Where to Eat Sushi Right Now in San Diego

"A bit off the beaten path, Kokomo is a quiet temple to the art of Japanese Kappo cuisine where the restaurant’s minimal decor puts the spotlight directly on the plates of fish. Authentic and Heartfelt Omakase Kokoro is a truly special place. Unlike modern omakase trends that focus on flashy presentations, the chef stays true to tradition, letting the natural flavors and textures shine. His ice-preserving techniques take the fish to the next level. What touched me the most was how he accommodated my request for no rice. Instead of just serving the fish as-is, he carefully adjusted each piece—sliced halibut, diced toro, seaweed-wrapped eel—showing incredible thoughtfulness and skill. Celebrating our second anniversary here made it even more meaningful. This was my boyfriend’s favorite spot during college, and coming back felt like a homecoming. The chef’s dedication is truly inspiring. Kokoro is more than just a meal—it’s an experience from the heart.

Google
Walked in here without a reservation and ordered the Omakase. I was surprised that the place wasn't packed as the Omakase was absolutely delicious. Every dish was well presented, and tasted amazing. There wasn't a single item that wasn't good. I highly recommend Kokoro if you're looking for an under the radar spot for some good sushi.

Google
We went to Kokoro on Valentine’s Day for their omakase and it was uh something. I thought the appetizers were ok and the fried food were cold. All the fish quality were exceptional with sushi and sashimi. However, what really took a hit for me was the scallops and lobster where both were very overcooked and the sauce almost tasted burnt. Also, something happened with the kitchen or something because other people stayed for 1.5 hours to 2 but we had super long waits between courses and had to stay for over 3 hours. Not sure what the issue was exactly but for one of them we had to wait over 30 minutes after we were done with a course. Would still come for non-omakase or busy day for the quality.

Google
Really cute and authentic Japanese restaurant. I have meant to take my wife over to get some decent and delicious sushi bowls. Overall, I enjoyed the whole experience. Our waitress and sushi chef were so friendly and attentive. but it is on a pricier side even for lunch menu. I also wish the sushi and eel can be fresher than other places I tried. Just me but I should probably try their dinner menu to really judge this place properly.

Google
Wonderful omakase, so authentic with top quality fish and priced reasonably. We're lucky to have such a place here.

Google
Truly authentic Japanese food. Felt like I was back in Japan. Beautifully prepared and lovingly served.

Google
Lovely hole in the wall omakase spot! Went with my parents to celebrate a birthday. Made day of reservations without difficulty. We had an early dinner and were the only ones there for omakase, so it felt like we had our own private chef. Service was attentive, food was delicious. Seafood chawanmushi was amazing. Definitely felt full and happy by the end of the meal! My parents hate crowds, so they loved how private it felt.

Google
I cannot believe this place doesn’t come up as the first result when searching “Sushi”. It should!!! This place is very unassuming from the outside. However, when you walk in you are transported to Japan. They gave the traditional chefs’ counter, traditional Japanese dinnerware, artwork, the whole atmosphere is excellent. Secondly, the food was very good. We had the Omakase which is $120 per person. Honestly, was completely worth it. This place is awesome and can wholeheartedly recommend.

Yelp
Excellent authentic Sushi restaurant. The location is not the best but the food here is exceptional. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and the staff are all friendly. Highly recommend to get the omakase sushi. I have been here many times and regular sushi is also good but omakase offer better type of fish. Regardless of what you order, all fish here are very fresh and flavorful.

Yelp
I met my friends here for dinner a couple of times lately. Both times I had assorted sushi 10 pcs and some a la carte items like miso eggplant and assorted tempura. The nigiri sushi rice has a stronger vinaigrette taste compared to other places, which I like and I think makes the sushi here tastes better. Sushi is good overall but the fish here is a bit dry and small. I prefer a little larger sushi pieces, both fish and rice. Jazz is nice but got a bit louder than we wanted at times for having quiet conversations. You know those high trumpet and saxophone tunes... The waitress was courteous and checked on us. This place is tacked away from the crowdedness of Convoy and has easy parking that is definitely a plus in the area. It's a nice place if you want an intimate setting for Japanese cuisine with the Chef's personal touch.

Yelp
We loved this place, everything was top tier and very authentic. It felt like we were in Japan! This rivals all other top sushi restaurants in San Diego

Yelp
This place is great! I was browsing some articles about the best omakase places in San Diego and this restaurant came up. I didn't go for their omakase but I went for their lunch specials and loved it! This restaurant is tucked away in a plaza. A very unassuming location. I arrived right at 11:30AM when they open for lunch. My friend and I were promptly greeted and sat. A sweet older woman took care of us through the experience. This is a very small restaurant so come early or make a dinner reservation. I ordered the sushi lunch and my friend got the sashimi lunch which came with miso soup. We were both still hungry so we ordered a spicy tuna roll to split. Everything was top quality and the portions were perfect. Can't wait to come back for their omakase experience some day!

Yelp
Overall, this restaurant was great but not amazing. I came here for lunch for their chirashi bowl and it was not bad. The server was very kind and accommodating. Ambiance was intimate and quite, which I enjoyed. I wish the restaurant served hotter, more vinegary and sweet sushi rice. The rice had no distinct flavor or any value that stood out. It was authentic Japanese flavors but I would honestly rather spend the money else where for not so authentic sushi for more bang for the bucks. I may give it one more try for dinner but would be very considerate on what I get. While I appreciate the boutique, cute, and intimate setting of the restaurant, I wish the food were better!

Yelp
Overall experience was decent. The place is extremely small. Food is great but I am not sure if it's actually that great to match the price charged. Staff was friendly but the kitchen probably gets busy. I feel the food was serviced very slow though it wasn't a big deal since we were hanging out while waiting for food. I don't intend to go back there. I personally like the sushi place in liberty station more Given the fact that its about the same size but the cost was lower there and food was great there as well. No complain to the food here. I think it's great but will not go back or take friends there based off overall experience.

Maysam S.

Yelp
Honestly, this is the best sushi in all of San Diego. Truly a master class Chef. Very authentic Japanese food and never disappointed. After visiting Japan, I can verify that this is by far the best Japanese Food in SD.

Yelp
After a long day working - the team wanted some real sushi and Kokoro delivered. We called 20 min before arrival and they were able to seat us so I would recommend calling beforehand since it's a smaller shop but so worth going there. We enjoyed squid tempura, chirashi bowls and assorted nigiri. The negitoro was also so good and we LOVED the panna cotta (not pictured because it was inhaled) All items met our expectation. The fish was super fresh, the service was great and my only regret is we didn't do omakase (next time for sure)! This was seriously a last minute find that is an absolute gem. I loved that it was so traditional as we were not looking for dragon rolls or anything of that sort. The sake menu was smaller but a bunch of gems. We went with one of my favs since it add available and priced so reasonably! I honestly can't praise this place enough. Pricing is so reasonable for what you get and I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area in the future!!

Yelp
Awesome service and amazing fish! We did the omakase and loved every bite. They were really busy on a Saturday night but still delivered top notch service and the chef made sure to check how we liked our food multiple times throughout the meal (even though he was the only chef for the entire restaurant!). Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
I think the cheapest omakase I have ever been $120-$125. I guess going to more expensive ones have set the bar high for me when it come to omakase. Overall, the sushi and everything tasted good but you don't get the excellent omakase experience. Not too much interaction and definitely fish quality is on the average range. I think it's a good place to try if you are new to omakase and you want cheaper options but yet it's not really that cheap lol. I had the main course and got only two sushi which was disappointing and sashimi platter was small. I think their prices should be little bit cheaper for the amount of food they have for the omakase. Bottom line, not impressed.

Yelp
Food - excellent traditional style sushi, fresh, fun to eat and interesting. Not a rolls place, this is a place for people who love fresh fish and high quality. Service- fast and unpretentious. Unlike other high end sushi places, there is no snobbery, it's not a scene. Ambience- Cozy, small, clean and quiet enough to have a conversation. Intimate for sure. If you're into high end sushi but don't want to wait months for a reservation- go to Kokoro. They're also open for lunch. The food is the most important part of any restaurant (my opinion) and their food is amazing.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. It's a very small restaurant so it's intimate. Biggest downside is that it's really expensive.

Yelp
Food: 10/5 Service and Setting: 4/5 Value: 3.5/5 Kokoro restaurant has truly stolen my kokoro (heart) with the honesty and quality of their food. Located in an unassuming, honesty run down plaza, Kokoro's entrance leaves very little expectation. Parking is easy. Their window treatments make them look like they are closed, but don't let that fool you. The interior is clean, Japanese inspired, with no gimmicks. Natural wood is the theme and makes the small restaurant feel cozy. Service is very kind. Though slow at times, the servers are all very attentive and detailed. You don't need a reservation for lunch but I would definitely make one for dinner, particularly on the weekend. The magic is in the food, especially their dinner. Chef Akio Ishito is truly a gem and I am so honored to have been able to try and enjoy his food (he is alive, I realize that this sounds like he isn't oops). "Omakase" Sushi Course: 100/5 I won't mince my work. PHENOMENAL. SPECTACULAR. AMAZING. Chef Akio Ishito definitely has the sushi rizz as he gingerly formed the rice and expertly sliced his fish. Bangers on top of bangers on top of bangers, I was basically walking from side to side. All of the pieces of sushi had a unique charm, ample amounts of wasabi underneath, and years of experience ingrained into them. Cuttlefish, toro, uni, toro, this insane shiso hand roll, anago, are just a few standouts. The chef would explain to us what he was serving each time and we would be given hot dishes in between (these were also bangers). Before they serve dessert, the servers will ask if you want to order anything else to make sure sweets do not come out prematurely. The ending with panna cotta and tea was a great way to round out the meal. For the first time, I truly want to come back and support the food and art at this restaurant and I hope that all of you do as well. Mackerel Battera: 5/5 A form of sushi not often served, Battera is a pressed sushi with more densely packed rice with marinated radish on top. Imagine like a Spam musubi. This dish in particular tasted "special" and I knew that Kokoro was doing something right. It tastes like sushi but something is different, come try it! Lunch Unagi Bowl: 4/5 The unagi bowl comes with eel, egg, inure, shrimp, and Kanpyo rice. All of the ingredients are very fresh and expertly prepared. We all have had the experience of ordering an unagi bowl and having it literally just be a piece of fish over rice. I felt that this was lovingly and thoughtfully crafted. The only downside was that the portion is a bit small and pricey, but the quality is definitely there. The miso soup the meal comes with is also a bit elevated and has a "gourmet" taste for a lack of better words. Sushi Lunch: 4.5/5 What Kokoro does better than any other sushi restaurant I have eaten at is their rice. Perfectly seasoned, perfected formed, and perfectly cooked, it truly is a masterclass in its preparation and is the ultimate vehicle for toppings. All of the sushi was phenomenal in its quality, freshens, and preparation. Even the American friendly cooked shrimp was prepared with respect and was a step above other sushi restaurants' preparations. A bit plain Jane, but perfect for a simple lunch. Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura: 2.5/5 A bit shocking, but the tempura was not that good. A bit too oily and not very crispy, a definite low point. Better than all you can eat, but definitely not worth the price they are charging. Good thing they keep things traditional and not add tempura into their rolls. Housemade Panna Cotta: 4.5/5 Rich, creamy, and tastes almost exactly like White Rabbit candy. This Panna Cotta is pretty sweet, not as sweet as most American desserts, but much sweeter than most Asian ones. With a warm cup of tea, the perfect dessert.

Yelp
There are two omakases and they are very close in price. One has more nigiri (about 8) and less sashimi; we chose the nigiri heavy version for $105. It was a variety of hot and raw dishes, but I would've preferred a few more pieces of sushi or sashimi. I could've done without the root vegetables and the first dish that included beans and anchovies. Those two dishes just did not seem special. I did enjoy the soup with a big piece of mochi. And, the fish was super fresh and I was a big fan of the uni and toro (I guess not a surprise that I enjoyed the big ticket items the best). I thought the panna cotta desert was a nice touch; it was super creamy and more unique than the commonly served last dish of store bought ice cream. I think this is a place worth visiting, whether for omakase or a la carte.

Yelp
So happy we found this spot! They welcomed us in, even though we were arriving (unknowingly at the time) 15 minutes before last call. The food was really fresh and flavorful- simple but delicious with great fish! They're not serving rolls at dinner right now, but their sushi bowl options are more than a good alternative. It was a quiet and small restaurant that made it cozy and fun to watch the sushi chef slice up our fish for us. We plan to come back to do the tasting menu.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I came here last year for our first date. And the other day came back one year later as a full circle reunion. And we could not recommend this place more. The vibe is intimate and cozy, traits that separates the restaurant from other competitors. The food is spectacular. The service is so kind and welcoming. We will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Quaint family owned restaurant. Excellent food and service - a hidden gem. Highly recommend set menu.

Yelp
2nd time here. The non sushi items were items I've never had before and greatly enjoyed. Absolutely would come back and recommend. Service, ease of reservations, pacing, quality of fish, ambiance (v chill), sushi chef interaction were all very good.
google avatar

Samuel P.

Yelp
Solid spot for lunch but slow. I went in to check it out for lunch before committing to a omakase for dinner. It was just the one chef that was serving the whole restaurant for lunch so it took 30+ min for me to get my chirashi bowl. Once I finally got the food, I found it to be good but not amazing. In other areas of the country this might be excellent but when SD has so many good sushi options, I don't think you need to go out of your way to check out Kokoro. I probably won't be checking out their omakase until I've worked through the other sushi joints.
google avatar

Yelp
An excellent example of a small business run very well. Have eaten the entire menu over the past couple years, each item was among the best I've had. Perfectly prepared, very fresh ingredients. The layout is simple, as is the decor. Not pretentious or particularly fancy, but still a nice dining experience and the ambiance makes for a nice quiet, relaxing experience. Their lunch menu is not inexpensive, but is a real value. The dinner menu is likewise competitively priced. The sushi and sashimi and prepared expertly right in front of you (if sitting at the sushi bar) and the wait staff is extremely polite and helpful. Never had a complaint and we go there often. Ample parking in the shopping center, quiet neighborhood.

Yelp
My friend and I sat down at the bar and enjoyed an evening of wine and Omakase. Kokoro is a very small restaurant tucked away in a plaza in Serra Mesa. You probably would typically pass this place up because it's not screaming to come inside and eat, but it was a lovely evening in which we left the menu up to the sushi chef. There are other options on the menu if you don't want to do Omakase or sit at the bar. I'd give this place a try to support the local community and check out what all they have to offer.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
A small great authentic Japanese restaurant don't expect any fancy rolls here definitely expect to drop $100-$200 but get some fresh sashimi in my neighborhood. Very bring your credit card.

Isabelle Y.

Yelp
A hidden sushi gem in San Diego -- Kokoro is an absolute must visit! The fish is fresh and curated carefully with a large portion size for the Omakase course. The price is super reasonable and you can tell the head sushi chef takes pride in his food. Really enjoyed the clean simple ambiance of the restaurant and is a great place for a date or celebratory meal. The service was swift and polite, we felt constantly taken care of. We were also gifted a ponzu sauce made by the head chef which was extremely thoughtful and sweet!

Yelp
The beat keep secret in town The food is exquisite authentic n served with love this is the best sushi I've had in years truly a gem..

Yelp
What an amazing restaurant!my boyfriend made a reservation for my birthday & it was so amazing we couldn't stop talking about it. We decided to go a second time the very next day. We didn't have a reservation but we got there shortly after they opened & they were more than happy to accommodate us. Our waitress was the sweetest & even remembered us from the day before. I would 100% recommend if you like raw fish or the omakase. The vibe can be slightly confusing, with the strip mall... but DO NOT be discouraged. It is the cutest place inside with a smaller authentic vibe to give you the true experience.
google avatar

Kera P.

Yelp
Have you seen a Sushi restaurant without the display of fish? I know why it is so at this restaurant. The fish pieces were still half frozen and when I bit into them, they were rubbery, dried out and fishy. Mind you, we paid $115.00 per person for Omakase. Not only that, the sushi chef cut a small piece of the fish and proceeded to turn aground and eat it! I have NO idea why there are 5 star reviews. Also, Chawan muchi was rock hard and cold, the soup or the broth was flavorless, the service was poor and the absolute WORST sushi I've ever had in my life! Absolute waste of money. Stay away from this place!
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
The omakase was delicious! So many courses and the fish were high quality. The chef and servers were kind and the restaurant is cute inside. We also were gifted ponzu sauce! Will come back!
google avatar

Starlight F.

Yelp
Chirashi Great little place. Quality of food is pretty good. Price of chirashi was a little high compared to other Japanese restaurant given the types and quantity of sashimi in there.
google avatar

Swan L.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible! Who would have thought this little place in the Crunch Fitness and CVS plaza could serve up such high quality and delicious dishes! I love that it's tucked away in Serra Mesa and had a very chill atmosphere. A large tent with heat lamps is set up for outdoor dining. Since this is the first sushi dining experience since COVID hit, we went to town. Sadly they were out of the beef tataki, but our substitute choice of kamo-wasa (sliced duck with wasabi) ended up being my favorite bite of the night. We were also lucky to snag the last hamachi kama (yellowtail cheek), which is something I always order when it's on the menu. The meat is just so tender! Every dish came out with a nice flow to the meal and I was blown away by the flavors. Pair that with house hot sake and we were satisfied. Next time, I want to try the omakase
google avatar

Mengyun Z.

Yelp
We had the $95 Omakase course and it is delicious!!! The fish are very fresh and the Uni is super sweet!! We had 9-course for our whole Omakase experience, and we enjoyed all these different ways of cooking delicious food. Our waitress is also very nice and helped us refill our green tea 5 times without asking. Excellent experience for a great price!

Yelp
Kokoro restaurant is definitely one of those whole-in-the-wall places! You will be surprised when you walk in to see an authentically decorated Japanese restaurant here. We didn't have a reservation for a Friday evening, but we were lucky to get a table. Many other customers had to be turned away because we were full later in the evening. I highly recommend making a dinner reservation, especially on busy weekends. We started out the evening with Fried tofu which was great. It was beautifully plated in a large bowl. The sauce was very good, but it can use a little bit more salt for my taste. It's very authentic. I had their sushi special which comes with 10 pieces of sushi. The quality of fish was good. I love the selections. Each sushi piece was meaty with large piece of fish and small amount of rice. I enjoyed this combo. We also tried the Spicy tuna roll. It was delicious but not very special. I would recommend getting spicy tuna roll somewhere else. Overall, a cute Japanese restaurant in Serra Mesa area. Authentic setting and sushi place. It's pricer than a lot of Japanese places. I may come back to try their omakase menu which I read it's great. I probably will get typical sushi or sushi rolls at other places.

Anya L.

Yelp
So thankful our little neighborhood of Serra Mesa has this gem! We've been here twice and both times have been beyond happy with the quality of service and food. As a smaller shop, the staff and chef are very accommodating and check in often to make sure you're enjoying your meal. Absolutely recommend doing the omakase for dinner, or coming in for lunch for the sushi plate or Chirashi!
google avatar

Janet L.

Yelp
We came for omakase and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was. You can taste how fresh the fish is and the dishes are flavored to bring out the natural taste of the seafood. Even though each dish was small, it was extremely filling. I liked how there was a variety of different things- it wasn't just all sashimi and nigiri. There was also soup, steamed salmon with soba noodles, veal, and burdock root tempura as well. Homemade panna cotta finished off the courses perfectly. It might be the best omakase I've tried in San Diego!
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
Amazing. My wife and I were lucky to come in on a slow Monday night before close. We got hot sake and ordered nigiri from their paper menu. The nigiri was very fresh and delicious. You can't go wrong here. Price was a bit on the higher side, but can be forgiven due to the recent inflation (and not to mention excellent quality). The whole team was very professional and polite. The restaurant was very clean and authentic. Really there's nothing bad I can say about the experience. Go here. You'll enjoy it!
google avatar

Fong L.

Yelp
It was a quiet and peaceful dining experience returning to Kokomo. The staff including the chef so pleasant and professional. Now that I'm familiar with the menu, I find I can skip the omakase and order from menu. I found the chef sashimi special is very reasonable for $60. He selected high quality fish and my goodness the uni portions were generous.
google avatar

Lei'ana I.

Yelp
Hidden Gem in Serra Mesa! My fiancé and I wanted sushi but want to try a spot we've never been too. We found Kokoro and were able to be seated without a reservation. Perfect service, authentic sushi bar and fast and friendly staff! Ordered the beef tataki & fried oysters for appetizers. Both were very delicious but received only 2 oysters even though the menu said it comes with 3. Got the chefs special sashimi, salmon nigiri, toro nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, wild yellowtail nigiri (not pictured). EVERYTHING was amazing, fresh and tasty! The toro nigiri is a MUST!!
google avatar

Vannie L.

Yelp
Really awesome hole in the wall, hometown Sushi restaurant. You can tell that this place is a no frills place, but the food is amazing. The chef is super sweet and this place deserves to be in your rotation of sushi places. I had the $95 Omakase. It came with a sashimi platter, 5 other dishes and 1 sushi patter to end the meal. I was disappointed that the meal ended with only 3 nigiris on the sushi platter because the Sushi rice was DELICIOUS!!! you could order more nigiri after the Omakase meal was complete but we decided not too. Kind of regretting it because again, the sushi rice was amazing.
google avatar

Es L.

Yelp
We had a great time here tonight. The restaurant staffs and the sushi chef were friendly and the omakase dinner course portion was generous and super delicious. :)
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
Authentic ambience + menu, nice staff (albeit clearly new), and incredible sashimi. My only detractor is the price point. While I'm used to good fish costing a bit, the portions were on the smaller end compared to other local restaurants and we had to eat a second meal at home afterwards. 3/5 price relative to portion: OK, I get that good sashimi is going to cost you, but $38 for 3 slices of salmon, 3 hamachi, 3 toro, 3 tiny squid, and 3 tiny octopus is a bit much. The Wagamama bowl was 3/4 rice and 1/4 fish. Most of it tasted incredible (except the toro and octopus), but I was barely content after the meal. Walked out thinking about what I had left to eat at home. 4/5 service: We came at 845pm on a Friday night and it was relatively quiet. Staff was attentive, but our waitress clearly didn't know the menu and it was hard to ask for recommendations. We'd ask questions and she'd have to head back to the chef, rinse and repeat. Sashimi recommendations: - salmon - hamachi - squid (did not know squid could hit like this!)

Yelp
Kokoro in Serra Mesa is a top notch, traditional sushi restaurant in San Diego. My girlfriend and I were able to get a reservation pretty quickly. We opted to have the omakase and we were not disappointed. The fishes were super fresh and we both liked how they prepared every dish. The fish was the star but they added their own touch to each dish that made it special. Located in a strip mall with a CVS, we really weren't sure what we were in for but we loved it. Definitely a hidden gem in San Diego!
google avatar

Kayla G.

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem. Amazing food and great services as well. Super fresh and authentic!

Christine C.

Yelp
I don't know why there are such high ratings. I had $115.00 OmKase and it was not impressive. The fish they took out from behind the counter not visible by the customers were very small and they were still half frozen or very dry. Underwhelmed from the beginning to the dessert. Going to the bathroom through the kitchen was odd but it's not their fault, rather a design flaw. I have 2 stars for the service but zero star for the omakase food and experience.

Jenny P.

Yelp
I've had a sushi and rolls at Kokoro, I love how authentic taste it was. The food was delicious and the service was great.

Jennie C.

Yelp
I would not come back. We came here based on the reviews and found the place extremely high for the quantity and quality of what you would expect. The lunch menu is limited in choices and range from $17 for a basic roll to $27 for a lunch portion (bit size pieces) of sashimi.
google avatar

Jerry Y.

Yelp
I don't know why this place has such high reviews. My wife and I went there today. The waiter got our tempura order wrong. The sushi was mediocre at best. They were also short on staff so they couldn't make a single roll. All of the nigiri were overpriced. We ordered 6 sets of 2 nigiri and it cost $90 total with appetizer and dessert. If people think $90 Omakase with this quality of food is good, then you have not lived. Try Sushi by Scratch. $140 and the quality is 10x this place. Definitely not coming back here.

Yelp
This incredible restaurant has the reputation of being the best sushi in San Diego. I actually think it's the best sushi in California. Executive Chef "Taisho" Akio Ishito is a master. A master chef. He has his hand in every aspect of this restaurant. From the freshest fish from all over the world, to the jazz that's playing, to the Italian desserts that he makes himself. This is not just an experience at a restaurant but rather the intersection of delicious, improvisational Jazz and brilliant artistry. And I'm not exaggerating. The freshest most inventive and authentic Japanese style sushi you may ever find. Thank you chef we will be back again and again.

Yelp
Incredible Omakasa from a chef traditionally trained in every aspect. For those reviews that mention price, it was worth every penny, and very economical when compared to many cities. The layout of the sushi bar and the chef's station are beautifully simple, allowing you to watch Chef "Taisho" delicately work his craft. And the service was impeccable. I made the trip from Orange County and I can't wait to go away. And as a matter of etiquette, don't put anything he serves you in soy sauce, its gross.

Yelp
what a hidden gem in serra mesa! who knew? - really enjoyed our dinner here. fyi, they do omakase is around $80. we did not do that, and just ordered a decent amount of things, beer and house sake which was on point. I can't wait to come back again, def. if you are considering coming to Kokoro, call ahead, make a reservation - they do have patio and heaters - just better to have a reservation / vs. just showing up - service / plates / setting - all five stars - the setting is relatively quiet / intimate perfect for date night. list of plates we ordered: Kamo-wasa - duck shishito peppers HAMACHI KAMA shrimp and vegetable tempura Nori-ten: ( fried seaweed ) assorted sushi chirashi bowl miso soups would recommend coming earlier to avoid the dinner crowd - thank you Kokoro chefs and staff! can't wait to come back !!

Yelp
I really didn't want to write a review because I want this place all to myself. This place, hands down, is the most authentic nigiri/sashimi in San Diego. Amazing!! Best yellowtail I've ever had.

Yelp
Fabulous sushi tucked in a strip mall in Serra Mesa. There's a bright, clean, and minimalistic aesthetic to the interior, plus friendly service and easy parking. We love going there for their lunch sets, which are fresh and reasonably affordable for the quality. My friends and I typically opt for the chirashi bowl and udon noodle set. All the fish was fantastic. The udon is a great compliment for the fish and sushi rice featured in the chriashi. It's meals like this I truly find myself slowing down to enjoy each bite - truly enjoying the flavor and textures. Even the subtle bitterness from the sushi rice. Super pleased with the experience.
