Chinese Take-Out Restaurant Kong’s Kitchen Opening Next to Smith’s Olde Bar - Eater Atlanta

"Kong’s Kitchen, a Chinese take-out and delivery-only restaurant, is opening at 1584 Piedmont Road next door to Smith’s Olde Bar in Piedmont Heights between the Ansley Park and Morningside neighborhoods, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. Owner Tung Lee Kong says Kong’s Kitchen will be open until 3 a.m. in order to capture the late-night crowds spilling out of area nightclubs and bars who are looking for food options other than McDonald’s. Expect traditional Chinese take-out dishes like the oft-ordered chicken or beef with broccoli but with a healthier twist. The restaurant plans to open in June." - Beth McKibben

Ordered general tso chicken, it’s wasn’t what I ordered since I got it delivered. The chicken tasted microwaved and bland. Definitely won’t be ordering from here again. Read the reviews before you door dash.

Google
I had an order of chicken wings and 2 shrimp rolls which came up to $20….the fried wings were disgustingly dry n plain no salt no seasoning….definitely not Chinese chicken wings. They were just plain nasty. And the shrimp rolls were not worth $7….sorry if you’re hungry eat cereal and pass on this place. It’s open late for nothing. And since when chicken wings come with salad?!?!?!

Shellz Shellz

Google
Oh my goodness! This food was absolutely terrible. Please read the reviews before you eat here. The chicken corn soup has to be the worst soup I’ve ever had in my life. Spring rolls tasted like plastic. First time and last time.

At The working a long shift and being so tired and haven’t ate all day. I stumbled upon this restaurant because I’ve seen and heard that it was really good when I got there. My phone was about to die and you had to scan the menu the lady upfront a black lady upfront was eating her food. She was mad annoyed that I was asking questions because I’ve never been there before and She continued to complain about how she was so hungry and that she should’ve stayed in the back of the restaurant so that she was able to eat her food. Then she complained about her coworker and made it seem like it was my fault or problem, that she hadnt ate all day. I explained to her that I work in the service industry, so I completely understand, because I know what it feels like to work shifts and being on your feet all day and not being able to eat properly, but the fact that she had an attitude and just was this rude about the whole situation it threw me off and I decided not to eat there because of the customer service is that bad and you’re eating in customers face while complaining about how you haven’t had a moment to eat even though that’s what I’m trying to do order food because I’m hungry as well I don’t wanna eat at a place like that

Google
I don't do too many reviews but when it is great I do and when it is bad I do. Unfortunately I have to in this case because it was bad. Food is so so. So reason enough to never eat here again. But the BAD is the customer service. I will spare the details of my experience. Trust the reviews and go elsewhere.

Google
Y’all played in my face. I ordered the general tso and shrimp lo mien x2. Ordered my food when they opened at 5 pm and they gave me old food from the previous day. The lo mein had a smell and was soggy and old. Called them and was told they would have the manger call me back, which was a lie. Please do not eat here. You’ll be pissed.

Google
I ordered on Ubereats, my delivery was great and the food tastes good but when I called the restaurant trying to change the rice on my order the lady that answered the phone was extremely rude and not willing to help at all. She told me it was already made but of course the restaurant always has the white rice already made it could have easily been switched out for fried rice. I ordered the black pepper chicken dinner combo, it came with chicken and corn soup which that is the only thing that’s not good.

Lashae Brown

Google
This place is rude and the food is disgusting. I ordered 7 dishes and only received 3 of the items. The Chinese lady told me they were gonna send it out wit the delivery guy and another woman called me back saying it’s her business based out New York and she doesn’t know why the lady told me that. I’ll def get my money back but don’t order from here ever they are trash all across the board!!!!!!!

Yelp
So I am not a super big fan of Chinese food down here in GA (I'm from up north) so I am pretty critical on it when I do try. I was not upset at it though. It was pretty darn good actually. I'm not a fan of them not being open until 5:00 p.m., BUT I am a fan of them being open at 3:00 in the morning. Because sometimes you really need to have something in your stomach after you've been drinking lol! That in itself would make me go back because I know it'll be open late but I need them to! I got the general tso chicken and the cheese steak egg roll and spring roll. With egg drop soup. Something pretty basic, because if you mess up the basic things, then I don't know if I can trust you with other dishes. The chicken was decent, the egg rolls and spring rolls were really good. I got some type of teriyaki sauce for the egg rolls instead of regular duck sauce. It was good Chinese, not the best, but good. Would I go again, for sure.
google avatar

S B.

Yelp
Never seen General Tso chicken look like this. It absolutely has zero flavor, like none. A frozen bag from Walmart would have been better. Not sure how someone could even make something taste like nothing, but they managed to. Every review says the same thing! Utterly awful.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been patronizing this restaurant for years but had not ordered since I moved a little further away earlier this year. Tonight, I decided to take advantage of a buy one, get one free offer on Uber Eats. I ordered two chicken lo mein meals. Big mistake! There is barely any chicken and what is there doesn't taste fresh. Very disappointed and they have lot a customer.
google avatar

Darling M.

Yelp
I am so disappointed. I'm not sure who the chef is or if this restaurant is genuinely Asian owned. The beef broccoli looked so good!! And I got the large but....Beef and broccoli is NOT supposed to taste like that. The spring rolls? Crunchy but no taste. The dumplings I got? No taste. The rice? My 10 year old daughter can make better rice than this. Genuinely, so very disappointed, disgusted and angry because I bought a little of everything only to be starving and now $50 in the trash. I also got won ton soup which was not the worst, so I'm drowning the rice in it to get at least something in my stomach. Please do better bc this ain't it!!!

Hannah P.

Yelp
We ordered Kong's for delivery. The flavor was disgusting. The lo mein, sesame chicken and sichuan chicken were absolutely awful. The fried rice was barely passable. It was probably the worst Chinese I've ever had. We will never patron their establishment again.
google avatar

Tanya D.

Yelp
Negative one star. I ordered the szechuan chicken combo, and it was horrendous. The chicken tasted fake and rubbery. The fried rice was bland and a little mushy. The egg drop soup had the consistency of jello. I regret spending my money here, save your money
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Kongs kitchen is open late for all your hunger needs!! I loved the teriyaki wings. The lo mein was flavorful and I did enjoy it but I'm not a fan of the pork used. Everything else was very tasty and I will be back. Instead of pork I will try something else. I do recommend for Chinese if you're craving it!

Roya B.

Yelp
I've never left a review before. This was a 1 am order for me. It was gross. Didn't finish it, and trust me I don't have a high standard, I typically finish all types of food. The noodles were over cooked, chicken and beef texture were funky, not a lot of flavor.

Karen S.

Yelp
worst Chinese food I've ever had. ordered roast pork egg foo young & fried calamari. The calamari was over cooked & hard. The egg foo young was the most tasteless ever; the Hoison sauce was water & salty. if I had not been hungry thanks to traveling since 5 this morning & hadn't eaten anything, I would have sent this back & demanded a refund. I ordered through Uber Rats which had this listed with 4.6 stars - I don't know how that's possible. Absolutely horrible food. Will NEVER order from there again.
google avatar

Alysia W.

Yelp
I ordered here Friday night had it delivered via Postmates. The food was good! And the portions were pretty big, was able to eat 3xs! Would love to go sit & eat next time.
google avatar

Jaimie M.

Yelp
My friend and I ordered this late night as one of our only few options. 0 stars. The crab Rangoons? No. Crab. No Rangoon. All cream cheese. No flavor. My orange chicken was not even recognizable and was gelatinous. If you like jelly chicken, this is your spot. My friend got Mongolian beef, it was inedible. Covered in questionable sauce. No flavor. We were starving and intoxicated and we both had maybe 3 bites of each and threw it away. I never write reviews, but this place is horrible. Literally go anywhere else.
google avatar

Reuben D.

Yelp
very mid chinese food. crab rangoon is nothing but cream cheese, fried rice has no flavor. MID ASF
google avatar

Stevie J.

Yelp
Late night rushed order from $tevie J. on a Sunday night from Kong's....not bad got the following - cheesteak egg rolls - absolutely banging! must order - fried calamari - looks like onion rings & doesn't taste like calamari - crab rangoons - 6 of them, not terrible. relatively quick and efficient delivery at a moderate price. get the cheese steak egg rolls! - $tevie J.
google avatar

Chantell B.

Yelp
The food was very OK nothing over-the-top nothing was extremely bad about it. It was just for mediocre and the service was a little bit slow because it seems to be a little bit popular. At least it was when I went there and the way it set up inside is kind of awkward so there's not really anywhere to wait, but overall it was an OK experience I would go back because I am close by but nothing I will drive more than 15 minutes to go to.
google avatar

Pamela A.

Yelp
everything was horrible. The chicken & ribs taste really old things were over cooked too much breading on the chicken and the chick was dry and horrible. Ribs were tough too. The crab Rangoon's are greasy with nothing inside. They are horrid! We eat Chinese all the time, and this is the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. We actually took one bite, threw it out what a waste of money it's very expensive and it's horrible, don't order here
google avatar

Karenita B.

Yelp
For something open until 3am what can you expect? I've gone here twice and came back a third time because I had such great experiences, but my third visit left a lot to be desired for. I ordered the kung pao dinner. I got the egg drop soup that I always get and I totally love. The roll it comes with was pretty good. However, the kung pao chicken was inedible. The chicken was rubbery and stringy ... it left me wondering if it was even chicken. My husband tried and said this doesn't taste like chicken and spit it out like I did. Things I do like are ... Crab rangoons Chicken friend rice Chicken lo mein Egg drop soup

Lizzy S.

Yelp
kindest employees that i've ever met. amazing service. dainty inside with simplistic but stylish decor. did i mention they have amazing food.

Daniel K.

Yelp
I don't write bad reviews often, but here we go. Anyone who wrote a good review of this disgusting place must actually eat dog food for every meal. LISTEN TO THE OTHER BAD REVIEWS. I ignored because it was very short delivery time with door dash and I deeply regret it. I started with the veggie spring rolls, and the wrap was super gooey like it had been microwaved. No crunch whatsoever, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and moved on to my sesame chicken and.... I've had gas station food that was more appetizing. If I wanted a microwaved meal I would have bought one, the chicken had CLEARLY been microwaved (or I hope to god that's what's wrong with it) because it was the most tough, unsavory bite of food I've eaten in a very long time. I've never been more disappointed with a meal that I bought.

Yelp
I truly only like to share great reviews, but I feel the need to share this one.. Craving Chinese that was a walkable distance, I decided to try Kong's. The service at the counter was very friendly, and I regret I did not note her name, because she was helpful and pleasant to all the dashers and other like me who came to order/pickup for ourselves. That's where the pleasantry ends for me. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken, Vegetable Lo Mein, and Spring Rolls. Dishes and sauces were so extremely bland, completely lacking flavor, and the chicken didn't even smell or taste like chicken. I tried to season it up at home, but that odor and flavor was overpowering, I ended up tossing both entrees. I'm disappointed that I spent the money. I do not recommend the food here. Like I said, staff was great, but food is not. Bummed.
google avatar

Jameka B.

Yelp
Spring rolls was decent. The lo mein and braised wings was not my favorite. Wouldn't be ordering again. The taste ain't it.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Had a hankering for General Tso's - still have it. My take out arrived and the dish is completely inedible - dry, stringy chicken, over-fried, with little to no batter. Truly took 2 bites and threw it out. It's not even flavored like General Tso's with an almost reddish sauce that I'd swear was spiced with cayenne, no vinegar, soy, any other taste present. The only cooked well was the rice... nice job rice cooker. Skip it.

Yelp
I had no idea this place existed until tonight and I am so happy I found it. They have Steak & Cheese Egg Rolls which are my absolute favorite. I ordered the S&E Egg Rolls and a side of Pork Fried Rice. I ordered through Yelp as I was leaving the movie theatre. The process was very smooth and the cashier was very nice. The food was very good. You can definitely taste that this restaurant is about quality. The egg rolls were meaty and very flavorful, and the rice was good as well. I will def be back here again. P. S. If you order via Yelp the order is under your phone number and not your name.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
Wings are bomb...Lemon Pepper extra crispy wings with shrimp fried rice. Trust me...you will not be disappointed. Also, ask for the chili oil!

Yelp
Open till 3 AM - yes please! I was craving Chinese food late at night last week (I seem to always crave Chinese food when the weather starts to get cold for some reason..), but most of the Chinese food places around me were closed and I was about to resign myself to ordering some nuggets until I luckily stumbled upon Kong's Kitchen on UberEats. They were also ordering a BOGO on selected appetizers, so I ordered the eggrolls and the crispy chicken combo (with fried rice). Considering how late it was when I ordered, the food came very fast and was packaged very nicely. The combo came with your choice of soup (I got wonton) and an egg roll. I ended up having way too many egg rolls as the result of BOGO, but luckily they reheat very well in the air fryer! The egg rolls you get with the combo are different from the egg rolls as an appetizer though - the appetizer ones are a bit smaller and the wrapper they use are different (both were delicious though). The crispy chicken combo was delish, but my favorite was the fried rice - it did cost a little more than just getting plain rice, but I think it was worth it. I would definitely order here again just for the fried rice alone. Prices were pretty reasonable as well considering how much food I got - the portions were enough for dinner and lunch the next day (and the food reheated nicely in the microwave as well).

Yelp
After a long nap from my travels I used Door Dash to get my Chinese Christmas dinner. Not much left open so I had to try a new place. They packaged everything for delivery very well, especially the soup. The best part of the order was the pork fried dumplings. They were crispy and tasty. I had the egg drop soup, very rich and really good crisp noodles to top it with. The chicken fried rice had a good taste but I didn't like the sprouts that were added. Im not a fan of sprouts anyway and they're usually easy to pull off something but not so easy to pull out of this dish.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Need to know if you should order from Kong's? If you're drunk, starving, and everything else is closed, then yes. I had the sesame chicken with fried rice, spring rolls, and hot & sour soup. The fried rice had bean sprouts in it :-/ Everything tasted just a bit strange. I ate some that evening and doctored up the leftovers the next day. Not my first choice for Chinese food, but maybe I ordered the wrong stuff. In a pinch I might order again.
google avatar

Yarnell J.

Yelp
The lady behind the counter is rude as fuck. She doesn't speak to toy when you walk through the door. Nasty aditude, like we were bothering her. The killer part gospel playing and preaching in the background. I use to come alot when the Korean lady was taking orders. On top of that the health ratings is 86...
google avatar

Will W.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! I ordered a few items including steamed broccoli, and the broccoli had a worm in it! Disgusting & I will not go back to this restaurant. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Ricky L.

Yelp
The food is good here, the lady running register um yea. So I places my order online it came up to about $13 when I get there its $15 so I show her the online receipt and she says our prices went up due to covid. That's fine but when I placed the order online it gave me one total. This means that the prices on the website need to be updated. Tried to explain that to her but I guess she didn't comprehend. I see why they don't make you pay online, come on in and pay that adjusted price. Crazy thing is a few ladies came in behind me and she have them discounts. Smh what happened to the covid prices maam. The 3 stars is due to her snippy attitude and the bs she was kicking.

Yelp
Let's first start with the name Kong's Vegetarian=Kong's Kitchen are the same restaurant so don't get fooled by the name. I don't have anything good to say about this place from my two experience. My first experience, I order Kung Pao Chicken and they found someway to make it taste Just AWFUL. My second experience, I didn't know I was ordering from the same awful place becuase of the slight name change so I order a Vegetarian Kung Pao chicken just AWFUL again. I don't know how they are cooking or the ingredients that go into their food but their claim to no MSG is questionable and the only item that they didn't mess up in both my orders was steamed rice. Also, both times I ordered was through food apps which had no different on the quality of them food. I recommend if you are hung at night and want Chinese food either go elsewhere or no eat it over this HORRIBLE place.

Kendall C.

Yelp
Worst Asian food I ever had. Tiny scraps of chicken , my meal was supposed to be chicken and white rice and it was 80% sliced onions
google avatar

Sheetal J.

Yelp
3 stars because our food had way too much salt and my friend's food was weird. I ordered the Shrimp Lo Mein and my friend ordered the Vegetarian Chicken Lo Mein. If you are vegetarian, I would not get too excited about the vegetarian meat. That meat was like just pieces of some random product (hopefully soy based) and there is no way it resembled or tasted anything like chicken. The food was also kind of greasy, and not in a flavorful way. In terms of quantity, there is a lot. My shrimp lo mein came with a lot of good quality shrimp and veggies - it was just so salty that I couldn't even finish half of it. My friend ate around the meat in her food and then ended up throwing the rest of it away too. Order from here if you are not vegetarian and if you want okay-ish food delivery - just ask for it to be cooked with low sodium soy sauce! Note: dumplings aren't bad!!
google avatar

Yelp
FINALLY a good Chinese food place between Midtown & Buckhead. I'm giving this 5 stars, not because it's on par with the Optimist and the like, but because it's 5 stars in its category. We ordered two dinner combos, which includes your entree, ANY fried rice you want (plain, chicken, shrimp, etc.) at no extra cost, soup, and an egg roll. SO MUCH FOOD for a very reasonable price. A problem I have with other places is 1. The meat isn't always cooked through and 2. They skimp on the veggies for cost sake. I didn't experience either of these! We ordered sweet and sour chicken and kung pao chicken and they were full of veggies! Especially the kung pao, which made me very happy, bc most places have a horrible kung pao. The shrimp fried rice was PERFECT. Full of bean sprouts and fresh shrimp. The last placed I ordered from just put soy sauce on rice. Eye roll. The person who took my order was very friendly and explained that we could order whatever fried rice we wanted. He asked if we wanted any extra sauces, chopsticks, etc. This may seem ordinary, but some many places don't even offer napkins. Very please with my experience!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
I tried this place two years ago thought I'd give it a try but damn it is still the worst Chinese food in all of Atlanta. Ordered from this place when it first opened up and thought I would try some simple stuff, since I live around the corner. Ordered fried shrimp roll, wonton soup, ...how do you mess up wonton soup???!!...and spring roll. Ended up tossing and eating my leftovers
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Vegan/Vegetarian Review: This is Review is for delivery. The wife wanted Chinese so we found Kong's Kitchen via Yelp/Grubhub. I was happy to see so many Vegan choices of Tofu and mock meats. I went with the Vegetarian Chicken with Garlic Sauce. The Vegetarian Chicken was a good texture and went well with the mixed veggies. Overall, we thought the flavor of the food was just okay. It was not the best nor worst Chinese but we won't be rushing back either.
google avatar

L C.

Yelp
Great to be able to get good food late in atl! Also they have a lot to choose from. I love the fried dumplings!
google avatar

Subash Chandra B.

Yelp
Ordered a couple times on ubereats and everything has been pretty good. Egg drop soup Hot and sour soup Chicken and mushroom soup Fried Rice Spring rolls Fortune cookies Everything has been packaged well items have all been tasty. This is a good greasy spoon Chinese that gives nyc American Chinese take out vibes.
google avatar

Kelly W.

Yelp
There is no way there reviews are legitimate after my food experience. Ordered from Uber eats. Great service. The food was sub par. Sesame chicken added lo mein. Mediocre. Hunan beef with white rice almost flavorless and i think i had a cucumber chunk in the veg mix. Hot and sour soup was good. Egg drop went straight into the trash. The portions were really small considering each dish was $12-14. The fried wontons for the soup were stale! Obviously a disappointment.
google avatar

Suelen P.

Yelp
Pros- food was ready quickly Cons- not very flavorful and the quality of the meet leaves a lot to desire.
google avatar

Shamel S.

Yelp
I'm from Brooklyn. Haven't found Chinese close yet but Kong's Kitchen got it. First time I ordered the lady who answered was not so friendly but the food was great. Went back and a young girl was there this time and she was super nice. Saved y'all. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Walter B.

Yelp
So i ordered on Uber eats for pickup, because I want to probably pick it up. So I get there after I receive a notification that my order is ready. The cashier working on tonight with the mustache is very rude. Not only did her and the customer before me carry on for at least 10 mins about Bank of America settlements she offers her a 15% discount then gets an attitude with me Because I simply wanted the food I had already paid for.
google avatar

Bob S.

Yelp
The first two items I ordered were relatively tasteless I ordered the steamed potstickers hoping they would be made by hand but I think they came from a procurement company? And if not they were pretty bad The second item was the shrimp eggroll, very greasy and again lacking in a lot of flavor
google avatar

Jes A.

Yelp
Food tastes like straight up plastic. Constantly missing crucial sauces and it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. I have ordered from here several times, and NEVER will again. Sesame chicken was inedible, tasted like it would give me cancer. The crab rangoons came dry with no sauce... Someone needs to take over this untapped market of decent late night food in midtown.
google avatar

Jamiel Y.

Yelp
I got the spicy chicken with plain fried rice and wonton soup. The chicken was terrible and the texture was the worst part. Not spicy at all. As you can see the rice was not plain and the service was not welcoming but I have 2 stars because it was late and maybe the lady working the cashier was ready to get home. I will not try this place again.

Martha G.

Yelp
this Chinese restaurant deserves their low rating. I should have paid more attention to 3star rating. my delivery was timely, but....egg rolls tasted of old oil and May have been reheated. the fried dumplings had an off taste and the cashew chicken was seasoned very poorly and left a bad after taste... I have been to China 4 times and have eaten at small local restaurants as well as at Michelin starred restaurants, so I have a fair idea of what good and even great Chinese (or American Chinese) should taste . sorely disappointed. will not reorder.
google avatar

Jesús H.

Yelp
Overall the food was okay, but what really knocked off some of the great rating is the fact I ordered a chicken corn soup along with my order, and as you can tell the broth was quite literally salted water some corn and chicken. I know this isn't how it comes, I've had the soup from here before and was truly let down by this. The Mongolian chicken and shrimp fried rice were good.

It's.Stephan T.

Yelp
Very uncomfortable experience ordering my food , I was uninformed on how to order what I wanted. I just wanted to get a suggestion and I was met with a unnecessary attitude. This will be my last time ordering from there. Unless there is a food shortage lol I'm a very positive guy so even this message mean that it was hurtful.

Amanda P.

Yelp
I ordered online through yelp/Grubhub. Items were missing from my order that I was charged for. Spoke with the Grubhub driver, she mentioned this restaurant has a habit of this and redirected me to Grubhub support. Luckily Grubhub refunded me. So far the food is good. But don't like being charged for something and not receiving it. Update: Tried the pork fried rice, sesame chicken and pork egg rolls. Not good at all! The rice was super salty and the pork looked slimy. The sesame chicken looked like something from Panda Express. Nah, worst! Definitely don't recommend this place. Yuck!
google avatar

Hana M.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery. Delivery was way faster than expected! I got: Mixed fried dumplings Mapo tofu Sesame balls Veggie tempura I 'd give the overall meal a 3.5/5. The sesame balls were my favorite! Then mapo tofu, perfectly salty spicy and soft. Exactly what I wanted and the temp was perfect upon arrival. The fried dumplings were mediocre and greasy. The worst was the veggie tempura. The carrot was raw, the bell pepper one still had uncooked dough in it.
