I don't care for the lobster rolls here because 1. Mayo and lettuce and 2. Sub roll, not top-split.
HOWEVER my entire mayo and lettuce-loving family LOVES these things. They've been visiting this place for decades, I've listened to my dad wax poetic over these lobster rolls with my aunts over the phone on Christmas, and when we make our yearly pilgrimage to Maine each summer to visit extended family, build fires, roast marshmallows, jump off docks, and tell stories, these lobster rolls are always there. The ceremony is a strange one, to be sure, and it has changed some over the past decade.
Used to be, my Aunty (say "on-tea", not "ant-y") Di would drive from Unity, fetch as many rolls as her fridge could hold, then stash them there in anticipation of her siblings' arrivals. The rolls would then be offered, as though they were a super secret surprise, to everyone coming through the door. "Hey! Look what we have in here (grown man leads other grown man to fridge and throws open door with a flourish and a huge grin)...LOBSTER ROLLS!"
Now, each member of the family will receive no fewer than half-dozen redundant texts and phone calls prior to the feast regarding # of rolls required and whose sacred duty it will be to obtain them. Whole? Half? Will we want to snack on one later? Are we planning to eat one for breakfast the following day? Do we remember how good they are? And also how BIG?
The lobster rolls are HUGE, packed with lobster, and this store is the real deal. It's an unassuming family owned corner store, much like the ones that used to dot the country but have been largely forced out by chains. Avoid the tourist traps and don't you DARE get a lobster roll from McDonald's!
