Kolache Shoppe - Gastro Obscura

"When it comes to essential American regional breakfast dishes, Texan kolaches could give New York bagels a run for their money. Much like bagels, kolaches arrived in the United States via European immigration. A pastry originally of Czech origin, Texan kolaches feature a pillowy dough and fillings both sweet, like apricot or cream cheese, and savory—featuring sausage and jalapeño kielbasa. It’s worth noting that the original Czech kolaches were almost exclusively sweet, and savory varieties were actually called klobasniky. Following the large-scale Czech immigration to Texas in the mid-1800s, the two words eventually merged into one catch-all dish. And it was here in Texas that modern kolaches evolved into their current iterations, introducing more regional flavors like egg and cheese or smoked brisket. Established in 1970 by Erwin Ahrens, Kolache Shoppe has long been a standard-bearer for freshly baked kolaches, using a sweet yeast dough recipe allegedly sourced from local “Czech grandmothers.” The current owners, Lucy and Randy Hines, took over in 2014, expanding a franchise business to four locations in Houston (as well as one in Celina, near Dallas) over the last decade. Menus vary slightly across locations, featuring classic sweet fillings like apricot, poppy seed, and cream cheese as well as hearty savory options including ranchero, jalapeño kielbasa, and venison and cheese. Nodding to the ever-evolving nature of the kolache (and of Houston), the founding location on Richmond Avenue also touts a special char siu bao variety created in collaboration with the owners of the Vietnamese sandwich shop Roostar. Know Before You Go To experience the full spectrum of kolache magic, get a box of three sweet and three savory pastries to share with friends. After all, when visiting friends in the morning around here, it’s customary to show up with a box of kolaches. As kolaches are a breakfast food, Kolache Shoppe opens at 6 a.m. and closes by noon." - Dan Q Dao

Google
I enjoy coming here every morning for a quick on the go kind of breakfast. The service here is great. When I come in, I'm greeted with a warm smile and a good morning. 🥰 The kolaches here are absolutely delicious. I always come in for there huevos ranchero. They have 1 with jalapeno and one without. Both of them I would highly recommend. 😋

Nessie Jones

Google
Absolutely outstanding kolaches. We have tried several varieties that were both sweet and savory and loved them all. This location is definitely worth the 30 min drive to pick them up. Not to mention, their staff is always so friendly and welcoming, which is also a huge plus. Thank you!

Google
I know it would be a hotly contested title, but in my view Kolache Shoppe is the best kolache shop in Houston. Whenever I am near Greenway plaza I drop by for a sausage, cheese, and jalapeno kielbasa and a coffee. It never fails to brighten up my day.

Mitchell

Google
10/10 kolaches but they are often low on supply by late-morning / lunch time. Wish they would stay open a bit later and/or make more kolaches for the lunch crowd. Also they usually don't heat them enough, I recommend asking for extra heating so the kolaches aren't cold in the middle.

Ruby Lim

Google
The best Ranchero style koloche. At least once a week a take a detour route to work so I can stop by the Koloche Shoppe Greenway to pick one...or two up. Yum!

Laura Hunt

Google
Please please please bring the chorizo egg and cheese kolache on full time it's so good. Great kolaches and the monthly ones are always fun!

James Bates

Google
Great savory and fruit kolaches! Especially liket the brisket, egg and cheese kolaches. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I love kolaches and klobasnek. Klobasnek you ask. So a little history lesson. I was raised in a Czech community SW of Houston. As a kid in high school, I would stop off at several ladies house on the way to school and pickup trays of home made kolaches. The smells were amazing and all the different flavors was amazing. These all had fruit fillings. A kolache has fruit filling. A klobasnek has a meat filling. So all these kolache stops and shops and factories should be called the Klobasnek Place. But kolache is easier to say I guess. So on with the review. I typically use the Kolache Factory for breakfast runs to my customers. But this morning I googled KF and the Kolache Shoppe came up first and me not paying attention, selected it and didn't realized the mistake until I pulled into the parking lot. But I was there so in I went. I got 1/2 dz sausage/egg/chz and 1/2 dz brisket (that was new to me). A bit more $$ than KF, but not bad. One I got to customers ofc and tried a brisket one, my eyes were open to the difference. OMG this was so good. The briskets were gone on a minute. The others in a few mins. These have to be the best strait up klobasnek I've ever had. They may not have as many choices as KF, but the quality is so much better. And the do have kolaches as well - cream cheese is my fav.

Yelp
To me this is the best Kolache shoppe in the city. I just wish they would bring the straight brisket back. You can't beat their bacon, sausage or ham and Swiss. They have maintained some of the allure from when I was a kid. The microwave is an aight touch but if they can figure out a better warming system that would be gold. The cinnamon rolls are good too: Definitely a Houston classic.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to grab breakfast or an early treat. The team is always nice and the line moves quick

Yelp
Great kolache spot for a quick breakfast, love that they also warm it up for you. I tried the egg & cheese rancheros, brisket jalapeno, sausage egg and cheese, bacon egg and cheese, and potato. The sausage egg and cheese was my favorite with a good balance of fillings.

Yelp
I was visiting family from California and didn't know what a Kolache was until my aunt took me here. I was able to try the egg and cheese Kolache, and man were they delicious! I devoured two within minutes! Service was great and the shop was a cute mom and pop shop. Can't wait to come back to try their other pastries here... so yummy!

Yelp
Omg...I stumbled upon this place and it did not disappoint. I am not a kolache eater but the brisket/egg/jalapeno kolache is amazing. They have a variety of kolaches and danishes. Definitely recommend going early because they do sellout fast. They will even warm it up for you. The staff is always friendly.

Yelp
Back in Houston for a long weekend.....had to stop in! I miss this so much. Still just as good as it ever was!
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
Got this thru too good to go! Great value and all the kolaches were delicious. Would go back not even thru too good to good. Each kolache had very significant filling.

Yelp
I can't say I'm exactly a kolache expert, but these are definitely the best kolaches I've ever had! We came in on a Saturday morning around 10am, and they were still fully stocked. I ordered a brisket, egg, cheese, & jalapeño kolache, a small sausage kolache, and a S'mores kolache. The savory ones were heated up upon request, free of charge. The brisket kolache was heavenly--such rich flavors and well-stuffed, too. The S'mores kolache was perfectly sweet. I thought all the prices were very fair and the service was quick and friendly. And just FYI, it is a small shop with no chairs/tables, so take-out only. Overall, highly recommend!

Yelp
You honestly cannot go wrong with anything offered on the menu here. The klobasnek, fruit kolaches, etc. I always try something different every time I visit and I have not been let down. Don't sleep on their seasonal menu either. They also collaborate with local restaurants and I recently tried their Burger Bodega x Kolache Shoppe chopped cheese kolache, and it was mind bendingly delicious. Just imagine a cheeseburger instead of the warm kolache dough.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
I saw all the stuff they make and had to visit. Brisket from Pinkerton's bbq with cheese and jalapenos in a kolache/klobasniki....yes please! I saw they used Prasek's venison pork sausage in another tasty kolache/klobasniki....got this one with cheese and jalapeno too....both of these are amazing. We've been big fans of Pinkerton's and Prasek's, now we're big fans of Kolache Shoppe. They have two other locations I'll have to try. Friendly people work here. The only hitch is this shopping center has a full parking lot most of the time.
google avatar

Yelp
I was expecting the quality of the kolaches to be similar to those from Shipleys and Kolache Factory, so I was pleasantly surprised when it surpassed my expectations. I was blown away by the freshness and quality of these Kolaches. I got the brisket, egg, and jalapeño kolache. The kolache was double the size of other kolaches and was very well stuffed with brisket. The bread itself was airy and light. My friend's loved theirs as well. Make sure to get it warmed up. Will definitely be coming back!

Edgae R.

Yelp
Good selection at a reasonable price. Discount on kolaches the last 30min before they close.
google avatar

Lorraine I.

Yelp
The service are great. The kolache with sausage cheese and jalapeño are super good. I love the store it is super organized and clean. With plenty of parking in the front. Love the store.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Not being from Houston, I was very unsure of what to pick up for a quick breakfast. I decided upon this place hoping for a yummy kolache and they delivered. I got the sausage, cheese and jalapeño and it was fresh out of the oven & the bread itself was so soft. Overall - service was good but when we showed up at 11, we had to wait 15-20 minutes for select kolaches because majority of them were out for the day. (That's why I took away one star)
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
5/5 kolaches - the dough around it is always fluffy and soft. The eggs are so perffecttt too. Every flavor I had was absolutely delicious but the favorite has to be the potato kolache!! Love.

Wafer T.

Yelp
If I told you right off that these were the best kolaches in Houston, you might not believe me. First, the dough is perfectly proofed, soft, and with a wonderful, fresh, flavor. The variety is extraordinary. Meats, eggs, cheese, jalapenos, and of course fruit are all there. The fillings are generous. So have I mentioned the fact that these are (by far) the best kolaches in town? Well, come to think about it, they absolutely are!

Yelp
For almost 35 years it's been our favorite place for kolaches and cinnamon rolls. My "Bohemian" mom made the best, but these authentic posipka topped treats are as close to hers as I've ever found.

Kirk V.

Yelp
Rude costumer service, dirty facilities, the three women working were rude and unprofessional. And the food tasted mid on top of it all.

Eunice F.

Yelp
I usually place my orders online for pick up. The staff is very friendly and helpful, especially the younger Hispanic gentleman that's always at the front. They greet you as soon as you walk in. My orders have always been correct and prompt. I usually put comments in my orders to heat up certain ones or bag them separately and they always follow through. Kolaches are always fresh and tasty. I always enjoy and appreciate their monthly collaborations. I wish they sold iced coffee or lattes like the one in the heights, but I prefer my greenway location more.
google avatar

Christy P.

Yelp
Excellent kolaches! They are soft and pillowy without being excessively bready. I had the ranchero with jalapeño, egg, and cheese and the lemon cream. The ranchero had a little kick to it and was nice and cheesy, which I appreciated. The lemon cream was pretty good but the filling is very sugary, just as an FYI for those that are not a fan of much sweetness. I did try a bite of the brisket and jalapeño and it was really good--really high quality brisket. At 9ish on a Saturday, the line wasn't bad. Prices were $12-13 for four kolaches.
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
This place is pretty good. I noticed it was constantly full while I was getting my order so it seems popular. I'm sure just like taco trucks everybody in Houston has their favorite Kolache spot and unfortunately this isn't mine. Great service and pretty good product but I would say overall it's pretty MID thus 3-stars.

Yelp
Have been craving kolaches for a while now. Like a few years. Decided today was the day. This shop was close to me and has been calling my name every time I drive by. Got a cinnamon roll for my kid but she ended up eating my kolaches and leaving me with the cinnamon roll. I'd probably pass on the cinnamon roll. It was ok I guess, but it's no Cinnabon. They're in the back and not on display if you really want one. Kolaches were good. I just had one bite of each because of the kiddo. I couldn't tell which was which though. One was thicker and meatier. I assume it's the venison. Taste was similar though. They got hot sauce (La Victoria) in packets by the registers. Only medium level though.

Yelp
Wow! So many fresh and yummy options at this location. Stopped by for a quick bite and was super pleased. Was greeted when I walked in and got a regular sausage & cheese kolache. It was fresh and the dough was fluffy. Will definitely go back and try a sweet kolache they offered (never had!) or go earlier for the ones that ran out already. Also, the guy at the front was very nice and happy. Check this place out if you're in the area and need a delicious breakfast!!!
google avatar

Brittney M.

Yelp
The dough y'all. THE DOUGH. Light, airy, pillowy soft. I've tried a couple of the savory and sweet kolaches and they are all delicious. I tried a cinnamon roll for the first time today and I will get more than one when I visit in the future. Soooo soft with tall layers filled with cinnamon goodness. The glaze is light and delicious on top but I could also take a loaf of the cinnamon roll bread without the glaze and be incredibly happy.

Yelp
Un lugar con kolaches muy frescos y buen café. Recomendado! $$$

Yelp
Literally, it was such a wonderful quick stop this morning for some of the best kolaches in Houston. The staff moved quickly and the vibes gave all the goodness of the holiday season. I shared the following: egg rancheros, brisket, venison, sausage and cheese, kielbasa, and pralines.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Good Kolaches! We had the bacon cheese, cream cheese, and egg/sausage. It was delicious!
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
This place has fresh goods! Everything was quality and flavorful. I got a few of the regular kiolbassa sausage and cheese kolaches, ranchero, and cinnamon rolls. So good. Service was good and prompt. Spacious inside and not too loud. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Came all the way from California for kolache's. Thank you to Abraham who helped us he's great.

Yelp
I had an early appointment and was looking for breakfast to pick up on the way home. I did a radio search and yelp and a couple of things popped up including this kolache shop. I decided it was close enough to where I was and easy to pick up. I picked up a spinach & egg, brisket, and a sausage & cheese. I brought them home and had it for breakfast with my spouse before we started our work day. It is hours later and we are both feeling terrible, our stomachs hurt, we haven't had anything else to eat today and the only culprit is the kolache's Never returning.
google avatar

Yelp
The Kolache Shoppe is my local 'down-the-street' kolache spot. But even if they weren't just around the corner, I would be getting my kolaches from this place! Their approach to kolaches varies a bit from other places... their ingredients and fillings are top notch, and their breading is light and fluffy. My favorite items from Kolache Shoppe include... (1) The Venison Sausage, Jalapeno and Cheese (2) The Kiolbassa Sausage, Jalapeno and Cheese (3) Pinkerton's Brisket Kolache (4) The Breakfast Sausage, Egg and Cheese (5) The Lemon Cream (6) Nutella (7) Poppy Seed They also have seasonal flavors that come and go with the season!
google avatar

Darrien L.

Yelp
Always helpful staff delish fresh food and a great mocha cappuccino. The line for the drive thru is insane so it's worth just going inside.

Samantha R.

Yelp
I love this kolaches place! Great price for the quality! I love the strawberry. They always have a kolache of the month that are unique and worth a try. This months, sausage jalapeño bread is delicious along with the strawberries and cream!

Thomas B.

Yelp
Great breakfast items but somewhat pricey Good seating area with climate control Some items sell out fast; others are seasonal

Asma A.

Yelp
Best kolache shop in houston! Customer for more than a year and i can say with confidence that the kolaches are always fresh! Worth a try. Service is quick and the smell is amazing :) the atmosphere is great!

Yelp
I've been eyeing Kolache Shoppe for over 2 years now, ever since we moved across the street, and was never able to grab any cause of their hours! 7am-noon weekdays and I think until 1pm on Saturdays, closed Sundays! A bit restrictive for those of us who aren't morning people and have to work during the week but it is what it is! I finally was able to give this place a shot, after we moved away - we had movers coming one morning and I decided to grab everyone breakfast.. finally an opportunity for Kolache Shoppe cause it was early on a weekday! Yay!! The shop is pretty small - you walk in to a right we on the right and a tiny display of Kolaches in front of you. Lots of flavors and options to choose from - sweet and savory, they've got you covered! I grabbed the brisket, jalapeño bacon, normal bacon and eggs, and ham & Swiss! Everything was super moist and delicious! The meats were tasty and the buns were so so soft and buttery! Everyone destroyed them! I can see why they have such high ratings - the shop is cute! Kolaches comes in a cute box! They have drink options as well - including coffee! If hours were a bit more accessible, later into the early afternoon and on weekends, I would probably make the drive and venture here more often! Some of the best Kolaches I've had in town - I enjoyed the brisket one and the bf said he loved the smaller bacon jalapeño ones! The soft bread makes it stand out as well as the flavors of the fillings!

Maureen H.

Yelp
Was in Houston so I made a purchase of the sausage and fruit kolaches to take to friends. They live in Cypress but knew about this original kolache shop. I learned about this place when I was working nearby back in the 70's. I tried one of their breakfast kolaches on my drive to my friends. Service excellent. Only a couple of tables so mostly takeout.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Best kolaches in town that's for sure!! I love the variety they offer - they have vegetarian options as well as the regular sausage/cheese ones. My favorite is the ranchero, egg, and cheese kolache! Delicious!! I've sampled the fruit ones (mango, strawberry and cream, blueberry) also and very tasty. It's honestly a little too bready for me, but I get them every now and again. Their chai latte is also a fav here for hot drinks. They have a weekday specials from 11-12, buy one get one free!
google avatar

Casey C.

Yelp
Best kolaches I have ever had in Houston! Make sure to try the chorizo kolache, it's one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. The minis are good too. Can't wait to try some of the other kolaches!
google avatar

Ana Maria G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious kolaches. Fluffy, soft bread that is fresh and tasty. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Brandi P.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!!! The bread is soooo good!!! It's light and fluffy with a bit of sweetness. We sampled several types. I loved the sausage, cheese and jalapeño, although I wish they didn't use American cheese. My party tried several of the fruit, sausage, and cheese kolaches. Everyone loved them all! We also tried the spinach and ranchero vegetarian kolaches. They are seriously all great! The breakfast sausage, egg, and cheese kolaches was also good. No problems with parking. They are located in a strip mall shopping center. I can't say the service was very friendly, but they got my order out quickly.
google avatar

Rose Z.

Yelp
Please excuse the not very aesthetic half-eaten kolache photo. I took this because I was blown away by how packed the brisket kolache was. I really wasn't expecting so much juicy, smoky brisket in one kolache. I've also had most of their sweet kolaches and they're all great. My heart belongs to their savory ones, though. I could (and have) eaten 4 small sausage and cheese kolaches in one sitting. Meat + soft and slightly sweet pillowy bread = perfection.
google avatar

Lotus H.

Yelp
Best kolaches in town! I've been coming to the Richmond location for years and love their melt-in-your-mouth bread! My savory favs are the kielbasa sausage, egg/cheese/sausage, and sweet fav is the blueberry. Heights location is great too, but you'll be in a long line on weekends.
google avatar

Roland M.

Yelp
The only good outcome from this new ownership that happened 5-8 yrs ago is the receipe the original owner from Halletsville, Tx left with them. Aside from changing the sausage & portion in the roll, well thats a whole other deal. Anyhow, I quit going there for 6months expecting maybe it was just me, but nope it wasn't me. So this morning I ordered a kielbasa/chz cause they were out of jalapeno/kielbasa cause they only make enough to apese the morning wave and not have to waste, or lose money. Ok, Ok, I'll stop. My roll was put in the microwave but not warmed up and it was given back to me and I didn't notice it till I was back on 59 feeder. Also, to make matters worse. The cream cheese kolache was hard on the top inside circle. Which means they gave me the old ones before giving me the fresh looking ones on the other trey that I saw. This yelper won't be going back ill just wait till I have to travel to San Antonio so I can stop in Shulenburg to get me a proper kielbasa jalapeno roll and a supper soft fresh kolache.
google avatar

Demi T.

Yelp
Very delicious kolaches! From the first bite, I was immediately impressed with how much flavor was packed into the kolache. The outer bread was very soft, and there was a generous portion of filling, cooked perfectly. I ordered the sausage, egg and jalapeño & the Pinkerton brisket, egg, and jalapeño kolaches. Both were amazing!! I highly highly recommend the brisket kolache. I love Pinkertons BBQ, so I immediately knew the brisket choice would be mind blowing. The drive thru makes it so convenient and quick to get a morning pick me up meal. They also serve coffee drinks here as well, making the Kolache Shoppe a quick stop for all you need.
google avatar

Yelp
I think the hype of this establishment got the best of them as I left feeling a bit let down by these kolaches and business. My first visit a few years ago wasn't bad, quickly serviced and kolache wasn't bad. I tried their brisket and jalapeno one because well duh we are in Texas! The brisket portion was fairly generous but a bit too vinegary for my taste buds. However, the dough was good, fluffy, and not too sweet. I was here just this weekend and although the dough was still fairly tasty, the fillings were just ok, and the overall experience left a sour taste in my mouth. I ordered 8 kolaches and double checking my order before leaving, I noticed I was charged for 9. I go back, and the lady double checks and realizes the error. Yet, during this process the kolaches are being touched with her bare hands...However she was nice enough to put gloves on per my request and even exchanged the ones she touched with new ones, yet the contaminated ones now remained in the case. Trying not to show my absolute disgust I said thanks and left. The star is definitely their dough as it lends to a nice breading but the filling wasn't as special. I tried a few different ones and so far my favorite is the jalapeno sausage and cheese, but it might be because I am a fan of spice. Their egg filled kolaches have a nice consistency as their eggs were well scrambled, the sausage is a bit on the salty side, and their venison was extremely lean, and not as flavorful...BUT if you prefer a mild flavor this is the one for you. I am also a sucker for boudin kolache but this one was mushy and on the wetter side and the proportions just weren't there, much more bread compared to filling. Overall, I would say this is closer to 3.5 stars, if I was in the area and needed a kolache fix, this would do the job, but not something I crave. Also, double check your order if ordering more than 5...I would also suggest for Kolache Shoppe to figure out a system to identify their kolaches as it is a bit worrisome when the worker is asking ME to try and identify which kolache I bought...Oh, and watch out for those bare hands!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Good price, good coffee, good Kolaches! GOOD: Everything tastes great, the fruit kolaches have just enough filling, and the breakfast style are super tasty. BAD: Bread isn't as firm as Kolache Factory, and sometimes there isn't enough filling the breakfast style. If you order online they don't ship very well and will need to be microwaved when they arrive. Give them a try, I would prefer Kolache factory, but they are a close second.

Yelp
These are the bomb! And that's on period Pooh! I've never been disappointed and take family when they come in town!
