The 38 Best Restaurants in Calgary, Canada | Eater

"It may be physically impossible to tire of Koji’s pork katsu, with its crisp golden coating and shattering crunch. Owner Eric Jung serves up the breaded cutlet in a variety of traditional ways: atop a hot soy dashi broth, in curry, smothered in miso gravy. The cheese katsu is like a magnified deep-fried mozzarella stick, only better. [$-$$]" - Dan Clapson

If your craving japanese katsu this place is a good location to get your japanese katsu fix, my friends and I came here around dinner time and we ordered four different dishes: cheese katsu set, cheese curry katsu, mixed katsudon and pork katsu nabe. The portion sizes were good and fair for the prices, everyone got pretty full from it. The food itself was crispy and flavorful, I highly recommend the katsu nabe but the cheese classic set is top tier as well. Just note that not all dishes come with salad and soup, if that's what your expecting. Although the menu is diverse the drink menu is pretty standard with only having water, soft drinks and tea which isn't a big deal personally but to some it may be. The location itself is easily accessible near west kerby station. The restaurant itself is pretty small yet cozy so just be aware there is limited seating during busy hours. There is a washroom. Service was good and really friendly and did make sure to check up on us if our food was good. Overall I do recommend this place.

best Katsu I had in Calgary. Little cozy restaurant. Friendly service. Small menu (Katsu only) but on point. Highly recommend their signature curry Katsu.

Always happy to support a small, local business, overall my experience at Koji Katsu was kind of mixed. The portion sizes are a definite highlight. They are very generous for the price, which makes it a good value. The yuzu sauce for the shrimp katsu was outstanding; it was a perfect, tangy complement that really elevated the dish. However, there were a few things that took away from the experience. The miso soup lacked flavor and tasted watered down; it could use more miso paste or seasoning in my opinion. I also felt the oil used for frying needed to be changed more often, as it gave the food a slightly off taste. I would caution against going on a hot day. It gets uncomfortably hot inside the restaurant, which made for a less than pleasant dining experience. Service was not bad, I wouldn’t say the server was particularly attentive, but when asking for water refills or the sauce for the cabbage salad they did get it fairly quickly. Overall, it's an okay spot, but there are definitely some improvements that could be made.

I had the signature Koji pork sirloin curry Katsu and absolutely loved it!!! The portion sizes are amazing! The perfect amount of crunch and flavour in every bite ☺️

I wanted to love this place so bad because I enjoy supporting local places, but when we visited last Friday we did not get good service. We arrived around 7pm, and got seated quickly but having only 6 tables the restaurant got filled up soon after. The food is no doubt high quality and tasty, and my fiancé and I enjoyed the Teriyaki Chicken Katsu and the Pork Katsu Nabe. However, these took way too long to come out (about an hour) and I’m pretty sure it was because they forgot about us and about our order as the tables that came after us got their meals well before we did. Which was hard to believe, because the place is so small. Then afterwards, we weren’t offered anything for the inconvenience. I would consider giving this place another try, as this could’ve been just an unlucky experience, but my expectations will be lower.

The quality of the food is commendable, with the curry sauce being particularly exceptional. The katsu is prepared excellently, featuring a moist interior and a crispy exterior. The establishment is relatively small, making it challenging to secure a seat during peak dining hours. The staff members exhibit a lack of friendliness, engaging in minimal conversation. There is no greeting upon entry, and they do not smile, do not make eye contact, this creating an atmosphere that suggests patrons are merely expected to eat and leave.

Saw the recommendation on Eater and it is definitely spot on! This food was amazing! We loved the depth of the curry flavor and the crunchy katsu chicken and pork you could tell were super high quality and prepared with expertise. We sampled a variety from the chicken, pork, cheese and shrimp - it was delicious. One of 2 places we ate during our short visit in Calgary - totally worth it.

This katsu restaurant is quite quaint and cozy, so space and seating are quite limited. The portions are huge so you may end up with leftovers. I had the classic pork sirloin katsu and it was really good. The meat was juicy and tender while the outside was crispy and crunchy. This place does close quite early versus other restaurants, so that is something to keep in mind. I'm getting hungry again writing this review and can't wait to visit again.
