How José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen Is Feeding Migrants at the Border | Eater Austin

"I noted that World Central Kitchen partnered with regular McAllen restaurant Koko’s to help prep and serve food for the thousands of migrants in Del Rio, contributing to the organization’s meal-distribution efforts during the crisis." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
5/9/25 came here because my sis loves this place. So I came to check it out. The food is good but it's not like other places it seems less, but don't get me wrong the food is good. Service is great the waiter was very attentive. The environment was good too, even though it was packed. My parents had a chile relleno and a meat skillet of some sort I had a botana.

John T.

Google
We had a group of 11 and they were ready to pull tables together for us. Service was great and the food very good. The prices were reasonable and we all had a great time.

Becky L.

Google
Place was so dead when we walked in we got the ugliest stares ever... the food was all bland and my husband's burger meat was hard when we brought it up to them, he said do u just want the meat switched... like whattt??!! Then he brings another burger and same thing, the meat was sooo hard and had no flavor at all so we just asked for the ticket paid and left and our server kept waiting around for his tip which mind you, we always leave a tip depending on the service we got and since ge was extremely disrespectful I told my husband not to leave anything and when we got up he nods his head as in a no motion I said yea no never again, nasty food and terrible service too... what a waste of time and money!!

Rock R.

Google
Service was excellent. Jorge was our server and he was very attentive and friendly. We ordered the beef botana for one, and my wife had the beef fajita enchiladas. My fajitas were super tender and full of flavor. We could've really shared it as it was alot. I really enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed the fajitas enchiladas and said she would ordered these again as they were very good. The place was packed when we got there and waited about 15 minutes for a table but everyone was real attentive and friendly. Overall, we really enjoyed it and will be coming back again.

Google
food was fresh, flavorful, and packaged well. Everything traveled perfectly and tasted amazing at home. Will definitely order again! Amazing service

Google
First, we were a large table of patrons but nachos came out with a lot of unrelated cheese, and then the fajitas were kind of chewy and not very good tonight. Then when we get the ticket to pay, we noticed that each item we ordered had an extra amount on it. For example $5 item on the menu was now $5.20 on the ticket, and the $44 item was now $45.76. And all other items all were different from the menu and then a 20% tip was added to every ticket for the table. And we had to ask for more water, tea etc. Was not pleased at all tonight with Koko's.

Google
Unfortunately, our dining experience was negatively impacted by the service we received from our waiter, Juan Manuel (JM). He consistently responded to our questions with impatience and a dismissive attitude, which came across as rude and unprofessional. Simple questions about drinks, payment, and policies were met with short, discourteous responses, making us feel rushed and unwelcome. basic courtesy and clear communication are expected. This experience significantly detracted from our visit.

Google
This was my first time going to this place. The menu has something for everyone. We had a very large party. They provided two servers. It took a while to take our orders. Food came in hot and fast. This food was delicious. The atmosphere was nice. I recommend this place for individuals or groups.

Yelp
This is a nice place where you can be sure you get the real thing with a wonderful flavor .

Yelp
Impeccable customer service and food! The staff in this restaurant has good rapport with us and makes conversations and the situation lively. The food is delicious and the portions are (very) generous. The botana plate for 4 really mean it would make more than 4 people extremely full. We couldn't finish it all so we brought half of it home. He gave us extra sauce and more variety of it for our chips too. 10/10 would come back again!

Yelp
My favorite thing to order are the enchiladas, and the service is always great. Perfect for any occasion

Yelp
Same as el pato. If u don't go during busy time you get reheated aweful food and reheated tortillas. But if you go when real busy food is great. So be careful and choose the busy times.

Kaylie L.

Yelp
Food was outstanding! My overall service was terrific and my waitress was very engaging, enthusiastic, and attentive. The ambiance and feeling on this place just felt like home. Warm and comfortable.

Yelp
The very first time I purchased to go a caldo de res it was a lot of broth and a few vegetables. I had left already and just figured poor quality due to oversight by employee. I decided to try Koko's again. You know, give them another chance. This time it was the opposite: I went for take out again. Caldo de Res-this time NO BROTH!!! Koko's need to be more CONSISTENT.

Yelp
All right atmosphere, service was fine so that brings us to the food. It was just not that good. I ordered Beef Fajitas Toreadas, which is beef fajitas but with jalapenos instead of bell peppers. So it's a bit spicer that regular fajitas. It's not entree I order regularly at other restaurants. Since this was our first visit I had to give it a try. I was disappointed. The beef was flank steak which is passable but thus wasn't thinly sliced against the grain to make it more easily eaten. It was thick as my thumb in some pieces plus it wasn't well seasoned. The onions and jalapenos weren't cooked thru enough. Generally they are a little charred. These weren't even close. The best items on my meal were the rice and pinto beans. The chips were tough. The salsa was decent. We also ordered a Kokos Queso appetizer which was bland melted cheese with some plain hamburger, tomato and a hee jalapeño pieces thrown in. We spiced it up by adding some of the salsa to make it palatable. Our bill totaled $65 before tip for two entrees, an apple and one iced tea which is a little steep for this area and considering the quality of the food. It's a bit of a drive so I doubt we'll come back.

Yelp
One of our favorite places to have Mexican food in McAllen. The front staff is not always super peppy, but the rest of the staff has always been great!
google avatar

Stephen J.

Yelp
Good, Mexican food! I love the nachos and the cheese enchiladas are really good. It's a great place if you have a party.

Sylvia G.

Yelp
Great food good service. I would recommend everyone to come here for lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Carlos B.

Yelp
Good panchos and service isn't bad but could be better. Fajitas are tender and items on menu aren't bad. Not chain "Mexican " restaurant and definitely not Costa Mesa crap
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
WOW. This place was AMAZING!! The chipotle enchiladas were sooo good! Great portions. The Flan IS OUT OF THIS WORLD. Best Flan I have ever had in my life. Service was great! We will be returning!!!!

Michael M.

Yelp
Had a birthday party with Dinner. The service was the best and prompt. We had Five Botanas ,they were very tender and great flavor. With twenty five eating we still had lots of leftovers. Can't say enough about the taste and SERVICE!

Nels N.

Yelp
Went with a large group (10+). The wait staff was fast and efficient on get us our food. Quic refresh of our chips and constantly refreshing our drinks. Ambiance was great. Food was good too.
google avatar

Joey R.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice frozen margarita, enchiladas and a botana. The waiters were friendly and the food hit the right spots.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Amazing lunch today. Thank you so much to the staff and owner for an amazing meal. We enjoyed the enchiladas with house hot sauce. Not too Spicy. Just right.
google avatar

Diana W.

Yelp
Dinner is delicious but I'm writing about my breakfast/brunch experience. Meh. It was a slow ordering process and when we got our tacos everything was BLAND! My parents (who hate salt) loved it but my husband and I were missing flavor.
google avatar

Javier M.

Yelp
This is a good Mexican restaurant but I will say this: Fajitas were 4 stars. -- not as good as taco palenque Rice is 5 stars-- better than taco palenque ; my son in law could disagree on this but I'll just keep him as an inlaw Beans 5 stars-- no one can mess up beans ; if they do -- they should pick another type of restaurant like a sandwich place. Ambience is nice and restaurant is clean The waiters are 5 stars ;very helpful Now the ceviche - you need to repeat this to yourself "I" will not order this. It was horrible -- the shrimp was tough the cocktail tasted like I can not think of the word let me see ----catsup oh yes ketchup! The avocado slices need to be presentable they had some blackness to them I had to cut some of it myself I did such a good job that my son in law paid the order for me. Therefore this hits 4 stars Remember no ceviche

Yelp
We've ordered their curbside twice in the last few months-including the panchos, enchiladas suizas, and a botana for one. We loved it all. Order came with chips and salsa too. Salsa is good with a spicy kick and chips were thin & crispy. Service has been friendly. Excited to have found a good place for Mexican so close the our home.

Dora Jean S.

Yelp
Enchiladas are the best!!! The service is ALWAYS ON POINT. ambiance is great. Beautiful Mexican decor. Fajitas are also some of the best textured. Corn tortillas are fresh.

Yelp
Koko's catering is phenomenal. My employer hired them to serve us 3 meals a day for 3 days on our worksite. High quality and variety every meal. They brought a trailer with a grilled attached and cooked on site. Every meal was awesome. Even the breakfast was a build your own omelet experience. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
We head down to the Valley every year for a white wing hunt and every year we get a botana to feed the crew. We always have a Dos-a-Rita while we wait to get the food. Every time the food and drinks are great.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Came in from out of town and was not disappointed! reminded me of San Antonio's "Pappasitos" and service was great! Left pleased over all.
google avatar

Tim Z.

Yelp
Amazing Fajitas that are second to none. The one huge disappointment is the Queso Dip and anything that had cheese on it. Two dipped chips and the bowl turned into clumpy rubber. The enchiladas were also like rubber rolled tortillas. The Fajitas were amazing as always and saved the day. Stay away from the cheese but enjoy the fajitas and soups. Two stars because of the server. We should him the Queso dip and he just shrugged his shoulders like --not my problem

Brandon L.

Yelp
Koko's was recommended to us recently, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered a few combination plates and tacos for lunch. We all left full and happy! The food was hot and fresh with great flavor! Certainly one of our favorite Mexican places so far and will be a go to for us from now on. It's a must try if you have not been!
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
I was not as impressed with Koko's as other Yelpers. To me, it was a Mexican restaurant, like any other. I had Carne Guisada which comes with tortillas. The tortillas are made in the restaurant (as far as I could tell). Everything was good, but nothing struck me as outstanding. The interior is pretty funky. I especially liked a room off to the side of the bar with blown glass hanging from the ceiling. My waiter was attentive and it seemed like they were ready for a crowd as there were more waiters than necessary for the customers that were there.
google avatar

Lizzy H.

Yelp
I ordered a caldo talapeno for a massive hangover, my partner gets home with my soup. NO avocado in my soup it was a salty soggy mess nothing here is cheap and nothing here in the past has disappointed me like this. I expected a lot more for our money. Smh

Yelp
I've been dining at Koko's since it first opened. I love this restaurant, and would give it 5-stars if not for the price increase. $15+ for a plate of fajitas? A little over-priced in my opinion. Other than that, this is an excellent restaurant with excellent food. It's your typical Mexican fare with a few special additions. I personally love their fried fish platter, and their beef enchiladas. The flautas are good, as well. The staff is attentive and the bar doles out drinks quickly (a plus in my book). Their cantina area in the back is adorable and perfect if you want a more private, lounge-style cocktail. I love the lights they hang along the ceiling and the main dining room is spacious, so you never feel cramped when it's busy. I had my high school graduation party at Koko's Uptown and they were very accommodating with my requests. We rented the entire party section of the restaurant that is visible as you walk in. Overall, a fantastic experience made special by the Koko's team. Highly recommend, it's a must go for casual dining in McAllen.

Yelp
I usually don't write reviews but I need to share my life experience on the best trio enchiladas plate I ever had in my life. If I could give it 10 stars out of 5 I would, but it won't let me. The refried beans are to die for. Yes the beans. Each bite I took of the beans I shook my head in disbelief of how good it was. Oh they also have great customer service and everything else.
google avatar

Yelp
Easily the best Mexican restaurant in the RGV! Love this place and the environment! Great service, great food, and great drinks! Their catering service is also outstanding. They always go above and beyond for their customers which is why I will always choose Koko's for my events!
google avatar

Kelley M.

Yelp
As a visitor to McAllen, I was first introduced to Koko's as an ordered in lunch for work. I told the person ordering to get me the best thing on the menu and I was given the fajitas tacos and they were absolutely amazing. I went back for a second time the next week with some friends and had the chance to look over the menu on my own and ordered something different (wish I could remember the name!) and it was even better than my first meal. My only complaint is the slow service, but it was definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Wendy S.

Yelp
Exceptional service, tasty food and fun atmosphere; good variety on the menu too!
google avatar

Kristin H.

Yelp
Had gotten a recommendation to come to Kokos and were not disappointed! Amazing food friendly staff and mariachi to boot!!!

C C.

Yelp
Had their catering and loved their friendly service and consistently delicious food for a few days in a row. Loved the Omelette station setup to feed many people. Extremely efficient on every meal order. The omelette station setup one morning alone is something to be experienced.

Yelp
Koko's is one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants in McAllen. The food is quite delicious and the ambiance is colorful yet soothing! However, the past 2 times that I have been here, I've been massively disappointed with their customer service. The very last time I went, we waited an hour for our food, and then waited another 20 minutes to get silverware to eat our food with! I'd recommend going on weekday evenings, and getting a nice big bowl of Caldo Talepeno. Yum yum!
google avatar

Donna D.

Yelp
Ate there a few weeks ago while in McAllen on business. Don't bother. The food was very average and I had to send my margarita back---the first time I've ever done that! Costa Mesa in McAllen rocks! Go there instead!
google avatar

Ekaterina A.

Yelp
We LOVE the bar area. It's dark, it's intimate, the bartenders are great! However, there's an equivalent of a seagull from "the little mermaid" trying to serenade the crowd at a deafening 150 decibels. Seriously, do you need an amplifier in a 20'by15' room? Any time we have walked in through the door and we heard this guy we turned around and left. It is ridiculous how loud and obnoxious he is. So we do lunch there only. The food is awesome though.

Ed B.

Yelp
Favorite spot for Tex mex food. Great CAB fajitas, botanas, and enchiladas. Staff are friendly and helpful and the restaurant and food quality is top notch. Always looks and feels cleaner than most other places.
google avatar

Jerod O.

Yelp
Prior to eating here, the idea of refried beans was an afterthought, a side-dish. Something we don't recall when sharing our food experiences with friends and family. That has changed now. Koko's has changed me. The best refried beans ever. Also, the trio-enchilada special is on-point too. So this is two reviews in one. The beans get a 5 out of 5 and the trio-enchiladas plate gets a separate 5 out of 5.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Love their botana and it is soooo much food! The order for two can feed a family of four easily.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Can't believe this place hasn't been claimed by the business or any yelpers! I'd like to say it proves its suckiness, but this place is always embarrassingly packed. I don't know how else to put it but...the food just SUCKS. It's not even good tex-mex. How does the Valley put up with this sacrilege? My theory is that the Winter Texans keep it in business. Just don't go here. If you're in the area, try Blue Onion or Russo's Pizza.

Carlos A.

Yelp
The caldo de pollo was amazing. It is huge. The chicken was a good amount. Everything tasted fresh. The tortillas were hot and fresh.
google avatar

Suzy L.

Yelp
Food was good, we ordered tacos and the soup everyone talked about! Ive had better soup, but the tacos were really good! And the tortillas were fresh!
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
This place is great -- all the food is fantastic, and the waiters were very helpful in recommendations. Never having been here, I hosted a surprise birthday party for a co-worker here (for 10 people) and they were very accommodating with last minute changes to time and guest numbers. The margaritas were huge, and the waiter got them all right (which I think was confusing since it was a variety of "frozen, no salt; on the rocks, salt; on the rocks, no salt" etc.) and to the right people. Great service and wonderful food -- I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Eva F.

Yelp
Best service! Best Mexican food!! Shout out to my favorite waiter Arturo! Jorge and Albert, you all have worked so hard to make it what it is, congratulations!!!!

Carrie S.

Yelp
I use to love Koko's! they use to have great prices too. Now prices are high! Take out is horrible and dine in is sub par. Wait staff is still great though
google avatar

Dora S.

Yelp
Food is great. Shrimp cocktail is Huge. I was surprised to find wheat crackers. Looked on website for hours of operation. Said they were open till 11:00pm. Got there at 8:30 pm. We were told the kitchen closed at 9:00 pm. So we quickly ordered and quickly got our food. Always good food I just wish we had more time.
google avatar

Anju T.

Yelp
The atmosphere was nice and the waiter was friendly. The food took awhile to come out. It was petty good. I had the fish tacos. If I go again I would try something different. There portion was really big and over all the meal was good. I recommend going by and giving the place a try.
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
I enjoyed the evening from beginning to end. Friends and I met for dinner and the drinks were excellent and the chips kept coming. The meals we ordered were the best of tasted in a long while. They were flavorful and I was not disappointed. I would suggest everyone give Koko's a try.
