The Best New Restaurants In Austin: The Austin Hit List

"Meat nerds everywhere will feel their ears perk up after hearing the words “Olympia Provisions.” We mention those words because the Portland-based restaurant with a cultlike following supplies the mortadella, capicola, and salami for Knuckle Sandwich’s Italian sub. But it’s not just excellent meats that make this sandwich worth crossing town for. It’s light and crunchy bread topped with za’atar. It’s Mama Lil’s pickled peppers. It’s a long, thin sheet of crispy baked parmesan cheese. This is one of the best sandwiches you’ll find in the city, and you can get it from a small trailer outside of Ants Beer Cave in South Austin. Oh right, and there are other sandwiches there, too." - nicolai mccrary, matthew jacobs, matthew jacobs, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, nicolai mccrary, ni

The Best Restaurants in South Austin

"Knuckle Sandwich punches far above their weight. The tiny trailer outside of Ants Beer Cave on St. Elmo Road has only four sandwiches on the menu (plus a couple of sides), but that’s all they need. Each will inspire that eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head sigh not often associated with bread and the things that go inside it. In Knuckle’s namesake item—a spin on an Italian sub featuring mortadella, capicola, and salami supplied from Portland’s beloved Olympia Provisions—there's a sheet of crispy baked parmesan cheese that makes it pop. The turkey sandwich, meanwhile, has olive tapenade and red pepper aioli that Jersey Mike himself wouldn't be able to resist. " - matthew jacobs, nicolai mccrary

The sandwich menu is small but mighty at Knuckle - Review - Austin - The Infatuation

"Knuckle Sandwich punches far above their weight. The tiny trailer outside of Ants Beer Cave in South Austin has only four sandwiches on the menu (plus a couple of sides), but that’s all they need. Each will inspire that eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head sigh not often associated with bread and the things that go inside it. These aren’t typical sandwiches, you see. The bread is topped with za’atar, and the fillings are as clever as they are tasty. In Knuckle’s namesake item—a spin on an Italian sub featuring mortadella, capicola, and salami supplied from Portland’s beloved Olympia Provisions—there's a sheet of crispy baked parmesan cheese that makes it pop. Grab Knuckle to go or eat your sandwich at one of the picnic benches next to Ants’ pickleball courts. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Food Rundown photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL The Knuckle Sandwich If a restaurant is going to name a dish after itself, it better be good. Fortunately, this sub is better than good—it’s one of the best sandwiches in Austin. We’ve already told you what’s in it (except we didn’t mention Mama Lil’s pickled peppers—those are nice too). Now go get it. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL The Turkey Sammie It’s hard to screw up a turkey sandwich, but it’s even harder to make one stand out. Knuckle’s uses sprouts, feta, and two complementary spreads well worth the $17 price tag. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL The Mushroom Reuben Knuckle’s vegetarian option swaps corned beef for lion’s mane mushrooms, and it’s just as rich as its meatier counterpart. Even the staunchest carnivore you know will be satisfied with this saucy, peppery sandwich. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL The Lamb Sandwich A lamb sub with beets and horseradish? Bet you didn’t see that one coming. The tzatziki can be a little overpowering, but if that’s the biggest complaint we can muster, you know you’re still in good hands. photo credit: RICHARD CASTEEL Panisse These little chickpea blocks are salty and fluffy, and they come with schmaltz aioli as well as a toum so garlicky it’ll clear your nasal passages." - Matthew Jacobs

Google
I stopped at Knuckle Sandwich to pick up a couple of sammies for my friend and I. We decided to go with the OG Knuckle Sandwich and the Mushroom Reuben. I also got a side of the pickled beets. The beets had a great pickled flavor, but they were much more crunchy than I expected. I think my only recommendation for that would be to cook them a tad longer so they're a hair softer. But otherwise, I would order them again. The Mushroom Reuben was good. I think I prefer classic Reubens haha, but this is a great option for all you vegetarians out there. The Knuckle Sandwich is absolutely where it's at though. Think an Italian sandwich with a Middle Eastern spin. The za'atar vinaigrette added such an amazing flavor to a sandwich with fantastic bread, tasty meat, and a healthy amount of veggies. I look forward to trying their other sandwiches as well as eating another Knuckle Sandwich.

Google
I got the lamb sandwich and the chickpea tots. There was not much meat on the sandwich and the meat was a bit dry. But overall it was okay, it’s not something I would get again. The chickpea tots were pretty good, I would get it again. It did take a bit of time for the meal to come out but the atmosphere is active and you can watch people play pickleball while you wait.

Google
Ordered the Knuckle Sandwich, but would have liked for a smaller size to be offered because it was too large for me. The flavors were decent, but I didn't care too much for the sauce that came on the sandwich. For the price and size, I probably wouldn't go back, it's an okay sandwich place, but there are better options in Austin.

Google
Truly LOVE this place. The signature Knuckle sandwich is SOOOOO yummy and the Lamb Sammie is ELITE. It’s hard to choose. I crave this place almost weekly. Staff is great too!

Google
This place was super tasty!!! I would definitely go back. We got the cold cuts sandwhich, salad and the matzoh ball soup. The matzoh balls could have been a little fluffier but otherwise it was spot on. My one complaint is that everything was a little too salty for me. I definitely felt the need to drink a lot of water. I think that if the salt was reduced by like 15% this would all be perfect.

Google
Overall, delicious sandwich. I got the knuckle sandwich. You can tell how much care they put into every component. The spreads were so fresh, lettuce well dressed, bread was bangin’ with great spices. Only reason it’s a 4/5 for me is because the ratio of ingredients was the slightest bit off. When I got a bite with the mama lils and everything else, it was fantastic. But I got more less flavorful and dry bites than amazing bites. With that being said, I’d come back for another one!

Google
BY FAR the best sandwich shop of 2025! The Italian and the turkey both slap and we cannot wait to be back. This is not your ordinary sandwich shop and is truly one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Don’t walk, RUN to eat at Knuckle Sandwich!!!

Google
OG Knuckle Sandwich lives up to the hype! Loved the cheese crisp for the crunch. Cool vibe sandwich bar— highly recommend.

Yelp
It was a solid sandwich, however for 17 dollars it was underwhelming for sure. The pictures they have posted online are not what the sandwich actually looks like. They put only two thin slices of meat on my sandwich, if I'm paying 17 dollars for a sandwich they should put a fair amount of meat on it.

Yelp
I was excited to try Knuckle Sandwich after a ton of positive ink on social media & Austin food sites and such. So, I was prepared to be underwhelmed as it was hyped up. I thought it was really cool how they list where they source their food from, and 1/2 of the bread comes from Abby Jane (and they use the adjacent Barton Springs Mill for grain), so that pumped me up as Drip is my jam! Anyway, I took one look at my sandwich and I just kinda said, this looks impressive. And it only took one bite, and I was absolutely shocked. The sandwich was just incredible. I had the turkey one (and will be back for the others). I can't even tell you the last time I had bread like the bread they use. Fresh/crispy. It's hard to explain how good this sandwich is, and well worth the premium price you pay. I also had the Matzah Ball soup and it had this freshness to it and a great matzah ball that kinda took me back to my grandmas on Staten Island. However, it was a bit on the salty side for my taste. In contrast, I wish my Grandma would have used *any* salt in hers, but that's a story for another time. Lastly, I have to say the whole area, the brewery that Knuckle Sandwich is associated with is amazing. Benches to sit in (with heaters), indoor/outdoor pickleball courts, a pizza truck right next to it...and more broadly speaking the whole Yard is filled with food trucks, breweries, distilleries - just awesome. I will be back and this is one of the places i will bring friends/family visiting to show them how cool Austin is!

Yelp
heard a lot of great things about knuckle sandwich, and was actually pretty disappointed. The sandwich + chickpea bites were $26 total. I find the pricing absurd. However, the quality of the sandwich was also kind of a miss. The bread was great, and the actual meat was good -- but the sandwich is 70% lettuce and 30% meat. I think for a $19 sandwich (tax included) it should be filling and good. The service was great, the chickpea bites were fire and the place is super cool. Just think they either need to lower prices or up the food quality (quantity?).

Yelp
Wow! Just wow! Try the chickpea tots. If you do nothing else you have to try these. They are great by themselves or with the sauces they come with. I had the lamb sandwich. It was rich and delicious. Not for the faint of heart. An explosion of flavors with every bite. I hear from coworkers the Italian sandwich is even better (not sure it's possible. Guess I'll have to go back. On top of this the staff is very friendly and helpful with questions.

Yelp
We shared a sandwich (the Italian) while hanging at Ant's Beer Cave and it was pretty good. The chickpea tots were to die for. I will def come back for those!

Yelp
Have been before and enjoyed the knuckle sandwich. This time tried the lamb sammie and matzo ball soup. Surprisingly, the soup came loaded with cilantro. Never seen cilantro used in mb soup and for those of us with the genetic cilantro tastes like soap gene we look hard on menus to avoid it. At this place they don't mention cilantro in the soup but they do mention celery which seems wrong. Same with the sandwich. Says "herbs" but not cilantro while they do disclose cilantro elsewhere on the menu. Why hide it in some items but disclose on others? The chef is apparently sephardic but the matzo ball was not even tender or fluffy. Do sephardim prefer hard matzo balls with cilantro? The lamb in the Sammie was also dry. Prices are set for perfection$9 for cup of soup and $17 for sandwich.

Yelp
I just finished the Knuckle sandwich, and it was better than my 2nd wife !! I'm going back tomorrow to try something different. Nick was great too !

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Austin by far. Super sophisticated flavor pairings! Using only the best meat from Olympia Provisions.

Yelp
Went yesterday and had the Knuckle Sandwich. Easily up there with Home Slice for the best Italian sammy in town. They told me it would be a 20 minute wait and it was closer to 40 but was still worth it.
