Kota

"Welcoming harbourside granary with thick stone walls, a tiled floor and an array of wood furnishings; its name means ‘shellfish’ in Maori. Menus mix unfussy and more elaborate dishes and display subtle Asian influences courtesy of the owner’s Chinese and Malaysian background. Many of the ingredients are foraged. Bedrooms are simply furnished – one overlooks the harbour." - Michelin Inspector

Quite easily once of the best meals I have had in the last year. The quality of ingredients and level of creativity in the dishes is so unique and exceptional. We loved every single dish that was brought out, but particular highlights included the sirloin, John Dory and the potato deep fried oyster. Have never had anything quite like that before and shall be dreaming of that oyster for nights to come. A must visit!

We have dined at Kota many times and have always loved it. We were excited to try the menu re-launch and it dud not dussapoint. Whilst the tasting menu is still available and looked delicious, we opted to choose a selection of Snacks and Pinxos. Wow is all I can say, the flavours were amazing. Would highly recommend the Crispy potato wrapped oysters and the Hispi cabbage. Service lovely as always, thank you Ellie for guiding us through the menu and the rest of the team for such a lovely evening.

Had a lovely few days at Kota. The staff were lovely and could not do enough for us. The room was great,a really comfy bed and a fridge with milk and water, plenty of tea and coffee. Their lovely housekeeper checked in with us every day to ensure we had all we needed. The meal at Kota was amazing ,loads of choice and the flavours were lovely. The icing on the cake was a lovely recipe book signed by Jude for us to take home. I look forward to trying some of the ideas. Would definitely go back.

Excellent, exquisite food! Compliments to the chef! Took my Father for early Father's day, both had tasting menu. Delicious, exciting menu. I diary- free and pescatarian and chef had no problem catering for this. Every dish wonderful, couldn't chose a favorite as all delicious but the cuttlefish bolognese was something else- some sort of chef wizardry going on there- rich , deep flavour with the what looked like pasta ribbons ,and what looked like bolognese meat all being made from the cuttlefish! Taste was divine . Varied tastes of all the dishes wonderful, and inventive. Very good, professional, friendly and nformal service- two ladies who served us were lovely. Relaxed atmosphere, lovely space/restaurant and very reasonably priced! Good wine list also. 10/10 , will definitely return.

Sorry, but not as good as it used to be. The options have gone off the taster menu and I don't feel the small plates idea works. Previously, with the options on the tasting menu my wife could order fish and I could order either meat or fish. This time there were fish courses and meat courses, but no option to swap out. We went for the separate plates, and were told it would be like ordering a starter and a main. Unfortunately, my wife's fish came up on it's own and so I had to wait while she ate hers and then she was lucky enough to get her side dish, when my main turned up. If we'd been told it was tapas and the plates would turn up at intervals, we could have ordered dishes we'd both eat, but that would have brought up another problem with the menu. If you are ordering tapas, you expect to share, but the portions are small, i.e. 1 small bit of gurnard or 1 pig's cheek. Hard for 2 people to share, but if we'd been a party of 4, the dishes would have been ruined trying to divide them up. These plates seemed to be the same size as the courses on the taster menu, so not ideal for sharing. It's early days, so I hope they sort things out, but unfortunately not for us in this format.

Very nice experience, one of the best places we have been to eat in England. Great value for money in the UK context! Professional service, they were very late but offered us a drink and then were efficient for each dish. Food was creative and tasty.

Now trialling a Sunday lunch menu which is truly outstanding. Starters to share are Lobster croquette and Windy Ridge Farm Rump cap, the usual homemade breads with fresh cheese and the amazing Kota heritage tomatoes. All prepared to the usual high standards. Then a choice of roast beef (from Phillip Warren) or roast pork, with all the usual vegetables. To follow are two shared desserts, a massive bread and butter pudding with soda bread ice cream and chocolate mouse with blackberry ice cream and fennel. Packed restaurant despite torrential rain, great atmosphere and attentive and friendly service. Get in while you can, a lot of very high quality and very tasty food at £49.50 per head. Highly recommended

Yelp
Great all around restaurant. The host was very friendly and down to earth, servers were efficient and the restaurant was comfortable. More importantly, great food. Had to try the oysters, had one tempura style and one natural, both were perfect. Really enjoyed the tempura style with a touch of wasabi, the other oyster was fresh and tasty. For a starter, I had crab ravioli. At first I found the flavor a little overwhelming (not a typical pasta sauce) but it grew on me to the point where I made sure I got every drop. My main was duck, also very enjoyable. Particularly liked the duck croquette that accompanied. I had to try dessert and an excellent strawberry pannacotta, with a touch of gin. A very enjoyable meal.

Yelp
What a fantastic meal. From the complimentary appetisers to the very end, every dish was delicious. I started with natural oysters and the sauce that went with the oysters was absolutely scrumptious. It was ponzu and some other things (I can't remember!) but it might very well have been the best sauce I've ever had with oysters!!! For mains I had the hake - what a perfect balance of flavours. The soup it was in was delicious and the hake cooked perfectly. The vegetables went well.. I'm not sure if I was imagining a satiny bit of fish sauce in there.. Either way, it was delicious. The staff were great and recommended an Argentinian white which complimented the fish perfectly. We don't normally eat deserts but since everything had been so good we ordered two and told the waitress to not be offended if we don't eat it all. We ate it all. Definitely recommended, and well priced too!!

Yelp
Dined here late Feb09. Much above average food with good aspirations, only one out of 8 dishes did not quite make it but was very edible just the same. The rest got exclamations from my chums on their enjoyment. A reasonable wine list, both in selections and pricing, with some good Aussies as the chef/proprietor is from there. Well worth a detour and I suspect booking is essential, I did.

Yelp
Came here with a dear friend a few years ago and had one of the most incredible meals of my life! Such beautiful presentation, and the plum sorbet was to die for! Highly reccomended for those who are foodies or are looking for a change from the ordinary.

Yelp
Lived in the village for two years and this was my first visit. I can honestly say it was a suprise to find what I would describe as a fine dining experience so close to home. Superb food, excellent service at affordable prices. If you visit porthleven, you are missing out if you don't try it!!

Yelp
The food was fabulous, the best we've eaten, really. Not too pricey, in fact excellent value for money. Good, friendly service. This has got to be one of the best restaurants in the UK. There, that's saying something. We're just customers, no allegiance to this restaurant. I'm very quick to criticise if I feel I haven't got what I paid for, but not in this case.

Yelp
Kota quite simply know exactly how to run a restaurant. The food is superb and clearly cooked by those who know what good food is. The menu is small enough to be made with TLC and big enough for a good choice. Staff are attentive and the venue is cosy and comfortable. 10/10 from us

Yelp
I am lucky enough to live close by to Kota. There are many fine Restuarants in this part of England as you can imagine but this is my favourite. Delivers on all points you would wish it too every visit. The welcome and sevice is excellent. The food is wonderful, the Restaurant is lovely with perfect lighting and background music. An excellent wine list! Try the Tempura Oysters to start at £2.00 a pop! Kota is not overpriced and I recommend it for a great meal out.
