21 Distinctive Portland Cafes That Roast Their Own Coffee

"Kopi on Southeast Burnside sources its beans throughout Southeast Asia, often including coffees from Vietnam, Indonesia, and Myanmar. The owners spent 15 years traveling and living in this region learning about coffee farming, and now roast under the name Pagi Coffee Merchants. Visitors will be charmed by the Indo-Malay décor; the charming sloped-roof entrance welcomes patrons to an interior filled with traces of Indonesia, like imported carved columns and paintings of wayang puppet theater. The café menu is also packed with beverages that feature ingredients found throughout Southeast Asia, from Kopi Jahe, an Indonesian ginger coffee, to a take on Vietnamese iced coffee made with cold brew. Alongside these are traditional espresso beverages, visitors can order loose-leaf tea from Jasmine Pearl, breakfast burritos from Higher Taste, and pastries supplied by Bee’s Custom Cakes." - Katrina Yentch, Nathan Williams

Portland’s Best Southeast Asian Restaurants, Mapped - Eater Portland

"To say Portland has a thriving coffee scene is an understatement. Still, Kopi (the Indonesian word for coffee) is unique among the many local greats. Using beans sourced directly from Southeast Asia, baristas prepare drinks like koi jahe — a ginger, cardamom, and nutmeg French press — and kedai susu — a latte with makrut-lemongrass and sweetened condensed milk. In the morning, wake up for stuffed breakfast rotis and coconut rice bowls with bacon, sausage, or curry." - Nick Woo

I went to Kopi last time I was in Portland and just had to visit it again. I love their unique concept of blending southeastern touches to their coffee flavors. Their kedai susu is a MUST, you won’t find it anywhere else in Portland (or maybe the entire west coast). It tastes almost like a chai latte but more coconut-y. They have a seating area but their hours are really limited. Everyday they close at 2pm so it’s not really meant for afternoon studying. Parking in this area is hard so you better hope you get lucky with street parking.

The service was nice, but the dine-in area was dingy. The Spiced ginger coffee (KOPI JAHE) tasted awful, only served in small paper cup and already pre-made in the pot. No breakfast menus. The Everything Brioche and other foods looked like store-baked goods and they just heated ‘em up. Only Cardamon Latte was freshly made on the spot. Disappointing! An overpriced coffee house when the quality of coffee and food are beneath what we would expect from all the good reviews here.

It's been a long time since I've been in this area (usually if I'm trying to go to Screen Door). The place gets pretty busy, and people are common in and out. The seating area is nice and cozy. We ordered a couple of drinks - Kedai Susu (iced) and Ube Blossom Latte (hot). The drinks were prepared pretty quickly. Both of the drinks were pretty good. I enjoyed the iced drink more as it wasn't too sweet.

If you are tired with Starbucks and other popular coffee places, and would like to try something exotic, this is your place. This is a hidden gem, only if you are open to experiment. This place is a south-east Asia influenced coffee house with a hippie vibe. I got myself a Thai iced cold brew. This is a strong iced coffee with cream and sugar, with a dash of cardamom. This is an exotic combination and is very aromatic. I absolutely love it. Another coffee on our table is the most popular one called kedai susu. Although it’s happen to be the most popular one, we don’t like it much. We have ordered one readymade snack from the counter - a brioche with ham inside. It is pretty decent. The place has a very liberal and inclusive vibe which is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to go back and try their other coffee speciality.

What a delight. This is a little hole in the wall that will exceed your expectations. It’s a coffee roaster. They have relationships with local SE Asian farmers and bring it back to Portland for our palettes. The food. Yum. Yum. And Yum. It’s delicious, healthy and SE Asian inspired heavier on the Indonesian side. Not sure what to order? Ask. They will be happy to help. You’ll leave feeling satisfied and not overly stuffed. There is an area just below that has ample seating. Great ambiance and WiFi. The coffee is unique. I had a Ginger flavored coffee and it was a great change from the norm. Peanut sauce and Tofu. Sooo good.

I'm from Wisconsin and have spent quite a few days in Portland. I'm a coffee connessiuer. Ive tried about 4 or 5 different coffee shops before trying Kopi Coffee, and i have to say it is by far my favorite. The barista was very nice, the coffees we had were delicious (the ube latte being my favorite), and I enjoy the seating that is in this coffee shop as well which I forgot to take photos of. If I lived here this would be a place I'd frequent.

Tried the cardomom Latte. One of the best coffee I have ever had! Staff prides themselves on the product. Person on the counter takes time to explain the contents of the different contoctions on the menu. Wife tried the Mocha Madu and was excellent too! Will certainly visit again if back in town!

Got the honey mocha latte hot. Def recommend although a little more on the sweeter side for my coffee preferences these days. You can ask for half sweet if needed. :) Great ambiance in the shop and a good amount of seating in their little basement area if there aren’t spots up by the front. They also sell beans that are really good for making coffee at home. 👌🏼
