Had a fantastic dinner here on a Wednesday evening. There were 4 of us, and we walked right in around 7 pm to sit down at the hibachi. The place is larger than I was expecting given the storefront. It has about half a dozen of the hibachi tables, as well as additional seating if you are doing sushi. The place was very clean. It's so spacious, even if it was full I don't think it would feel that crowded.
Our drink orders were taken immediately, and our server was fantastic throughout. She was quick when we needed drink refills (or additional beers), and was very friendly with my 5 year old son. Likewise, our chef was great with him, telling jokes and making him laugh. Great place for kids based on my first visit.
I had a Sooner Roll for an appetizer. This is salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and avocado with some sauces, including eel. It's a nice roll, I've seen some better construction. The sauces had some nice heat, and it's large. I'd get it again, but I wasn't blown away by it.
To eat, I went with the filet and chicken combo. Our chef arrived about 15 or so minutes after we ordered. We had the requisite broth soup with random onions floating in it, along with the ginger salad. Both were fine, but you don't come to these places for the soup and salad. The chef put on a great show for us, my son was initially frightened by the flame, but he had a great time. Like I said above, the chef was cracking jokes the whole time and was very friendly.
The fried rice was good, but it didn't separate itself from other rices I've had at hibachi/teppanyaki joints. The shrimp appetizer was solid, seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Given that he doused them in oil and cooked them in flames, I was surprised it retained so much juiciness. I was expecting the shrimp to be more rubbery. The noodles are cooked simply in soy sauce and some seasoning, but they went very well with the veggies and chicken. Not every place I've done hibachi at gives you noodles, so that was a nice bonus.
Of the chicken and filet, I preferred the beef. The chicken was hardly seasoned, and while it wasn't overcooked, it simply didn't have much flavor. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was more aggressively seasoned than the chicken. The veggies retained some of their crunchiness, which meant they weren't overcooked. I loved the "yum yum" sauce, a creamy sauce that went with the meats and veggies. Overall, you get a ton of food that tastes good for $32 per person. Solid deal.
The food is 3.5 stars, what pushes it to 4 is the prompt and friendly service we received. Annoyed I've been driving past this place for years, I will definitely be back.
