I saw this new Korean spot in an Instagram reel, so I had to go check it out! Kochu is located on Burnet, a little South of the Domain. There is plenty of parking around the restaurant. As soon as we entered, we were greeted enthusiastically by the person working the register and several others. They offered us samples of their drinks and explained a bit about the menu. This is a counter service spot, with self-seating after you order.
They offer a lot of the standard Korean dishes, including Korean fried chicken, jajangmyeon, buldak ramen, and bibimbap. We ordered:
- Bibimbap with bulgogi: Pretty solid bibimbap, the egg was cooked to a perfect jammy texture and the bulgogi was lightly sweet.
- Buldak ramen: This was pretty spicy (as expected for buldak) but not unbearable. The cheese definitely helped a bit! There is actually spicy chicken under all those noodles too, so not a bad value.
- Spicy jeyuk plate: They offer plates and bowls for each protein, and the plates come with slaw and japchae. They also gave us a ginger sauce for the rice, which was refreshing after all the spice. The pork was a thicker cut than I'm used to seeing in this dish, but it was still tender and I enjoyed it. My one complaint is that the japchae had a strong taste of black pepper.
Overall, this seems to be a pretty solid Korean spot and a nice addition to the neighborhood! The spicy jeyuk plate took a long time to come out, but someone who seemed to be the owner came over and apologized and checked on us which was nice. All of the staff were very friendly and seemed enthusiastic about the food, which was the best part. I wish they offered banchan with every order and not as a separate side order, but it's understandable considering they aren't a true sit-down restaurant. I would give this place 4.5 stars but I'm rounding up since they're new!
