Koh Lanta Is One of Thailand's Best Hidden Gems

"A relatively undiscovered southern Thai island that reads like a hidden gem: low on Western chains, nightlife spectacle and overdevelopment for now, with long stretches of unbuilt beachfront and healthy reefs that make it excellent for snorkeling. Travel plans—including a proposed bridge to the mainland that would cut the trip to Krabi airport to about 45 minutes—threaten to change its quiet character, but currently it remains especially popular with Scandinavian winter visitors while remaining off the radar of most Americans. Best visiting months are roughly November through March; the island’s culture reflects its southern location (a high percentage of Muslim inhabitants and nearby Moken sea-nomad communities), and the east coast offers a very different, more traditional vibe than the resort-lined west." - Eric Goodman

Here for 3 months during rainy season. Absolutely fantastic. Minimal tourists and I enjoyed the weather each day. Empty beaches. A perfect stay

Beautiful beach with white sand! If you come to Thailand, be sure to stay on a remote island! You will definitely have a great time with a great view! There are restaurants lined up for kilometers along the beach, so it was comfortable! It's a shame that there are only a few types of island hopping that you can participate in from Koh Lanta.

I visited the island during the low season and enjoyed a few days here. The snorkelling was spectacular — I did two boat trips, one by slow boat and another by speedboat, both offering stunning underwater views. However, I’m giving a low rating because, as a European tourist, I felt taken advantage of, especially at the local markets where no prices are displayed. I was quoted up to three times the local rate for basic items like vegetables and fruit. It left me feeling unwelcome. If you do not ride a motorbike you will also get ripped off by taxis because there is no GRAB here. That said, the island itself is very laid-back, and I had a lovely time dining at a great French restaurant.

We stayed in Koh Lanta for five nights in February 2025, our fourth visit to Thailand. The island's tourism feels chaotic at the moment. Compared to other areas of Thailand we've traveled to, we felt cheated at every turn. We made a very poor choice in selecting the Kantiang Bay area, where everything is extremely expensive, and the conditions are of very low quality. The hotel, listed as four stars, cost over $180 per night, but the conditions were at most three stars. Since we don't drive scooters, the taxis effectively overcharged us. For a 15 km ride in an open taxi (tuk-tuk), we paid between $20 and $40. There are a few somewhat decent areas, but the overall experience was clearly negative. We tried to visit the waterfall and famous cave in the south of the island, but at the entrance, we were verbally assaulted by a member of the family who lives close to that the place. In addition, marijuana is smoked everywhere, without limit or control. Many drivers are under the influence of cannabis, and the risk of road accidents is extremely high. Avoid the island for now; choose another location in central or northeastern Thailand, where our experience was the complete opposite. The island is not worth your time or money.

Beautiful island 🏝️ Deadly snakes 🐍 - Exploring The island Koh Lanta is quite big and you’ll need a scooter for exploring. You can easily rent a scooter without questions asked for around 200 Baht per day - Island Vibe It’s a tourist island and can get busy in high season. If you come in May it’ll be less touristy. It’s quite relaxed but roads do get busy and there are speeding pickups and locals - Police There is a police station, tourist police boxes and emergency facilities. It is still an island and you’ll most likely not run into a police checkpoint - Wildlife The island is full of life even tho it is quite touristy. You’ll see deadly snakes 🐍 monkeys, lizards, crabs … - Beaches There are beautiful beaches and you’ll definitely find one you’ll like - National Park and Cave These two were my highlights and I definitely recommend checking them out - Food and drinks You’ll have 7-elevens, grocery stores, local markets, restaurants and bars! Enjoy

A must place to visit. A bit quieter than other places with not so many tourists and beautiful beaches

Great place to go for vacation. Mountains + Nice roads + Sea beach ⛱️. Many Restaurants available. Street foods are also delicious. Really would love to go there again.

Can’t see the appeal and I feel there are much nicer areas in Krabi and around Thailand. I guess if you’re in the area and desperate to spend some time on an island by the beach then this might be okay. There is very little to see or do on the island except swim in the sea. There’s nothing else really worth seeing.
