17 Must-Try Indian Restaurants Around D.C.

"A mix of traditional and modern, no-frills Kohinoor Dhaba highlights the best of North Indian food in Arlington. Try the fragrant goat biryani or keep it simple with its selection of naan, curries, and tandoor specials like shrimp or salmon tikka cooked in a clay oven." - Tierney Plumb

Absolutely Terrible Experience – Not Worth the Hype! I visited Kohinoor Dhaba with high expectations, but it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had. I ordered Paneer Chilli, Chole Bhature, 4 Garlic Naans, Kadhi Paneer, and Malai Kofta. Except for the Malai Kofta, which was just decent, everything else was shockingly bad. The Kadhi Paneer was the worst dish I've ever tasted—bland, watery, and tasted like it had no effort put into it. The Paneer Chilli was soggy and flavorless, nothing like what it should be. The Chole Bhature was a complete disappointment—chole lacked any spice or depth, and the bhature felt old and greasy. The Garlic Naan good The quality was substandard, and it felt like the food was just thrown together without care. Definitely not worth the money or the visit. I would never recommend this place.

The portions are extremely small for the price. The chicken tikka masala tastes alright, but I got 2 small takeout tubs of food, I would guess it was $1 worth of rice and $2 worth of chicken cubes and sauce. I paid $20 for this dish. Not worth it.

Google
Two pings here. The portions were happy meal size. The tiki masala was flavorful and the chicken within was tender. I expect more for a dinner portion and left hungry. Same with the bowl of soup. The chicken soup tasted like canned broth. Otherwise it was spicy and warm but also pitifully small. I left here and had to eat a second dinner.

During our visit, the restaurant was not crowded, with only a few people present. We ordered other dishes including chicken soup, which unfortunately took a rather long time, approximately 30-40 minutes, to arrive at our table. While the server was polite and the establishment appeared clean, I must admit that the soup did not meet my expectations. I found it to be lacking in taste and quality. Moreover, I personally felt that the food at Kohinoor Dhaba did not truly embody the authentic flavors of Indian cuisine. The dishes, including the biryani we ordered for takeout, did not live up to the standards I would expect from traditional Indian cuisine. Despite these observations, I would like to emphasize that the service at Kohinoor Dhaba was commendable, with polite and attentive staff member. The cleanliness of the restaurant also deserves recognition.

Google
Facilities - Watch you don’t bang your head entering the sit down area of the restaurant. I visited Mar 24, the restroom was backed up. Food - dishes served here are not authentic. We ordered Lamb Roganjosh, we were served a yellow thick gravy based lamb dish on the sweetish side. Our second order was for a Dal Makhani we were served a dal with mixed lentils akin to ‘Maa ki Dal’. So beware of what you order. Not recommended.

This is a great place for Indian Food, one of my favorites I’ve been to overall. I’ve been here four times so far with one of them dining in. There are plenty of tables in the dining room but I wouldn’t recommend a large party here unless you’re only bringing 1-2 cars. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and she loves this place for the wide variety of things she can eat.

Google
Absolutely DELICIOUS! I've never gone to an Indian restaurant and left disappointed, and yesterday was no exception. I asked the misses waiting us for a recommendation to which she suggested the Chicken Tandoori. The dine-in is on the lower level and is quaint and cozy, nothing fancy (I'd take a date here). One thing I was kinda hoping for was options for spice level of my food (I like it extra spicy) but this is just my personal preference.

The staff went above and beyond to make our dining experience memorable. We arrived just about closing time and the staff accomodated every request and waited until we were done without being intrusive. From appetizers to desserts, this restaurant exceeded all our expectations! The items were custom made for kids as needed. The ambience is so cozy and classy making it a home like atmosphere. Fresh, delicious and amazing food. Highly recommend.Try the Goat Buna with roti basket.

Yelp
Outstanding service and amazing food! I asked for suggestions, since I usually get Tika Masala! She recommended the Tandoori chicken, and it was amazing! Also tried the chicken Pakora! Delicious! Portions were enormous, 2 meals for me and 1 for my hubby!

Yelp
Delicious and super fresh food!!! Love that I live close by here because this is my go-to when I crave Indian food. Highly recommend their kormas, naans, samosa chaat, Rogan josh, paneer kulcha, and mango lassi!! Honestly I have no doubt everything on their menu is, I just have to work my way through it all. Their portions are quite big and the chicken breast pieces they use in their curries are not dry like some other places. Their basmati rice is so fragrant and heavenly. The dining room downstairs feels like an auntie's living room, especially with the news playing on the TV, so ambiance isn't their strong suit. Come here for the amazing food and friendly owners

Yelp
After a long fight from San Diego to the east coast and only having a complementary biscotti on American Airlines, it was nice to finally enjoy a delicious dinner at Kohinoor Dhaba an Indian Restaurant in Arlington, VA. For appetizer we had the #8 Mixed Veggies samosa it was a bit spicy and dry for me. I give it a 3.8/5. For dinner we ordered the #47 Lamb Vandalu. It was spicy but delicious sauce with right amount of spices and give it a 4/5. We also ordered the #50 Chicken tikka masala with one order of #22 Garlic Naan bread and both were OUTSTANDING and give it 5/5!! Definitely coming back for these two. The ambiance was not the fanciest but the service was great and restaurant was very clean with nice photos of temples in India. Give this place a try when in the area! Happy Yelping :)

Yelp
I had been hearing about this place in Crystal City, over by the Enterprise car rentals/.Some said they had been going there for years. It has been there for 15 years. Last night we showed up. It's a two story building and the pickup driver told us upstairs is for pickup and the downstairs is for dine- in. We were warmly greeted and ushered into the dining room. So clean, lots of tables and chairs and not crowded. I ordered lamb tiki masala and the lamb was so tender. I've never had lamb so tender and the rice was perfect.... The nan was warm and tasty and never got hard like some bread does when it cools. I ordered a small Kingfisher and several water refills. My Queen had chicken Tiki Masala and it was amazing, tasteful and tender. I'm planning my next trip.

Yelp
If you are looking for classic, unstuffy Indian food that is phenomenal, this the place. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall. The dining room is in a basement, the tablecloths are plastic, the floor is tiled. It's not a fancy place. But the food is worth it. I got the muttar paneer which was the perfect level of spice, it had lots of flavor and was sooo creamy. I got an order of naan with it and it was freshly made. My companions got the tikka masala and lamb curry and they both raved about them. The service was very slow - it took almost 40 minutes to get our meal. It wouldn't have been a problem normally, but we were on a tight schedule, so it was a problem that it also took awhile to get our check. But I will be back, just on a day where I can afford to spend more time here.

Yelp
Finally a delicious and authentic Indian restaurant in National Landing. We decided to try Kohinoor Dhaba after trying several other Indian restaurants without satisfaction. We found the portions to be standard, prices slightly elevated but worth it, and the taste was phenomenal. Great flavor and depth of spice. Would totally recommend.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Kohinoor Dhaba and all the dishes we got were tasty and hot! The takeout service was slow though. The Tikka Masala that I ordered was good but missing something, maybe the cream was too heavy. I also wish the serving size was a little larger for the price. I highly recommend Alu Paratha bread and would definitely consider trying some of their other breads another time. The bread was great for dipping into the Tikka Masala sauce.

Yelp
More items and their ratings! Mutter Paneer - 5* wow! This is so delicious! Loved the creamy texture and the bold flavor with the mellow paneer. The peas are also a great texture, not mushy at all. Chicken Kadhai - 5* fantastic flavour! I'd definitely get this again and would love to try the shrimp version sometime! Shrimp Biryani - 4* this one has a little bit of a kick to it which I enjoyed. If you like biryani you'll probably this. The only reason it doesn't get 5* from me is purely personal preference (I'm more of an Asian fried rice kinda person when it comes to rice dishes) Vegetable Samosa - 4* the sweeter brown sauces pairs very well. And I really liked the texture of the samosa shell. Paneer Kulcha - 3* good but nothing special. I'll stick with the garlic naan. Daal Makhani - 3* wasn't as big of a fan as I wanted to be. I've had really good Daal before but I think they were in creamier dishes. This was under the vegan section so I knew there wouldn't be cream. It doesn't really surprise me I didn't love it as I tend not to love just beans on their own and this was basically an Indian bean soup. Good to have a little next to a larger portion of your favourite main dish. Kari Pkora - 2.5-3* I liked the fritters but I did not like the sauce at all, it was rather sour.

Yelp
Big fan of this place. We got take out recently, and they were on time with making the food, and everything was delicious. I really like the lamb roganjosh - the lamb is so tender and the curry is very flavorful. Their naan is great. I'm a fan of their vegetable samosas as well. Will keep coming back to them!

Austin D.

Yelp
Had the naan bread and the chicken korma. Wasn't terrible but definitely lacking flavor and the chicken was tough. Rice was too firm as well.
google avatar

Mira S.

Yelp
Good food when at a nearby hotel. Reasonable prices. The chicken pakora was nicely seasoned but a bit tough. The chicken biryani was good, with a little heat but not too much, and not overly wet, with a decent number of chunks of chicken. The garlic naan was also good, not dripping with butter or oil, and evenly spread with minced garlic. Takeout was ready in 20-25 minutes.
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
My first meal here in DC. Food was good, the portion sizes are huge. Be careful when you order Naan. An order of two is a heaping plateful. No way I can eat all this. Thumbs up though if you are staying near Ronald Reagan Airport
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
If you want to dine in, head downstairs. The good: - Service was great. - the buttered naan was amazing - the gulab jamun was one of the best I'd ver had The bad: - served drinks by the can - the chicken was tough due to overcooking The neutral: - not the typical tikka masala I was used to, but it grew on me - close to the crystal city hotels but you had to cross a major street to get there Summary: Overall, I recommend, especially the gulab juman.

Yelp
This Indian restaurant is easy to review. However, the object of my comments (that is, the owners) may not find it easy to read. THE FOOD The food at Kohinoor Dhaba was good. Probably as good as most Indian food I have had before. The samosas were nicely crispy on the outside and the filling was luxurious and exotic. Plus we received them within minutes of ordering them. Our main dishes - chicken tikka masala and palak paneer - were good. Not great. But solid and good. Whoever cooked the rice did an outstanding job. The naan also was good. This restaurant was recommended to us by some folks directly from India. They said it was the most authentic Indian food they had eaten in the DC area. That might be true, I don't know because I'm not Indian. But now, after our dinner there, I notice that they didn't use words like "best" or "great." Maybe it's just coincidence, who knows. THE DINING ROOM This might be the worst dining room I have ever eaten in anywhere. It was in the basement and lit like a surgical suite in a hospital. The floor was dirty. The fabric roses were dusty and caked with previous diners' food. There were numerous water stains on the ceiling and walls. And our table was so close to the bathroom that we could smell the toilet bowl cookie throughout our entire meal. Not appetizing at all. In fact, we would have left the place if we didn't have to climb the stairs and walk right past the staff to get out of there. When I say the dining room was terrible, I don't think that adequately describes it but it's as close as I can get. If this restaurant does not CHANGE ITS DINING ROOM, it will never last long. The decor (such as it is) is simply not up to ANY standards at all. I would return to this place for the food if it weren't for the terrible dining room.
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
I had a nice dinner here with every good lamb tikka masala. The lamb was very tender. The rice was tasty. The naan was very good but a little drier than most. The sauce was delicious and there was plenty to eat and dip my naan. The service was quiet, simple and attentive. The dining room was empty, apparently a lot of their business is take out. There is nothing fancy about the dining room, it is very bare bones. The napkins were very thin and un-absorbent, one wipe of the mouth and you need another napkin.

Yelp
Needed a late-night bite and decided to stop by here a couple hours before closing time. There were a few others dining at the time but we were seated immediately. ATMOSPHERE: The area to pick up food is upstairs, but the dine-in area is basically in what feels like the basement of the restaurant. There were very few windows and a huge A/C unit butting into the room. FOOD: I ordered the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. The food quality was good. The tikka masala sauce was nothing out of the ordinary, and the chicken pieces were a bit dry. The garlic naan was very good, and I would recommend pairing this with any curry dish. SERVICE: Our server took our order and the food came out relatively quickly, but we were never checked-up on. Maybe this was because the dining area was on a separate floor. PRICE/VALUE: The portions of the tikka masala were reasonable for how much it cost ($13), and was enough food with the naan for one. The naan was also reasonable for price ($5). Overall if you are craving indian food this will definitely satisfy.

Yelp
This was my second visit, this time I used ChowNow app, I recommend for a seamless experience-easy to view menu and add to my order quickly. I walked over from my hotel and the food was ready. Absolutely delicious! Super fresh flavor, immaculate packaging in spill proof containers. I had the lamb roganjosh and garlic naan. Amazing flavor. Staff at the takeout level courteous and friendly. Please visit if you are in the area, this place cares about their product!!

Yelp
Food was AMAZING! And the service was so fast! She was also so polite and gave us great recommendations and terrific assistance in ordering! 100% recommend, I would take photos if we didn't devour it because it was so good.

Yelp
My partner and I were looking for a dinner meal and decided that Indian sounded like a good idea so we looked on yelp and found Kohinoor Dhaka and it was delicious! We ordered online and the food was ready super fast so we immediately left to pick up the food. The vegetable pakora was pretty good. The chicken tikka was absolutely delectable. I thought the chicken was going to be a bit dry but it wasn't at all! The palak paneer was also delicious and had a hint of a fresh flavor that I haven't tasted in other palak paneer dishes. We also got the goat biryani and that was also really good, very tender. We are so excited to have discovered this place in our area, we look forward to becoming regulars!

Parvathy K.

Yelp
We had dinner yesterday and it was really good. Authentic Indian punjabi food. The ambience and service was also great

Ben C.

Yelp
I flew in late on a Thursday night starving staying at the Residence Inn / Renaissance Hotel location and stumbled into this restaurant. I was actually looking for the Kabob place but glad I did! Food was pretty good given my lower expectations based on the frontage and look for the restaurant. Don't be put off...fast, tasty, good portion and well priced. I expect to be back in the DMV before end of year and I will definitely stop in again!

Maya R.

Yelp
The food was very fresh. The service was excellent. Had takeout from that place. Had the kadai chicken and okra. they also have great lunch specials. Walking distance from a bunch of hotels in the area. Hyatt, Marriott Renaissance etc
google avatar

Robin T.

Yelp
I wandered in here taking a lunch break from a conference at a nearby hotel. I'm so glad I did! I had the palak paneer lunch special with a side of mango pickle and it was amazing! I had to close my eyes and savor every bite! The naan was perfection!! I wanted to finish the entire tray, but I got full too fast!
google avatar

Emmanuel W.

Yelp
Good food, decent sized portions, definitely worth a drive out from DC. Seating is broken into two areas, one upstairs and a slightly larger space downstairs.. Regardless, ambiance is dull in both.
google avatar

Charis S.

Yelp
The butter chicken with the garlic naan and the samosas, as an appetizer, all of it was really good. Butter chicken, the sauce itself, tastes a lot like and reminds me of tomato basil soup. So smooth, rich, and savory. The chicken was tender and there were lots of big chunks. Seasoned perfectly! Now I see why Butter Chicken is going viral on TikTok, it's so good and honestly, can be very addicting. It's such a perfect comfort food. The staff was very nice and they weren't busy when we went, so the service was great, not rushed. Food came out hot and there was a lot of it too!
google avatar

Tonyia R.

Yelp
There is Indian & Thai places all Over the place in the Crystal city area. I have actually reviewed quite a few of them. But after a family member brought some butter chicken to our Christmas Eve party from this place I am sold. The butter chicken, the spinach and shrimp, the samosas, and even the basmati rice cooked in saffron was absolutely delicious. I had to come over here for myself to see what else they had to offer. I am a side of sauce kind of girl, and normally I would get a side of red curry but this time I chose to get a side of the tikka masala sauce and it has hit the spot. I even ventured out and get a lager this time.
google avatar

Ahmer H.

Yelp
Amazing food for a very reasonable price We were visiting DC and stayed in a nearby hotel and did not want to drive around to go eat out. I looked it up on yelp and realized it was literally down the street . I went walking and picked up the food that we devoured and enjoyed. Definitely a great memory to take back

Jacob j.

Yelp
I ordered this food then drove about an hour north into Maryland. It was amazing. The chicken biryani was perfect. Food was ready quick. I will be driving an hour to get this again.
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
Absolutely amazingly delicious. Anything you get is just so tasty. If you like spice, this is the place for you. It does not disappoint. On top of that, the customer service is fantastic. You can really tell the owners care about their customers. My only regret is not trying this place sooner. Don't make my mistake! Try it ASAP!
google avatar

P I.

Yelp
Good service and food is good based on American level spices. The place is clean and nice to eat
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
I just moved here, and really wanted to have some comfort food delivered. I saw Kohinoor Dhaba by chance, while out running a few errands. I ordered online and was pleased with the quick service. Most importantly, the food...just wow. I ordered chicken korma and garlic naan. It arrived hot, smelling like absolute heaven. The rice was perfection, the korma was divine and well...the garlic naan...I believe I have found the best place in Arlington ! If you love Indian food (who doesn't??) you will not be disappointed. My tummy and my soul are comforted.

Yelp
I ordered the food online first off, so this is a take out review. Amazing, simply amazing food. I think I have found my favorite indian restaurant in the DC area after a long 1-year search. I ordered: Chicken Pakora, Goat Biryani Special, Chicken Seekh Kabob, Onion Kulcha, Chicken Kulcha, Alu Paratha, Chicken Korma Special, Chicken Roganjosh Special, Chicken Tikka Masala Special, Mango Lassi, Lassi Sweet The first challenge was leaving it at my door bc I did a scheduled delivery and my flight home was delayed (Thanks American Airlines) and I was happy to see the food at the door. The serving sizes were suitable for the order, some are larger but where Kohinoor Dhaba wins is the favor. Some of the best all around asian cuisine I have had in the DMV. It is hard to find any negatives with this food. The pakora was done right and not overly oily. The seekh kabob had wonderful flavoring and texture. The lassi's were absolutely spot on to how my friends from India make them when I request them. Go here, you will be happy
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
New to Indian cuisine. I think my recent great experience at Amrit in Ocala ruined other Indian restaurants for me. Chose Kohinoor because it was walkable from my hotel. I ordered the same thing as my first dive into Indian food - Vegetable Samosa with Rogan Josh Lamb. Service was good and portions large, but after that it was downhill. Seating reminds me of an elementary school cafeteria. Vegetable Samosa wasn't crispy, filling bland. Lamb entree was better but waitress never asked for my spiciness preference. Way to hot for me. I would have preferred milder seasoning. Best part of this meal was the Naan. Will not return.

Derek O.

Yelp
Food, services, ambience was awesome!! A staple in this area and a walking distance from all the major hotels!!
google avatar

Zakia C.

Yelp
I went in and ordered the Vegetable Biryani and a Mango Lassi. It was my first time ever trying Mango Lassi and it was so good!! The vegetable Biryani was really good as well, but just a little too spicy for me because I'm a light weight when it comes to spice. I will just ask them to cut it down a bit next time. Still very tasty! The people there were very kind and my food was bought out quickly. 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Sharon H.

Yelp
Food was a bit too spicy, despite asking for something that was not spicy. The naan was decent. The place is set up more for take out, although the do offer table service. It is three stories and lacks clear signage to know for to navigate, but once you figure it out it was fine. There was a TV blaring music videos, which made it challenging to talk. There was also some confusion about the bill that we had to reconcile. The overall experience was fine, but there are definitely aspects that could be improved.

JP G.

Yelp
The restaurant failed to deliver items that are listed as part of each entree and refused to remedy it because they claim those portions of the entree were "complimentary." If it's listed on the menu as part of the entree then it cannot be considered complimentary. The item would not be ordered or priced at that level without all of the elements.

Jeff M.

Yelp
地道到暈低 服務好嘅 太忙了 可以忽略 極力推薦 個靚仔夥計好好招呼啊 老闆都出埋黎招呼.................................唔好讲嘢 please come。
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here. The vegetable samosa was probably the best of the order that I had. It was filled with lots of flavor and the sauce that comes with it I definitely recommend the sweet sauce. As for the chicken Tikka personally I have had better. I asked for medium spice but there was barely none. It was still good however I felt like it was missing something. Only complaint was that for it to be a to go order, no utensils nor napkins were provided
google avatar

Liane B.

Yelp
I ordered through Door Dash. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and was extremely disappointed. The chicken was dry and stringy. My vegetable pakora didn't taste fresh. I'll ever order from here again.

SJ B.

Yelp
Some of the WORST Indian food I've ever had (and I am from India.) The chicken vandulu had no flavor or heat whatsoever, even though I asked for it to be prepared extra spicy. It tasted like they mixed a can of tomato sauce with some garam masala and then tossed some dried out chicken chunks in it. A total abomination! Do NOT waste your money here; I've had freezer meals with more flavor.

M K.

Yelp
I was visiting Arlington for a conference and decided to order food from Kohinoor with Uber Eats. Even though the restaurant was very close to my hotel, the driver took a long time and delivered to a wrong hotel. When I called Uber Eats they had a horrible customer service (which I'll post a separate review on) and didn't want to help me. I called the restaurant and they personally delivered me the food without any extra charge. It obviously cost them extra for food and I truly appreciated their customer service. I tried to contact Uber Eats again next day to get the restaurant reimbursed for the extra food. They refused to take responsibility for it. Totally awful. Will never use a Uber again.
google avatar

Ed R.

Yelp
Don't let the Labyrinth of dining rooms confuse you these guys are the real deal. There are far fewer good foodie places near the hotel row by the airport these days, most have not made the turbulent times. These guys are awesome! There ingredients are fresh and spice to taste equals delicious results. The staff are the Owners!! They are working hard and I loved it, the heavy taxi and delivery vehicle traffic proves others love it too.

Sunil P.

Yelp
Good food and great service. Ordered delivery while traveling to DC.. would order again.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
The food here is good. However, they don't practice good business. They charge the same price for a meal via a delivery service app but do not include naan, vegetables and yogurt. Which is pretty standard. On their website for the same exact price and meal it comes with naan, vegetables, rice and yogurt. They are trying to charge more through the apps to even out the apps fees. This in turn falls on to the customers. I have ordered from them before and have always received rice, naan, & yogurt salad. What they told me over the phone is a complete lie and for this I will stop giving them my business. Again, the food here is good. If you don't mind paying more for the sides on top of delivery fees and surcharges go for it. However, if you do mind go to their website (granted they don't update it) you will see their Tandoori specials all come with the sides I just mentioned.
google avatar

Chelsea N.

Yelp
I got the mango lassi, garlic naan, and the butter chicken that came with rice. Surprised they have such a low rating. I thought the portion was decent and the food/ drink was tasty for its price. It's nearby the hotels so it's nice not having to walk far with the little cut through in between the parking lots.

Ananta S.

Yelp
I ordered doordash for shahi paneer and instead I got chicken This was really disappointing as a customer
google avatar

Edward R.

Yelp
I did take out service and the food quality and quantity was great! Customer service was prompt and very courteous.

Yelp
Absolutely superb Indian food. I ordered Indian take-out here on a whim, and absolutely did not regret my decision. In fact, I love this place so much that, when my car was recently in the shop, I walked over to pick up take-out just so I could have their food! The chicken korma is absolutely delicious in every possible way - I absolutely love it. Other side dishes I have since tried, such as the popadium and the gulab jamun, were also good. This is easily one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area, and I can't recommend it enough.
