Austin German Beer Garden Koko’s Bavarian Closes for Summer | Eater Austin

"An East Austin German beer garden, brewery, and restaurant co-founded in late 2021 by Jesse Herman, Konstantin Prinz von Bayern (who goes by Koko), Charles Attal, Tim Love, and Nick Swerdfeger, this spot served sausages, schnitzels and German-style beers from the 4715 East Fifth Street space. It announced a summer closure starting June 5 to address maintenance, upgrade its alfresco areas, and complete other improvements while the on-site brewery continues producing beer. The operation has also expanded into venue locations such as the Moody Center, Acrisure Arena, and CFG Bank Arena, with additional expansions planned later in the year." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
We have been coming here for years and we absolutely love it. Amazing fresh, high grade sushi. Try the fatty tuna special. Chef David is an absolute legend at his craft and always makes us feel like family. If you’re looking for a little hole in the wall, hidden gem. THIS IS YOUR PLACE!

Google
Mid food and bad service. The lady was mean and rushed us out of there. We were not even there for an hour. Also, my friend was refused a kid’s meal just because she looks slightly older than 9. The oyakodon was mid. The sushi was mid. The chicken noodles were below mid. Too salty. Also the oyakodon had barely any chicken and egg. Would not recommend and will be back. Ever. For several reasons…

Google
Came in last week with my family absolutely love their food here if you’re looking for a great hole in the wall place to eat some phenomenal sushi. This is the place to go. Great pricing great atmosphere amazing service would highly recommend this place if you love seafood and sushi.

Google
This is one of my favorite places outside the perimeter. As someone who lives in the city I regularly drive to Koko just to feel that authentic mom and pop feeling. They always remember me and are the sweetest chief duo for miles. I genuinely feel you can taste the love in all the food they make. Authentic Don boxes and delicate care in their sushi are highlights of the menu. I highly recommend the Unagi Don and Agedashi Tofu!

Kevin A.

Google
Delicious tasting sushi. The sushi is reasonably priced and the hot tea is good. The fish on the sushi is fresh. The rice is well cooked. I recommend coming here if you are craving some good sushi.

Google
Love Koko's. This restaurent I'd a small family owned sushi restaurent. They are very nice people and very friendly. It was my wife's and my friends first time trying sushi. And they loved it. The experience was great and sushi tasted great. We also did saki bombs and it was cool.

Google
Just moved to John's Creek last week and this was the 1st place I ate. Fish taste fresh and the service is top notch, very nice people.

Google
Phenomenal food and a very large menu lead to an original dining experience. The decorum was lacking for what I would expect at the price point.

Yelp
Sushi was outstanding, was not expecting that. Service was over the top with recommendations and chef was very friendly. Doesnt come across as a classy place, but the sushi is better than most. I would bring out of towners here and even dates, based on food and service.

Yelp
Hubby and I LOVE sushi and we saw this place on the drive home and thought we would give it a try since it had a 4.6 rating on Google. I love noodles so we chose the yaki beef and I'm used to the noodles being thinner but they made it udon instead and I was pleasantly surprised because I love a good udon stir fry! It was delicious as far a the sushi goes we ordered the "hot dog" roll, but didn't see any description that it was deep fried so that was a bit disappointed because he does not like his rolls fried, on top of the crazy amount of tempura crunch drizzled on top so it wasn't our favorite. The eel and spicy Philly roll we're good at least. Our server was very nice but the main thing that bothered me was when she brought my card back with the receipts it showed that the tip was added and nothing was mentioned. I had to ask her after and I just think it's a courtesy to let the guest know if gratuity is added or it feels sketchy. Overall it was still a good experience, and we'll be back for the yaki again!

Yelp
favorite place ever!! i come every week!! get the JD roll it's amazing. The fried rice is top tier. The staff is AMAZING!! also best ginger dressing i've ever had.

Yelp
We went there a few weeks ago. The food and ambiance were just amazing. My husband had the Dragon roll with teriyaki I had the Rush Hour. The miso soup and salad were just the taste of what was to come.

Yelp
Koko's is a small sushi restaurant, and a pleasure to visit. The menu has a good selection of plates of which some are themed with humoristic names. The venue provides with absolutely fantastic and high-quality japanese flavors. The incredients are fresh, and the friendly chefs know the proper techniques; yet the price tag won't be extraordinarily high. This place is definitely worth visiting again.

Yelp
Great sushi I highly recommend this restaurant to any sushi lover High quality and very fresh sea food

Yelp
Delicious tasting sushi. The sushi is reasonably priced and the hot tea is good. The fish on the sushi is fresh. The rice is well cooked. I recommend coming here if you are craving some good sushi.

Yelp
Koko's has always been one of our sushi spots as it has fresh fish and a really large selection of rolls. We always order both sashimi and rolls. The sashimi is always fresh and we often try different rolls that are almost always on point. (Sometimes trying new rolls I may not be a fan of a certain ingredient) I would have given them five stars but I believe like many other restaurants. They are shorthanded, and the food took a little bit longer last time than I had hoped. To their defense, it was a Friday night. All in all, it was a great experience.

Yelp
We love you guys. Always great food, always great service. We are made to feel like family and we will be back. We 100% support your wonderful business. Sara and zack xoxo

Yelp
I love salmon teriyaki and they have one of the best ones in the JC area. The salmon isn't dry and they cook it well enough to let the salmon absorb the right amount of teriyaki sauce so it's not too heavy. I wish I had gotten the name of my server - She was so nice and always made sure to check up on us! Plus she was very patient and helpful when we took awhile to order. I had the spider roll last time and it was delicious! The prices are similar to other sushi restaurants but I think their sushi is more fresh than other places.
google avatar

Yelp
Went there based on the passionate reviews. The staff (owners?) were sweet and lovely, but the sushi was just OK. My search for the best sushi continues.

Yelp
My young daughter told me about this place. She and her pre-teen friends went there to eat a few times and she told me she fell in love with sushi! I asked if they tipped the servers and she looked at me in pure confusion, so apologies to whoever has served my daughter and her friends . Anywho, we tried a few rolls, some pork gyoza, and chicken fried rice, and it was very fresh and delicious. The price wasn't bad either! Today, I didn't realize they opened at 4:30 and called to place an order for pickup before 4pm. We were headed for a long drive and didn't have time to wait until 4:30. I was going to cancel the order because it was my mistake that I didn't note the time, but the lovely lady on the phone spoke to someone and they accommodated me. When I arrived 10 minutes later they were all so sweet, greeted me with smiles, and our hungry family was able to grab a quick snack before we hit the road. Thanks again for going above and beyond for us!

Yelp
Wow I can't believe this is in my general vicinity and I haven't been here before. They have been here 13 years. Where have I been? We had the ST coconut, double spice tuna, JD roll, jiggy roll, edamame, yellowtail appetizer, chicken fried rice. It was so good!!! My favorite was the ST coconut. My husbands was the double spice tuna. We WILL be back!

Yelp
Alot of food and not much during lunch hours. Definitely give this place a try if you want some sushi in alpharetta. The location is kind of hidden, but sushi is delicious. Not so sure about dinner but I'm sure it's just as good as lunch. Give it a go and try it out. I enjoyed the calm environment.

Yelp
So, I just don't normally hand out 5 star ratings, but this little place has become one of the most underrated places to get sushi that I have gone to. It is truly and consistently amazing to the point where I eat 3-4 meals a week there. The other thing to note here is that when I first started going here, I had a lot of friends who didn't like it. Apparently something changed right about that time because now every single friend I have, many who don't even like Sushi, love this place. Some of the additional recommendations I have are: Golden Bridge Roll -- Spicy tuna with Unagi and Avocado -- hands down my favorite roll. Korean Charishi -- I don't know if I spelled that right and I don't care. This is one of those ones you just have to try to love. Yaki noodles w/seafood -- OMG just...OMG. For lunch, any of the boxes are a great deal, but the Sushi/Sashimi boat takes the prize.

Yelp
Now this is the mac-daddy of Sushi rolls. Fresh, and always fun at the Sushi bar. You absolutely have to try some of their special rolls. Not the fastest place on the planet but, did you really come to a Sushi bar in a hurry?
google avatar

Sherry H.

Yelp
My husband's favorite place for sushi and I actually get cravings for their veggie tempura. The service is always great and they have a large menu of a variety of food to choose from. I am actually allergic to shellfish and usually leery of Asian restaurants because of the risk of cross-contamination. I always tell the server of my allergy and they know immediately that means to avoid touching my food after handling shellfish or putting my food where there is shrimp or crab. I have never had a reaction after eating here.

Sara J.

Yelp
I love this place. Great for take out or dine in. Small restaurant, but the service is great and the sushi rolls are terrific. I recommend the Tuna Hana.

Yelp
Had a take out last night and was disappointed. Simple chicken and shrimp Fried Rice was over cooked and dry. Not the fresh tasting meal that we are use to getting when eating at KOKO's. The portion was also lunch size...... new chef?? Sushi rolls were good!
google avatar

Kostie S.

Yelp
Best Sushi and service I have ever had in my life. The people are genuine and lovely. Not a grain of rice was left after I was done with it! Will definitely be back. Sugoi! Arigato!

Yelp
New to Alpharetta and have lived most of my life in the city. I was concerned about finding a good everyday place for Sushi and one that delivered. This is the place! The owner prepared sushi at the sushi bar. The servers are warm, polite and attentive. Please try the special Salmon appetizer. It takes a bit longer which they explain upfront but it's worth the few extra minutes ;-)
google avatar

Yelp
Koko's is a really great whole in the wall restaurant. They have large portions of sushi that are mostly 8 piece. My wife and i had two regular roles, two specialty roles, and two soups for about $40. They also gave me sky more traditional Japanese dishes. The device was great! Very sweet lady! We live nearby so we plan to go back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Great lunch with my grown son today. We both had sushi lunch special. California roll and 5 pieces of sushi, chefs choice. Nice fresh tuna, salmon and white fish. Lunch also included miso soup , small salad and selection of deep fried veggies. Great service great affordable lunch. We will be back!
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
Exceeded any expectations. I will definitely be coming back. Waitress was attentive and delightful. The food presentation was simple and elegant. The food itself was flavorful and had a good sized portion.
google avatar

Vivian N.

Yelp
Food was fresh, great and beautifully presented. They have good appetizer menu and huge selection for maki rolls. Their sushi and maki rolls were not overly drizzled in sauce. Service was attentive and fast. Comfortable experience.

Yelp
Homely little restaurant serving home cooked Japanese cuisine. I took 2 stars way because: Service was rushed - my udon was taken away before I finished. Check was brought before we we finished (without being asked). When we asked to get dessert, was told nothing was available which felt like the sever did not want to take the bill back and adjust it. Taste of food - while the food tasted home cooked, the taste was not exceptional. We ordered fried fish, seafood udon, sashimi and chicken teriyaki.

Ann A.

Yelp
We have been going to Koko's for many years. Over time we have ordered almost every thing on the menu. EVERYTHING is delicious! Sushi chef David seems to put his heart into his work and it shows. We love the atmosphere as well. It is very welcoming. If you like Sushi, then you should definitely try this place!

Yelp
Ordered take out from here based on all the great reviews and I was sadly disappointed. Relocating from New York City, I know what real sushi is and this is not it....well, let me clarify. My fiance and I ordered 3 rolls, and 2 miso soups to go. We both love Vegetarian rolls, so we ordered a Cucumber asparagus roll, cucumber avocado roll, and an asparagus avocado roll. After we ordered we were told 25-30 minutes and we could pick it up....really? For 3 veggie rolls (these are not even cooked dishes!). My fiance comes back home with one small little sushi tray and a small Styrofoam container of soup. There are only 16 roll slices in here, which leads me to believe that one is missing. Surely for the $15 we paid they must have forgot ton to put the 3rd roll in. I call Koko's back up and explain the situation. The take out girl is obviously not understanding me and hands the phone off to an American man with a thick southern accent. He promptly tells me that a 3rd roll was never ordered. Hmm, okay...well it was, your phone girl didn't write it down. After much dilly dallying on this guys part he finally told me that if I wanted a 3rd roll, I could order it and come back in and pay for it. I am shocked that I wasn't already charged for this 3rd roll in question because $15 for 2 veggie rolls and a tiny container of miso soup is robbery. I could have spent $6 at Kroger for the food I got. He tells me that the rolls were each $5 (outrageous for nonfish rolls), and the soup was $3.50, also outrageous for the small portion of soup that was given. I tell him that I won't be doing business with him again and he seems fine with it. I would NOT recommend this place because their customer service is horrible and they are grossly overcharging and RUDE! Do not waste your time with this garbage.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood sushi spot. The chef is very crafty and makes some cool (and delicious) sushi. The decor inside is pretty cool as well. The sushi is always fresh and I have yet to have something I didn't like. The best part of this place is the lunch specials. I usually go for the Sashimi special (which comes with soup/salad/and fried veggie tempura) as well as a HUGE amount of Sashimi with a spicy tuna roll. I always have enough left for dinner or a snack later in the day. I would be content eating this meal everyday. I'm almost positive they lace the spicy tuna roll with crack, it looks bland but the flavors are outstanding! I have yet to try to bento boxes, which look fantastic as well because I am so in love with the sashimi I feel it would be cheating. The lunch specials really make this place 5 star.

Yelp
After this place, I am no longer a sushi virgin. I must say, that my first time was awesome and having it here, made it even better. Everything that I had tasted so good and so very fresh. The people who worked there are incredibly friendly. I can't wait to go back and try more new stuff!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sushi in Alpharetta! They take the time to really please there customers. Perfect dinner date spot.

Yelp
Love this place. The food is delicious. You can't go wrong with anything. The service is always excellent.

Scott W.

Yelp
Great sushi. Introduced to it by my 16 year old son. Probably one of his best recommendations ever
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
Ate lunch there today with wife and son. Had here different items off the lunch menu, so didn't dig into the sushi side of thing much aside from the California rolls as part of the lunches. That said the chicken katsu was on point, the tempura was nice and light and the salmi was cooked nicely. Old school vibe inside, but comfortable. Will definitely be back for lunch and will give the sushi bar a try at some point.
google avatar

Felix C.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this while looking for Sushi Mania one day for lunch. It turns out to be a nice little gem of a restaurant. I had a bento box for lunch and the fish was pretty good and the service was very good. It was fairly deserted when I was here.
google avatar

Chloe M.

Yelp
I've given this place 4 chances to change my mind. But I'm not a glutton for punishment and 4 visits is plenty. The final straw came when, an order of lunch Sashimi Plate came half-frozen and bloody. Disgusting. Previous visits were worse: dishwater miso soup, bottled teriyaki sauce on meats, nigiris with a pound of undercooked rice, sushi made with old fish, tempura fried in rancid oil... and many other mishaps. I tried. I did. But you are finally off my list.

Kenneth R.

Yelp
Great find for quality sushi in Alpharetta / Johns Creek. Fresh, and so many choices! David is one of the head sushi chefs and he is very personable and friendly!
google avatar

Lee O.

Yelp
Love this little sushi Restaurant, friendly little staff with kind hearts and warm smiles. Family run business with Key Hours!!! Highly recommend if you're in Johns Creek and need good sushi!! When you walk in you will always be greeted with a courteous smile and hello!

Han Ah C.

Yelp
Chef David can make ur favorite even they r not on the menu. Good sushi also good teriyaki!!
google avatar

Leah E.

Yelp
Love me some Koko's sushi!!! Always good quality food and so tasty. Sous chef Daniel is wonderful, if you go their often he gets to know you and will make you new samples to try. I don't know if I can even pick a favorite because I live so many things there. But if I had to choose just one thing the Yellow tail fish jaw is killer.
google avatar

Jessica Ashley R.

Yelp
We absolutely LOVE Koko's for dinner! While it is a small space, it is perfect for an intimate date night with personal service. Everything is fresh and the selection on their menu is superb. The presentation is especially beautiful and matches how delicious everything is that we have ever ordered. The staff are pleasant and always friendly to us. We have been dining here for awhile and will continue to for a long time.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Okay Johns Creek and Alpharetta folks, if you haven't been to Koko's Sushi, get off that couch and go. The owners and employees just have so much love for their resturant. From the way I was greeted, to the design of the resturant with all the loving details, to the wonderfully warm service, to the very fair prices, and the mouth-watering/stunning dishes.. it all says you must go. On top of that, I just got to eat the best Oyakodon I have had since moving to Georgia. From one foodie to another, just go and fall in love. For real. Meal consisted of: miso soup, yuzu garden, oyakodon, and the honey roll.

Kris S.

Yelp
Freshest sushi in town! Very fairly priced. The lady greets everyone and is so funny and sweet!
google avatar

Kirsten H.

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp and realized I drive past it every day and had never noticed it before so I tried it out and their sushi is phenomenal! It is so flavorful and very reasonable. Plus, the staff is really nice which helps. Love this spot and only come here for sushi now!
google avatar

Kelsey T.

Yelp
This place is solid. It looks a little sketchy from the outside, but Koko's is a great hole in the wall sushi spot. Sit at the bar and watch the chefs work their magic.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Stopped in this place the other day for lunch and was blown away by the freshness and deliciousness of their sushi. They have a standard $10 lunch special that is very generous in portion and the fish tastes like you're a long way from Alpharetta, GA (which, in the context of seafood, is a very good thing!) Also the ginger dressing on their salad was delightful - normally I skip that altogether but I finished every bite. In and out in 30 minutes...my new lunch haven.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Just popped in here to try out the local sushi for dinner. Alex and David treated us like they've known us for years. Everything they recommended was great and was definitely worth stopping in! We will be going back soon to try other items on their extensive menu.
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
This is the spot I usually go to when I'm in the mood for sushi. I usually eat the lunch menu because it is more attractive to my wallet. I enjoy the variety and the fish is fresh.
google avatar

Alan M.

Yelp
I am lucky to live so close to such a good sushi place.
