Oakland Tropical Cocktail Bar and Steakhouse Palmetto Is Closing After Three Years | Eater SF

"Located adjacent to Palmetto, the Kon-Tiki Room is mentioned as also being set to close with the same last day of October 29, though it is also described as the co-owner’s other business and is noted to be set to celebrate its sixth anniversary; Aivaliotis says he will help employees find work at the Kon-Tiki or elsewhere as the restaurant winds down." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Great spot, came in for drinks only, no food. The painkiller was great, wife has a non-alcoholic spritzer drink named Scarlet Lagoon that had her wishing they were available everywhere we went. Pro tip: Happy hour! M-Thu 4-6 / $10 value🧉🍹 Clean and well maintained, new everything and well maintained. Bathrooms are clean, too. Social media vibe spot.

Google
i had a fab time at kon tiki for a belated birthday celebration recently. the conchita shrimp and fish tacos were so delicious and you MUST get the cheese fries with pico and salsa verde…sooo yummy! (we ordered 2 servings and i still wanted more) my favorite drink was the island inferno, very refreshing and the perfect spicy kick in a fun optional tiki mug! looking forward to going back to this cool spot in KC very soon 🌺💥🌮🍹

Google
What a beautiful place filled with color, great service and tasty drinks. We just happened upon this place and were absolutely delighted with the experience. I am a little obsessed with The Golden Hour cocktail. Delicious! Cannot wait to come back.

Google
We went to Kon Tiki because my husband likes Tiki bars and a good Tiki drink. I wish I could whole-heartedly recommend this Tiki Bar but alas, I cannot. It lacks the tiki knickknacks and the vibe feels contrived. Our service was good, but I do have an issue with the lack of pricing on the menu. I understand it’s fairly new and things are still being worked out. I’d have to see better reviews down the line before I would come back again.

Google
This is a Tiki bar that struggles with its ID. The music that was playing was modern pop that did not fit a Tiki theme. The Mai Tai was ok. I'm a Mai Tai fan, and it's what I judge all Tiki Bars by. They use Probitas Rum. The Golden Hour was a better drink..

Google
ugh don’t miss out on this place !!! i went with my boyfriend and we had so much fun chatting, drinking and the food was AMAZING. i can’t even complain about the price of the taco because it was genuinely so delicious hahaha. the drinks were very good and the environment was colorful, fun and the perfect balance of lively and calm. our waitress was so sweet and personable, checked on us multiple times through the night but never a bother. can’t wait to come again !!!

Ordered the Painkiller and the Sirens song. Both were amazing. This tiki bar is really nice !

Google
New restaurant, opened six weeks ago. Food is wonderful, lots of cool drinks. Excellent atmosphere with cool decor and very unique place to be. I will definitely be coming back here. Very simple menu tacos and fries, open late! Staff was amazing. I recommend this place 100%

Yelp
Such a fun tiki bar!! They have a great selection of strong themed cocktails. Everything was full of flavor and liquor. The vibes were fun. Our server and bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Prices were a little high

Yelp
This was a fun spot to drop in for a cocktail before dinner on a weekend! I didn't love my drink, it was pretty sugary, and the service was just fine. The ambiance was cool and unique as well. I'd go back for a pre-dinner drink again or a holiday party.
google avatar

Yelp
The drinks were good and the service was fine, but the atmosphere was... Odd. Granted this was after 10 PM on the Saturday night, but whatever movie was streaming on the TVs was beyond weird in the sense that it was clearly some kind of art house, indie drama, but frankly made me uncomfortable to look at. I'll just say... It was explicit in ways that bordered on inappropriate and underage, so unfortunately, this is how I will now forever. Remember this bar.

Yelp
This is one of my fav spots in the area to grab a drink. The attached taco joint is also DELICIOUS so that's a plus! I like that it's dim and moody, too. The service is always great, the drinks are yummy and there is plenty of seating. We just keep coming back. Get the spicy marg

Yelp
One of my favorite post dinner drink spots. The Golden Hour is by far my favorite drink to order. Light and flavorful - and strong. Kon Tiki managed to curate a space in the middle of the Midwest that transports you to the coastal vibes of Hawaii. I love that they usually have the OG Godzilla movies playing, great conversation starter and just overall an awesome touch of nostalgia. I also love that they have collectable cups for purchase, I love a good funky souvenir cup! Must check out if you're visiting from out of town, or even just a local.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink on a Saturday afternoon and it was delightful! We sat at the bar and had attentive service and great drinks! We tried the mai tai, the zombie, and the pain killer. All were delicious and served in cute tiki glasses available for purchase! The vibe itself was tiki room mid century modern realness and we were here for it! 10/10 would highly recommend!

Yelp
Look, I'll be real honest me and my guy really aren't big fans of tiki cocktails. We came for a dear friends birthday celebration and she loves a good tiki cocktails. The vibes are definitely on par for a tiki bar...but everything felt a little too perfect for a tiki bar. It was kinda like Tiki Bar by Pottery Barn almost (nothing against it but yea..), but that's just men. Anyway....the cocktails were very strong and good, but for the non tiki drink folks not our cup of tea. The Island Inferno was delightfully spicy and fun and well, if you want strong...you can't go wrong with a Pain Killer. Only downside was food...and not so much a downside as you can order from Conchita Tacos. We ended up ordering Chips & Salsa (totopos?), Bistek Quesadilla, and Al Pastor (instead of Carne Asada) Fries. Overall...decent. Look I wish I could say good, but I've been very spoiled growing up in SoCal and having an amazing array of delicious Mexican food. (Personal opinion - you don't need to elevate street tacos...they are amazing because they are NOT elevated) That and I've always been of the opinion that Carne Asada (or any other protein) fries do not need to use seasoned fries because all the toppings provide enough flavor that you don't need seasoned fries. It's way too much salt for me (but that's just me) Look was a fun birthday celebration with friends, and I know they loved the tiki cocktails - but to honest if it was up to me and boyfriend, we probably won't be back. Not because it's not good, but it's just not for us. If you like tiki cocktails and elevated tacos (I'll never understand the need for this) then it's a good spot!

Yelp
Immediately fell in love with this bar! The cocktails are creative & tasteful; generally not too sweet. The atmosphere is so fun. We went on a Tuesday night when just a few tables were filled & it didn't feel awkward at all.

Yelp
When Tiki Cat closed in Westport, KC was left with a tiki bar sized hole in her heart that Kon Tiki has arrived to try and fill. I'd been waiting and waiting to try this place as it opened when I was pregnant and I really didn't want to go and just get a mocktail, though I'm 100% certain their talented bar staff could whip one up for you! We ended up here on my birthday in December. I initially wanted our group to meet at Swordfish Tom's, but with the holidays the wait was LONG there so my mom brain somehow figured to check and see how close Kon Tiki was to our current location and luck was in our favor as it was a short walk away. We walked over, there was no wait, and despite it being busy, we were able to snag a table for our party of six. I would describe the ambiance here as modern tiki. It's clean, vibrant, and fun. The cocktails are equally nice and definitely hit the spot for a tropical getaway while it's winter in KC. Overall I really enjoyed my time here. I'm still honestly mourning Tiki Cat, despite it being closed for going on five years, there was something magical about that place, but for now Kon Tiki does a fine job, and I'm mighty glad they're here.

Yelp
I made a reservation to Kon Tiki for a very large group on a Saturday night, and the process was super easy. They were very accommodating and prepared for our arrival. All of us got various drinks and everyone was enjoying what they got. I ordered the Pele Paloma and really enjoyed it-- it's definitely a bang for your buck. The decor and vibes of this place makes it so fun and I definitely want to come back! Also their music choices were amazing :)
google avatar

Yelp
This place was sooo CUTE!!! We rate this place 12/10! It was absolutely delicious.. food was great & fresh..drinks were strong! The place was beautiful all around! The waiter was amazing & we had a blast overall. We are definitely coming back! Everyone must come!

Yelp
All I can say is that I wish I lived closer so I could go more often. Literally nothing I didn't like about this place. Drinks are exceptionally clean tasting like every one is made with a freshly opened bottle of whatever is needed. I like that they do not have sports on the televisions in here. Hold on, I like sports but in here it would be wrong. It would take away from the whole tiki bar experience. If you don't believe me, go in sometime and try to imagine it with a bunch of people screaming about their team. Definitely a great spot to hang out.
google avatar

Yelp
OMG if you're looking for good food, good drinks, and a cute vibe this is the perfect spot! We came here after a night at the wheel and I don't think he could've gotten better than this. I believe we didn't have to pay for parking because it was free at this time, but keep in mind that you may have to pay for parking. There are so many opportunities to take cute pictures starting from the outside of bar all the way to when you're at your seat. There are two different sides, one for drinks and one for food, but you can order food while at the bar area. The staff were super friendly and accommodating to us even with 10 minutes left to order food before they close for the day. The bathrooms are stunning and you probably spend more time in there than you need to simply because you'd want to get those pictures and while you can, lol. There are tacos, and I believe quesadillas, but the Carne Asada fries were fire! There are a ton of drink items where you can purchase the cute cups, and there are also mocktail options, which is amazing. If this place is not on your list, please add it ASAP!

Yelp
I enjoyed our quick stop at Kon Tiki. The space is dark and has really fun tiki bar atmosphere. We stopped in on a late Sunday afternoon and the bar was not busy yet. I had the Siren's song cocktail and really enjoyed it. It was sweet but not overly sweet. I also ordered an Al pastor taco from Conchita tacos. The taco was good but small for the price. Conchita is connected to Kon Tiki and we ordered their food on the tiki bar side. I am already planning to bring some friends in and would recommend to anyone that enjoyed tiki bars!

Yelp
We came to The Crossroads to enjoy our wedding anniversary by attending the April First Friday. We got to the area a bit early and the weather was pretty miserable so we decided to duck in to Kon Tiki for some liquid courage before braving the elements and the many blocks of walking. This place was just what we needed. With dim interior lighting and Polynesian Island decor, the mood was just the antithesis to the dreary weather outside. I started with a Painkiller - a fruity and potent concoction of Rum and juices and creams. My wife had a N/A coffee beverage Cafe Lani - coffee with coconut cream. Both were wonderful. While the vibe and the product were excellent, what sealed the deal on a glowing 5 stars was our bartender Grant. Bartenders and waiters are the frontline representatives of any establishment and can make or break an experience and Kon Tiki has a great brand ambassador. Charming, welcoming, funny and a great conversationalist, Grant delivered amazing customer service and caused us to prolong our stay by two more drinks! That's the kind of "plus selling" that i can appreciate. Kon Tiki will now be my first stop for beverages when in the area and if Grant is working,it might be our only stop.

Yelp
A fun, unique tiki bar with delicious drinks -- though they come with quite the price tag. It was packed on a Saturday night, as expected at most bars and restaurants, but the cocktail server was on top of it and provided excellent service. Good vibes and music for a night out!
google avatar

Yelp
Kon Tiki is a total vibe! I'd go back just for the photo ops alone, but the tiki-themed drinks were worth every penny. For $13-16, you get a pretty generous drink that's crafted to perfection. Our server was fantastic--super energetic, patient, and friendly, which added to the whole experience. Bonus: you can order tacos or loaded fries from the Mexican restaurant next door without even leaving your seat! We tried the loaded fries--they were decent, though a bit salty--but honestly, we weren't there for the fries. They also had an $8 happy hour while we were there, but we didn't dive in this time. Can't wait to return for round two at this tropical gem!

Yelp
I went with my husband and we sat up at the bar. The space was pretty empty and huge. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and we really enjoyed chatting with him. The ambience of the space was lacking in tiki kitchiness. The drinks were ok, but not my favorite. We probably won't be returning, but it wasn't a bad experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiki cocktails in adult sized cups hit the spot! Great flavors and options for everyone. Plenty of room for our Party of 8! Lovely staff had great recommendations for our crew. The art in the bathroom wait hall is gorgeous. Had some loaded fries, some chips and dip and a few rounds of bevies. Great spot!!

Yelp
Kon Tiki is, you guessed it, a tiki bar and a unique addition to the crossroads. The ambiance and drinks did not disappoint. Overall, a fun spot to add some variety to your weekend lineup.

Yelp
Ok first things first, the vibes here are just right. Cute decor and dim lighting, perfect for a date night. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 4 pm. You seat yourself and someone will come by for your order. My husband and I ordered: Pina colada (4/5): this was light take in a pina colada. It tastes like coconut but it's not milky. Our drink tasted just like juice. I wonder if they forgot the rum, nonetheless it was tasty. Pain Killer (5/5): I ordered this as a non alcoholic drink and it was delicious. Heavier compared to the pina colada, much more creamy. Al Pastor taco (3.5/5): this taco was from Conchinita, next door. For $4.50 this was a small taco and it was cold when it arrived. The tortilla was homemade, pork was well-seasoned and there was plenty of diced pineapples. It came with a side of salsa verde, which was the best part. This bar is on the pricier side, but worth a visit for your tiki date night. The taco was overpriced so I would skip that next time.

Yelp
We were visiting Kansas City from out of town and went here for lunch and drinks on Saturday afternoon since it was walking distance from our hotel. I'm so glad we did, because we loved everything about it! The decorations and atmosphere were fun and the service was very good. We tried a bunch of food (quesadilla, tacos, and some sides) - everything was delicious! Our drinks were all amazing too, especially the Road to Hana!
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Loved this place and the super friendly bartenders! Great drinks and with happy hour they are cheap and strong! I got a painkiller and a sirens song-both amazing. 2 drinks was $24 and I left with a buzz. Super cool tiki decor with old school cartoons playing on the tvs. The partner with the taco place next-door so you are able to order food if you want. Definitely check out happy hour super worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Come on down, it's fun for at least one visit. Cute location, fun decorations, nice people, good drinks. The wife and I came in and found ourselves a seat. It did look like a few spots were reserved for larger groups so call ahead if you are planning to come with a group. We ordered a couple of drinks that tasted like a tiki drink should. If you are a time nerd, then it may not be 100% the recipe or rum choice you would have at your home bar....but it was close enough for a corporate bar. Staff were nice and all dressed in leopard print....ie Betty Page. The wife then ordered a couple of tacos from the separate taco shop that were delivered to the table. Tacos were a touch salty, the better to increase your drink purchases I'm sure. We ordered a second round and had a great time people watching and catching up after a long week at work. Tiki is about escapism, and absurd amounts of ingredients needed to make a drink.....this was that. Had a nice time and may consider coming back...maybe with another couple. The only real negatives are that it's a corporate bar feel. It's not a dive bar if that's what you want. It's not the old beloved Tiki Cat that closed a few years back. It's a tiki bar that comes across like it's owned by a food group, not by a dude or a chick that's quirky. Also, just a heads up...they will bring you the card reader set to a 20% tip. If you want to tip less, you are going to have to sit there and type it in while the dude stares at you while holding the device. So let your ability to withstand social embarrassment be your guide.
google avatar

Ivani B.

Yelp
What a great place! I didn't think this place was going to be much and assumed they would have cheesy half done decor, but they are really legit. The place is brand new so it's hard to get in, make sure that you make a reservation. On one side they have a taco restaurant and then on the other side, they have the tiki bar. All of their staff is friendly helping you choose your drinks except for the man at the front door. He isn't very pleasant. Their drinks are very exotic with bold flavors and stepping in this places makes you feel like you are on vacation but you are actually STILL in Kansas City.
google avatar

AJ P.

Yelp
Late night downtown Kansas City looking for a great spot for you and your crew to chill and get drinks than look no further than Kon Tiki. Love the atmosphere of Hawaiian decor and all the drinks cups are similar in design. I enjoyed the drinks that I chose from their menu. They had a wide variety of drinks to choose from. I will say the lighting in the bar could be a little bit brighter but that's my preference. I enjoyed my time while there and liked the photo area of the bar as well.
google avatar

Yesenia M.

Yelp
First time checking out the bar and I really loved it! The entire bar makes you feel like you've landed in a tropical island. The bar has a dark and moody ambiance that sets the tone for a good night's drink with the girls or perhaps a date night. The drinks were served in tiki mugs and the drinks were really good and on the stronger side. The service was really great; we walked in on a busy Friday night with no reservations, and the host allowed us to be seated before their next reservation arrived. With that being said I do recommend getting a reservation, especially heading into the weekend.

Yelp
This place is so cool! Really great atmosphere and the drinks are incredible! A bit pricey but definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Had the pleasure of christening the Lava Lounge at Kon Tiki tonight. It's my son's 21st birthday so we wanted to do something special. What a great vibe. Awesome (and powerful) cocktails, with tacos catered in from Conchita which is right next door. Thank you for helping make his birthday a memorable one!
google avatar

Yelp
Heard about this place opening up and got an invite to the opening. Love the inside vibe and the drinks are strong and tasty!

Yelp
Loved KonTiki. Drinks were great and the atmosphere is very fun. Enjoyed the whole experience.

Yelp
4.6 OOOHHHhhhhhhhh ! Hell yes ! I like it, a lot. Tiki is hard to do to make it fit in and the menu here tweaked a few cocktails and changed up some norms in a great way in my opinion. Tiki-ish mid-modern island-ish decor that is FAB af. The attached taqueria adds a great twist and munchies to help slow down some fine made navy strong drinks. Great Job Here
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
I have been twice this month and it was fantastic. Every drink was made with precision and care, and you can tell the team is proud of what they make. The retro movies and fun decor make you feel like you aren't in the midwest, which is the best. Love the staff's leopard shirts, love how personable and kind everyone is, and LOVE the quesadillas from the little taco shop next door.

The S.

Yelp
Kon Tiki is always a good time and fantastic drinks! Great location and hours and hospitality. Megan and Geneva are the literal best!
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
The decor and overall atmosphere are super fun. Feel like you're in a tiki taco bar in a surf town in Hawaii. SO cute. Music is always just right. Drinks are fantastic. Never too sugary/sweet. You can tell a lot of love and care went into the drink menu (the custom cups are also 10/10 wish I had 2 of each at home). Fresh, simple ingredients. Delicious tacos. If you're in KC you have to make the trip and give them a try. Our new go to!
google avatar

Paige M.

Yelp
I really dug the vibe in here: it was so well decorated and the aesthetic was great. Didn't get food, but did get the pain killer drink (big mistake). If you're looking to get knocked on your ass-- try! If you want something that tastes good, steer far away. I feel confident their other drinks are better though, as it was pretty busy, and there were many classics on the menu. Waitress did say they pour pretty heavy!
google avatar

Robyn R.

Yelp
Amazing drinks, super clean, loved the vibe AND great service! Can't wait to return and will bring friends!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
A bit soulless - the drinks were trying so hard to be 'reinventions' of classic drinks that they really just lost their way. I'm not one to discourage anyone from attempting to create new takes on classic libations but these were just offensive. The environment is nice but the music - can we place have TIKI music in the TIKI bar? It was just us - in the entire place and they weren't allowed to change the terrible music. I hope this place finds their way or at least finds a new beverage director so that this aggressively mid place can turn things around.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
Kon Tiki is such a cute bar! I came here with my friends and all of us were very impressed. The decor will transport you to a tropical vacation outside of KC. The drinks were so well made. I tried the pele paloma. I would highly recommend this drink. It is pretty busy so I would suggest making a reservation.
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
It's been YEARS since I posted a review on Yelp (long time lurker... ha), but this spot is worthy of breaking that streak. As an LA native, very few establishments in Kansas City remind me of places I went in my past life. I love a theme, and this little gem is exactly what it's supposed to be. The design and ambiance really nail the festive/cozy/kitchsy aesthetic crucial for pulling off a tiki bar thanks to giant tropical plants, whimsical decor, and flawlessly executed mood lighting. The staff is super friendly and accommodating, the drinks feel like a vacation, and the food is fab. I regulary crave their fries at the most random times. 10/10 for a guaranteed delightful vibe... no matter the day, company, or occasion.

Bianca G.

Yelp
Popped in for a drink as I was walking around the area visiting from out of town. The decor and the overall ambiance was cool and inviting- lots of interesting decor and dim red lighting. The cocktails I tried were very tasty.
google avatar

GW F.

Yelp
I love that we have a Tiki bar in the area. The drinks are fantastic. Too many times at these sort of places the drinks taste like over sweetened Hawaiian Punch with alcohol. Not here! The drinks were well balanced with complexity that was a joy. About $15 a drink but well worth it. No food but you can order tacos from their place next door. To the owners, my only complaints are superficial. Lighting was a little too dim. I couldn't enjoy the decor fully or get a good look at my drinks because of it. I was at the bar and it may have dimmer there than on the floor. Also, music. Modern music is fine but if you're going for a retro tiki bar feel you need some older lounge / tiki music playing every few songs. For suggestions look up Retro Cocktail Hour on KPR for their play lists. I will be back.

Meagan L.

Yelp
First time in. The service was great. Very friendly staff. The ambiance was cool but the music was weird for it being a tiki bar. Ruined the vibe. The food on the other hand was overpriced and awful. We ordered a $10 quesadilla thinking it would be enough for two to have a piece or two but received a fold over taco. Not even big enough to cut into pieces. Basically the size of the single taco I ordered. $4.50 for that. These were both ordered as Al Pastor and were bland and cold. You know it's cold when the cheese is already hard and you can taste cold jelly grease on the taco meat. Just not good all around. Make me so sad because I love a good tiki bar and I can walk here.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Super-cool ambiance and relaxed vibe. The interior has some great touches like hand-carved poles at the bar and spicey Betty Page pics throughout. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Peyton B.

Yelp
had a great time there with my best friend and boyfriend. the drinks were in super cute glasses, a little pricey though. Atmosphere was so pretty and calm. I got the Hawaii-5-0 and I recommend! Bar tenders was very nice and helpful

Yelp
The drinks were good and we loved the tacos. Tiki drinks + Tacos = We will definitely go back. The selfie area was found too.

Yelp
We tried this place yesterday and loved it! We hung out at the bar during the day and had some drinks and food from Conchita. Absolutely recommend. The drinks were great, food delicious and service amazing! We had a great time!

Adrienne B.

Yelp
We loved our experience! The vibe was great and the drinks were even better! I also loved the large booths that make it easy to accommodate larger groups.
