"Mid bakeries don’t last for three quarters of a century, and this place is proof. Kohler’s recently moved to a new location, but the beloved spot is still churning out the same breakfast treats it has since 1949. There are no misses among the racks of raisin-flecked sticky buns, dense crumb cake, and rainbow-sprinkled cookies, but you absolutely cannot leave without at least one cream donut. Get the powdered-sugar-coated, icing-stuffed ball of fried dough—or preferably an entire bag, filled to the brim." - regan stephens, sydney mcelwee, candis mclean

Google
New location but still the same fantastic donuts and delicious pastries to eat. It’s a little further for us to go but well worth the time and mileage to get there. A must visit for those who haven’t been and a revisit for our crew every weekend. Keep up the amazing work and thanks for the love extra handles by the end of the summer.

Google
If you are on the fence about visiting this small shop, do yourself a favor and go. You will not regret it! Their cream filled donuts (what they’re known for) are some of the best I have ever had. What I wasn’t expecting, though, was amazing crumb, sticky buns, and cinnamon buns. The cinnamon cream is out of this world!! I could seriously eat a whole bowl of it Pro hack: order the cinnamon twists with a side of cream to dip in. You’ll thank me later

I visited their stand at the Colorado Springs farmers market in Old Colorado City this morning. Saw they had sourdough for sale and was excited since I’ve only been able to purchase it from one bakery in town. Buy the loaf, head home, just to realize I was scammed. It’s white bread. Either this bakery is blatantly lying about offering sour dough, or the person manning the stand has no clue what they are vendoring. I am so disappointed and out $7 best spent elsewhere. I’ll be buying my sourdough from the tried and true Provisions Bakery in downtown.

My family has been going to Kohlers since the 1960s but sadly a lot has changed under the new owners. The cream donuts are smaller, have less cream, and they have a weird aftertaste, like there's a different ingredient in the mix. The texture of the donuts is different too, not as soft and light as before. The prices are higher too! It's a shame to see how this Avalon tradition has changed for the worse.

Google
$3.25 for one small doughnut?? Seriously? $40 for a dozen? This place only survives in Avalon. Delicious but way overpriced. Loved this place forever but this feels like "everyone in Avalon is rich so let's charge a ridiculous price and see if they are stupid enough to keep buying."

Jack Kinsey

Google
We bought Kohlers Avalon NJ donuts for years. Fantastic! Under new owners everthing has changed. Our 20 donuts cost $65. Seriously expensive, but there is more! One of our jelly donuts had no jelly and the rest had very little jelly. The choc covered cake donuts were terrible cause the choc was so sticky and had no flavor. Lastly, the cream donuts had lots of cream (yeah) but the second of my creams had an off taste. So sadly we will never go back after 13 years of wonderful donuts. We are bummed.

David Hinkle

Google
Best cream filled donuts in the world - we buy dozens every week! Nothing like them anywhere else - Kohler’s is amazing!

Colleen Fleisher

Google
Best doughnuts in the world. Been eating them for 25 years now and they are still #1. Everything they make is good. Check out their Instagram whenever you are planning to go as they usually update with any random closings and they are mostly open during the summer season. I can’t wait for next year!

Andrew F.

Yelp
Great donuts. Friendly kids working the place. My favorite was the glaze. The line was long when I went but it moved pretty fast.

Scott J.

Yelp
Tasty eats an amazing service! Frequent patron and they consistently knock it out of the park!

Jeff D.

Yelp
If you like donuts and are in Avalon NJ you should to stop here! Here are the must have, cream filled, sticky buns, jelly filled. The only one I would not get again would be the Chocolate swirl bun, very dry and too much chocolate. You can order on line and save time. Just pick up on the racks outside.

Lou C.

Yelp
New owner, new building, but same great quality and selection of donuts, breads, and breakfast goodies. Staff is still friendly and efficient, and the new building is about the same size as the old, but slightly updated. Prices went up a little but not to the point of being unreasonable. The vanilla crème filled donut is still the star!

Captain S.

Yelp
Been going there for 40+ years, during the summers I get donuts at least three times a week, inflation definitely hit the price of the cream filled doughnuts.

John M.

Yelp
Kohler's Bakery is an iconic bakery in South Jersey and has been serving the Avalon, New Jersey community since 1949. For a business to be embraced by their community for so many years, they have to be doing something right. Kohler's Bakery creates a wonderful product that is worthy for all who are significantly happier after eating there. Add to that a friendly staff and a great overall ambiance to this bakery and you truly have a winning combination. The donuts here are definitely pretty stellar and something you should definitely try. All in all, I would definitely recommend here.

Richard B.

Yelp
Kohler's is a decades long institution in Avalon. Stylistically its baked goods will remind you of German bakeries in Philadelphia and South Jersey in the post WWII era. The ordering process is smooth with a staff member clip board in hand moving down the line asking for your order and writing it all down on a Post-it note. Study the menu while waiting about 15-20 minutes to enter the bakery. Cinnamon buns and donuts are musts here. Average prices $2 per item. Contrary to Yelp Kohler's is cash only. Worth the trip to Avalon and the wait in line. Owner has announced this is the last season. Go early and often.

Chip B.

Yelp
Bake goods are not the same after the ownership change and have been going downhill for the last number of years.

Carolyn F.

Yelp
Best sticky buns on the island! Dad's been getting them since he was a kid in the 1950's and they were the highlight of every summer vacation breakfast. The jelly donuts were also my favorite. Such a nostalgic place. So thrilled it will live on for many more generations! We are all hoping for the cashew buns to come back

Lisa E.

Yelp
Closed forever the beginning of September 2023. The best jelly donuts, amazing sticky buns, will genuinely be missed.

Debbie A.

Yelp
Great creme donuts! Many other delicious items as well! Only Wish they would remain in Avalon for years to come! Will be sad if they close after this season.

Marc I.

Yelp
My sister in law bought a bunch of pastries there and then later in the week went back again. Incredible variety and so delicious. The cream filled donuts are to die for, cinnamon twists were tasty and the cinnamon rolls were heaven. Don't walk, RUN to Kohler's.

Joanna L.

Yelp
I grew up coming to Avalon. My family became customers in 1949 when their doors opened -- Kohler's was always a staple at our house. In most recent years, the product quality has definitely changed... and not for the better. We've ordered here recently and on more than one occasion, the donuts were raw inside; specifically the cinnamon twists. On top of that, they don't willingly package the donuts in the wax bags like they used to. Instead, they're using paper and the donuts often stick to the paper or clump together. They're not cheap donuts and they're smaller than they used to be. It's disappointing in a town that's undergone so much change and increased in pretentiousness, that a classic staple like Kohler's has diminished in quality. I appreciate the reply of the business owner below, and I would never review a place that I haven't already (and my family) reached out to directly to remedy the above opportunities for improvement -- each time they have occurred. Like I said, customers since the doors opened. It's certainly not in my nature or intention to unnecessarily tarnish a reputation, but this platform is dedicated to honest reviews of businesses by consumers, to help other consumers make informed decisions, but also to help give constructive feedback to the business, after customer service in the past has not remedied. The intention of writing this review is to help the business understand what's been occurring and help to get back to being an icon that Avalon has known and loved for many decades.

Ashley A.

Yelp
best fresh donuts in town! The staff is also very nice! My favorites are the jelly and chocolate donuts.

Jeff N.

Yelp
not the same as the Kohlers at their previous location. prices are very high (2.95 for a single item. ). the crumb cake is dry, much different from the old Kohlers.

Caitlin J.

Yelp
Worth every bit of the wait on a summer weekend! Have been an Avalon resident and visitor for over 35 years. We've never strayed- the sticky buns and crumb buns are unlike any other! So excited to share the donut love with my two girls as they grow up going to the shore now!

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Waited in line 40 mins before opening and ended being first inside. Line wraps around the block by about 20 minutes before opening. Cream filled donuts and trolley buns were the best. Totally worth the wait/hype. Glad we don't live near it or I'd be there weekly and full of regret/happiness.

Adrienne A.

Yelp
Most delicious sticky buns on the planet! Gooey bits of happiness that my family has been enjoying for more than 40 years

Jeff H.

Yelp
Kohler's Bakery in Avalon is 70 years old this year. This is one of the Jersey Shore's favorite bakeries and many summer vacationers patronize here especially in the morning hours. To be honest, it is not at all my favorite shore bake shop and I have never found one item that I would rate at the very top of any pastries I ever tasted. But still - their sticky buns are quite tasty and their crumb buns (or crumb cake) as it is called here is crumbly enough. The cream filled doughnut I had had lots of the cream on the outside which I am not sure is their style or was a mistake. It was far from the best I have ever had. When I stopped in last week, service was uncharacteristically unsmiling and kinda "Whaddaya want?" My final verdict - if you are spending time in the summer cooling off in Avalon, Kohler's will nicely satisfy your sweet tooth. But with many fine options on the other islands, I wouldn't make a special trip for their baked goods.

Donna D.

Yelp
Not a huge donut person. But I can't resist a Kohler cream donut. It is divine! We always get them when we stay in Avalon. And they freeze beautifully!

Katie K.

Yelp
The absolute best donuts on the island....cakes too!!! The staff is also always amazing....there is usually a line but it moves fast!!! Plus you can email orders and just pick up!

Bumax L.

Yelp
Everything is delicious. They are always packed. Best bet is to place your order and pay than pick up the next day. You don't have to wait in line you can eat your baked goods on the walk home.

Caroline M.

Yelp
Best donuts I have ever had. You can't go wrong with this place and will always find something to enjoy! The service was one of the best in Avalon as well as the vibe workers couldn't have been nicer and it looked like and old fashion bakery which is what I live for! I have been a customer for years and plan to keep it that way!

Summer P.

Yelp
The best cream donuts you will find at the Jersey shore. Fresh, perfect ratio of cream to donut (this is where most cream donuts fall short), exceptional customer service. Buy extra. They're not huge donuts so you can eat 2-3 without flinching. It's everything you could ever want in a cream donut, and then they also sell sticky buns, etc. We drive from wildwood crest to get them, and it's worth every mile in gas!

Sean M.

Yelp
If you're in Avalon NJ, you have to stop into Kohler's Bakery. Literally every single thing I've had is amazing and you can tell everything is fresh and made by hand. The sticky buns, crumb buns and the cream filled donuts are my all time favorites. The first bite into one of those little cream donuts instantly takes me back to my childhood when my parents would get up early and bring back Kohler's donuts. Want to skip the line? Get your order in early via their preorder option. In and out!

Angela D.

Yelp
Kohler's Bakery has the absolutely best cream donuts and cinnamon buns. I have dreams about these donuts all winter long. The cream donuts ooze with not-too-sweet cream. I love biting into them and having the cream pop out of the top towards my nose. They are soooo yummy! And I have never had such delicious cinnamon buns. They are especially good heated up and slathered with butter.

Catie C.

Yelp
If you're in Avalon you MUST make a stop at Kohlers bakery. The cream donuts are the best breakfast/dessert I've ever had. Plus it is a family owned business with amazing ownership and staff! The line out the door is WELL worth the wait !!

Maia H.

Yelp
The price to taste ratio here is amazing. For just a buck, you can get a killer cream donut that'll send you into sugar heaven. On our second trip here, I opted for the raspberry filled donut and it was the perfect balance of sweet and doughy. Try a few things, then come back and get repeats of your favorites. We never experienced more than a few minutes of waiting, but I've heard there can get to be a pretty long line.

Damien K.

Yelp
I was introduced to Kohler's by my wife the first year I came down to the Avalon / Stone Harbor area. With 13 years of coming here annually on these trips, I have no question why people have been coming here for as long as they can remember. The donuts here are made fresh daily, and you can always expect a line first thing in the morning if you come when they open. My personal favorite is still the cream donuts, but there really isn't anything here that is bad. You can't beat their prices, and the staff is always friendly and hard at work to help everyone that is coming in for their tasty treats. If you are in the area, you can't go wrong Kohler's for a donut, or two, or three.

Gwendolyn P.

Yelp
Was so thrilled to discover this efficiently run, affordably priced and delicious bakery! We ordered three things and our total cost was $3. Maybe that is why the line was out the door. The line moved very quickly and we had a raspberry danish, a blueberry donut and a sticky bun. I have been dreaming about the raspberry danish ever since we left. We will be back for sure.

Jay J.

Yelp
Delicious Delicious Delicious! We had cream, cinnamon and powdered sugar donuts. Everything was awesome! Great treats awesome staff, must visit.

Heather T.

Yelp
The cream donuts are delightful. I have Kohlers withdrawal every winter until Spring when they open again. it is hard to find good bakeries but this one is worth the visit the next time you are in the Avalon Nj area.

Jessica S.

Yelp
The absolute best sticky buns!! The cream donuts are delicious as well. I can't go down the shore without stopping in. The staff is always very friendly and I love how they do giveaways on Instagram. They are closed during off season so don't hesitate getting your fix!

Siaolan A.

Yelp
This was my first summer trying the cream donuts and holy crap am i pissed i haven't tried these earlier. THE DONUTS ARE AMAZING. You can get different flavored donuts as well as a variety of other baked goods but the donuts are my favorite. You almost always have to wait in a long line, but they have a number system so it goes by at a decent pace. The donuts are only $1 a pop - pretty cheap considering everyone loves these things. Service is always great too, the staff always has a smile on their face and are ready to take your order. There is also outdoor seating. TIPS - go early and don't forget to take a number as you walk in. (More than 5 people walked in, passing the number thingy and wandering around the bakeshop while i was there; i had to tell each of them to go outside and grab a number or they would have been waiting a WHILE)

Naylor F.

Yelp
Love the cream puffs! If you're down at the shore get a couple and try some of the other jam filled and regular donuts

L T.

Yelp
Omg! These are to die for. Cream filled, jelly, cinnamon and my favorite the cinnamon sugar crullers. They are closed in Thursday's and at times there's a long line. Be sure to take a number when you walk in. $1/donut is priced just right. They are homemade deliciousness.

Linda J.

Yelp
The Kholers Cream Donut is a gift straight from the gods. If I would be able to I could eat 1 million of these donuts but 2 fills me for the whole entire day hehehe;) I am in love with this bakery and the cream donuts are just the best thing to ever be made, the warm bread and fluffy cream tickles the back of your throat and makes your taste buds leap for joy. My son Mikey almost ate himself to death we had to take him on a walk just because of how many he ate LOL! He then watched the coco melon and took a good nap, finally was able to get him to nap thanks to Kholers LOL!! Love love this place 100000000% recommend!

Raymond H.

Yelp
Best bakery at the shore. Cream filled doughnuts are awesome along with jelly filled!

Lyn W.

Yelp
Simply the best donuts you will ever taste. The cream donuts are by far the most amazing, melt in your mouth, slightly crunchy on the outside without being overly sweet. They are our go to donut in the summer and we dream about them in the winter when they close. You will not regret stopping by at Kohlers for a friendly hello and a simply amazing treat!

Jessica M.

Yelp
This review is based primarily on the sticky buns (w/ nuts and raisins). They are. the best. sticky buns. I've ever had. I guess I need to say I don't even really LIKE sticky buns that much, but I think that speaks to how frickin delicious these are! Texturally amazing, dense but not heavy and rich but not too much so. I think they might use a sour cream or a yogurt to give the batter a little zip. I've also sampled the cream and jelly donuts, which aren't really my thing, but my boyfriend and his Dad live and die by the cream donut. The cinnamon twists are good though. Picked up a few cookies which I am underwhelmed by. I have only been inside the bakery once, but my understanding is that they have a line and you wanna get there early. Enjoy the waves and buns.

Joe M.

Yelp
Absolutely must come here every summer to get our fix of the best donuts we've ever tasted. Family run and you can taste the love that goes into every bite! -Joey M

Christina C.

Yelp
Kohler's Bakery is amazing! The chocolate french crullers & cream donuts are my favorite!

Theresa K.

Yelp
If you want to find the best cream filled donuts, THIS is your place!!! Absolutely amazing! They have all kinds of other amazing treats as well but we are cream filled donut people! When they close at the end of the season we freeze a whole bunch!!! The staff is friendly and amazing as well!! Don't walk, RUN to Kohler's Bakery!!!!!

Kate B.

Yelp
I have been coming to this bakery since I was a little girl. By far the fluffiest most delicious donuts you will ever have! The buttercream filling is perfection! And the best part is they make custom cakes too!! Must must must visit!

Sophia Speaks N.

Yelp
People love this place but it's expensive and the pastries are small. There are always long lines so take that cue for what it's worth. Also they open at 8 am while other bakery/breakfast places open at 7. If you have little ones, you know the 8 o'clock or 830 is about the time they want to have their first snack! I found excellent pastries up in Stone Harbor also Avalon Coffee and other places in Avalon. So I haven't been here in years for the reasons I've just dated.

Beth D.

Yelp
The cream filled donuts are everything!!! Called the day before during these "Covid" times and they will have it ready for pickup between 8-10am the next day!

Susan M.

Yelp
Everyone knows the baked breakfast goods are amazing but did you know the cakes are equally amazing too! The butter cream frosting tasted similar to the inside of the cream donuts. The ocean themed Anniversary cake was perfect!

Joseph T.

Yelp
I just discovered Kohler's this summer and only recently due to a recommendation by a friend. Well, I am LOCKED IN!! It may literally be one of the BEST bakeries EVER......from the appearance of the products, the organization of the staff, the packaging of the goods, the AMAZING friendliness of the entire staff, and of course the DELICIOUSNESS of ANYthing you eat there!!! I am incredibly impressed! And a customer forever. Today is their last day open for 2020 and it was handled very well.. ...long lines that move fast and efficiently and a staff that never tires of being friendly and calm even in a huge rush. I ordered my absolute Favorite cream donuts with and without sugar and an assortment of trolley buns, cinnamon buns, crullers, crumbs, jelly donuts, among a few other treats. I could not wait to get home to start some munching on the goods! The sweets are so fresh always and beautifully proportioned to be just right for a serving. Nothing is overly sweet and everything is literally melt in your mouth delicious !! The best part of the cream donut is that the filling is perfectly textured and sweet but the donut itself is light, airy and not nearly as sweet....a PERFECT balance!! You just cannot go wrong here!! I will be among the 1st in line when they reopen in 2021!!!!

Emily B.

Yelp
An Avalon staple & must have! My family and I have been residing on the seven mile island for decades, yet we never fail to destroy a box of cream filled donuts. A shore tradition through generations and many more to come! Worth every penny
