were very flavorful and the garlic Parmesan fries were out of this world. They also have a lot of wonderful vegetarian options.

D H.

Yelp
Just got cheeseburger to go. Maybe don't put tomatoes on it if your going to use the rotten ones. Not worth $18 bucks for fries and ok burger.

Megan F.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best burgers I've ever had. I got the goat cheese and caramelized onion veggie burger and garlic park fries. They have about 6 vegetarian options which is super impressive. Aside from the wonderful food you get to eat it on a rooftop that overlooks the city. Great ambience and food- would definitely recommend to a friend.

Andrew J.

Yelp
Ordered pickup. Burger and fries wasn't warm. Had to reheat my meal at home. Parking is really tough. Ordered the Knockabout Burger, ehhh 6/10

David S.

Yelp
Pretty good burgers. Creatively constructed. The curry sweet potato fries were quite good. My wife was pleased that there was a gluten free bun available and it turned out to be good. Ordering process is confusing at first. Once you get the hang of the on-screen ordering interface at the counter then it is fine. No one readily available to help so the cook had to come out behind the counter to give us some quick instruction. He did not seem pleased. Must be short staffed - like everyone else these days. Excellent service from the beverage lady. You bus your own table. You do have to pay attention to your cell phone because that's how you get notice that your food is ready and then you go retrieve it.

Casey R.

Yelp
Grabbed an order for pickup, as I'm constantly in search of a great burger, and I found it. Great beef, perfectly cooked, on a big, soft bun with the most unique and flavorful add-ons which make these burgers so tasty without being overwhelming. I also tried the Curry Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries, which were amazing and I couldn't stop eating them. This is the place for pure deliciousness on a not-so-average burger. Definitely check it out!

Maddie O.

Yelp
The burgers were great and the service was quick. My family and I all had different burgers and we all went home happy!

Brianna G.

Yelp
Ordered a burger at the Avanti location that was set to be ready in 15 mins. After 15 mins we went to the counter to get our burger and it was ice cold. We asked if we could get a warm burger and the woman on staff told us that it's wasn't their fault the burger was cold, and there was nothing she could do. Asked for a refund since we paid $15 for a cold burger and no fries and she told us no with a rude attitude and horrible customer service.

Brittney P.

Yelp
This place is simply amazing. The couple who run the business are both kind, and the food is incredible! You show up for the burgers, you fall in love with the fries and then you stay for the ice cream. I highly recommend giving this place a try!

Janie W.

Yelp
I went to Knock About Burgers to enjoy a juicy, yummy burger....I mean, that's what they are known for, right?! So I cozied up to the window and pondered the very inviting menu. But what caught my eye was the Kimchi Burger. I must say, I was a bit skeptical. Why put all that on a burger? Then, I decided to put on my big girl pants and take the plunge into a not so ordinary burger. Well, what to my surprise did I discover?? The Kimchi Burger, with a.....wait for it....a fried egg and that weird fermented cabbage stuff. YES, you read that right, and it was MARVELOUS!!!! Not just a burger, but a delicate combination of flavors that will explode in your mouth!! The kimchi was perfectly fermented, not too tangy, but just right! But why stop there, add hoisin ketchup and sriracha mayo with that fried egg, and really bring the flavors home!!! Never have I had a burger so unique and so tasty. But hold the sauce, it didn't just stop there, they then paired it with curry sweet potato fries!!! Those multitude of flavors may seem too much, but I am telling you, this burger and fries combo is worth the trip out of your house and down the street!!! This succulent combo will tantalize you at strange hours, because there is no way to recreate it, you just have to keep going back for more!!!!
