"Jugyuan is named after the famous Zen painting series, Jugyuzu, or ‘Pictures of Ten Oxen’. It has a sukiya-style house and beautiful garden. The chef incorporates seasonal festivals into his menu, imparting a sense of the customs of the ancient capital. Part of the attraction of Jugyuan is that meat dishes are a key part of the menu. Western techniques of flame control are applied here, thanks to the involvement of Hiramatsu, famous for its French cuisine. Kodaiji Jugyuan explores new directions while safeguarding the traditions of Kyoto gastronomy." - Michelin Inspector

We had a really lovely experience. The service was outstanding, the views were serene and the whole place was peaceful. The food presentation was Michelin star level. I only gave 4 stars because for my American palette, the traditional Japanese food was hard for me to eat. It’s definitely an acquired taste.

The service, ambience, presentation and our hostess was par excellent. It was one of the most calming meals with the most beautiful ode to the senses with private seating, beautiful presentation and tableware, and seasonal ingredients. (Service 5/5, Ambience 5/5) We would consider our palate to be fairly advanced, we found the flavours to be subtle and catered to a western palate, as it does have a french influence in the way flavours are harmonised. (4.5/5 Food)

We’ve done our fair share of one star kaiseki restaurants in Japan and if I was going to recommend one for western palettes it would be this. In my experience these restaurants are often either completely impossible to understand and unapproachable or dumbed down so much that they lose their essence. What I loved about this restaurant was that everything was so explained in English, the dishes weren’t changed but they were more selected for a western palette, and the restaurant itself was beautiful.

Amazing Kaiseiki dining experience at this 1* Michelin restaurant. The food was superb and really showcased the freshness of ingredients and skills of the chef, the service was top notch and the private dining room was the icing on the cake. Our waitress/service crew was waiting for us outside the main door and led us all the way in, and patiently helped us with all our queries and photo taking. Felt like a royalty being shown around the beautiful garden, and even escorted us to the exit. The tranquil location and view from the windows really is a drastic difference from the messy/crowded streets just outside the restaurant. Felt super relaxed just enjoying the food and soaking in the ambience. Price point for lunch was good, not too expensive for the entire experience. Would highly recommend.

Google
10/10 dining experience! If you have a chance, I would highly recommend you to have a meal here! Not only you can get the best view of Kyoto, but also can experience the Japanese way of excellent customer service. While we’re walking towards to the restaurant, we saw there were two staffs already waiting outside of the restaurant for us. The restaurant inside is so cozy and zen. Food wise, fresh and delightful, no doubt! It was a rainy day that day but we didn’t bring an umbrella so when we were leaving, the staff already prepared two umbrellas for us. It’s the small gestures that count and these two umbrellas were such a life saver for us on that day! This dining experience has became one of the highlights of our trip! Would definitely come back next time!

First off all, service and atmosphere were flawless! But the food was mediocre at best. The sea bream sashimi was so bad that I had to chew it for almost a full minute. It is unacceptable at a restaurant at this level. The rest of the plates had no subtle flavors or harmony in between them which is quite essential in Kaiseki. If you want to experience a meal in an authentic Japanese atmosphere with very good service, it is okay. But if food is what matters you the most, like myself, there are places with much much better food in Kyoto. Food wise it was a big disappointment for me. I will not be going back.

This 1 Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant delivered an unforgettable experience. Our kaiseki dinner was a truly royal experience, beginning with the attentive staff who made us feel incredibly welcome. We were fortunate to be seated in a private room, adding an exclusive touch to our evening. Though nighttime obscured the view, we knew the restaurant was nestled within a beautiful garden, creating a serene atmosphere. The dinner menu showcased the essence of traditional kaiseki cuisine, featuring exquisite seasonal ingredients that elevated each dish. Every course was a testament to the chef's artistry and dedication to culinary excellence. I highly recommend this restaurant for a remarkable kaiseki experience.

Google
you can feel how time-consuming the dishes are made, some flavors are what I had never had. it's awesome! there is also fantastic sunset view. However, as I could not understand the deliciousness of the kaiseki, it was a little too expensive for me... bought an experience, high tier kaiseki.
