All the Restaurant Openings in Houston, June 2025 | Eater Houston

"A casual, NASA-adjacent hand-roll sushi counter focused on making sushi accessible, led by executive chef Leo Hirai; hand rolls are made fresh to order with classics like tuna and salmon alongside options such as spicy scallop and lobster, and curated hand-roll sets simplify ordering for newcomers. The strip-mall outlet features a sushi counter with swivel stools, a tan-and-red color scheme, and whimsical artwork of kittens cuddling with rolls of sushi." - Courtney E. Smith

Koyo is a hidden gem! The hand rolls are insanely fresh and packed with flavor — you can taste the quality in every bite. The seaweed is perfectly crisp, the rice is seasoned just right, and the fish melts in your mouth. The vibe is sleek and intimate, and the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Easily one of the best hand roll spots I’ve ever been to. Can’t wait to go back! The vibes from the girls that waited on us were great too!

Google
The cutest new handroll bar! Koyo offers fresh, delicious handrolls for a steal! Choose from sets of 3, 4, or 5 handrolls - the 5 handroll set is only $25! You can also order a la carte (everything about $7). I love that everything is super affordable so it feels like happy hour but it’s the actual price. Also, the food is quality. The seaweed is so crisp and snappy! My favorites were the salmon, scallop, and yellowtail but truly everything is good. They just opened so it’s still under the radar—if you’re near Webster, run, don’t walk! So much less expensive than trendier spots in the heights!

We were able to dine in during the soft opening and the food is amazing! Great quality fish and the crudos and hand rolls were so tasty. Great service as well and the atmosphere is very aesthetic. Lucky to have a good quality hand roll bar closer to the Friendswood/Webster area now! Highly recommend!

Google
Hands down the best hand roll spot I’ve been to in Houston. Each roll had its own distinct flavor, the salmon was my favorite, so fresh and buttery! The crudos were also a standout, and everything is priced really well for the quality. On top of that, the service was warm and attentive without feeling rushed. I just wish this place was in the Inner Loop!! I’d be here all the time!

A friend found and suggested we visit Koyo Hand Roll Bar. Koyo just had a soft open a month ago, as they are new to the area. Owned by the same owners of Gen & Jinya. Happy to report this should be a spot you need to visit if you're craving sushi / sashimi / nigiri style food. Service was Top Notch, the friendly staff were engaged and holding conversations with us. All while our food was being prepared right in front of us. Continuously asking us if we needed more or topping us off. The selections: we actually tried so much. So I'll keep to the highlights only, and what we thought were the very best. For a Starter: Salmon Crudo and/or Yellowtail Crudo need to be on your list to try. The salmon crudo with the garlic aioli & lemon zest was delicious! Best part if you enjoy this combination, it can be included into your hand-roll order. The yellowtail crudo with tamarind ponzu was another delicious combo. But I'm already a ponzu lover. ;) Should you enjoy a little Sake to wash it all down. Definitely check out Moonstone Pear or Plum. They have a great smooth flavor with a hint on the back. For the Hand Rolls, choose to preference as always. Yellowtail is one of my personal favorites and didn't disappoint. It's tried and true. It was fresh, crisp, deliciousness. Oh did I forget to mention, the hand rolls are just $5!!! I don't think you'll find many places offering anything close to that. Big bang for your buck. On my next visit, I'm looking forward to trying the fatty tuna hand roll. We can't wait to return for more. Our only issues that are worth noting to be aware of: If there's a crowd, the inside does echo and can get noisy. Lastly: parking in this area sucks, the business park stays full during the prime time hours. So be aware when you choose to visit. What were your favorites? How was your experience? @follow Until next time!

If you're a sushi lover looking for a fresh and modern twist, this hand roll spot is a must-visit. From the moment | walked in, the atmosphere struck the perfect balance between casual and upscale and a clean, minimalist design with a counter-style layout that invites you to watch the chefs craft each roll by hand. The quality of the fish was exceptional — incredibly fresh, and flavorful. Each hand roll was made to order and served one at a time, ensuring the nori stayed perfectly crisp. All their crudos are amazing as well.

Google
Extremely delicious hand rolls at a very good price! Love how the menu is not overwhelming. I ordered the set of 5 hand rolls and a yellowtail crudo. Everything was very flavorful and made to order, the seaweed was crispy, and the fish was fresh. Service was very friendly too: shoutout to Angelica!

Google
Walked in for a quick lunch but realized this is a date night and girls night material establishment so I came back for dinner with my partner instead. The atmosphere is clean and inviting- no back support and stools only seating so be prepared because the vibe is worth it. The prices were great and the same was tasty. We ended up splitting a 5 and a crudo and it was just enough for 2. Everything was fresh flavorful and the service was excellent. You can tell they are proud of their dishes. I am sorry to have missed the grand opening because I could be used that labubus but I am excited to be back either way.

Yelp
Good quality handrolls. I got the 3 for $15 and all the rolls were so tasty! It's a pretty good deal but I do wish it was a little more filling for $15. I recommend getting the $3 for 4 sauces, all the sauces were amazing. My favorites were the chilli oil and the spicy mayo. I also got the scallop crudo, very unique and refeshing flavor.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday in the afternoon, for the first time. Easy to locate in a strip center near a Jinya Ramen. There was only 1 other person waiting for take-away so I essentially had the place to myself. It's a cutesey intimate place, decorated simple and modern with 1 sushi counter. I asked the server if it was always this quiet, she stated it's busier for lunch and dinner, but in between it's pretty calm. I love that they have service all day 11am to about 10pmish. Which is great, so you can go during offpeak times. Sometimes restaurants limit themselves to only dinner, or open to 11am to 2p then close until 5p etc. I wonder if they will make a HH in the future? Food- I decided on the 5-set. Salmon, fatty tuna, crab, spicy scallop, and yellowtail. Ultimately my fav was the yellowtail, but the salmon and crab were pretty tasty. 5 for $25 is a pretty great deal, but is is the 'burbs. Service- was great, had a nice chat with my server. She was very warm and inviting. And was a young college student working for the summer. I will definitely return.

Yelp
Food- 4/5 Service- 5/5 Ambiance- 5/5 Food: Never been to a Hand Roll Bar before. The food was good, just not worth the $25 price tag for 5 rolls. Other than the price though, the rice is well seasoned, the seaweed is nice and crispy, and each fish I got was well prepared (I especially enjoyed the fatty tuna). Service/Ambiance: The staff was friendly and offered their advice whenever people in my party were stuck between ordering rolls. Ambiance is nice and modern but the chairs and layout are not overly accommodating for any party larger than 3 people. As part of the expanding shopping center of Gen and Jinya, Koyo offers a nice experience for smaller parties if you're not too hungry and looking for a quick bite.

Yelp
KOYO is the newest hand roll bar on the block. It offers a simple menu with decent prices. We were immediately greeted by the staff and got seated quickly. Our counter servers were super helpful and introduced us to the menu since it was our first time. The bf and I ordered the 5* and the 4* hand roll sets, which came with 1-2 of salmon, spicy tuna, fatty tuna, crab, spicy scallop, and yellowtail hand rolls between the both of us. The hand rolls are made fresh before us and best eaten immediately when the seaweed is still crunchy. The salmon is an absolute must and the star of the show. It comes with a bit of a crunch and hints of citrus. Not sure what's in it, but it was amazing. Both of our jaws were on the ground. Overall, a great, casual, fun, new establishment and I look forward to swinging by if I'm ever in the area again!

Yelp
Came in between lunch and dinner, so to be fair there wasn't many people dining in at the time I went (perfect for me!) Place is fairly new, it was mentioned grand opening was last Saturday and they've been open for 3-4 weeks now. I came across this place on IG ad, and I've been loving handrolls recently, so when I saw the menu I definitely knew this was up my alley. $25 for the 5 handroll set was a steal compared to handies/hando,etc. also got 2 crudos - Salmon: 9.5/10 Fatty tuna: 10/10 Crab: 10/10 Spicy scallop 9.5/10 Yellowtail 10/10 (my favorite one!) Yellow Tail Crudo: 9.5/ 10 Salmon Crudo: 10/10 (I loved the garlic aioli in this!! I thought it paired so well w/ the lemon zest) Their seaweed is delicious and crunchy. You can taste the freshness of the fish, and every bite will be absolute bliss. Special recognition to Chef Leo, he was so detailed oriented when making the crudos I can tell he is passionate in his craft, and overall kind making sure all the handrolls came out right. The employees too were also attentive and interactive. The place was super clean, organized, and I loved the seating arrangement with also the gorgeous mirrors on the wall. Makes a good evening setting for date nights, girls night, etc. plenty of parking. Definitely will come back again! I will drive near and far for this place because dare I say, if handies/hando was your favorite, you might change your mind like I did. Bringing everyone I know here next time. Thank you guys!!

Yelp
We found this place from an ad on Instagram! Didn't know what exactly to expect. Upon entry, the place was extremely clean with a nice interior design. Lots of seating around the chef's area. Reminds me a lot of Handies Dozo. I ordered the 5 hand roll set and my husband ordered the 4 hand roll set. We also ordered salmon crudo to share. I got full super quickly after 5 hand rolls. Everything was great! From food to the service. I would definitely come back to try more items!

Yelp
I'm so excited that my sister and I stumbled on this little spot. It's very clean, brightly lit and modern with stools around a central area for chefs to make rolls for you as you order. There was no wait at all because it literally opened Monday, so we also got the benefit of almost everyone's full attention. Each item was so fresh, and the rice was so warm and seasoned wonderfully. The nori was was so crisp because it's made fresh and handed to you. Fave items: salmon crudo, yellowtail hand roll, spicy scallop hand roll. The spicy scallop had such a different spice profile than what I was expecting--it tasted a bit like my mom's chicken karahi. So you know I had to get two of those. I can't wait to see this place get busier and the attention it deserves.

Yelp
Stopped by around noon on a Sunday, and it wasn't very busy so we were seated immediately. I went with the four set, and my friend and I shared the salmon crudo. I've never had a sashimi appetizer with aioli before, but it was pretty yummy. The hand rolls were good as well - I was glad that their seaweed was crispy as I feel that's the sign of a good hand roll. The sets come out to $5 per hand roll, and that price feels alright but I honestly haven't gotten hand rolls in a while so I don't remember the standard. Service was nice. They also have hooks under the counter to hang your bags which I also always appreciate at hand roll/omakase places

Yelp
Was invited to their soft opening last month. Owner, staff and chef, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Food was amazing! The misses and I tried multiple hand rolls and enjoyed every last one. Didn't get to take much photos because the line was out the door, we didn't want to hold up service. Will definitely comeback. Come and show your support if you're in the Nassau Bay area. FYI parking maybe limited but don't let it discourage you from trying them out.

Yelp
First time going to a hand roll bar. -Unique experience, the seating could be more comfortable. We ordered every roll and I learned I do not like the normal wrap but thankfully they offer soy paper! - Appetizers are VERY small in portion and just not worth the price - my biggest piece of advice would be to not order an appetizer. All in all it was ok , I would return now that I know what to and not to order.

Yelp
My wife and I had the standard 4-piece and 5-piece handroll sets. All were quite good, though the spicy scallop and yellowtail were our favorites. Very fresh, with crispy seaweed wrap. The yellowtail crudo was also tasty. Service was attentive, and there was plenty of seating, though my wife's feet couldn't reach the foot rail, so she found the seat very uncomfortable. Also, the music tended on the loud side, and we kept having to repeat ourselves in order to be understood. Overall a pretty positive experience; we'll be back.

Yelp
Great experience at Koyo, Clear Lake definitely needs a hand roll restaurant! My mom and I truly enjoyed the rolls and the service from Emily. I will definitely be back when I visit my mom. Best of luck to you guys.

Yelp
New place in Clear Lake. The interior is very clean and minimalist, much like the food. It is a large U shape bar and they serve everyone straight from the bar. I went alone so I didn't mind. The menu was self explanatory, hand rolls with some shareables. The hand rolls were very tasty and filling. The food wasn't over the top extravagant and I appreciated that, good quality. The interesting part was there was a woman who was paid to talk to the customers. I wanted a quiet evening so I opted out of conversation but the other customers seemed to enjoy engaging in some back and forth.

Food was great! Service was lovely! Very enjoyable. We will be back! We recommend changing the music. lol

Yelp
This is the best sushi spot South of the city. Great value, really fresh flavors and wonderful service. So happy we tried this new spot! They definitely gained some loyal customers. :)

Yelp
We went to the grand opening and was welcomed by such nice staff. The food was really good; I got the 5 set hand rolls + the lobster roll and spicy tuna roll. They make the food in front of you and hand them to you. It's a good place for food that's not too heavy.

Yelp
Great space for a hand roll bar, excellent service and yummy foods!!! Their crudos are a must-try!!!! They just opened this week, so it isn't 100% perfect, but definitely 99% goodness
google avatar

Aracely C.

Yelp
I am gluten-intolerant and I was unable to dine because 98% of their hand-rolls have gluten. I appreciated the waitress asking if I had any allergies up front and checking to see what rolls I could order. If you've been to Hando or Handies Douza in Houston, that is what the seating is like here, but that is all I can say they have in common. I've had no issues at any other hand roll sushi restaurant accommodating gluten-free so I was definitely surprised. Unfortunately, most of the fillings are pre-mixed.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place so bad because it's close to home, but honestly would rather make the drive to handies. First time experience was okay.. was not serviced water, or ginger/ wasabi right away and had to ask multiple times and servers did not refill waters until end of meal when we were the only ones in the restaurant. Also the hostess or female manager in business attire was slouching on the counters yapping to the servers the whole time loudly. Food was okay, 6/10 I really enjoyed the yellowtail HR. However second time here upon entering, we weren't greeted at all when the male chefs (white uniform) looked at us, turned around to talk to another employee, looked back and walked away... with no communication. We arrived at 9pm Wed, when they close at 10. Waited for over 5 minutes and was still not even acknowledge. I'm really dissapointed in the service and staff, a new business should not be like this. It was really unwelcoming.

Yelp
Great Handroll bar! The best one I have ever had. The place has great quality of food, great service, great ambiance! The prices are very reasonable! I highly recommend.

Yelp
The experience at Koyo was top notch! From the aesthetic, service and food - I couldn't have asked for a better night in the newly opened spot. There are a myriad of hand rolls and crudo to choose but if you are like me, sometimes choosing can be a problem but they have a solution. Hand roll sets of 3,4 and 5 - chosen for you. Everything was fresh. Definitely will go again and highly recommend you try them too

Julia R.

Yelp
I got the three hand-roll set, and I thought that it was okay. The tuna was not as fresh as I would've liked, but the salmon and yellowtail were fine. It is not the same quality fish as what you might find in Houston, but it is almost just as expensive (despite being marketed as a more casual/budget-friendly restaurant). However, my main problem with the handrolls is what is surrounding the fish: 1) There is too much rice in the handrolls. I felt as if most of the time, I was eating big bites of rice rather than fish. 2) The rice that is being used is not proper sushi rice. The grains of rice are too big, and don't stick together. This leads to the roll feeling messy. 3) The seaweed that is being used is chewy, rather than crisp. Changing this (by getting better quality seaweed or slightly toasting the seaweed) would be a major quality improvement. I hope that some of these things change, because it would be nice to have a local spot for good sushi.

Terry M.

Yelp
I love hand roll bars, Hando's is one of my favorite restaurants. So when a new hand roll bar opened in my area, I was excited to try it. I was so disappointed. While the service was great, the food was less than average and was not fresh. Definitely won't be back.
google avatar

Marlee L.

Yelp
Finally an amazing handroll place in the area! The rolls were well proportioned with lots of fish and priced fairly not to mention delicious. The decor is understated, making a great evening or even lunch date. Bar is limited to beer and sake but the sake selections were good! Server and chef both were attentive. We will certainly be back

Quyen Nguyen ..

Yelp
I did not expect much from this place--especially with two other hand roll places of which I probably do not have to name in mind. I'm glad to say I was pleasantly surprised. We loved our lunch here. The seaweed was crispy and delicate, the fish was fresh, and as a whole, the hand rolls delivered. We ordered a scallop crudo that was so so. Service was prompt and kind (even offering to walk next door to get things I needed for my toddler). Speaking of which, they have the cutest little cushions that fit their chairs as boosters. I look forward to going back.
google avatar

Yuli L.

Yelp
I like this place better than the handroll place in Houston. My husband ordered the 5-roll set and I ordered the 4-roll set. My favorites are salmon, spicy tuna, and spicy scallops. Everything was fresh and I loved the fact that the roasted the seaweed before wrapping the roll. The first bite of each roll is awesome. We will be back.

Yelp
Great food! Still new so they are working out the kinks but overall great experience. Food was served quickly. Great ambiance inside. Thankful for the first hand roll that I know of in Clear Lake area.

Samuel C.

Yelp
New and clean. The only seating is around the sushi bar so it's great for eating alone and in a small group. Every time I have been here the service is incredible. The food is exceptional - particularly loved the spicy scallop hand roll. Definitely a unique addition to the area!

Aaron C.

Yelp
Staff are very nice and inviting and hand rolls were exceptional! Bigger than the avg handroll and the sauces were very tasty!

Jillian K.

Yelp
Fresh made to order food, impeccable service, calm, clean and comfortable. 10 stars! Bonus points for accommodating a 2 yr old (though well behaved and stays seated). I hope this business thrives, will definitely recommend.

Steph M.

Yelp
The food is fresh but a little overpriced for what you get. Like another reviewer said, the music is too loud (can't hear the server) and the fixed-in-place stools are uncomfortable for people with shorter legs. The biggest disappointment was the edamame: not hot! Steamed previously (?) and insufficiently AND oddly seasoned with lemon juice. We wish them well - everyone was very nice - but can't see this pulling business from Ichibon across the street.

Long L.

Yelp
Just went there on their first day opening. Food was amazing and service was 10/10. I think it's gonna be a good place to bring my wife on date night. Get the lobster hand rolls and the salmon crudo it won't disappoint. Will definitely return to try other items on their menu.
