The Best Soft Serve in NYC | Eater NY

"In line with its spare menu of breakfast parathas, egg rolls, and hot and cold chai, Kolkata Chai Co. also offers chai soft serve, full-flavored, rich, only slightly sweet, and tasting of cardamom. There is outdoor seating on a quiet East Village street, a real boon in summer." - John Tsung

15 Places to Try Tea in NYC | Eater NY

"In 2019, brothers Ayan and Ani Sanyal followed through on their mission to bring “authenticity, respect and tradition” to masala chai in NYC with the opening of a small shop in the East Village. Their chai is a flavorful blend of organic Assam black tea, whole or oat milk, and aromatics like fresh ginger, rose petals, cloves, and peppercorn. It presents a sweet counterpoint to their savory samosas and breakfast paratha filled with eggs, amul cheese, tomato jam. The chai oat milk soft serve is another reason to head there." - Caroline Shin

Google
Their chai is one of the best in NYC Very authentic and delicious. However, you pay almost $6 for a tiny cup, when you can get an authentic chai from other places for half the price.

I’ll be honest, this place just charges exorbitant prices for the sole reason that they know that the local populace don’t have a clue as to what normal prices are for the cuisine they are serving. Got coffee and chai and it was so aggressively mediocre that my dad didn’t even finish the cup I got him. Better off going to the local Dunkin imo. It’s mostly just to provide “hipsters” from Brooklyn with a “ authentic vibe” LOL. They’re charging 3.5 times the average price of a cup of chai at a fraction of the quality smh. If you want good chai and authentic south Asian cuisine go to Jackson heights and it’ll run you like 2 dollars and the food will cost you a fraction of the cost. It will also taste a lot better lol.

If whoever invented the oat milk chai ice cream proposed to me I would marry them on the spot. Culinary genius

I had gotten a million Instagram ads for this place so when I came to New York I had to check it out. I absolutely love the concept of Kolkata Chai; prior to my visit here, the only chai I’ve ever had is the powdered sugary kind they serve at most coffee shops. This stuff is legit. For my first time, I think the taste was a little jarring to me, but I’m convinced if I went back a couple times I’d come to love it. The vibes were great— this place is actually inside a super awesome Indian restaurant which is a cool concept. I’ve never been to India so I can’t compare it to that but I trust these guys: their passion for authentic chai is clear, and their branding is beautiful, which is a hard combo to beat. Overall I highly recommend visiting!

Google
I finally found authentic chai that tastes EXACTLY like the kind I had when I went to India years ago. I’ve tried many places throughout nyc- cafes, restaurants, online.. nothing was on the same level. Until I tried Kolkata Chai. After following Kolkata on social media for a while, I finally took the plunge and drove out to the Brooklyn location since it was closer, to see if the hype was real. And let me tell you- YES, the hype IS indeed real. I ordered the Kesar Chai and the first sip transported me to some special memories of my time in India. I also ordered the black cardamom latte for my husband & the soft serve chai for my kids. All 5 stars! My husband who isn’t even into tea of any kind LOVED the chai. It’s so good I purchased two bags to make at home. I had excellent service and conversation from Labib who was so kind and helpful. Will definitely be back and looking forward to stopping by the main locations in the city also.

Google
We were in need of a chai on a hot day. We didn’t want some cafe to make us a half-assed chai like a red-headed stepchild. So we googled chai hoping to at least get a good review. But to our delight we found Kolkata Chai Co. 5 minutes down. Much to our delight they had authentic chai and diverse creations including Chai Ice cream (not pictured because it was too tasty). This place is absolutely delightful. I’m not sure whether it was a shtick or actual battle but they should keep going the battle of oat vs original. It’s the perfect NYC battle. So if it’s Chai on your mind in this Coffee driven world give it a try.

Yum yum yum. Loved the vegan oatmilk chai soft serve I had here today 😋 creamy and a little icey with amazing chai flavor. Perfect size even though it does seem a bit small at first glance. They also have some yummy hot drinks and do an oatmilk chai drink that’s vegan. Can’t wait to dry as the weather continues to cool 🍂

Yelp
Dropped in for some iced chai after lunch. The interior is quite nice and vibey. Some of the staff are also friendly. The service unfortunately wasn't great. Our friends ordered a few iced chais to go. They fill it from a premade batch in a container. They ran out and went to the back to refill it, but it took a LONG time for them to return. It'd be better if they had a few containers at the ready, especially for a post lunch peak time.

Yelp
Ummmm YEAH this lives up to the hype. Okay so there are a few Kolkata Chai Co locations around NYC (good for them!) and this one is attached to the Inday Indian restaurant. They have a window on the side but not sure they actually take orders from it. We went inside to order at the cafe bar area on the other side of the restaurant. The barista was so kind and helpful during our first visit, and since we were walking around, opted for the hot masala chai. It DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I'm telling you, this is delicious, rich, flavorful chai that brought me back to my time in India. Simply perfection! Naturally, we visited again a few days later and got the viral chai soft serve that we'd seen all over social media. Again, it LIVED UP to the hype! Soooo rich and creamy, flavorful and smooth. We split the smallest one and it was plenty for us for a little snack. Can't recommend stopping here enough - get a hot chai one day, and the soft serve another!

Yelp
After walking around Williamsburg for miles in the middle of the summer, my partner and I wanted something to cool off with. Thankfully we walked by Kolkata because we love Chai! The drinks were wonderful, very flavorful and uplifting. We sipped on them while walking and it was the perfect compliment for an afternoon bouncing around Brooklyn. The inside of this place was nice and clean. We had really friendly service from the barista and will visit again when we are craving Chai in BK.

Yelp
Stopped by here to grab something refreshing due to the current heat wave making it impossible to stay outside for too long. The set up of the location is interesting - they have the sit down restaurant on the right and the cafe on the left within the same space. I like that even though the cafe seems to be catered for a quick grab and go style, they still provided a large communal sitting space for those that want to enjoy their coffee/ice cream indoors. They also have 2-3 benches outdoor as well. I got the iced oatmilk masala chai latte and the masala soft serve. Even though the drink was a decent size, the latte was filled with ice all the way to the top so it tasted very watered down. Which ironically I actually liked at the moment since I prefer not sweet drinks and I just wanted something cold from the heat. I would ask for less ice if you ordered their iced drinks if you want to taste more flavor. The chai soft serve was overly sweet. I think if they had a swerve version of vanilla and chai or something creamy vs chai it would taste really good to balance out the overpowering sweetness.

Yelp
I was very excited to stumble upon this Kolkata Chai location (sharing a space with Inday) walking about in Williamsburg. I get their ads on Instagram all the time and had wanted to try their chai before placing an order. I love chai but too many cafes load it with sugar, and I was hopeful that Kolkata would be more tea and spices than sugar. I walked into a bright but calming space to be greeted by a very nice and friendly gent. I proceeded to order an iced chai (note: oat milk only, and on tap) and asked about the sweetness level. He said it was lightly sweetened, but the way he made it today might make it a little sweeter than usual. So he offered me a sample to make sure I liked it before I ordered! We both tried it, and it was excellent. He noted that the sweetness level is what they aim for, and it is indeed light and complementary to the tea and spices. The chai's spices really come through, almost a bit savory but nonetheless comforting and delicious. In a thoughtful touch, they use big ice cubes, keeping the chai cold while melting slowly and not diluting it. I can't speak to the other locations, but this place is pretty terrific! It's definitely in my saved list for a return visit.

Yelp
Guy behind the counter gave a great recommendation to try the original cold oat milk chai. It really hit the spot since it was so hot out!! Love the beautiful space and had I been ready for lunch I also would have grabbed some Indian food. I wanted to buy the concentrate and was told that it is available at the other two Manhattan locations. Will def be back!

Yelp
Always skeptical of places that offer traditional Indian chai but this place is pretty good. They also did a fusion of chai / coffee speciality drinks. The dirty chai with cardamom foam is great. I also tried the egg paratha wrap which was really good
