Austin’s New Restaurant & Bar Openings

"Kochu is a casual spot serving a mix of classic Korean dishes and fusion plates. You’ll find things like Korean fried chicken sandwiches as well as bowls of birria Shin ramen. It’s located in a strip mall at 183 and Burnet Road. " - nicolai mccrary

Came to this place while we were craving for sushi in Ottawa and we wanted a restaurant that had Aburi sushi and after looking at their menu, they had “Torched salmon sushi” and great reviews. The sushi was disappointing for its price. The salmon didn’t taste fresh and there was way too much cream cheese. The asparagus in the middle did not blend in well with the flavours. The unagi was good! But yeah I feel like it’s better to go there for their korean dishes (they have so many options) and not for the sushi. They also only had a few seats. The space was small. It was definitely a mistake on my end that I didn’t review the restaurant properly first and only looked at one thing on the menu and immediately went. But I’m rating this place for what we ordered and also the atmosphere.

I ordered a vegetarian ramen, it turns out to be good! 👍 The server and chef is very nice. They would ask you how you feel about the food. My only suggestion is to have more vegetarian food ( no onion & garlic) . Thank you 🙏

Google
Ordered sushi for pickup, it was near their closing hours so I was hoping it wouldn’t be too late. They were quick to make my order, extremely welcoming and kind when I arrived, and the food was amazing as always.

Google
Well-balanced meal with fresh vegetables and meat, crispy rice made it much more flavourful and great texture!!!!!!! And staffs are super nice. I will definitely visit there again if I move to Ottawa in June :)

Google
Everything is so FRESH and delicious, the staff are super kind, and their price is very reasonable. My favorite place to get sushi in Ottawa.

Google
A hidden gem if you like Korean or Japanese did. Great tasting food. It's a small place with limited seating, but worth it.

Yelp
Came here with my partner because we were craving Korean food, but it's more like Korean-Japanese fusion. Unfortunately, the food didn't taste that great, and it was too expensive for the small portions I received, leaving me hungry and disappointed. Also, it was a cold winter day, and the restaurant didn't salt their steps outside, which was dangerous and could have caused someone to slip and get hurt.

Yelp
What a great find...bright flavours, delicious, and good price! Our family of 4 (2A2C) were looking for something else to eat rather than the norm. We were so lucky to have stumbled upon this place! It was an afternoon on our anniversary and we like to explore foods and new eats and Kochu was a brilliant find. This meld of Korean and Japanese is not so much fusion as it is 2 different eats in one place. There is a few dishes that are fusion but that's not the star. Simple rail/countertop seating with QR code for ordering should you choose or the traditional tell them at the cash. The place smelled awesome walking in the door, was clean especially the bathrooms which as we all know is a good indicator of the kitchen's cleanliness. Speaking of the kitchen it's open so you can see exactly what's going on. The staff is super friendly, willing to explain things and really seemed to love the work as that passion showed in the taste and presentation of the food. We ate about 8 or 9 different dishes from gyoza/dumplings to maki rolls to octopus balls and tempura squid but the gochujang chicken was out of this world! Let's something clear right off the top...the food was FRESH!!! I'm talking REALLY FRESH! Seafood does not age well, seaweed salad does not age well, vegetables and raw fish needs to be fresh to be the best and the food here was all that and more. The tempura was light and crispy, the sauces deep and flavourful, the veg was crisp and delicious, and the seafood tasted super! The gochujang chicken was on another level with its blend of flavours, heat, veg, and plentiful succulent chicken. Best of all it was not drowning in the delicious sauce so each of the ingredients could really shine. I'm actually drooling right now thinking about that dish! A sparse beverage line up was sufficient as it was complimented with a self serve barley tea. We will be back and with our appetites ready as we will work our way through other yet-unexplored menu delights! Try this place...you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
We often order in from Kochu. We love the Korean dishes while our kid enjoys their Shusi so much win win for all. I would pass on the tempura but everything else is a true treat.

Yelp
This place is pretty decent for a Korean restaurant, although I would not say that it's the most authentic Korean food. Food: their menu has a wide choice for all taste and preferences. They offer sushi and other Korean dishes. The kimchi particularly was authentic and delicious. I had a Japchae Bulgogi Bap and it was tasty. I would like to try the sushi next time. Service: our food came pretty fast and the waitress brought us water in a timely manner. Nothing to complain about. Ambiance: the ambiance was cozy but pretty average. I do not

Yelp
First time trying sushi from here and I'm impressed! Tasted very fresh for the price.

Yelp
Solid sushi spot on Preston! Had gyoza, shrimp/veggie tempura, some rolls and nigiri. Everything was great! We were there late on a Saturday night, very quiet although we did see some people come in to grab takeout. Reasonable prices and good quality fish. Will definitely come back here if I'm in the neighbourhood!

Yelp
Great sushi. Good prices. It's pretty busy so service is fast. Especially with Uber eats and new delivery services, if you go in to eat you will likely get your food after the delivery people.

Yelp
Highly recommended!! You have to check this place out! I can safely say this little gem of a restaurant is one of the best in town! We order for take out and eat in regularly. Most other Japanese/Korean fusion restaurants can't compare to Kochu. Friendly staff, fast service, food is well presented, and tastes great! They have varied alcoholic beverages including sake and imported beers. They also have an amazing menu of food choices. Kochu is where I take friends and family visiting me out of town.

Yelp
I was here a few weeks ago during a Yelp event and had the pleasure of having one of the Bento box specials during this time. This restaurant is such a cute place, and while it is a bit small, they have a decent amount of seating squeezed into the area available. They have a widely extensive menu here that includes both Japanese and Korean cuisines, ranging from appetizers, soups, noodles, and sushi and sashimi choices. My bento box had two different maki rolls, one with salmon and one which I believe was the kamikaze shrimp. Both were fresh and delicious, and I especially noted that the salmon's texture was good, as some sushi places fish isn't always as soft as it should be. My favorite in the box was the japchae noodles, which are evidently made out of sweet potatoes. They were simply exquisite; I had never had them before, but I am already a fan. The decor is nice, with a lot of art on the walls; and I am also a sucker for anything painted a good orange. The owner and her sister that night were amazing, and the bathrooms were well-maintained and good. I'm going back here, and soon.

Yelp
Came here for dinner one night after liking the sushi I had on Elgin. I thought I'd try the restaurant after enjoying the smaller restaurant. The space was really clean and cozy, and service and food were great! For two people, we ordered 4 different kinds of sushi; the bulgogi roll, kochu roll, spicy salmon, and a dynamite roll. The bulgogi roll was cool since it was a blend of Korean and Japanese traditions coming together, and it was the first time I've tried beef in a sushi roll. It was different, but still delicious! All of the other rolls were also great! The service was great, and we were very well looked after! I'd definitely recommend eating here, since they prepare all of their food really well and have great service!

Yelp
Wanted to try the bibambap - I had only ever tried the dish once and it did not have the crispy rice. Service was very communicative. Seems like the majority of their business is take out/delivery, very few enjoying in their smaller dining room. Hot Sake was quite good and reasonably priced. Bibimbap was...OK. There was not much rice, which is good. The rice that was there was crispy and quite good. The bulgogi beef was tasty. The dish came with several vegetables, which is very traditional. Where the disappointment came in was the fact that all of the veggies were lacking in flavor. You would expect garlic, sesame oil, etc. The only flavor came from the spicy gochujang provided on the side. Despite spending the $15 on bibambap, we were both hungry w hours later. May return for the sushi.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious but the service is very very slow. Also, I had to go get my menu myself to the counter, went ask for water after sitting for 30 min, and wait 25 min for a bibimbap o. Top of it. Not to miss, but have a snack before.

Yelp
Delicious food! Sushi rolls are very well made. They have a nice selection of sake. I tried sparkling jelly sake for the first time and it was a fun experience. Friendly staff as well!

Yelp
We usually order sushi from Kochu at least once a month but tonight was the best we've ever had, sooo fresh and tender and the rice was especially moist... We love this place.

Yelp
I have gone to Kochu twice, both times I have gotten take out. The food was delicious and packed neatly for me and the staff were very friendly. I will continuing ordering from them in the future.

Yelp
Let's start with the good: The food wasn't bad. It wasn't the best, but it was above average for the price. On to the bad: Service took way too long. We were a group of 7, and it took about 20 minutes before the first plate arrived, not too bad, but the next plate was another 10, and so on. It took a good 60 minutes for everyone to get their food, and people served first were done by the time the last plate came out. Then came the mistakes, the wrong plates were given to the wrong people, orders were missed, and there was a general sense of confusion. Once these mistakes were pointed out, it took them yet more time to sort them out. By then, so much time had passed that the staff simply assumed we didn't want the missed orders. Fine, at that point, none of us had the will or the patients to give any more business to this establishment. Once the bills arrived, there were mistakes there too, we were charged for the aforementioned food that never came, and different peoples plates were grouped on the wrong bills. When we informed them of this, they told us to do the math and tell them the total and just pay them what we owed. Not impressed. Not going back.

Yelp
The first thing I will say about this place is, WOW IT IS SO CUTE. I love the decor of this place. I'm not really sure if I got the full "Kochu experience" as I was there on a Sunday at lunch time, but I want to go back because it just made me feel cool to be there. The food was pretty good... I had a stone bowl of beef and rice. I also loved their mochi.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and solid Korean food but sushi was off seasoning-wise. Would return but would choose more of the Korean fare. Polite and friendly staff.

Yelp
So went to Kochu Preston (I used to frequent the one on Elgin) for a Yelp event and love love loved it! We were given the Bento Box which is a great mixure of super fresh sushi, sweet potato noodles (mmmmmm) and delicious tempura veggies. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a little variety. The atmosphere is really clean and cute and cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
I was referred to this sushi bar by a friend, and I was certainly not disappointed. The rolls came out fresh, the service was friendly, and their rolls tasted absolutely fantastic. I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends on a night out in town!

Yelp
I come here all the time. The lunch boxes are the perfect sized meal, same with the sushi combos. I keep getting the first ones but I hope to try them all eventually. I'm a big fan of a combo with two great staples, one with their excellent spicy sauce, and then one additional roll, chef's choice- which has been different so far every time. I haven't tried the stir fry dish yet because the sushi really is my favourite in town. Take out is super quick too. Prices are reasonably low.

Yelp
Absolutley fantastic meal. Sushi was fresh and service was great. I am happy that I found this little gem. Small restaurant and super clean. Look forward to returning.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Small and tucked in next to La Grotta on Preston and Gladstone, the ambience is cosy but friendly. The daily menu is featured on a blackboard and changes everyday. They serve a combination of Korean and Japanese food....a range of sushi, bibimpap, maki rolls, and tempura at very moderate prices. The daily lunch box is a very good value; a bento box composed of 4 items accompanied by the pickled ginger and wasabi sauce. The sushi rolls are prepared expertly, and usually dressed with a light sauce refreshing to the palate (e.g. mango sauce). Japchae is usually prepared (seaweed noodles, light seasoned with fish sauce and sesame seeds). Service is friendly and the prices are very moderate.

Yelp
We love this place. It's in our neighborhood and it's our go to for good food. Not a lot of seating but a really welcoming and friendly place. Good selection including Korean and sushi. Love the chef specials.

Leah B.

Yelp
Great sushi, great Korean bowls and excellent service! Loved my dinner and I'll definitely be a returning customer.

Yelp
Kochu on Preston is a landmark for sushi and Korean food fans west of Kent St. More than the Elgin location Kochu '2' is a snazzy remodelled old house with decent seating and a funky boutique style decor. They carry sake wine and beer, snd make the same great product as they have for years on Elgin. If you like their first location, you will love their new spot on Preston.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Kochu on Preston is bright and modern looking inside. We have ordered take-out twice and finally decided to eat-in. There are only a few tables as it is designed as a take-out/delivery or quick eats spot but it is sufficient and very practical, they even have a high chair which was nice because we came with our 1 year old. The woman who greeted us and took our order (assuming she is the owner) was extremely nice and accommodating. Although I'm pretty sure the owners are Korean, there aren't too many Korean options on the menu. We have always ordered those Korean options so I can't comment on the sushi. This time we tried the kimbap roll (which in Korea is almost like a convenience store sushi) and it was very fresh and reminiscent of our days in Seoul. I had the dolsot bibimbop and my husband tried the kimchi bacon fried rice. Everything was great. Portions aren't huge but they are sufficient. My only negative comment is the lack of traditional korean side dishes (kimchi etc) with the order of the Korean menu items. I love those and wish they were included. Definitely returning.
