Navigating Tradition and Tourism in Papua New Guinea

"Proves to be a larger version of the Tufi lodge we’ve left: simple bungalows, another prop-up bar, but much better food, from lobster to fish curries sweetened with local fruit. The view from the main terrace looks out toward the volcano at Rabaul, which cuts a brooding profile across the horseshoe bay."

Lovely resort. We stayed here while on business but it could easily be a holiday option too if you want to breakaway and enjoy some peace and quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful. Both pool and beach were so beautiful to swim in

Had to take a picture of this beautiful waitress at Kokopo Beach Bungalow. Her glowing beauty is matched with locally island jewellery. Yes! All naturale ❤️ 🏝 😍

This hotel is sloppy. Having confirmed and reconfirmed my airport pick up the day before arrival, the pick up never showed up. I was stranded at the airport. It was only because I asked an airport worker to phone the hotel did someone bother to show up 40 minutes later! The pick up driver had a card with my name and flight arrival but didnt show up on time. The hotel never apologized. Moreover, i booked a tour with the hotel and in the in-room booklet it clearly states the price is 275 kina per person. Yet on check out I realise that I was charged 375 kina. No explanation was given. Breakfast was also a sad affair as the free breakfast only allows you bread and some fruit. I also booked this hotel for its "private beach" but it is unclean and the water not swimmable. The security on the beach also told me to be careful of the locals and not to trust them.

The hotel is lovely, with big bungalow rooms with good AC and ceiling fans. The rooms are very comfortable. The shower is good, and there is enough space for all of your toiletries in the bathroom. However, the water in the bathroom is very hot! It is a bit difficult to control the temperature.||The hotel is quiet and located on the sea, and the bungalows have terraces - although it was too hot and buggy when we were there to enjoy the terrace! The reception is very helpful - and the restaurant and bar staff are friendly. ||The hotel is a "beach resort," but the beach is rather unwelcoming. There is broken glass on the beach, and when we were there, the water was not clear like at other points on the island. However, the location is very close to where dolphins come to feed - and an early morning boat ride out from the beach led to an amazing morning of watching dolphins play.||Breakfast was rather quirky. There is "some" breakfast included with the room, but you have to purchase other items - like eggs or coffee. One morning, the "included" breakfast had lovely fruit, scrambled eggs, and toast. The next morning, it was pretty much only sausages! This is something that could be improved.

The head chef of the restaurant is from India and the wife of the restaurant manager. We both enjoy Indian food and, in addition, my wife spent her formative years in Pune. So we have eaten Indian food in India UK and South Africa. On that basis we are happy to say that the Indian menu, constantly available at the Konopo Beach ranks with the best in the world for taste and value. Not to be missed.

Had a wonderful trip in Kokopo. The room was large and comfortable. Location was very convenient, walking distance to shops/banks. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Safe and secure with guards on the beach as well as parking lot. Restaurant was lovely and continental breakfast was great.

Nice place to stay if you’re visiting New Britain. The rooms are large and have nice verandahs. The food was pretty good but like most of PNG don’t be in a hurry. The staff was very nice. The beach is OK, stick by the pool. If you have a chance go swimming with the dolphins, it is a unique experience.

We stayed 4 nights at Kokopo Beach Bungalows and loved every minute. Our room was perfect, the food was very good and the staff very friendly and helpful. The location is convenient, just a few minutes walk to the supermarket and about 10 minutes walk to Kokopo markets. |During our visit we did the Mt Tavurvur volcano with Johnny and Maris and it was amazing. We continued after the volcano straight onto the full day Gazelle Peninsula tour where we visited the German club, barge tunnels, Bitapeka war cemetery, Kokopo museum and my favourite the underground hospital. The local guides at each place were great and we learned a lot about the history of the area. Thanks Johnny and Maris for a great day.|The following day we did the dolphin swim which was good fun before visiting the Duke of York Islands for a relaxed and very enjoyable day of swimming and snorkeling. |Our final day was a full day at Pigeon Island. This was the best snorkelling that we had done in 2 1/2 weeks in PNG . Lots of fish, coral, sharks, turtles and a couple of moray eels. Anton and Billy looked after us very well and it was a terrific way to end our PNG adventure. The sandwiches and fruit for lunch were yum. Special thanks to Simon and his family, Markesh, Johnny, Billy, Maris,Anton, Simon Jr, Peninah at reception for all her help and all the various resturant, house keeping, drivers and security. There is so much to do and see and Kokopo Beach Bungalows made it an amazing and stress free time. |Thank you everyone.
