Google
Visited this establishment during a trip to the Richmond area. I love Korean food and trying "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants. Thus spot did not disappoint. It is a small cozy location with very limited seating but is nice spot off of the beaten path. The food very tasty and reasonably priced. The service was pretty good even though there was one person running the floor. I would definitely return to this spot when I'm in the area.

Google
Was lucky enough to get a seat at the bar before the rush. Literally every table and seat at the bar was occupied before 7pm. Jason was the best! He was running around taking care of everyone and everything. Happy hour from 5-7. Menu not pictured but it was about $1 off drinks. Beef bulgogi was mouth watering. I was only going to eat half but it was so good I was scraping the bowl.

Google
Absolutely delicious vegan and vegetarian options! So fresh and flavorful, already craving it again. Place was busy and understaffed. Great for a small group of 2-4 people but space is too small to accommodate larger groups (5 or more). Regardless, we had a great time and the food was so tasty that we will definitely be back.

Google
First time here. Food was really good and so was the service. One guy tending to customers but he was really friendly. My only complaint is I was charged for an item I did not order nor received and did not realize it until I had left the restaurant.

Eva D.

Google
The chicken katsu in my kimbap was dry, but overall good flavors, the tofu in their house bowl was delicious. The restaurant was busy at 7pm on a Friday and with only one server, the service was bound to be lacking. I think it’s a restaurant that serves solid food, I would be back.

Google
Outstanding place. Food extremely good. We tried wings, bulgogi bowl and dumplings noodle soul and all 3 were perfect. Staff was polite and will come to the table many times to make sure everything was fine or ask if we needed anything else. Place is small.

Google
Visited Richmond for the weekend and was told by my friend to stop by Kogi. It did not disappoint me at all. We ordered the kimchi pancake and it's honestly one of the best I've ever had. Good portion size and flavorful. I also got the bulgogi house bowl and the meat is spectacular. It's sweet, savory, and just melts in your mouth. My girl got the katsu chicken house bowl and loved it. Overall, great restaurant and would highly recommend others to try it out. They have a ton of drink options, good music, good portions, and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. Definitely on par with some of the Korean restaurants in Flushing, NY.

Google
Good Korean restaurant food is very authentic. The only downside is that they are all very sweet. I had the chicken wing in spicy flavor, it’s not that spicy instead it’s pretty sweet, it’s very juicy inside and crispy outside, comes in full wing size. I also tried the tofu Soondubu. It’s very flavorful, again there’s too much sweetness inside which is a bit unnecessary. Service is fast, the place is casual and more divy vibe

Yelp
Wow!!! Everything we had was beyond flavorful. The spicy udon with the beef - best udon stir fry I've ever had. It was the perfect combo of heat, sweet, and savory. Bugolgi kimbap and chicken kimbap - the beef one was my favorite as I felt it was more flavorful, but they were both good Pork lettuce wraps - pork and Kimchi had a nice kick however, I wish it did come with more lettuce.. Bugolgi bowl - one of the best bowls I've had. It was loaded with meat and veggies. Service was beyond accommodating and so nice. If I'm ever back in this area, I will make sure to be back

Yelp
We live really close to Kogi and I like going there for convenience. Several years ago, I used to adore the food here, now it's hit or miss. I've notice their fusion dishes are where they shine now. Whenever we do come, we're able to get a seat immediately. The people who work here are kind. Do know that service can feel a little slow at moments. The space itself is cute and the paintings on the wall are nice. The best thing I've tried here recently were what my friends ordered which were the bulgogi loaded fries and the bulgogi quesadilla. They have a fun time with fusion here! I got the shiitake mushroom savory udon noodles on my last visit and wished they had a bit more flavor. The time before that I got the japchae that was way too oily for me. My fiancé likes this spot a lot, so we do go a couple times a year.

Yelp
Got me a lil bento box for take out and it was a great balance with a lot of flavor. The ambiance looked cute and the girl who took my order was super nice ! I'll definitely be coming back to sit and dine in. I also got this box for about $18 with tax !

Yelp
My family had dinner at Kogi. The restaurant was quiet on a holiday weekend but I imagine it's quite popular with Richmond college kids. The food was delicious but the friendly service really sealed the deal. Our waitress offered food and drink suggestions and even brought samples of two different Suju rice liquors. For dinner I enjoyed the bulgogi rice bowl with the tangy barbecue sauce.

Yelp
The food here is a 5 out of 5 and the waitress we had was very helpful and fast. For some reason they were playing gangster rap and it is hard to have a nice meal while people are yelling obscenities and singing about killing people. Also 2 employees were wearing socks and sandals. A little more professionalism would make this a 5 star spot.
google avatar

Erik O.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I have been talking about the Bulgogi fries for 2 years, but couldn't remember where we had them. She finally remembered so we took a group with us and everything everyone had was amazing, people are still talking about it days later. 10/10 will definitely be back. Now if they could just open one in the 757 I'd happily eat there atleast twice a week.

Yelp
Good food, hole-in-the-wall small restaurant. Let me start by saying that we went to Kogi's just as they got slammed from a conference around the corner. Wait times in the area were up and we were hungry. The service was excellent - while the wait was long and the waitress was solo initially, she was very, very nice and kept going with a smile and tried to get everyone seated as fast as she could. The food took a long time to come out also - luckily we weren't in a rush. The food was very good. Menu available here https://kogirva.com/house-bowls We had the bulgogi bowl and the Katsu chicken bowl. The bulgogi bowl was delicious! The only thing I wasn't as crazy about was the kimchi. While I have the occasional kimchi, I'm definitely not a connoisseur. I think we'll need to give Kogi another shot when they're less busy.

Emily S.

Yelp
I order food from here on uber eats pretty often because I love their bulgogi kimchi kimbap. I've also tried their katsu chicken bowl which is a generous portion of perfectly fried chicken, rice, kimchi, and all the yummy components you think of with Katsu. The food genuinely tastes fresh and delicious so I would highly recommend to anyone looking for solid Korean food in RVA.

Yelp
I love Korean food, so came here with some friends. It's a hole in the wall, with a nice vibe. Limited seating, so we sat at the bar. I ordered the bulgogi bowl with an egg. It looked great, but tasted pretty average. There was not much rice, and the rice wasn't done right. Normally the rice on the outside, next to the bowl, cooks to a crunch. Not so here. I think they added too much water. In fairness, there was a good amount of meat. And the egg ($2 extra) was executed well (runny yolk). I walked away very full. But there were too many key negatives to offer more than three stars.
google avatar

Saira U.

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday night, right before closing but thankfully they were accommodating to our rather large group. Menus are done on your phone via QR codes-- only wish is that it would be on one page with tabs for different categories (kinda like meal delivery service) rather than 3 separate pages. Ordered Soy Garlic wings-- came with 5 very sticky wings-- the flavor was really nice, though it could've been crispier. And the price was not bad either!
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
I found this spot as it was a casual place near our hotel. J Kogi has great happy hour specials, great beers on tap, local brews. We ordered the tofu wrap and hubby got the bulgogi rice bowl. I loved my tofu lettuce wrap. There was a perfect amount of spiciness. While the food was good, the restaurant interior really left nothing to be desired. Inside looks rather tired with vinyl floors that didn't look like it was ever mopped. Overall, food is good, hh drinks even better, however don't stay too long inside the restaurant.

Yelp
I finally stopped by here while attending the second Street festival. Cute spot, on a nice quiet corner in the beautifully Black, historic Jackson Ward. I had the kimbap...loved it! I made a few modifications and they were very accommodating. I ordered the shrimp tempura without the crab stick and cream cheese, substituted avocado and radish instead. It was fire . I definitely want to dine in next time because I love an Asian restaurant that truly delivers on flavor! It's close to work so I'll be going back soon and I'll get pictures!

Yelp
I had a really tasty meal from Kogi. I grabbed some as I was heading out of town on the Amtrak and ordered the bulgogi ribeye bowl and katsu kimbap. I picked it up from the restaurant, which was filled with sunlight and was welcoming. The staff member who helped me was very friendly and efficient, as I had an Uber waiting outside. The food traveled really well and there was a lot of food. The kimbap were very filled, though you do need the sauce, otherwise they were a little dry (but still very good). The sweet honey mayo was incredible, definitely try that one with the kimbap. The bulgogi was delicious, though I ordered it with mixed scallion salad and I didn't really have many scallions. I recommend trying Kogi if you're in the Richmond area.
google avatar

Nikki J.

Yelp
Perfect place for your korean food faves. I can never visit and not get multiple items. My fave is probably the scallion pancakes. Always nice and fluffy with a bit of crisp. I've also been working my way through the drink menu. It is pretty small, so it can get very crowded on weekends. Also, they don't have a ton of staff -- every time I go the bartender is the server. No biggie for me, but don't expect to be in and out when you visit.
google avatar

Gregory F.

Yelp
A true hidden gem! Super un-presuming on the outside, but once you get in and are surrounding by the delightful smells of quality Korean cooking, you know you're at-home. We just did some quick takeout and the service was quick and friendly. Typically takeout bibimbap bowls are really difficult to replicate the in-store experience, but I found this one delicious! Generous portion with perfect cuts of ribeye. Perfectly cooked egg to top it all off that looked like it was straight out of a magazine photoshoot. My girlfriend LOVES Kimchi Pancakes and the crisp on this one was out of this world which you can presume just based on the color of it alone. Overall a great experience - will have to try eating in the dining room next time!
google avatar

Christian E.

Yelp
Definitely an upgrade from their previous management, Kogi is a vibe that is next to the Richmond Convention center. Their drinks are pretty good. Not gonna lie the Korean Trash can got me buzzed. They also have classic bowls and sides like a typical Korean restaurant, but I do have to say they are on the pricier side. Nonetheless, it's a vibe there, and the food has gotten better from years back.

YoungMi P.

Yelp
We tried the bulgogi ribeye bowl and pork belly tteokbokki. The bulgogi was flavorful, but the banchan lost its refreshing crunch--possibly from the heat of the bowl or the direct sun on our table up front. The tteokbokki was the highlight: perfect texture, rich pork belly, and a sauce that nailed the sweet-spicy balance. Service was friendly, but with the steady walk-in traffic, a few extra staff members would help make the experience more personal. Overall, tasty food and a good visit--we'd return, just not to that sun-drenched table.

Yelp
Bulgogi Loaded Fries are fire Have been coming to this place for years & there's something for the whole family - even my infant son enjoyed it Cozy spot right in the heart of downtown RVA - good service & vibes

Yelp
Stopped in for a late dinner with friends around 9pm on a Friday night. The entire place was empty and only a few people came in while we were dining, mostly take out. The service was hands off but our server was easily flagged down from the bar. Definitely not the place to bring a large group, it's nice a cozy with most of the tables being 4 tops. I really really wanted to love this place but it was missing something for me. The food was alright, we ordered the bulgogi kimchi kimbap and the soondubu soup with veggies. They do have a lot of menu items to choose from and a lot of drinks as well. I will give this place another shot before and try some different menu items. An 18% service fee is automatically applied to the bill, we had to check with the server to make sure it does go to her, which she stated it did.

Yelp
This spot was a total hit. We order 4 meals and everything was delicious. Very clean. Staff was friendly and professional
google avatar

The Beaner Grower ..

Yelp
Twas a lot more bussin and filling than i anticipated. The fwa sauce was better than sex and made the meal complete. Thank you for tuning in. Solid 7.7/10
google avatar

Julio H.

Yelp
Excellent! The location is small and the place fills fast. There is food was excellent and the portions were large, a bowl can easily feed 2. The staff was very friendly, and we did not wait long for our food. When we walked in place was lively and we felt welcome. I was told because it is close to the convention center, it fill fast if there is an event there. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Rhonda D.

Yelp
There's something slightly irreverent and hipster about this place. I say so because while my family dined in here, the musical playlist mostly consisted of unedited rap music that dropped every f bomb, MFer, and n word, and my teenage son got an eyeful from the scantily clad lady bartender. But I'm not judging. Just saying that it might be a bit much for anyone who is ultra conservative. With that said, the food is effing delicious. It's Korean soul food. I ordered the Korean wings with honey butter sauce as well as the fried rice, and the chef delivered on both of those dishes. The chicken is certified five finger lickin' delicious; the fried rice was borderline too salty, yet I still ate very bite. If I had to change one thing I'd have the egg over easy because the egg was fried hard and took a some effort to break up. Overall, this place was a go find and I'd recommend it to anyone in search of some soulful Korean cuisine. Flavors are on point!
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
The twice-fried chicken wings came out fresh and hot. The twice-fried difference was quite noticeable as the wings had a perfect crunchy crisp, and the soy garlic glaze was the right choice given the various options. The bulgogi ribeye bowl kept the momentum going as it really had a great combination of fresh ingredients - rice, soybean sprouts, kimchi, carrots, spinach, cucumber, and pickled onions. Bonus points for the clay pot, which caused some of the rice to be extra crispy. I also really enjoyed the healthy portion of bulgogi ribeye and the addition of pickled onions. Quality, quantity, and value. $9 for the wings and $15 for the bowl was really a fantastic deal. Also, kudos to the only hostess/waitress/bartender who was running the entire dining room by herself and excelling at it.

Michaela S.

Yelp
Spicy short rib noodles came with 2.65 oz of meat... pitiful and criminal for a $20 meal
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Amazing food at reasonable prices. Let me break it down for you! The space: the inside is a bit small. When we came there were only a couple other tables so I imagine it gets crowded in there over the weekend. because there weren't many people inside, the music felt a little too loud. It was also explicit so that may be a problem for children. The food: incredible. We had no leftovers! We ordered the dubu kimbap roll, Shiitake mushroom udon noodles, and Japchae. I can't speak highly enough about these dishes. The flavor profile and spices were *chefs kiss* The service: for it being not busy as it was, the service was a little slow. Overall, amazing Korean street food and I can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Claudia F.

Yelp
I've only had the katsu chicken bowl, but it was so good and I enjoy the vibe of the place, so I am very much looking forward to my next visit. Also, it was in this bowl I discovered my love for kimchi so huge plus.
google avatar

Angela F.

Yelp
walked here on a quiet little wednesday night with my parter! the service was attentive, and pretty hands off. the restaurant is good for smaller groups, max 5-6 people. The floors are wonky, so keep that in mind if you're not as sure-stepped. Easy to trip and fall. the food was yummy! not too many good korean places in richmond, but this one is fine! has the essentials. a decent selection for a vegetarian as well.

Otto V.

Yelp
Awesome service w great food. The bar tended waitress is the best in RVA. Love this place.
google avatar

Cameron N.

Yelp
A friend suggested this place to catch up. I wasn't incredibly hungry, so I only got apps - the korean wings in honey gochu and the fried house dumplings in beef & chicken. Delicious! The bartender was super sweet and very attentive. I'm very indecisive and she helped decide my drinks based off what so told her I liked. They were all so good and some of them included popping bobas, which I'd never had in an alcoholic drink. Can't wait to return and try more of the menu.

Leah S.

Yelp
The tapioca pearls in my boba were the softest things I've ever had the pleasure of chewing, and my spicy shortrib noodles were PHENOMENAL. 10/10, will be returning. The service was great too!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere. The food is good. But somehow misses great. I had the short ribs lettuce wrap. That may have been my mistake as shorts ribs don't wrap very well, but I didn't know how it would be served. The ribs had a lot of fat and difficult to separate fat from meat. The lettuce was too small to wrap. As a combination it didn't really work. The overall flavor was good. The draft beer was flat. The waitress worked the entire restaurant and bar. She was very very busy. She tried hard to keep up and was efficient but it was too much to manage everything for one person.
google avatar

Jocel G.

Yelp
It's been probably over 5 years since I've had J Kogi back in college, it's surprisingly kind of the same but different. It's still comforting and similar tastes but with a few modifications. The bulgogi bowl was delicious with all the veggies and sauces. It stayed hot and warm throughout the entire meal because of the clay pot. The soup was comforting, warm and delicious since it was raining that day. The broth was tasty but not overpowering. A con would be that there isn't a parking lot, which isn't uncommon in Richmond. But there is a street parking. The wait wasn't long at all either for all the food which is a big plus. I'd definitely come back again!
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
The food is great and atmosphere is welcoming, the Kimbap here is amazing and definitely recommend the cheese corn

Melissa R.

Yelp
Delicious food and good service. It was ready quickly and all 3 dishes we tried were fantastic. Will be back!

Yelp
[Pandemic review - 2020] Was on borderline hangry when I walked into this place for dinner. It has a college bar vibe (dark interior - see pics). Though nobody was there when we came in Oct since it was still during the pandemic. The employee behind the counter very nice and helped explain the menu. Food did take a good 20 mins or so to fulfill 3 orders. It did feel like forever since I was borderline hangry. But it did come steamy hot. We got two bulgogi type rice bowls and some kimchi fries. The bulgogi rice bowls were fine, nothing crazy good. The fries were all soggy under the toppings, so if you like that they are fine. Personally I like my kimchi fried crispy. I guess I was spoiled trying some phenomenal kimchi fries in a restaurant in Charlotte. But the flavors were all there. Portion size was pretty sizable for the price. Overall: a good Korean spot in the heart of Richmond.

Frances M.

Yelp
( NO STARS.. I'd give the space of an atoms darkness for this ridicule ) Entering the building; I noticed the aroma of spit. Giving chances, not thinking too much into it. (We still sat down. I've come here before and the food was amazing! ) When I sat, the service was pretty slow but decent. Not much to think of, I spoke with my friend and then the food was served. I noticed it tasted funny, but didn't say much because maybe it were my taste buds. When the check were served; she only gave me the customer receipt. Confused, I still gave her my card to run and when I ran it, she said there were no funds ( even after I ran both cards ( she typed them in and everything) Then said "FREE OF CHARGE, I GOT IT". I left, feeling odd afterwards; bot knowing why she would run both my cards when I knew they had funds. Shortly afterwards, my throat grew sore. Davina spit in my food and gave it to me for free! Nasty! I'm contemplating on pressing charges, but I'm trying to give the benefit of doubt. EVERYTHING SUCKED!

Yelp
Second visit and just wasn't as impressed with the food this time... was able to try more and different things but realized it might have been better to go with what we had before. Dumplings had a very chewy texture for the outside and weird filling. Wings were our favorite again.. they are that good and awesome sauced with soy garlic. Boba cocktail was awesome - fun way to have a cocktail. My Short Rib Noodle Stir Fry was not as expected... way too over powerful in the gochujang sauce... just a few bites in and my stomach was doing flips (yes I eat and love spicy foods). Had to get a cup of white rice to eat the meat and some of the kinchi to save myself from torture. Kiddo's bulgogi/katsu bowl was ok... kimchi meat was a bit sticky sweet sauced and chicken katsu was cooked well. Same waitress as our first visit and she is great, but only one person making drinks and serving may get interesting if it got busier.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I tried it for the first time in 2021, we specifically went for the boba cocktails but apparently they were under new management & needed a new liquor license. So I recently returned with my friends & sister to give them a try. I was very disappointed that the Richmond happy hours listings are outdated & they do NOT offer any cocktail or food specials anymore during happy hour. They were out of the taro cocktail but it ended up being for the best because I tried my friend's matcha boba cocktails & it really didn't taste like matcha, it also wasn't strong w/alcohol, & the boba itself wasn't very good or sweet enough. It's way over priced, $15 for one glass, so I don't recommend. I ultimately got the creamy limeade which was good. We got an order of the bulgogi fries which were decent but also overpriced. It is 4x cheaper to get an order of plain fries. I tried the corn dog which was decent besides the fact toward the bottom the dough was still raw. They did remake it for me after I brought it to their attention. The service wasn't very good overall though. There weren't many people here but there was only one waitress who was also the bartender. It took ages for the corn dog to come out, which is why it was extra surprising that it wasn't done. One other thing is it's weirdly dark in there, they'd benefit from some more lighting. & also more seating large groups. I was also frustrated that they charged us a 20% included tip, especially because the group wasn't even there the same time or sitting together.

Alexandra A.

Yelp
We got the steamed chicken dumplings, dak tori chicken bowl with no spicy no cry, and bulgogi ribeye bowl with donkatsu sauce. I loved the dumplings. The sauce was really good. I like the dak tori chicken better than the bulgogi because there was more flavor. The bowls are good, but I want to try something else. It's a very casual environment. We went on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't crowded and the waitress was really attentive.
google avatar

P.K. S.

Yelp
It was really delicious! However, the takeout portions were disappointing. I got the Spicy Short Rib Noodle Stir Fry, and it didn't even fill up half the container. Also, there were approximately 4 pieces of kimchi. The sauce was very flavorful and not too spicy.
google avatar

Emma W.

Yelp
YUM. The beef bulgogi was so delicious you NEED to get the bulgogi fries. The bulgogi bowl was also amazing and a large portion full of strong flavors! (I loved the kimchi and pickled onions especially). The kimbap was much more food than I expected, very good! The service was fine, a bit scattered but we were in no rush. The ambiance was good! Loud but vibrant cozy place with bar seating as well. Not good for large parties. Not a lot of vegetarian menu options, but there is a tofu bulgogi bowl and japchae, always delish. ALSO I have to mention there are great happy hour deals 4-7 pm and BOBA COCKTAILS I will be back on a night that I'm not driving

Dolores A.

Yelp
Didn't hit the mark. Reviews looked good so we tried it. Walked in and there was no wait but the worker was just idk, blah and said sit anywhere. Then after checking her tables came and brought us water and took our order. Food came quick enough but she brought us our food and never came back. Food was all very sweet, lacked that Korean spice I look for. Meat in my stir fry was fatty . But the Kimchi Jiggae was so bland other than a sugar sweet tomato taste to it. I took 1 bite of it and pushed it away. Wasn't edible. I had to go find the server and just asked for a box for the kimbop so we could leave. Told her about how the soup was and she just looked at me. I asked for check, paid and left.

Yelp
Awesome food and good vibes!! Service is a touch slow with a small staff, but the food easily makes up for it. Expect sizable portions!
google avatar

Yelp
This small joint near vcu and walking distance from the greater richmond center conference center is conveniently located downtown. Chill r&b music.. and designed space.. it's perfect. They got a bar and a flat screen for sports. They serve to give "a little seoul city" style of cooking. Although I've never been there.. Kogi has many typical Korean street foods with a twist. Pork Belly Tteokbokki and Blackened shrimp kim nap...WhAT?!! Yes sirr... I couldn't turn them down. It takes the 20 min to get your food cooked. The blacked shrimp has grilled jumbo shrimp with carrot, spinach, egg. It says it's gluten free and for many vegans they have various options to accommodate mostly everyone's taste. Let me tell u tho.. was I in love! The house sauce with the blackened shrimp kimbap gave element of spice from the gochujang. The flavors were on point! I Love it!! love it
google avatar

Marin W.

Yelp
I absolutely loved Kogi! We got takeout paired with some soju we had at home, and it didn't disappoint. We tried the soy garlic Korean chicken wings, haemul scallion pancake, sticky braised short ribs, chicken katsu kimbab, bulgogi ribeye bowl with an egg, and the shiitake mushroom udon noodles. While the ribs were a bit dry for my liking, they had great flavor, and everything else was unbelievably good! I especially loved the scallion pancake and mushroom noodles! They did a great job packaging the takeout and our order was perfect. I love Korean bbq and soju, so I can't wait to come dine in and try the Korean bbq pork belly lettuce wraps!

Yelp
It was very busy during lunch on a Saturday. Carlos was a great server but was slammed since mostly all of the seating was filled and he was alone. Service would have been better if the restaurant was adequately staffed. We enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. The pork belly Tteokbokki was deliciously spicy but had small amounts of rice cake and pork belly. Tempura shrimp kimbap with donkatsu sauce was good as was the spicy tofu jorrim. Bulgogi loaded fries was small for the price. Atmosphere was nothing special, tight seating and dark lighting.

J KOGI Ratings: 3.9/5 Food: 4.25/5 - I was craving for some Korean food, so I decided to get dinner with my siblings and his girlfriend at J KOGI. It was one of the few Korean places in the area with relatively good ratings, vibes, and indoor seating. It was a solid selection for Korean food, but service was way too slow. Please see the description of the items we got last night. - Kimchi Pancake [GET]: This is a thick, savory and spicy kimchi pancake mixed with onions and scallions. It was fried wonderfully with a burnt and crispy outer layer placed on top of a bed of cabbage, but still got the chewy and doughy texture. I like the fermented kimchi, super sour, tangy, and spicy, which added a great acidity to the pancake. It got a good flour to kimchi ratio too, so overall pretty decent pancake they served. - Dak Tori Chicken Bowl [GET]: This bowl is packed with tasty and deliciousness. The spicy grilled chicken thighs are well-marinated and packed with flavors, but maybe a bit too much seasonings. I had to mix it up with the rice on the bottom really well to balance the saltiness from the chicken. I added a sunny side egg, and it's fried perfectly with a running egg yolk. The toppings were amazing, and they nailed it on their house kimchi, carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts, and wood ear mushrooms. My favorite was probably their kimchi, because it was fresh and sour. Be sure to mix everything together and enjoy every bite. Although the it tasted more like a fusion bowl, but it was good and solid. The bowl is tiny making it hard to stir, but it's packed with food. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - This is supposed to be a dive bar, but it is more of your typical small local Korean restaurant in the area, but with a full cocktail bar. The interior is small with limited seating, dimly-lit with background music too. The ambiance is causal, fun, and cozy. It is not too loud, so a pretty good place to catch up with friends. There's lots of free street parking nearby. Price: 4/5 - We got the kimchi pancake to share for $9 and they were thick. For entrees, we each got a rice bowl. I got the dak tori chicken rice bowl for $13, and others are around the same price point. The portions are great and huge, and I was definitely full walking out of J KOGI. It was worth it and a steal for the portion size and taste of the food. Service: 3.5/5 - There was only one staff working there, and the service was really slow. The food probably took over 45 minutes to come out after we finished our kimchi pancake. The entire dinner took us over 2 hours, which was not expected. They really need to hire another person to serve the tables. A place like J KOGI should not take this long to dine in, and I was a bit annoyed by it. BLUF: Not your authentic Korean restaurant, but got more of a fusion twist to it. If you are craving for Korean in downtown Richmond, then please come support this local place. The rice bowls here are delicious and huge portion sizes, so I definitely recommend it. Got a low key and very chill vibes. I will return one day when I am in the area again, or maybe get take-out because might be faster.
