Komoda Store And Bakery - Review - Makawao - Maui - The Infatuation

"Pass the Cup Noodles and cans of Vienna sausage and head straight to the bakery case at Komoda, a grocery store and bakeshop that’s been around for more than a century in upcountry Maui, and about as ramshackle as you might expect of anything that age. That case offers classic donuts and long johns, but you’re here for the stick donuts (five glazed mini fried dough balls stacked on a skewer—a.k.a. the most fun way to eat donuts) and their guava malasadas. We’re not usually a fan of filled malasadas since they’re often stuffed with artificially flavored goop, but at Komoda, it’s a tart-sweet guava jam that actually tastes like fruit. It’s so good that you’ll finish it and immediately go straight back in the perpetual yet efficient line for another." - Martha Cheng

"Opened in 1916, this UpcountryMauiicon draws hordes of locals and savvy tourists with its racks of sweets, including legendary cream puffs and amazing stick doughnuts. The menu here also features pies, rolls, bread, cookies, cupcakes, turnovers, and irresistible guava malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts), but the bakery is best known for its Long Johns—yeast-risen pastry bars coated with glaze or icing. Go early, as the crowds pick the trays bare by 10 a.m., and be sure to check out the memorabilia of bygone eras tucked among the postcards, pantry staples, and fishing gear for sale."

It’s been 30 years since I last had a cream puff. And it’s still incredibly delicious. Simple and no frills historic bakery. No secret or complicated menu. Local spot that’s been crushing it for over 100 years. What they have is the best on the island. Get there early because things sell out. Must stop for anyone.

Google
It’s all about the pastries here, get them while they’re fresh and hot before they sell out! Love the history and tradition since 1916 :)

We were excited to try this place after hearing that it’s a 4-generation Japanese family run business. When checking out, I happily told the cashier woman that we came all the way from Japan and was really excited to try out their store and she simply just let out an “oh” in response. Horrible customer service. Such a shame to their grandparents that founded this place.

The coconut twist was delicious. There is a 10 dollar minimum if you are paying with debit or credit.

Desserts: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall: Worth a go for some good sweet treats. Gotta get there early! The extended review... Desserts: Peach Pear Turnover - 3/5 - Not a bad turnover. Pretty standard fare. I would have enjoyed it being a little bit more crispy. Donut Sticks - 4/5 - One of the staples of the store and a must have. It's definitely a very fresh donut, nice and and chewy and perfectly glazed. Cream Puffs - 5/5 - OMG. You must get these. The filling is amazingly rich and tasty. We bought a dozen and I could not stop eating them. Service: 4/5 - Friendly service. Ambiance: 3/5 - Slightly run down on the inside and more of a grab and go place since there isn't anywhere to eat.

I was very excited about coming back to this place! I wanted the donuts with the guava filling (malasada) besides the cream puff. This business is very popular and has constant lines from people ordering their lovely pastries. It’s certainly worth a stop here in Makawao.

Google
One of my favorite bakery here in Maui. They have the best selection of donuts, vanilla cream puff, butter rolls, longs John, turn overs and chantily cakes. My only suggestion is that the vendors needed to be more friendly. I had the not so good service today by one of the cashiers. Over all I still love and recommend this place.

Google
Cute walk through the memory lane. The store showed a lot of the family history of the Komoda family so it's great that the store is still in the family. We tried about four of their donuts, cream puffs and malasada and they were quite soft and fluffy. Couldn't finish them all in one go so we kept some for the next day and they were not hard.

Yelp
My daughter said they're known for the Stick Donut. She loves it so we purchased a total of 15 sticks to bring home. The worker said they're also known for the Cream Puff with Vanilla Custard Filling. I remember trying this when employees from Maui used to fly to Oahu and bring it for our department...didn't know they bought it from here. It's soooo good...wish I could've brought some home but this place closes at 1pm and I fly out at 9:30 pm tonight...I'm so sad. Well, I bought one each for the 3 of us so we're satisfied but still sad. We brought the Stick Donut home and gave to a few people. Everyone liked it but to my husband and I, we thought it tasted like donut holes...nothing special. Not sure what we're missing here...lol! FYI: - This place is located on a busy road and hard to find street parking...we had to get dropped off so good to have a designated driver to look for parking. - They run out of donuts so the worker said it's good to call in your order.

Yelp
Nice workers, nice bakery, nice food. On our first visit to the bakery we arrived at 11am and were met with shelves that were almost completely empty. On our second visit, we woke up early and arrived while the bakery still had much to offer. So be advised: come early or leave empty/handed. That being said, I don't know that this location has any distinguishing features. My family and I ordered ten or so items, but were not blown away by any. The creams and filling were very good, but the dough of the pastries was so dense that the malassadas came out to be slightly above average overall. Same goes for the stick and the classic jelly doughnut. I do not regret coming here, but I would not say this is a must visit. The place serves nice baked goods, but not incredible baked goods.

Yelp
Rating it a 1 only because I woke up super early and drove 30 mins to get here only to find out it was closed. I wish this spot had some sort of minimal online presence to at least alert potential customers that the shop is closed for the week. Boo!! Had so wanted to try these!

Yelp
A delicious stop for the famous malasadas on a stick as well as the more traditional malasadas - both custard filled and regular. The grocery offered lots of other bread options as well but we had our eyes on malasadas! Easy ordering and takeaway, friendly and fast service.

Yelp
Perfect stop if you're visiting Haleakalā or near Haiku We were super excited to try this after hearing the history and how long they've been in business. Tried the Guava donut (malasada). It was so worth the stop! Filling was so flavorful and not overly sweet. Donut had a fresh prefect texture. There was not much else in the store but lots of sweets to choose from!

Yelp
The Best pastries in Hawaii, hands down! It's been over 2 decades since I've had pastries from here & nothing's changed (in a good way) they still do everything traditionally. You can tell The custard filling in the cream puffs & Long Johns are made from scratch & the stick donuts melt in your mouth, just as I remembered!

Yelp
When you come here it is really for the glazed twist on a stick Same idea for years. Delish.

Yelp
The very best bakery and general store in Maui! I am obsessed with their Guava Masaldas and donuts on a stick.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Yes, I finally made it to this bakery. We come to Maui annually and this is the first time we have made it here when they are open! And at noon to top it off! Limited baked goods during this time of the day, see pictures. Today we got guava malasadas - so good! The filling was generous, so messy, so be careful. Next visit, if open, we are going to try the malasada sticks. Atmosphere - Small local bakery that opens and closes whenever they want. Or have we just been unlucky in the past...? Can't share their business hours, as I feel it has never matched Yelp, or in the past it seemed to never matched the posted sign. Posted sign 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Owners say they have a Komoda sign ID the building, can you see it? See my picture. I think they took the sign down like 10 years ago. Service - Good, small local business. I believe the owners work here themselves. Price - Almost $8 for 4 malasadas, I think inexpensive for what we got. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success. I hope to continue to visit when you are open...

Yelp
Komoda Bakery is a locally owned, family run, Maui institution with their roots going back to 1916 having originally started as a restaurant in the spot where Polli's now stands. That's over 100 years of serving our community folks! It wasn't until 1947 that they started their transition into what is now the bakery and general store. Komoda's, as the locals call it, is famous for their stick donuts -- deliciously glazed balls of donuts, grouped together in fives on a long bamboo skewer. This makes it on-the-go friendly and easily shareable with friends and family. They are also know for their malasadas and their cream puffs which still uses the same original family recipe to this day. You'll also find typical bakery fare like long johns, pies, cakes, cocoa puffs, butter rolls, bread, cookies, and more! The store still looks the same after all these years and has not seen any major renovations. It truly feels like you've stepped back in time as they are unapologetically old school. Trust, the mom and pop vibes here are damn strong -- and that, for me, is part of their charm. They remain an incredibly popular amongst locals and visitors alike. So much so that they often sell out of many items early in the day. They also go on vacations throughout the year, so don't be surprised to find them closed with a note on the door. I'm so happy that they made it through the pandemic and I truly hope that people continue to patronize this establishment so that they stay open for many years to come.

Yelp
The rudest help ... drove so far to try this place I had to walk away not worth supporting this business... we didn't know what to get and the rude helper made us feel like we were wasting her time ... Aloha Should be grateful for customers helping to keep your business open ... I would rather eat dirt than buying at this place

Yelp
Great family run bakery in the heart of Makawao town full of history. Check them out

Yelp
Great little bakery in Makawao. The stick donuts were excellent! Definitely a vibe here - everyone knows what they want and it is the pastries! They have some canned goods and other items but obviously most are only here for the donuts. They did a great job of checking people out at the register pretty quickly. They clearly have a system and it works!

Yelp
Born and raised on Komoda's pastries. Always loved it and always will. I haven't been there in a very long time. I decided to go this morning. The staff was different. Only 2 workers FOH that I've never seen before. I ordered a cinnamon roll, donut stick and cream puff. The shape of the cream puff looked like a long-john and flat, the stick donut was pretty flat. I was confused when I opened up my pastry box to eat. The cinnamon roll was delicious. I asked the 2 workers what happened to the other workers guess they switched job duties so the BOH is now FOH. It's such a different vibe. I miss the other workers and I miss the way the pastries used to look. Guess times are changing in the Komoda bakery world. But I'll still be a customer.

Yelp
I first heard about Komoda Bakery about 14 years ago. Yes, it was nothing but rave reviews, especially about the stick donut. And for whatever reason, I never stopped by despite flying to Maui every month, for three years, for work. I'm happy to say that I finally found the opportunity. We arrived early morning on a Saturday, and there were already about 10 people in front of me. However, I appreciated how they organized the bakery to form a line so there was no cutting. Moreover, they had three registers open with display cases between each of the registers. So the line went quickly and you didn't have to step out of line to see what was available. They also had a lot of bread, rolls, stick donuts, and other pastries already boxed up if you wanted to buy in bulk. My coworker went with a malasada stick and a cinnamon roll. Both were good. Nothing else to add.

Yelp
So crazy how Komoda Bakery is STILL GOING SINCE 1916!!! Better late than never for me, but I was mad at myself for not visiting Komoda Bakery back in the early 90's when I used to work at Grand Wailea in Kihei. Lucky for me, we found ourselves in Maui decades later, and I got to enjoy this visit with Mrs.Q. We got up at the crack of dawn and made the trek from Lahaina to upcountry Maui to the little town of Makawao 5 minutes before they opened at 7am. Arrived to a fully stocked pastry case and only 3 customers ahead of us. Got an assortment of sweets and I so wanted to try a slice of their chantilly cake. Unfortunately slices were not available, so I did the most sensible thing and bought the entire cake! No regrets! Be sure to add this historic institution to your next Maui trip! Continued our Maui foodtinerary crawl and hit up nearby Pukalani Superette, and later Takamiya Market, Sam Sato's, Tin Roof, and Tasaka Guri Guri. ALOHA!!! SHAKA METER: \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ 5

Yelp
After 2 unsuccessful attempts, I FINALLY managed to go there when it was open and to have some pastries. Thumbs up! So about an hour after eating breakfast in Upcountry Maui, we went to Komoda Store since we were in the area anyway and it was open and not sold out of the pastries! For my breakfast #2 of the day, we went with the cream puffs, malasadas, and stick donut. All of them a-okay! I especially liked the cream puffs - the filling really made it. There was a line of about 10-12 people but it moved pretty quickly. Parking is just past the store, or in my case, had to find street parking. No seating inside, so if you're like me, I just ate on the sidewalk outside. If you're in the area, check out the hours and if they open, give them a try! Especially the cream puff!!
google avatar

Cindy F.

Yelp
Okay! When you first walk in it is not impressive. It's old and quite frankly looks pretty empty, stock wise. We went midweek so no line which was good. But by the way it's set up they must get crowds in there. Once at the counter you can get prepackaged goods or choose from behind the counter. We chose several types of donuts and our faves were the glazed donut sticks and the round ones with guava. They were the reason for the 5 star. At the end of the day, we were there for quality baked goods and that's exactly what we got. We went twice you must try the Thai food truck on the same side of the street. Chefs

Yelp
Have to get the cream puffs. So good. Not sweet Good smells. Soft puffs. I bought 2 and got 5 more for the road trip. It's that good. The donut was not fluffy but still good. Same texture with the malasadas. But the ambiance of the store was so 1930. I bet there is not much changed from the time they were open. Worth the visit when you are at the upper country area.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
You go here for the donuts pure and simple. Limited selection but every offering is worth eating. Freshly made on premises each morning they sell out of almost everything before they close at 1:00 pm. We made four trips before we were able to secure a donut. Twice arriving right before they closed before we figured out that one o'clock was just to late and then once on a Wednesday when they are also closed. Check it out along with the shops in Makawao. Worth the drive from wherever you are on the island. If you are in Paia, just head east and up Baldwin Ave. and you will be there in under 20 minutes.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
If you are going to order a lot I recommend placing an order. They can run out of items by 10:00 am. My favorite is the cream puff and stick donuts. The cream puff is delicious and the stick donuts are sinful that glaze on the donut has a tropical flavor. You will not be disappointed! I've been coming here for decades!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice quick bite to grab while strolling through the streets or driving to Hana (lol). I'd say that the best thing to do is heat it up slightly and these will melt off the stick and into your mouth.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Authentic, old, darkly lit and not at all typical of a world class bakery....but it's all fresh and so good. Every day, they start baking long before sunrise~ {mahalo}! Some days, the line forms down Baldwin Ave well before the doors open at 7am. But no worries, it's Worth it, every time.
google avatar

Christina Z.

Yelp
Family run bakery in Makawao - recommend getting there early so you can get your choice of their freshly baked donuts and malasadas. We picked up goodies soon after they opened on our way from Kula before driving the road to Hana and were glad we had these for both breakfast and for snacks on the road. The stick donuts were the winner - so fluffy, lightly glazed, and easy to eat in the car! The guava malasada was tasty - the guava filling was packed with flavor whereas the plain malasada was average. Overall, glad we stopped by while driving down from the upcountry - highly recommend the stick donuts!
google avatar

Yelp
Best of the best! If you know you know! We love the donuts on a stick but there is not one item you shouldn't try!

Yelp
My wife and I signed up for the Maui Sunriders Bike tour and on the way up the volcano, we saw the long line to get in this place! That's how we knew we had to stop by on the trip down. We got where around 11:45am and and there wasn't a lot of food left on the shelves! We did snag a stick donut and guava malasadas. The stick donut had a thicker consistency and texture with the dough tasting kinda like sweet bread which was good. The guava malasadas was unique and the filling was not too sweat and had enough tart to cut through the sweet bun. Our tour guide even told us that even when he was growing up as a kid in Paia, lines were already forming every morning in the bakery so that's how you know they've been consistently doing it right for the last 100 years!

Kenzie G.

Yelp
Local bakery in a small town. We got there fairly late in the day so they didn't have much left but what we did have, the vanilla ana chocolate malasadas. Wow yum, delicious. Amazing.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Nice stop on the way to Hana Highway in a cute little town. We had the doughnuts and malasadas on sticks. So we are talking about mini doughnuts that are pretty fresh, food on sticks, on Maui, and ridiculously cheap. Superb. If you are coming from the south side or west side of the island it is barely out of the way if you are going to either Hana or Haleakala. It is well worth the detour.

Yelp
I arrived about 8:15 on a Monday morning. When I entered the bakery line, it seemed the racks along the line to get to the counter, only had a few items, after I attacked my first round of goodies from the counter, I went in line a second time, more items were added to the racks along the line,I am not sure, but it seemed to be day old packaged stick donuts. you can also find pies and related bread items. The stick donuts, sorta like donut holes, but with a thicker crust, yet the center is like a classic yeast donut. Best eaten that day, overnight they are not as good. Highly recommended. I also tried the cream puff and cocoa puff. The egg custard filling was delicious, but after eating the cocoa puff, I will choose the cocoa puff over the cream puff. Be careful not to inhale the powdered sugar! Finally the guava malasadas, these are more bread like and a little lighter then other malasadas but still delicious. The service was quick and they were nice and put together my order. There is a small parking lot next to the building.
google avatar

Kathy U.

Yelp
Same friend who blessed me with mochi also blessed me with donut sticks from Komoda Bakery today! Fresh donut sticks, one of their specialties. The donut is a fried yeast donut and is somehow made so you can break off sections to eat. So it's easy to share (if you are willing!). Fresh and tender with an awesome texture and bite, visit this store/bakery if you are in Makawao. Be sure to eat one there, but this is a good item to bring home to Oahu or other islands to share if you can deliver it that same day so the donuts are fresh!

Helen N.

Yelp
The turnover I bought had almost no filling. Otherwise it was okay. I ate one bite of malasada and got a stomach ache. The cashier double charged me and when I questioned it, she got very defensive and told me that if I had a day like her, I would make mistakes like that too. At no point did she apologize for overcharging me nearly $17. Very, very poor customer service skills
google avatar

Vina P.

Yelp
Dear aunties- The donuts were yummy but I bet you guys can also make ono nishime, gobo, namasu, and sushi. Please share more of your talent and turn that space into an okazuya!

Yelp
The pastries are great. If based on that alone...I would've given it a 5. I believe that every review should be written with good intentions on passing on the truth about a business. I've been to places where mishaps occurred and it's understandable that employees make mistakes or have "off" days but it's been nearly 1 month since our trip here and I still get upset thinking about what happened. Let me make it clear that I am born and raised on Oahu, Hawaii. My mother-in-law's entire family is from Maui and some still reside there. I know what it means to serve customers with aloha and respect. Our family loves to support local businesses (and have even owned local businesses ourselves) which is why it's so disheartening to have to share something negative about a small business here in Hawaii. I've been here before prior to this trip. I knew we had to get here early to get the good stuff and that although it's out of the way, it's well worth the drive. Their pastries have always been spot on so much, that we specifically came here to buy butter dinner rolls for two New Years parties we would be hosting/going to because we wanted to share the mouth watering rolls with our family. My friend and her son have never tried it but we're excited based on how highly I spoke of it. My husband also wanted to get the donuts on a stick because he hadn't had those before and I'm always down for a good donut! Knowing their popularity, we booked the earliest flight which meant getting ourselves and our infant to the airport by 6am. We made this our first stop around 10:30am after flying in from Honolulu. We intended to get here by 9/9:20am but there was a major delay at the rental car center. When we arrived, there were at least two other tourist families and one local here who were looking at the display case which by then, was nearly empty as to be expected. Our main priority were the dinner rolls so my husband, friend, her son and myself split up to find any bag they had left. No luck. We rushed to the counter where an older lady (short hair with glasses) was ringing someone else up. When that customer left, the worker did not acknowledge us until about 1 min later when I initiated the conversation with a "Hi!" She didn't greet me back. Instead she said "Yes" in a very short and unfriendly manner. At that moment, I noticed two bags of dinner rolls in the back left counter. With excitement I asked "Oh! Could we get those two bags of rolls?" "No." *Silence* she just stood there and stared at us. She was so short with us that we honestly thought she was making a joke. Normally, when you ask for something and the employee declines you, they take the time to explain why not or they offer an alternative option. In this case, she stood there as it we were wasting her time. Caught off guard and a but flustered, I asked "wait, are you serious? Or joking? I'm sorry, I can't tell." "Yes." *Silence* My husband and I both tried to ask if there were more in the back or anywhere else because we couldn't find any. She shouted sounding very annoyed while gesturing rudely with her arms wide open "well, do you see any?!" We paused and overheard one of the tourist families next to us asking the other worker "Do you have any of these stick donuts without the cinnamon sugar? We were just looking for the glazed." The worker responds in the same manner "Do you see any glazed?!" Then the worker cocked their head at them as if they should know better. Back to the lady helping us, she walks away from us without a word and goes onto the sales floor (somewhere in the back corner of the store), holds a bag of dinner rolls up in the air and yells in a condescending tone "There is one RIGHT HERE!" Still trying to keep our cool to not make a scene in front of our friend's son, we said "ok thank you, we'll take that one." She comes back to where we are and asks "well, do you want it or not?" I repeated that yes, we will take it. On our way out, I overheard a new group of tourist walking in as one asked, "I wonder if they still have those donuts." I was so tempted to warn them not to go in but still being upset, I thought it best to keep my thoughts to myself. What happened wasn't an accident. It wasn't one person having one bad day because BOTH workers treated ALL of the customers present in this same manner. It was disgusting and degrading. We were torn on whether or not to purchase anything at all but it costed us more to get there when you consider airfare, time and gas so we did end up purchasing what we originally planned which were the rolls and some donuts they had left. We spent about $50. Our family did enjoy the rolls but will any of us go back? Probably not. If the owner would like more info on who the workers were, feel free to reach out to me via Yelp. I'd be happy to speak to you about this so you can address it with those responsible.

Yelp
Another s pot in Maui that was recommended to me by a friend who lives in Oahu and she remembers going to Komoda bakery over 20 years ago. She said "Annie you must go to the cream puff bakery!". Well, Komoda is the cream puff bakery. They are known for that and their malasadas. We came here early around 9am and already a short line had formed inside. MUST TRYS: - Guava Malasada - Donut on a stick - Malasada on a stick - Cream puffs That was my order, had half for breakfast and half for lunch with my hubby. Afterwards we doubled back around and found a long line formed all the way outside the shop. This place is popular so go early. Not much street parking either. Recommended stop in Maui.

Yelp
Best Malasadas in Maui. This is a must stop in Makawao, the history in the town is worth the trip.

Yelp
Didn't get a chance to try this because they are closed until late April, just a heads up. Will have to check it out next time we are on Maui.

Yelp
We made it a point to stop in before our long journey on the Road to Hana. The guava malasadas were the best of the bunch, but still A-ok. The stick donut is kinda gimmicky and essentially mini glazed donuts on a stick. We also got two of each of the chocolate and vanilla cream donuts. The chocolate was weak, vanilla much better. They're pretty filling: we got two of each and were only able to finish one. They also don't keep in a hot car on a 12 hour round trip drive...duh. For the cream filled: Buy what you'll eat right then and there. We also got the last coconut pie. It tastes like a Mounds bar, minus the chocolate. $10 minimum for credit card transactions. Glad we were able to try these, but this is probably a one and done stop for us.

Yelp
This is a no-nonsense kind of bakery. We would have totally passed it had our Bike Maui tour guide not shouted it out to us on the way up the Haleakala. He also said "and the Guava Malasada are the best!" SPOILER ALERT: HE WAS NOT WRONG!! We strolled in around 11:45am and you could tell the place was already picked clean. Again, no nonsense, so if you're looking or a place that's aesthetically pleasing or "vibey" then this is not the place. There isn't even signage outside. You could walk right past this place. HOWEVER. If you're looking for the best malasada experience of you're dang life, get in line!!! I wish I could take a whole bucket of guava malasada back with me to Atlanta. The malasada on the stick was delicious (fluffy, good texture, nice amount of sweet) but the GUAVA MALASADA WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. You could put me in a dang SHACK with that thing and I'd give it five stars. It was unreal.

Yelp
This place met the malasadas craving that the hubby and I were having. You had to go through this labyrinth in the bake shop to get to the counter. They had donuts, a few malasadas, and some turnovers. I enjoyed the guava malasada and the sugar and cinnamon was the hubby's favorite. I also like the malasada stick which is great for sharing. It's no Leonard's bakery, but we were grateful to have found it. There is street parking outside.

Yelp
Always happy to support Komoda Bakery! Get there early after it opens to get the largest variety or selection of bakery goods. I have gotten to Komodas in the late morning and most of the popular items were already sold out and then it became a buying frenzy to get whatever was left on the shelf. Like all businesses, they are not immune to inflation so expect higher prices at checkout.

Yelp
We love Komoda Bakery and every time we went to Maui, that would be our first stop! Unfortunately we haven't been to Maui since 2009, but a dear Maui friend came to Oahu and surprised us with a box of Komoda bakery goodies!! YUM!! The quality is THEE BEST!! The dough is more cake like and dense rather than light and airy. Love the Komoda Bakery tape they seal the box with! You don't see that anymore! Thank you Komoda Bakery!

Yelp
So worth!!! To be honest, I was a little hesitant and was like how good could these donuts really be BUT I was pleasantly impressed. We got a whole Box of the Stick Donut and the Malasada Sticks for our drive to Hana. At first I didn't think they would be soft or last all day but BOY did these Sticks bring me NOURISHMENT throughout hana. It is soooo soft the dough so fluffy. And the glaze is just right. Not too thick or icy that it starts making you feel bad for eating sugar. It just seep right into the fluffy dough. Definitely recommend the Stick Donut.

Yelp
We stopped by on our way down from Haleakala - it was the perfect time around 9am - no line and a ton of goodies to pick from! We ordered a bunch of different treats but the best ones had to be the stick donuts, long johns, and malasada stick. If you don't get anything else, you gotta at least try those three. So tasty! The donuts are so fluffy and not too sweet. Honestly, you can probably have a whole stick of donuts to yourself. My only regret was not buying more! At the glass case, you can order a bunch of baked goods individually, but if you want to buy in bulk, you can also buy them prepackaged on the other side of the store, while you walk through the line. They were limiting the number of people in the store when I went because of Covid precautions - not sure if that's still the case. Definitely go early because they sell out quickly. We had friends go around noon or 1pm and they said there were no more donuts! A travesty! The selection was also sparse by noon.

Yelp
My visit to T Komoda was honestly pretty underwhelming. I found this bakery on yelp and thought it would be a fun place to check out and pick up some pastries. When I came, they were closed for an extended Thanksgiving holiday - but none of their socials were updated with this. I drove 30 minutes from where I was staying (Kihei) so it was really disappointing that it was closed. Nevertheless, I came back a week later when they were open at 11AM and they were almost sold out of everything already. I was able to get a guava malasada and a malasada on a stick. Something I don't like is that their pastries are pre-packaged in plastic bags and each bag has different quantities. When I arrived, none of the donuts were individually packaged but I had to buy bags of 4-6 which was too much for me. The guava malasada itself was delicious and the guava flavor was good. But the malasada was pretty small and the donut on the stick was average. Pastries are about $2-3 each, which is pretty expensive given how small they were.
