Where to Find the Best Kolaches in Houston | Eater Houston

"At this versatile Cypress pastry shop, kolaches are filled with fruity flavors like peach, raspberry, blackberry, and apple pie, but they also venture into a Houston-centric savory territory. Homemade dough is stuffed with Texas barbecue brisket, boudin, jalapeño poppers, crawfish étouffée, halal gyro, and more, while its assortment of cinnamon rolls, some of which come dressed with maple bacon, Nutella, and Fruity Pebbles, offer a decadent dessert. Those who can’t make it to the shop before its closing at noon Friday through Sunday can visit its Cypress vending oven, where kolaches are delivered any time of day through an ATM-like machine." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
Koala Kolache is a unique donut/kolache shop owned by a super friendly & cute couple. Yes it is true the she is the "crazy donut lady" in a sense that she is funny not cray cray. I didn't get a chance to taste the boudin kolache because they we sold out when we got there at 11am. But we a had a wide selection of pulled pork, smoked sausage, Jimmy Dean sausage, ham & cheese & mac & cheese kolaches. My son had the 2 step donut filled with cookie dough & cookies & cream with m&ms. Everything was delicious! We will be back for more!

Google
So far one of our favorite place for a kolache. The brisket was good, the boudin was great. Kids loved the donut. The special ice cream filled was very fun and tasty. They had loads of cereal toppings and about 6 flavors of ice cream. Employees where very nice. They seem to sell out of favorites by end of lunch.

Google
Koala is one of those places that you can taste the love and passion the owners have for their craft. When entering the shop you are always greeted with welcoming faces and the hardest of decisions! Every flavor I have tried (and there has been a lot) has been exquisite but a few that really stand out are the barbacoa, sausage & gravy, and the cinnamon rolls! If you're a kolache lover such as myself, this little gem is a must. I can't wait to stop back in and try the next amazing flavor creation.

Google
I searched jalapenos kolaches and found these guys. Let’s just say you can’t go wrong if you’re in Cypress and you want a good bakery for breakfast kolaches!

Google
The team at Koala Kolache never fail to impress. All food tells a story and the treats here tell it well. The love and passion along with the fearless creativity is presented behind a glass wall that thankfully is there to prevent me from eating everything! The cinnamon rolls are to die for and I was lucky to try a barbacoa Kolache, flavor explosion and a nice slice of jalapeno makes an amazing combo of heat and flavor. My favorite is the sausage and gravy. This has been attempted by many but here the gravy consistency is what you'd imagine along with the robust flavor of sausage. Unbutton a button when you sit and eat, bet you can't have just one. Thank you Koala Kolache!

Google
So sad to hear this place will be closing in July. Amazing food, never had anything bad here. Amazing staff. Will miss it!

Google
First of all, super friendly people! This is a great place for your breakfast favorites AND dessert! They not only serve ice cream but will also add it into a donut and mix in the toppings of your choice. The Philly cheesesteak kolache is a favorite of mine and you have to try their "doscuits" (donut + biscuit sandwich). My 5 year old is now a huge fan of their sausage, egg and cheese doscuit.

Google
Cinnamon rolls were on point and the icing was light and delicious. All homemade in house daily. I also had the Boudain and Jimmy Dean kolaches and the were fantastic. Her dough is light and flavorful, can't beat fresh baked homemade dough. This will be a definite stop when I am in the area

Yelp
Let me start this off by saying that I am not a big fan of kolaches. I am more of a pastries kid. That being said - this cinnamon roll is everything dreams are made of. Microwave it for 30 seconds and get ready to change your life. We just moved to the area and have been twice in a week. The owner also gave our kid a Christmas gift- bonus points for being nice to kids and thoughtful. You NEED the cinnamon roll. I don't know how else to stress this to you. You MUST have it.
google avatar

Yelp
V is the best. Her products are fresh, unique, delicious, and always the highest of quality. My mom, who prides herself on her homemade cinnamon rolls, relinquishes her title of best to V. It's a blessing and a curse that Koala is right around the corner from our house...it's equal parts convenient and tempting! Whenever our sons come to town to visit, they know there will be a Koala breakfast board awaiting them in our kitchen!

Yelp
Used to love going here but now with their limited hours make it difficult to. I thought I use to come on Thursday's but it seems like they are closed on Thursday now also. Good kolaches but they have definitely took a step down over the last few months. Kolaches and Cinnabons are usually sold out early so wish they would keep them stocked. Really nice owner just wish the product was more available to us.

Yelp
The food, the staff the superb energy when you walk in that door is what keeps me coming back. You cannot find a better cinnamon roll in all of Houston. The owners cheerful attitude is 90% white people go there. Much respect to a great

Yelp
The owner is incredibly friendly and kind. She was very welcoming to my wife, myself, and 17 month old as it was our first time here, we were visiting from out of state. We told her that we wanted a cinnamon roll and wow were they amazing! Anyone going here MUST try the cookie butter cinnamon roll, can't say enough about this! We also tried the pecan cinnamon roll which was delicious. Support this business!

Yelp
Omg!!! Everything I've tried has gotten better, if that's even possible? And I'm picky!!! The kolaches are somehow magically more flaky and soft, and filled with lots of good stuff!! Brisket, spicy brisket, and gyro were the ones I tried today. All of them were fresh and flavorful, and packed to the brim! I loved how the owner labeled which ones were which to help me out. Cinnamon rolls are still amazing and the size of my giant head and so so worth it. I was even given extra frosting on the side! Truly, honestly, my favorite kolache/cinnamon roll shop. And the owner is and forever will be a total sweetheart.
google avatar

Yelp
The owners and staff are incredibly nice. Expect a briskly moving a line on weekend mornings. If you go late in the morning, beware that you may find your favorite selling out. It sure can be nerve wracking to watch the tray containing the last 6 sausage and gravy kolaches while you you watch 9, then 8, then 6, phew finally, the last 2 people ahead of you make their selections. You may even audibly groan, when the single man starts out his order by pulling out a list for his family of 10. Ah, it's not really a problem because it's just becomes an excuse to try something new. But there is some tension as you silently will those folks to move beyond the chicken pot pie or brisket (my kid's favorites) & hope they opt for the more traditional ham and cheese alternatives. Like I said, it's all good - but get there early to be sure to grab your favorite or do as I do, arrive late and gamble with the gods.

Yelp
Please NOTE: This review is only of the one kolache that I had at the Woofest at the UH campus last month. I have never actually been to this store and they have limited food at this event. IT WAS DELICIOUS. I had a brisket/jalapeno kolache. Oh wow! I am not a fan of a certain FAMOUS kolache group around HTX because they always seem to have their bread/meat ratio very backward. Koala Kolache doesn't have that problem. My food was warmed up AFTER I ordered it. The meat was so delicious and there were many jalapenos inside so it was nice and spicy just the way I like it. The size was perfect and easy to eat while walking around. If their location wasn't so far away from me, I would go at least once a week.

Dewayne A.

Yelp
It's been almost a year since my last visit and review and sadly I was even more disappointed this time. Variety of selections has been reduced and portion sizes are smaller. I think they have opened another location and wonder if this location (Spring Cypress & Louetta) is being phased out?
google avatar

Yelp
To summarize my experience here, the food and staff are FANTASTIC! My husband and I tried this location for the first time this week for his birthday breakfast, and we tried multiple items including the kolache (i.e., Bean Enchilada, Brisket, Pizza, Jalapeño Popper, and Sausage and Gravy) and cookie butter cinnamon roll. The location was unassuming, but we were so happy with our decision to try them. All of the menu items are made from scratch and are so fresh and flavorful! They warmed the items for us, and they were the perfect temperature - they even stayed warm until we ate some at home! Our personal favorites were the Bean Enchilada and Brisket kolache. Also, the service was fantastic! We met V and Wendy, and they were gracious and fun to talk to. V provided excellent recommendations that ended up being our favorites. If you are thinking about giving Koala Kolache a try, do it! You will not regret it.

Yelp
So bad soggy plastic bags wondering how much in advance these are made or if they now sell out to someone else baking them
google avatar

lori s.

Yelp
You just have to eat the cronuts!! Croissant meets glazed donut! They're sinful. But their glazed donuts are good too. So far we haven't had anything we don't like. Good kolaches too!
google avatar

Jill P.

Yelp
Cannot say enough good things about their cinnamon rolls. The best I've ever had! Owner and staff is so welcoming and genuine. Pay attention to the hours as they're not open every day but worth the wait.

Norman B.

Yelp
They are never open. I used to enjoy their clutches but everytime I stop they are closed.

Yelp
Best Kolaches I have ever had, and I am always looking for new places to try! 10/10. The owner is from California, like us, and brings such a welcoming vibe to the place. I rarely get a fruit kolache, because often the consistency of the fruit is either too thick or the taste overpowers the dough, but I got a cherry one to try and hands down, completely changed my perspective on fruit kolaches as i would DEFINITELY get this one again! I'm also not a big fan of boudin, but this cajun kolache ended up being one of my favorites in the mix of all we got! The kolaches melt in your mouth and their specials are so interesting! I can't WAIT to try their lamb one!! Beautiful people and beautiful little place. Now listed as one of my favorite breakfast spots in Houston/Cypress area! Thank you!

Yelp
This shop has it all, creativity, familiarity and top quality food! They take all our fav foods and tuck them neatly into old style elementary school type dough rolls. When I say they're phenomenal, I mean theyre like nothing I've had before. Good job Koala, you're on to something. Keep your food quality standards high and you'll remain in a class all your own! My favs..... Turkey & Dressing, Boudin, Chicken Pot Pie, Sausage & Gravy to name a few. They're not cheap but so very worth it. Just wow!

Yelp
We had to drive about half an hour to try this place, and it was worth it. It's a cute little space, you can't eat inside. The staff is awesome! They take their time with each customer. Upon learning it was our first time they were very friendly answering questions and being helpful. The people behind us were regulars that were actually returning a serving plate that they had borrowed. Obviously, this business is well known in the community. The kolaches were good, and I loved the variety. I don't eat meat, and they had plenty of choices for me, which I loved I got the egg whites and leek and the everything bagel. The everything bagel kolache I will definitely get everytime. They had other vegetarian options and a crawfish kolache listed on the website that I will definitely be trying if they are available on my next visit. Now, onto the cinnamon rolls. I don't even know what to say. We got the rasberry and nutella kolaches. I avoided some of the other ones because they didn't look like they had as much frosting, not knowing that after they pulled the cinnamon rolls they offer to add EXTRA frosting to them, which of course I said yes to. After my husband and I finished the two cinnamon rolls, we wished we had ordered one of every flavor. I want to pick a day to not act like an adult, and I plan on coming here and ordering as many cinnamon rolls as childhood me would have, eating them, not feeling well because of my decision, and looking back on it and not regretting it. If you live nearby go! If you live farther away, start planning a trip, it's worth it!

Yelp
OH MAH GOD. It was a dream to order anything here at Koala Kolache. 10/10 for customer service from the owner, she was incredible and recommended everything from their top sellers to the time it takes to heat up a Kolache to the perfect temperature (25 seconds if you ask)! I placed my order on a Saturday for Sunday because I didn't want to miss out on any of the flavors. She said her most popular kolaches are the Pizza and the Black Bean Enchilada kolache! Her most popular cinnamon roll is the strawberry shortcake. They also sell a bunch of gluten free kolaches as well as gluten free cinnamon rolls. What I can speak to is the boudain/ sausage and cheese gluten free kolaches and the gluten free cinnamon roll. OH MY WORD. The Cinnamon roll had the best frosting I've ever eaten in my life. If you heat it up for 25 seconds in the microwave it is absolutely melt in your mouth good. Cinnamon roll connoisseur tip (these are pretty large, you probably only want 1-2). Never in my life have I found a gluten free kolache. This kind had a wonderful springy texture with a buttery consistency like it's gluten brother! Gosh I've been dreaming about these kolaches all week.... can't wait to get more.

Yelp
How can a place so charming be so evil? As soon as you walk in, you see this cute southern decor and are welcomed by a cashier, server, and the owner who all say hello and ask how you found out about the place. I'd seen Koala on a KPRC morning show and the creative varieties of kolache seemed so interesting I thought I'd give it a try. I got there around 8:30am and there was a small line. Some of the previous reviews commented that the lines could be long and that they would run out of kolaches. Since that time Koala must have improved their inventory control as there was nothing sold out when I visited. The line moved quickly. The server cheerfully noted the brisket kolache is the best seller. I got the spicy version that comes with jalepeno. Then the sausage, egg, and cheese kolache, the black bean enchilada kolache, and the chicken chimi kolache. I thought I was done but as I got closer to the register I saw big cinnamon rolls. The cashier and server teamed up and brought their big smiles and said the matcha and coconut roll was awesome. It was like being attacked by happy anime characters, I couldn't resist and I got the matcha roll even though the standard cinnamon roll and the strawberry shortcake roll looked great too. There were also fruit kolaches and a fruity pebbles roll...the sweet side of the counter display is just evil! My crew liked the spicy brisket kolaches. I thought the chicken chimi was really tasty too, if a bit salty. The sausage, egg, and cheese kolache was good...more standard flavor-wise to the competition, but I did like that the sausage was cut up into nice chunks. The black bean enchilada kolache is filled with seasoned beans and cheese and is tasty but not my favorite. The matcha and coconut roll was really nice and a good complement to my coffee. There were several flavors I didn't get to try, so I will probably head back soon. It's a little pricey and I understand they're open only half the week, but if you want some creativity in your options this is a good change of pace from your standard kolache store.

Yelp
Can we just go ahead and dig right in? My fave from Koala Kolache is the apple cinnamon roll. It was nostalgia for me because it was like a mini Mardi Gras king cake. Moist, tender apples rolled inside this gooey cinnamon roll and iced with cream cheese (omit cream cheese icing for me) was EVERYTHING. There were variety of flavors including red velvet and Nutella. The savory kolache names speak for itself as well. Boudin stuffing was hitting home for me, as it was spicy and seasoned like most Cajun food from Louisiana. Chicken and white cheese was another flavorful, string pulling cheesy kolache. But don't take my word for it! Stop in yourself to pick out a sweet or savory morning treat. I had the pleasure of chatting with Koala Kolache's business owner. Her regular customers were there to advocate the delicious creations Koala Kolache serves.
google avatar

Taylor B.

Yelp
Excellent food with even more excellent owner. Our favorites are the sausage & cheese kolache, the egg & breakfast sausage kolache, and the sausage & gravy kolache. The bread is perfect. Get there early, because they sell our fast! We also like the fruit kolaches. If you like sweet instead of savory, can't go wrong with the giant cinnamon rolls.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
This place is utterly amazing. Food... awesome. So many options. All of which are great. I know. I tried them ALL!! Service is fantastic. The owners take great pride in what they make and what they hand out. The desserts are fantastic. The menu changes throughout the year so if you really like something get it while you can. Only downfall is limited area to enjoy the food options in house. Other than that wonde
google avatar

Yelp
Was in town visiting my daughter and we stopped off here to pick up some cinnamon rolls to take to a friend's house who was hosting a brunch. We walked in and they were super friendly. We got two original rolls, a bourbon pecan and a birthday cake. Were were tempted to get several of the Kolache but decided to come back in the morning. The rolls were absolutely AMAZING!!! Loved the balance of flavors and the fact that it wasn't overly sweet and the dough was pillow like...not dense. May have to pick up some to take to Miami!

Yelp
I am SO HAPPY that Koala Kolache moved so much closer to my side of town. My husband and I used to travel to the old location where we thought was so worth the drive for their delicious donut ice cream sandwich! Now, we are even happier because new items constantly emerges and we can't help but to indulge in almost everything!!! Kolache is what they seem to mainly focus on (hence the name, hellooo...), but they do also offer other items such as their mochi donut, a variety of danishes, and can't forget their AWESOME CINNAMON ROLLS! Ugh... drool! I love both the original and the raspberry. Now that fall season is rolling in, better believe they now have pumpkin in the mix! You can even request for extra frosting, and the owner is happy to slather more on your guilty pleasure! Some of the recent Kolaches I have tried and currently am obsessed with are the Thai Basil and chicken masala. I seriously hope this becomes a permanent item on their shelf! It's super flavorful and my husband really loves chicken masala/ butter chicken. Last but not least, I really look forward to coming here every single time! The owner ALWAYS greets everyone with the biggest smile and she is super friendly. It's like coming to see your long time friend every single time we go visit this shop! Definitely have and will continue to recommend this place to all friends and family! Nothing beats great hospitality with delicious and unique kolaches!

Kathleen C.

Yelp
Very good traditional Czech kolaches as well as new and different flavors. Cinnamon rolls are delicious too.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
If you're going to be closed for an entire month, maybe update your website, your google or Apple Maps, or social media. All of them said nothing about the closure. We tried calling before coming but the mail box is full, and there's no info about the closure on the answering machine. We just drove 30 mins to come get kolaches and arrived to a sign saying it's closed until Feb 3rd for renovations. I'm sure the kolaches are amazing, which is why we made the drive and wanted to try them.. but very disappointed in the lack of "business management" and keeping customers updated.
google avatar

Charlene H.

Yelp
Consistently delicious food and friendly, welcoming service. This is a great weekend pickup option for breakfast for the family. It gets very busy, but the line moves quickly.
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
Happy One Year to Koala Kolache! Stumbled by this place one day when picking up a cake for my daughter. My sister and I thought the name sounds familiar. One day after mass we decided to grab some Kolache from Koala. We walked in and saw Vanny! We couldn't believe she moved closer to us! We love all her Kolaches. Some of my favorites are Thai Basil, traditional meatloaf, spicy boudin and street corn. Her cinnamon rolls are BOMB! We can't wait to come back and try more!! We love you Vanny!
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Friendly service, amazing Kolaches (sweet and savory)! The creativity of the owner in devising new delicious flavors is my favorite part. She also makes AMAZING cinnamon rolls. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Excellent food and quick service! Their frosting is fresh made and so delicious! Not to sweet and not a paste like any other place you for cinnamon rolls.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Amazing gluten free options, cooked in a separate oven too for celiac safe guarantee. Owner was so sweet even under all the pressure of being the only one there working during the breakfast rush. 10/10 will come back when I visit Houston! Worth the drive

Scott L.

Yelp
Best kolaches I've had so far. Went on a Saturday around 10am and it was pretty busy. Got a boudin and sausage/cheese. Both were truly beautiful. The bread was nice and soft and tasty. The boudin was so delicious. Boudin was moist, didn't fall apart into tons of small pieces like some places I've tried. The boudin was nice and spicy, could be too spicy for some but I loved it. The owner was super nice and greeted everyone who walked in even though she was busy af and she was very talkative and apologized for the wait and how warm it was inside there. She gets an A++++ for standing front line and not cowering in hiding like most owners do. Will definitely go back.
google avatar

Deronica H.

Yelp
Amazing service quality of food fast service fresh daily with great customer service!

Drea C.

Yelp
Huge waist of money the gluten free items made me Sick and the ingredients are very poor quality not to mention it is soooooo expensive I'm talken 30 plus dollars for 4 things I will never go back there again
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Best of the best right here. We lived in Houston for 4 years and would spend $150-$200 about ever 2-3 months. The kolache are amazing but the baked treats are even better!! Cinnamon rolls, love this gal and her team. We have since moved back to AZ and came for a weekend and to stop in, still A freaking mazing.
google avatar

Donna T.

Yelp
I'm so excited that the are open again. The donuts are always fresh and yummy. The owner is super friendly. Can't wait until they are making kolaches. Oh and the new location is so cute. Love the decor. Donuts =5+ Service=5+ Return=5+
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
YUM A MILLION TIMES! If you haven't tried this place, what are you waiting for?! Their Cinnamon Rolls are to die for, as well as their brisket Kolaches, cream puffs... well and everything really The owner also has great customer service, and is very welcoming. What a great place!
google avatar

Holly N.

Yelp
I stopped by in the afternoon on the Friday of their grand opening and they were out of kolaches. I'm not mad at them but I was mad at myself for not getting there earlier! Donuts holes - they were amazing! A lot of places don't get their donut holes right because it's either too sweet or they taste too fried. Their donut holes were the perfect amount of sweet and fried. They. We're fluffy and oh so yummy. Blueberry donut - HOLY COW. I've never had a blueberry donuts before and I'm so glad I popped my cherry with theirs. It wasn't overly glazed with sweetness. The flavor was just super yum. Blueberry cake donut - my sister ate this one and she loved it. She usually buys the cake donuts from Kroger but not anymore! Glazed blueberry cake donut - Again, not overly sweet and glazed. Perfect amount of glaze and perfect amount of cake. Can wait to go back and try their kolaches. I will definitely get there early this time.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
This was an epic find! We came in around 10:30am on a Sunday and a lot of the selection was picked over, but they still had plenty to offer. I got a cinnamon roll and classic Lil Smokie kolache, although I was tempted to get one of everything! The dough is fantastic, maybe some of the best I have had on a kolache. It is obvious that everything is homemade fresh with love and care. Not to mention the best shop owner ever that makes you immediately feel like an old friend when you come inside. Support this local gem!
google avatar

Layton P.

Yelp
I brought a raspberry cinnamon roll back to my office to share with my co-workers. After the first bite, a co-worker exclaimed, "Oh,my god!" Others immediately heard him, then they came a-runnin'. Gone in 15 secs. Otherworldly mouthgasm.

Shahana W.

Yelp
This place used to be great! I hadn't been there in a long time but decided to treat myself this morning. I was disappointed because the cases were gone as was the variety. Everything is in plastic bags and it doesn't taste as good. The ambience is gone as well as the quality. I don't think I'll be back.
google avatar

S.Taylor O.

Yelp
Wait time depends on when you arrive and we waited in a line that was to the door. I'd give 4 if there were more registers for quicker service. Since there were not, I took a away. BONUS: The turkey and cheese (yellow) and or turkey and Swiss cheese proved to be my favorite kolaches. Also, the bread is moist and has that home-cooked taste and feel. I also ordered a cinnamon roll which overall was good but I just wish they'd have given me the option of not getting so much of the white icing on it and or putting it on the side since it is very rich and heavy. Let then know if you don't like a lot of icing, otherwise it'll be gobs of it. I took away another because both times I visited, there was no pork belly kolache for whatever their reasoning for not having them that day. If ever I'm in the area, I'd definitely get another turkey and cheese and or to try the ham and cheese kolache. The price point Id say is a lot higher than your "corner kolache store" but you'll be getting much better dough.

Al C.

Yelp
Picked up cinnamon rolls this am and it was utter disappointment. They shrunk and not giant anymore. Frosting was just a blob in the center. Once upon a time, they were giant and frosting spread over the roll...I guess those days are over.
google avatar

Lindsey N.

Yelp
The very best. Only complaint is I wish they were open more days a week. You won't be disappointed by anything here. I love the fruity pebbles cinnamon rolls and cream puffs. The everything bagel kolaches is on point!
google avatar

Edward P.

Yelp
Today was my first visit to Koala Kolache and it will definitely not be the last. They had the best customer service with a large variety of kolaches and cinnamon rolls. We tried multiple kolaches and decided on just attempting the original cinnamon roll. Everything was great.

Joe W.

Yelp
I have been coming here for Kolaches for over five years. The Kolaches are always fresh and sometimes still warm from the oven. Latest visit was different. Kolaches were wrapped in plastic and were cold. Noticed they installed an expensive toaster oven for reheating. Appears they are making Kolaches ahead and refrigerating them for reheat later. The Kolache dough was soggy and was not flaky. Even the fruit Kolaches were cold from the refrigerator. Please go back to the way you have always made them.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Not only are the kolaches delicious and creative, the owner is such a beautiful person. She greets her customers with so much happiness and enthusiasm. This is my weekly treat and it's so hard to just leave with one!!! My favorite is the gyro - yummmm!! And their cinnamon rolls are HUGE and oozing of frosting. I buy those and save for my night time dessert.
google avatar

Jeanette B.

Yelp
I love this place, love their kolaches and they have the best cinnamon rolls. I always feel so welcomed when I walk in. So I ordered the thanksgiving rolls and was supposed to pick them up by a certain time...life happened and i ended up locked out of my house with no car keys. When I called to let them know (they were about to close) the owner was so sweet and said not worry she could deliver them for me and gave me an extra surprise with the delivery. Not only do they have delicious pastries but they also have amazing customer service.
google avatar

David Q.

Yelp
The kolaches are amazing... the pecan cinnamon roll is awesome... but what really sets this place apart is the warm welcome and great customer service.
