The Kolache, a Texas Mainstay, Finds a Chicago Audience - Eater Chicago

"When a pair of food entrepreneurs brought a treasured Texas delicacy to Chicago in the early stages of the pandemic, they weren’t sure how the city would react. But much to the delight of Houston native Eric Liu and Michigander Tom Bovio, hungry locals have embraced the kolache (“koh-la-chee”), a quintessential Texas breakfast pastry with Czech origins, and their brand, Howdy Kolache. Originally launched in early 2021 as a wholesale business selling out of coffee shops and bars like Botanical Cafe and Goldstar Bar, Howdy Kolache has accumulated a fanbase strong enough to spawn a permanent storefront that opened in October at 817 W. Fulton Market." - Naomi Waxman

Google
Im sad I have to change my rating for this location. I've been coming here for a couple of months and it's generally fine with good service. The bathroom situation is so weird, all the time I've been there it's the same notice "Restroom out of service" I'm convinced the employees just put it there to not have to clean it. It's been weeks if not months. I'd rather just go somewhere else that has a bathroom I can use if needed.

The Kolaches were great as always. I tried them in Indianapolis before and came to Houston for business, wanted to taste them at a different city and hands down they were as good as what I had before. Highly recommend!!

A very kind young lady and the place was clean. Food look and taste fresh. I'll come again and I'll recommend this place to everyone. Thanks again. They even have a reward system and you get free kolache once a month .

Always enjoy Kolache Factory when in the area. Ranchero is my favorite - spicy. Flavors of the month are usually pretty good as well. Decent coffee too.

Menu and quality of food is not consistent with other locations. Staff doesn’t care about this fact when brought to attention. Will not return or use for work orders anymore.

Google
Why have breakfast or lunch, when you can have BRUNCH!? Arriving at Kolache Factory at 11:45 am, there were still alot of choices. Everything looked amazing. These kolaches are HUGE, so well worth the value. Warmed them up and they were sooo yummy. Get them for a girls brunch or business meeting.

Google
I was very impressed with the variety of kolaches offered. The fruit kolaches are so good. I recommend the BBQ kolache or Philly cheese steak kolache. Both are equally great. And everything is fresh.

Yelp
One of the key secret is customer service, why they give you messed up priducts...? Oh well you live and learn...

Yelp
Service was quick and kolaches tasty as usual! Perfect new breakfast in a hurry spot!

Yelp
Service at this location is very hit or miss. If it's after 11:30am there will be little to no selection and they will refuse to make any specialty orders, no matter the size of the order. The kolaches are good when fresh.

Yelp
I've coming here for over 5 years at least once a week before Cobblestone opened up. It was mostly on the way to work, except for the morning of Memorial Day 2015 flooding. I was trapped at work. After water receded at about 6:30 am, I was desperately looking for a hot breakfast. I wouldn't believe McDonald's had its open sign lit but everyone was gone. Other places were all closed. Luckily, aromatic Kolaches Factory was open with full staff. I was so thankful with a cup of hot coffee in my hands while enjoying the warm kolaches. I was remembering the sleepless night behind me and looking forward for a safer drive home that morning. I felt like I was in heaven at the moment as no one could imagine. Otherwise, I'm mostly here around noon. Coffee is already cold. They just refuse to brew a pot of fresh coffee. "We can microwave it." Eh? That's right. They'll microwave anything you want in the store. I don't know if this is normal, but the prices for combo deals won't include coffee. But you need to add the price of coffee to get that special price. It took me almost a month to get over my anger.

Yelp
Had a great first experience here. I just moved back to the states after being overseas for 3 years, and work has relocated me to Houston. Tried this place for breakfast because of a coworkers suggestion, and it's safe to say that they've found a new longtime customer. Love the food, and the staff- everyone is so kind, especially early in the morning. Will be recommending to all!!!!!!

Yelp
Service is great. The staff is very friendly. I was able to be in and out in no time. From what I remembered the Philly steak was not that good on the day I visited. Staff offered to heat up my order. Ice machine was not in service.

Yelp
Good kolaches with good sweet bread. It's a chain so reviews don't mean that much but I like this one. Some cashiers are much more pleasant than others. I really like one lady. The rest are always like ok whatever. This is a good place if you need a quick good kolache fix.

Yelp
Being from Atlanta, but knowing Houston pretty well, I was asked by my colleagues in a meeting one day to bring in some local breakfast for our next meeting. I said Kolaches or Tamales? Not knowing either one by these yankee's , I got a few dozen Kolaches from KF . Albeit they did not have my favorite ( Boudin) they did have a plethora of choices and I just mixed up several and took them into the meeting. Most of the clan from Boston, New York, or California had no idea of what they were or had heard of them. Everybody dove in- some reluctantly as we work for a very lean "healthy" company but these were the real deal, had plenty of stock and I was the hero for the day. In the South- when you are in Atlanta- its Chick Filet biscuits, or Alabama/Mississippi, bacon egg and cheese biscuits or bagels, then Shipleys donuts in LA and throughout Texas. You don' show up at a meeting without food at 7 am in the South. They expect it- and if you can bring Kolaches- you know you are in Texas. They may not be 1200 calories and packed for a huge breakfast but not designed for that. They are designed to eat 2 or so- leave off a bit of bread and depending on which location- you may get a different mix of whats available. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp

Yelp
First impression of this location is great! The Kolaches have a nice texture and they really hit the spot. And according to my lady, the jalapeños are really spicy because they're fresh (a good sign). I only wished the coffee was hotter. It was still good. Recommended.

Yelp
Kolaches are hit or miss...sometimes good, other times not. I particularly like the ones with egg in them but the eggs can sometime taste overcooked. They need to be a bit more consistent. Service isn't the friendliest but they are ok. If you like kolaches, definitely hit them up..many different varieties.

Yelp
The kolache's are pretty good - just your standard chain kolache factory. YUMM. but the employees here aren't very good at english and sometimes it can get frustrating when I have to order 2 dozen different kinds of stuff for work. Also, they still use that old-school cash register system so I would check and do the math myself after getting the receipt.

Yelp
WIth more veriety the KF has a leg up, a short leg considering the quality of them. All items sound better than they really are. You get an option of wheat or white bread, options of meats (pepperoni, sausage, ham) and cheese, potatoes and tomatoes(naming a few) to fill in the blanks. Each customer can know certainly that the prices are fair. For this company to specialize in kolaches they could use a bit more creativity and flavor. Service is fine and the racks stay full of options for you. They're good, not nearly great.

Yelp
Horrible service. Charged way over, when I went back inside to get my money back for the kolaches I never even got she said she wouldn't give it to me. I will never be coming back here. Spent 17 dollars on 4 kolaches.

Yelp
What kind of excuse for sausage is this attempting to be? A super tiny little baby sausage inside a huge and misleading bun; not at all filling, just greasy. I just spent $20 for breakfast. I won't ever go back and I'm going to Jack in the Box for a 'proper' breakfast. Thanks, Obama.

Yelp
God I wished we had one of these in Atlanta. I had one nearby in KC and we used to get them as an unhealthy alternative to bagels (but not doughnuts). Nothing too complex, not going to impress a French chef but the diversity of options and the tasty flavors makes it a winner for most anyone.

Yelp
Kolache factories are always good for a quick snack. The Italian chicken is the best. The ones with eggs have been disappointing, their eggs taste powder-y so I would advise skipping the breakfast ones. I tried the meatball one for the first time today and was extremely disappointed. No flavor and mostly bread. But the rest of the "lunch" kolaches here are great

Yelp
A daily morning stop for me. They always have great fast customer service with a smile! Best kolaches in town.

Yelp
Kolache Factory is a nice little spot to pick up some quick breakfast. This store location often have special deal they advertise throughout the week. It's clean on the inside and the staff have always provided great customer service. My only complaint is that the kolaches are small as hell. You need at least 3 to 4 to fill you up! Very easily those 4 kolaches can turn into a 8 dollar meal depending on the type of you choose which isn't good value for me.

Yelp
I don't like kolaches but it's close to our church and when we need breakfast for our teams, we come here and they are great! The customer service is impeccable- they are willing and always flexible! Regarding the kolaches, there is a variety of choices and most importantly, they offer WHEAT!

Yelp
It appeared clean and it wasn't busy. Had really shitty service here May 10th. Stopped in early morning. The woman working there said nothing. No creating nothing. I had a coupon so I was like ok I will give them a try. It was my first time eating there. Coupon was by 3 get 3 free. Told her i had a coupon she gave me this ill look. So i said to myself ok let me just order cus it's to early in the morn for this woman to irritate me with her bad service and oddball looks. I ordered, added a croissant to my order. Thought I had one more kolache left, she was like no. Thinking to myself I have 5 kolaches and 1 croissant. Total rang up to 7.20 i was like that doesn't sound right for someone to get 3 free and it be that high when the kolaches are under 2 bucks each. So i paid and went on because I had to get them their destination before 6:20am. i didn't get a receipt and figured out after I left that the woman charged me for each kolache and took my coupon. At any point she could've said hey this coupon only covers kolaches or said you want 6 kolaches and a croissant. Something to imply we are both on the same page. On service this place won't even get a star from me, it was just that crappy. As for food taste the ones i picked out weren't to bad so for that I will give 2 stars. But I rather go across the street like I been doing to shipleys do-nuts and give them the business. I get better service and at least the kolaches are hot when u get them. But the woman who was working the counter that day not sure if she is regular or if she was just there that day got over on me with over charging and insult to injury keeping the discount coupon. I guess she needed it more than I did. She is enough to make me drive out the way to the next closest one and give them the business.

Yelp
This location is absolutely pathetic. These people don't know how to bake worth a damn. The kolaches feel like they used an extra bag of flour and are completely caked with it. Also, this location is skimping on the appropriate size of items (perhaps to save money?) compared to other locations I've been to. It's really sad to see this place go to hell in a hand basket as it's my closest one. I say fire everybody and start from scratch. Get people who actually know how to bake instead of mindless idiots.
