"You’ll queue, you’ll feel your ears pop as you ride up the lift to the 37th floor, and you’ll bask in the glory of a free attraction—and of course, one of the best views of London. The best time to visit Sky Garden is around sunset—that way you can get some golden hour shots and head straight to Koya City for tonkatsu afterwards. Part rustic Tokyo diner, part cabin Pinterest board, this Japanese udon specialist serves curry atsu atsu so great it should be considered a destination itself. And if the idea of queuing all over again is making you nauseous, know that you can—and should—book ahead." - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, jake missing
"Are you desperately unhappy with your job, partner, and the entire universe? Or are you just cold? This is the question we all must ask ourselves once we hit frost season, and the only way to truly answer it is by getting involved in a big, steaming bowl of udon. Koya makes our favourite hand-pulled udon noodles in London, and now you can enjoy them at home as part of their Big Night Box. Expect hot delicious dashi, homemade pickles, and for your mood to go from ‘meh’ to perfectly content and cosy." - heidi lauth beasley
"Absolutely everything you order at Koya, be it in Soho or the City, can include the never-not-welcome addition of tanuki for 80p or so. Tanuki is tempura batter flakes—Japanese scraps, basically—and they’re a welcome mouthful of crunchy goodness to pretty much anything and everything. Of course there’s the actual tempura as well, or crispy prawn heads, or a slab of tonkatsu." - jake missing
"The udon gods have graced us with a second location of Koya, and it’s exactly where you want to be on a Wednesday night. This Bloomberg Arcade location is more spacious, takes reservations, and has got more of the same excellent udon noodles, donburi rice dishes, and sharing plates. And once you come here, you’ll want to be back every week." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak, eileen twum
"Koya’s Udon. That’s what we’re going to name our firstborn. Sure it might be a little rough on the playground, but it’s always an honour to be named after a legend. Jokes aside, this laid-back noodle bar serves the kind of food that worms its udon-y way into your heart to the point that you think about it at least six times a week. All of their curry dishes are worth your attention, but when you’re trying to satisfy a katsu craving, it’s the tonkatsu or, even better, the katsudon that you need to order. Breaded aged pork loin, egg, steamed rice, with a classic side of complimentary miso soup. Fantastic." - heidi lauth beasley
