"After a two-year closure, I watched the “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign flick back to life on Tuesday, October 10 when the Shaq-owned Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon Avenue reopened in brand-new Midtown digs. The twice fire-ravaged shop, which first opened in 1965 and was purchased by Shaquille O’Neal in 2016 as part of a franchise deal (he remains a partial owner), replaces the old nostalgic design with a more modern, somewhat suburban-feeling look that brings in more natural light and adds more seating inside and outside. Some of the shop’s storied past remains: the iconic Krispy Kreme sign that stood outside for nearly six decades has been restored and a mural inside nods to the former building. The Ponce location suffered two separate fires in 2021 — investigators ruled the February fire arson, and a second July fire was deemed “suspicious,” leading to demolition and reconstruction — but it has returned; while the previous site had a 24-hour drive-thru and was the only kosher-certified location within city limits at the time of the first fire, the new drive-thru will not operate 24/7 though it remains kosher certified. Hours are Sunday–Thursday 6 a.m.–10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 6 a.m.–11 p.m." - Beth McKibben
"The drive-thru Krispy Kreme pop-up at the original site of the historic doughnut shop on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown is now closed. Construction begins soon on a new Krispy Kreme location, after two fires caused major structural damage to the original building at the corner of Ponce and Argonne in 2021." - Beth McKibben
"The drive-thru Krispy Kreme pop-up shop is now open on the corner of Ponce de Leon and Argonne avenues in Midtown. The original doughnut shop, partially owned by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, was demolished in November after two fires caused major structural damage to the historic building earlier this year. The first fire was eventually ruled arson. As for the temporary pop-up shop, expect a menu of Krispy Kreme’s signature hot glazed doughnuts and other assorted classic flavors paired with bottled beverages. The drive-thru shop is open daily, starting at 7 a.m., with people asked to enter and exit the pop-up via Argonne Avenue." - Beth McKibben
"The twice fire-ravaged Krispy Kreme on Ponce De Leon Avenue in Midtown, partially owned by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, is set for demolition this week, with plans to rebuild and reopen the historic shop next year. Starting in December, the doughnut company plans to host a temporary pop-up on the site for the holidays. Little is known about just what this Krispy Kreme pop-up shop will entail or what doughnuts might be served there. According to a press release, details regarding the menu and hours, along with an opening date for the pop-up, should be released in the coming weeks. The building had been deemed “unsafe” following the February fire. Utilities to the shop were supposedly disconnected and the property fenced off at the time of the fire in July. Once rebuilt, look for a few original and refurbished design elements from the historic doughnut shop, including the sign prominently displayed on Ponce. Krispy Kreme opened on Ponce in 1965 and included a 24-hour drive-thru window. It was also the only kosher-certified Krispy Kreme location within the city of Atlanta. O’Neal purchased the landmark doughnut shop on Ponce as part of a 2016 franchise deal with the North Carolina-based doughnut chain." - Beth McKibben
"The historic Krispy Kreme location is owned by basketball legend and sports commentator Shaquille O’Neal. The doughnut shop experienced two fires, one in February and another six months later. The February fire caused catastrophic damage, gutting the back portion of the building and melting the ordering counter in the front. The cause of the February fire was ruled as arson. Despite the damages, Shaquille O’Neal and his partners vow to rebuild the landmark location." - Beth McKibben
