Where to Eat Korean Food in Tacoma’s Lakewood K-Town | Eater

"A women-led nonprofit founded in the early 1970s that evolved from a social club into a major social-services organization offering ESL classes, driving lessons, resume help, domestic-violence support and later affordable housing and senior-care initiatives; registered as a nonprofit in 1979, it has grown into one of the state's largest nonprofits, employing around 1,400 people across multiple counties and managing tens of millions in annual operations, and remains a civic anchor built to help newly arrived and longtime Korean American residents." - Samantha Bakall

I drop my grandma off for her to visit KWA Wednesday mornings. I appreciate the service and work they do to help feed lunch and entertain the seniors as they come together, BUT what’s unacceptable is letting the elderly women and men take EXPIRED food home (around 1-3 years expired). If the canned/bagged/etc food is coming from donations or wherever to KWA, it should be checked and tossed out if expired, NOT given out for people to consume. I don’t always get to see all the food she does bring home because she’ll lie about not having any or that the food is fine and so she sometimes consumes the food then later gets sick (she has dementia so her memory and attitude is affected). PLEASE stop giving out donations if it’s OVERLY expired OR start checking the foods expiration dates to make sure it’s suitable to eat.

Recently I was in a serious DV altercation and was calling around for emergency shelter assistance due to the situation. I had gotten their phone number from a social worker at the hospital and had called them second. My first interaction was a very rude receptionist. Very cold with no compassion. After she had provided me with the intake line I called it, whoever answered took my information and informed me that they would have someone call me back. It’s been 2 weeks and neither a single phone call or an email. I was already a little skeptical considering I’m not Asian, but with the pictures on their website and the fact that a social worker provided me the number I assumed that wouldn’t be an issue. I’m not necessarily sure whether or not race was a factor, however considering the circumstance of the emergent situation I was extremely disappointed in their version of “help” and quite frankly discouraged by it. I hope they review how they handle these situations in the future and offer better training because that type of discouragement can lead to a victim never reaching out for help again.
