"Just a stone’s throw from the Gothenburg Natural History Museum and Slottsskogen park, is this 22-seater Japanese restaurant comprising a counter and two high-level tables. It’s owned and run by John and Alven Chu, who offer an omakase experience encompassing appetisers, sashimi, nigiri, aburi nigiri, soup and dessert – as well as monthly special events featuring the likes of bluefin tuna or Wagyu beef. John carefully crafts the dishes in front of you, presenting them along with an explanation of their make-up, while Alven recommends Japanese drinks, sakes by the glass and even sake pairings." - Michelin Inspector

We had an amazing omakase experience at Koizen. Chef John is amazingly skilled and knowledgeable, and guides you through the experience, explaining the food and giving helpful hints on how best to enjoy it. It was very enjoyable to simply watch him prepare the fish, and the tastes of course were absolutely delicious. The dishes were varied, each with a distinct taste, and all super enjoyable. Expect to pay around 2,000kr per person - the omakase itself is 1,200kr, and we paid extra for the bluefin tuna courses which was on offer especially when we visited. We chose the wine pairing as well, which was nice but also a bit pricey at 850kr. There's also a sake pairing available. Service was super friendly and catered to every preference. The ambience is intimate and quiet, but not too quiet, some soft jazz plays in the background and it lends itself well to quiet conversation. There are 10 seats at the bar, and another 4 at separate tables. Interior decoration is minimalist but beautiful. It's an expensive meal as you might expect, suitable for a special treat only, but we left feeling it was thoroughly worth it for a terrific experience, ambience, and food. Hoping to visit again soon!

Koizen remains being one of my favourite restaurant in town: not only because of the quality of food, but also the creativity and execution. The sake paring is also excellent!

Koizen serves amazing Japanese food and John's passion is transferred onto your plate. The service is super friendly as well. They source their ingredients as delicately as they plate each dish. Would definitely go back here.

We had the opportunity to try this place during our travel to Sweden and it was amazing! The food was delicious and the whole experience was very entertaining. The Koizen team did a great job at taking care of everyone and the restaurant was very clean and cozy. We would highly recommend this place if you are in Gothenburg!

It is too easy to become a regular with Koizen. Koizen provides outstanding value with their food, service, and comfort. I can taste the care and sensibility behind the dishes they create, and the fish is always prepared meticulously. The recommended sake pairings are always harmonious with the courses. Reservations are required. Come with an open mind and you will appreciate all that is offered on the evening's menu. I wish that everyone could taste my pictures.

i would highly recommend going here. This is a five star save a small comment in the bottom of this review. Very well met by the chef and staff, friendly, welcoming, and responsive in their engagement. Food was excellent. Chef used ingredients of the season which was done in a way that elevated the culinary experience. He knew exactly when to introduce palett cleanser furthermore he kept a great tempo in serving the dishes. Chef makes the effort to know what one likes and dislikes so he was keen on adapting the dishes beforehand to meet ones preferences or needs. From the moment of booking he made contact and followed up to ensure service quality. The conversations weren't forced, I felt like chef and staff let the guest lead the dance, in a way you wouldn't think of, it was effortless and friendly, with personality and life experiences interspersed. Whether intentional or not, it was exactly to the degree it should've been. We had the sake menu, I will leave this to personal preference, i enjoy sake, and we had a great pairing and variety. staff tailored the menu for the person unfamiliar to it, great service and great sake. super friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff. i have only deducted one star from food, though it should be half a star, because one element of the dessert (a sponge cake like part) was a little too dry, i felt it should be lighter and fluffier. the rest of the dessert was great though.

A fantastic place for the omakase experience, chefs John and Teresa are wonderful hosts. Throughout the meal you can taste the passion for the art form through each piece presented. Each bite is wonderfully crafted and takes you through a journey of hot and cold, sweet and savoury. They perfectly blend the art of sushi with local fish and produce, everything was incredibly fresh. And a reasonable price for a high quality evening.
