Nobody’s Darling Expands, Proves That Lesbian Bars Have Staying Power | Eater Chicago

"I noted Krave mentioned as one of the clubbier spots on the South Side, cited as a rarer example of LGBTQ nightlife in that area." - Naomi Waxman

Google
I love this kava bar. I moved up from Florida which is covered in kava bars, so I was looking for a place to make me feel at home like I did at my favorite kava bar in Florida, Krave gives me the same vibes. I absolutely love this place, the bartenders are absolutely amazing as are the other customers!! Absolutely amazing.

Dick V.

Google
Go for the kava and stay for the conversation. The regulars are the best/most fun. Friendly owner with great managers and bartenders. Never had a bad time. The blond guy that plays computer games in the corner is the friendliest person I have ever met...he seems like the kind of person where nothing aggravates him.

Google
Excellent product. Probably best kava I’ve never had!!Service was fantastic. Tea was very tasty as well. Friendly clean environment. Regulars were super nice as well! See you guys next time I’m in town!! Thanks Watson. Great job in welcoming some newcomers

Was served some kratom tea with a friend here this afternoon. Jordan is informative, knowledgeable, and helpful. The tea is relaxing. A fantastic time for all!

Google
Awesome staff! Great Kava and Ketum (Kratom) tea! I've met soooooo many wonderful people here too. They have a large lounge area in the back if you are distancing. It's a super chill atmosphere for anyone...just see for yourself.

Google
Good atmosphere, friendly staff, only bar of its kind in the area. Always stimulating, philosophical discussion waiting/being had about any of life's conditions. Their drinks, while seemingly pricey, offer a different perspective on what social drinking is- their drinks stimulate the mind instead of numb it. I've been coming here for a couple years now, since they've opened, and it's always been a pleasant experience.

Google
If you are looking for a relaxing and stress reliving experience that is unmatched, come check it out. We drive from Raleigh at least once a week and sometimes on the weekend. The staff is super friendly and helpful explaining all of the different drinks. My favorite drink in the traditional Krush and Tong Cat (Mocha coffee drink that is amazing)

Jakub C.

Google
I’ve been going to Krave since fall 2017 close to when they first opened and I was a student at UNC. The community is great, the people are friendly, and the drink selection is nice. I keep coming back regularly since moving out of Chapel Hill. Highly recommend checking it out.

Yelp
Great and very helpful staff! They will explain Kava to you and even offer some samples. The product itself tastes earthy (something that you may have to get accustomed to over a few drinks) also they offer another type of tea (Kratom) that is more a stimulant that tastes more like what you would generally expect as a slightly sweet black tea. They also provide delta 8 infused products including gummies. Atmosphere was fine, a few places to lounge with friends, of course a main bar seating and also a few places you can sit with a laptop and plug in for a while if need be. Overall a good alternative bar.

Douglas L.

Yelp
Great alternative for those who want a non-alcoholic option for a bar. Funky space, great place to chill out in the back, and friendly staff.

Yelp
Great staff, delicious drinks, nice clientele. The kava drink is earthy and calming. I like the lemon ginger Leilo's.

Samuel H.

Yelp
Cool place, but the service is unbeatable. Went for the first time today, was helped out by A-Rod, who was really good at making you feel welcomed and helping you learn more about kava and find exactly what would work best/what you're looking for. Great place, plan on going back

Steven D.

Yelp
Awesome place. The dude with the Afro is amazing and by far makes the best drinks. Never too hot, never too cold, but just right! Even his kava and kratom drinks are on point. He should be recognized for his amazing drink making skillz. Bula!!

Yelp
Having been to some other Kava bars, this one is way overpriced. I'm used to being charged $5 for 8oz, but here it's $10. Twice the price! The whole place smells like a mouldy basement. And to top it all off they serve the drinks in styrofoam. To the owners of this establishment: Please consider changing to paper cups and incentivizing people to bring their own reusable cups. Styrofoam doesn't biodegrade and can persist in the environment for over a million years.

Yelp
I had one of the worst experiences of my life here. I use to come here with my friends all the time and hang out and it was great even though the kratom is ridiculously overpriced. But I understand they have to pay their rent. So I was there by myself one afternoon and had to use the restroom (single stall , with a faulty lock) and was fixing my hair before I left and this man opened the door on me. I didn't think anything of it, went about my bussines. A week or two passed after I had been there once or twice and the owner confronts me and tells me a patron caught me doing drugs in the bathroom and she has had me under surveillance for the past week, selling drugs on the property and that she's a lawyer, friends with law enforcement, she has me on camera, and wouldn't listen to a word I said and basically told me I could either let her manager berate, and scream at me outside in front of a bunch of customers, or she was going to report me to the police. I regret not totally standing up for myself and it eats away at me. So that's why I'm posting this.

Yelp
This place has a unique idea/concept that I haven't seen before. It's a TEA bar, and they do not serve alcohol. I stumbled into this place during the day thinking it was an alcoholic bar and I was very wrong. It's a good alternative to typical nightlife if you enjoy Kava. This was my first experience with Kava and other root based teas. Being real, it tastes like dirt! I mean this is to expected, but I wouldn't say it's gross, just not good? I put their version of Stevia in it, even though it wasn't exactly recommended, and it made the drink way more drinkable. I took it fairly slow and only had 1, because I didn't know how it would affect me. I don't know if this qualifies as a drug or not, but it definitely has a sedative type of effect. Peak effect was around 30 mins for me and gone within 2 hours. I didn't have any adverse reactions like others on here and I would try again. They have a huge lounge area in the back that I can imagine would be really cool at nighttime. The décor is strange and doesn't seem to be consistent throughout the bar but whatever. Also cool, at the bar each seat has an outlet so you can plug in all day and study if you'd like.

Yelp
Laid back atmosphere, awesome staff, and friendly clientele. The Kava ain't for everyone, but a number of people seem to really enjoy it. This was probably my favorite place to go when I lived in Carrboro. Go give it a try if you're looking for a place to hang out and relax! (The psychedelics they have on the screen in the back room are always neat as well)

Gabriel C.

Yelp
Very friendly owner and welcoming environment. They make the best teas and the lounging area is soothing for a calm and social experience. Will definitely have to go back again

Yelp
This was our first time at a Kava bar. Tyler was so helpful in explaining the menu and all that Krave has to offer. An interesting and holistic experience. A+.
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Such a great and welcoming atmosphere. Jordan and A-rod did an amazing job of explaining what the teas do, how they make you feel, and what they are made from. These two are passionate about their job and also extremely accommodating and knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back!

Karl M.

Yelp
Friendly staff!! A-Rod was very welcoming for my first visit and explained the menu. My new favorite place!!

Yelp
You know how you sometimes imagine this perfect, spontaneous experience like the hangover? Well this is the place for it, but a coffee version! My friend and I stood outside this bar for a good 30 mins because we were a little hesitant of the location and environment but then a few of be workers convinced us to come in. We really wanted to try Kava, and let me tell you, this was by far one of the best nights of my life. Your first try is complimentary! And after, we checked out the room in the back with this cool space-like environment and met App producers who we are still keeping up with until now. If you are looking for an adventure, make your way here and hope for a night half as amazing as ours!

Yelp
This place is my new favorite place in carrboro. The staff there is awesome, kind and informative. I always feel welcome when I come through the door. The kratom tea is my person favorite but the krush's are mighty swell. Do yourself a favor and go give Krave a try. I'm positive you'll leave with a smile on your face.

Yelp
Awesome space and overall feel to the place. The owner Elizabeth is super nice and knowledgeable and trains her staff to be the same! I love coming here, and would recommend it to study or just hang out.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Friend has been bugging me to try it out for months, just wasn't 'feeling' it. I regret not coming out the first time he invited me. Ketum and Kava both are really amazing. Definitely a MUST TRY, which I suspect will become a MUST GO.

Yelp
I stop by Krave daily to enjoy a Krush. Everyone here is friendly and chatty. Stop by and you'll see how easy it is to become a regular.

Skylar R.

Yelp
Amazing place for relaxing and enjoying life. Bartender is amazing, special shout out to Arod, very friendly and awesome guy.

Vick M.

Yelp
We went out with friends thinking its a tea kava, made of spices but it is not. It's made from roots of a plant which is banned in its place of origin which is Thailand. That means it's a drug. It had a sedative effect starting around 20 mins later and lasted 2-3 hours. Couple of our friends also threw up an hour later. We didn't go here again, neither do I recommend this to ones who don't know what they are going for. Specially when they sell it saying it will relax you and not tell you about sedative effect before serving. Update after Elizabeth's reply: these are kratum plants and their active compound binds to mu-opioid receptors in brain so it acts just like heroin. Google it yourself!

Yelp
The experience is awesome, Great customer service and quality product. I highly recommend Krave Kava and root tea bar. Their local raw honey is good too.

Yelp
This kava bar not only sells natural, healthy teas and beverages, but provides a welcoming and open atmosphere to regulars and new customers alike. The kava itself seems wierd and rumors have gone around that it's a drug but in reality its just like an herbal tea. This is one of my favorite places to be in town

Bailey D.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, this place is neat. My friend and I stumbled in looking for drinks after work and instead found kava crushes in styraphom cups. After a short rundown from the...bartender? we tried a cup out. A) it's not cheap B) it makes your mouth feel numbed & has the taste and consistency of dirt water (because thats essentially what it is), C) this stuff is extremely potent. We really didn't know what we were getting into and both ended up having hot flashes and throwing up, so not exactly the best night out. If you know what you're doing its probably a fun time though, and the place has a cool feel to it. Just understand that even though it's legal it's still 1000% a drug that intoxicates you and needs to be respected as such. Be responsible, it gets weird.

Yelp
I stopped into Krave 3 years ago, and ever since then, I haven't been able to leave! It has a great atmosphere with very friendly bartenders and customers. My first visit, I got to learn all about the drinks they serve and even got free samples! If you've never heard of Kava or Kratom, I would definitely recommend going in and getting the full story from the bartenders working. One stop in and you'll soon feel like family!

Carrie M.

Yelp
Unfortunately not really my thing. The bartender was kind enough to offer us a sample of the Kava after admitting "people don't really drink it because it tastes good". In the small amount of the sample, however, i did feel some of the effect of the kava. I got some yerba mate and couldn't drink all of that either unfortunately, it was very bitter and earthy. Truthfully I enjoy drinking for the flavors and not necessarily for the effects. It would be nice if they offered some other beverages (regular teas or infused waters maybe), because it's a cool place to hang out.

Yelp
Krave is one of my favorite places in Carrboro! The drinks are great, but it's the staff that makes this place so special. So fun, friendly, and knowledgable!

Furok B.

Yelp
This is a very chill and relaxing place where I can meet friends or just do some studying. Very happy with the staffs knowledge of the products and cleanliness of the place. I would definitely tell my friends.

Tyler C.

Yelp
It was a unique experience. The bartender (Kavatender?) seemed very knowledgeable about the product and passionate about what he was serving. The effect of Kava and Kratem left me feeling relaxed and slightly euphoric, but it lasted for less than an hour. The styrofoam cups would be my only complaint. Definitely not the best for the environment, but it didn't kill the overall experience for me. I'll be back.

Anonymous V.

Yelp
This place is terrible. It's supposed to be a 'natural' spot, but it has the feeling of a grungy dive bar with low lighting, no windows, and sketchy bar tenders. Also hypocritical is their enormous use of styrofoam. Every person who walks in there and orders a drink immediately gets TWO styrofoam cups... SO BAD for the environment. This bar is not a good fit for the Carrboro vibe.

Paul B.

Yelp
I wandered into this place by accident, they don't have a sign yet. As someone who lived for some time on a Pacific island I was pleased to find a place in Carrboro serving the drink that I had learned to appreciate so much while sharing with Pacific islanders on warm nights under the stars. This place is nicely decorated and the staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. I tried the Kava, which was well prepared and quite strong. In the islands I sometimes have to drink steadily for an hour or so before feeling the desired effect, but here just two cups did it. I like the idea of an alternative to alcohol bars (not that I'm giving up alcohol). On the Pacific island where I lived the local law enforcement folks told me that there were frequent fights at the alcohol bars, but never at the kava bars. People just relax and feel like talking into the wee hours. Give it a try.

Yelp
Omg, this place is a trip. We brought a friend in town here, and had an odd 'ol time haha. They serve kava in tea form; kava is derived from a root that is common in Hawaii and other islands. It has an anesthetic effect, and a calming one. Since it was my first time trying kava, I just had 1 serving (I got the smaller cup which is $5), and my bf and friend had 2 small servings ($10 worth). I am a light weight, so I did feel some numbness in the mouth, and overall felt nice and relaxxxed :). The ambiance here is part of the trip LOL--it is one of the most Carrboro places I've ever been to. Strange psychadelic patterns or nature scenes changing on a screen, walls with wave patterns on them, and tacky chandeliers---I loved it. They also have board games, so we spent our time playing Connect 4. In addition to kava, they serve kratom, which supposedly has a more uplifting effect. Last, they serve Krush, which is a combo of kava and kratom. Oh, by the way, they have some bizarre event called "Kava with the Cops" to give you a sense of how Carrboro this place is. We will be back to satisfy our kravings..

Kristin N.

Yelp
This place is great! the bartender was very helpful and friendly since it was my first time going to a place like this, it's a great alternative to drinking.

Yelp
this place is exactly what it needs to be and better. the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the relaxing atmosphere complements the quality product.

Yelp
Love this place! Great staff that's knowledgeable and kind. Good atmosphere! Quality kava! Im hooked :-)

Sibby H.

Yelp
Found about the bar by word of mouth because most of my friends see me making this weird concoction at home. I've been drinking kava in the confines of my own home for a little over a year now and I really respect the root and its properties. I was excited to hear that a kava bar was opening in Carrboro, even though it would be a significant drive from Raleigh. I finally made my way out there a couple of weeks ago, and found it to be a real joy. The kava was potent and was of a great age, and a couple of drinks I was in a great place. I drank less than I usually make at home, however that was not a problem as I felt very in tune with my surroundings and quite relaxed. I went with a buddy who I usually drink with, and he agreed that the kava was potent. I believe I talked with the bartender for a couple hours and found out a lot of information about kava and its preparations. Not to mention our conversions were of good nature and depth, unlike many conversations when inebriated with alcohol. Along with drinking kava, I had the joy of drinking Kratom. I always heard about the herb, but made no effort to actively seek it out. I was pleased to see it on the menu, and tried it together with the kava. Most definitely kept my mind clear, not to mention it complemented well, giving the kava almost a boost for some time. Before going to the bar, I looked here for reviews and pictures. I found that the pictures do not do it justice for the openness of the back room and the overall length of the space. The music went well with the atmosphere and I would like to see customers having the ability to change it if they wanted. Just to add that extra customization that will add to the uniqueness of kava. I would also encourage people to bring a group of people and just socialize, and get below the depths of the elevator conversions that life sometimes brings. I would also want to see the bar be able to sell root powders, and become a provider for people who rather drink in the comfort of there own homes ( and for it to be cheaper ). I currently buy my kava from Hawaii, which gets costly with shipping fees, so it would be a real plus to buy so close from a reputable place. However the price of the kava here was a bit steep at the bar, but again, the kava was of the utmost quality. My lack of funds don't bring me around too often, but they do have a rewards program that is generous for users. Overall, a great place to go chill, get away from the fast lane and chill. I will say, when I was done drinking and left the bar, I felt relived and quite refreshed to be back in the "real world". I was in there for a long time :). Give it a try, it will be worth it, at least for the experience. Hope this helped some.
