The Best Restaurants in Richmond, CA | Eater SF

"Sure, it’s a chain, but it’s a chain most often found hidden inside of small, mom-and-pop gas station convenience stores, and when it comes to that Southern fast-food style, the chicken gives your local Popeyes outlet a run for its money. Well-seasoned, unfailingly crunchy skin — hence the name — and sweet honey biscuits are the hallmarks here." - Eater Staff

The Best Fried Chicken in Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Sure, it’s a chain, but it’s a chain most often found hidden inside of small, mom-and-pop gas station convenience stores, and when it comes to that Southern fast-food style, the chicken gives your local Popeyes outlet a run for its money. Well-seasoned, unfailingly crunchy skin — hence the name — is the hallmark here. Most locations have always been takeout only; this one, in Richmond, has been open as usual for walk-up orders during the shelter in place, and delivery is available via several of the third-party apps." - Luke Tsai

Google
Best crispy chicken I've had had all the crispy chickens I've been too they got a 8-piece dark meat special for eight bucks for eight pieces it's totally worth it it's always fresh fried perfect the ladies are amazing the owners are very interactive with the community and anybody that comes in there every time I go there he gets better and better I'm not going to lie to women are amazing

Google
I truly believe this is the place where it first started with the Krispy crunchy chicken that first bite no KFC no church's and Popeyes can match the chicken only problem is the side orders never enough runs out quick

Nathan Pierce

Google
I don’t make it a habit to buy fried chicken from a gas station, but I might start! It’s like KFC and Popeye’s, but less stuff on the outside, more chicken on the inside. Very lightly spicy. And now they have COLES LAW! Buy gas, buy beer, buy fried chicken to go. Thanks, Mike, for bringing me. After my second visit, this quite possibly is “America’s best-kept fast-food secret.” If you choose to give a thumbs-up 👍🏽 or not, I hope you found my review helpful!

Google
Friend just FYI, the fried chicken of this store was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, bursting with flavor in every bite. The service was quick and the staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. Overall, Krispi Chicken exceeded my expectations with its delicious food and excellent service. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves great fried chicken!"

Google
Okay, I drove past this place two or three times, not realizing it was behind the gas station in a convenience store. But the chicken! It's some of the best I've ever had, and I'm a fried chicken connoisseur! It's all to go, no place to sit, but there are nice parks nearby.

Jose Rosales

Google
Gas station chicken, excellent customer service from the ladies.

Google
Some of the best fried chicken, haven't been here for a while and still tastes great!

Lawrence Santos

Google
Can't go wrong with Krispy affordable can request all thighs or all drum and you won't be charged extra. Pass on anything else that they sell my only problem with this place is that they do tend to use some past due cooked chicken but when its fresh tho you can't complain. Always a family meal so the price range is pretty affordable

Yelp
When I'm craving crispy fried chicken and have the time and courage to drive through that part of town, I head to this gas station Krispy Krunchy fried chicken spot on 23rd Street. It's so good! The chicken is crispy, tasty, and flavorful, and the few times I've been there, it's been consistently great. Since the chicken is all to go, it's perfect for busy workdays when I just need a quick dinner for the kids. They also offer side dishes like fries, though I haven't tried them yet. I usually just grab the fried chicken, cook rice at home, and serve it with banana ketchup--my kids love it. As for ambiance, there isn't any. It's a gas station, so you order your chicken through a window and take it home--no dine-in option. But honestly, the food makes it totally worth it!

Why does Yelp! keep posting duplicates of the same review.....? I don't make it a habit to buy fried chicken from a gas station, but I might start! Yelp
Thanks to other Yelpers, we tried this little hole in the wall, mini-mart, in Richmond - for better than the chain store, tender fried chicken!! I thought I was at the wrong place, to be honest. Once inside, they have a real deal set up, no-nonsense counter, and a sweet order taker who will crack a smile if you smile at her, taking your order quickly and efficiently. You then walk over to the mini-mart cashier, 4 feet to the left, and pay for your order and whatever other mini-mart grocery must have. I then waited for my order while watching how much perfectly, hot and fried, chicken was being produced behind the counter case. It didn't have time to sit under a heat lamp, it went into the container to my box within minutes. We ate a hardy meal of chicken, mash potatoes and gravy, Mac n cheese, red beans and rice, Cole slaw, fries and shrimp. Admittedly, the sides were just ok, in comparison. The flavors were there, but they were packaged beforehand and sat, so they didn't taste as fresh. You know that chicken was still crunchy and delicious eaten cold, the next day! Wow.

Yelp
Ugh I've never been inside the store so I don't know what the service is like but honestly this chicken is so buss. I just love the orange stuff inside, I stopped getting kfc and popeyes after eating a krispy krunchy thigh for the first time. Need to come back even though I dont like going in gas stations not the ambiance vibes.
google avatar

Bruce L.

Yelp
Definitely one of the better Krispy Krunchy's around town. Clean chill environment, helpful friendly staff, chicken is not super greasy and is very crispy, sides are fresh. Would've been 5 stars, but my order did not have the chicken sandwich I ordered and we were on our lunch break so we couldn't head back. Regardless, we'll be back because this spot is good and KKC always hits the spot. Especially them blueberry muffins.
google avatar

Freda B.

Yelp
That they give you your complete order when you order it. My husband had gotten chicken and biscuits with his gas and they didn't even put in the biscuits he paid for.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Disappointed to find out no more 6 piece dark meat special. They only had 1 special, 4 chicken wings for $9.99. The chicken is still good. I got a 2piece leg & thigh w/biscuit for $6..
google avatar

Maurice B.

Yelp
I did not believe in eating gas station chicken but to be honest they have some of the best chicken I have tasted and the people are very friendly and give great service
google avatar

Deborah H.

Yelp
The best chicken around. This location is always fresh and the chicken is always seasoned properly. I will drive further to come to this location. The chicken is delicious. Don't let the fact that it is inside a gas station deter you.

Yelp
Being from New Orleans, gotta love seeing some Louisiana-based fried chicken joints in the Bay Area. What's extra awesome about this spot is that they use halal chicken, which is great for those with dietary restrictions. I typically get a mixed bucket of chicken, with some biscuits, fries, and Mac n cheese. I have had their tenders and boneless wings as well, but you have to get their chicken, biscuits, and fries. You can ask them to sub drumsticks for wings if you'd like as well. They have a lot of sauce options, so ask them before you leave so you get what you need. It's at a gas station so parking is easy. Check them out!

Yelp
best. fried. chicken. EVER! also the honey biscuits here are literally some of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. Do yourself a favor and get AT LEAST the 6 pack of biscuits, because you WILL devour them. They are what I'd imagine heaven tastes like. We've picked up chicken here at least 4 or 5 times now, but I haven't written a review because I keep forgetting to take photos! But every single time has been delicious, without fail. Their fried chicken is so crispy and crunchy - it definitely lives up to its name. On top of that though, the meat inside is so juicy and flavorful - they inject cajun seasoning into the chicken so you can see the strips of orange inside too. So good! Also the chicken with some honey is also delicious for that sweet and salty flavor. Forgot to mention, you can order just dark/white meat here, or mix! We love dark and the dark is cheaper too, so we love that. Also their chicken is very reasonably priced in general! We wanted to try their cracklings as well, but they didn't have them today. We'll have to try them next time! I'm not sure if the other locations are as good as this one, but since we've had an amazing experience here every single time, we keep coming back here. Plus it's the one closest to our place! When ordering, you order at the counter but then get in line for the gas station side because you'll pay there. After you pay, you'll receive a stamped receipt which you'll redeem back at the chicken counter for your meal! While it may look sketchy because it's at a gas station (or does that make it better?), it is the best fried chicken and I guarantee you'll love it!

Yelp
Don't let this place scare you from going in YES it is GHETTO AF in here but the foodservice and chicken is what makes this place special. Had to ditch Popeyes because they serve you some tiny portions ( bad service ) Vs this place. I can't say anything bad about their fried chicken they definitely deserve 5 stars. Keep up the good service and yummy chicken! I'll keep coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Not all crispy, crunchy chicken locations are equally made. I am so glad that I happen to live by one back is considered to be one of the best. chicken is always fresh biscuits are always soft, and french fries are always hot. for ambience it is a gas station so there's not much ambience and service is pretty quick since you know we are in the hood people get route over they chicken. I just wish that they offered more specials and family packages But nonetheless hands-down I prefer this chicken over any other fast food, restaurant chicken. extra points for being within walking distance of my home.
google avatar

Ray B.

Yelp
It's almost embarrassing how good this chicken is. This is by no means a fancy location. The locals call it "gas station chicken" because of the proximity to a gas station next door. Let's face it; this place is basically a bodega/convenience store. The chicken isn't even their main product, but they do it really well for some reason. I will repeat. BB

Ashley D.

Yelp
Food tasted good Very oily But the staff were very friendly!! They even gave my daughter who is one a couple fries while we waited

Amanda L.

Yelp
The biscuits are soooo good! Chicken is always crunchy. Super cheap for a ton of food
google avatar

Kerry C.

Yelp
Krispy Krunchy is my go to chicken, it always tastes fresh and the price is right. Must be the seasoning.
google avatar

Victor G.

Yelp
this Krispy Krunchy resides in a Golden 7 gas station. eats: fried chicken sandwich (3.49) -reasonable price. slightly too much batter -semi juicy/dry, maybe as good as chain equivalents, cheaper gotta try popeye's when it's available. crumbs: -chicken tastes better from a grocery than a gas station.... parking may be more difficult.

Yelp
without fail, this is one of the best fried chicken you'll *ever* have. Best described as: reliably crispy with moist interior flavor, crunchy exterior, and the general after taste of happiness. You'll never go wrong with Kripsy Krunchy kitchen. And no, don't bother going to another place. This specific location is the way to go (I've been to the one in El Sobrante and Pinole - just not the same, unfortunately, and both locations seem perpetually out of hot sauce - whhhhaaaattt?). Tips: *Sunday morning and afternoons = most crowded because the locals know where the good food is at. Be prepared for parking problems and long lines, but you'll see a long line of local patrons dressed in their Sunday best. *Don't bother with the sides. Come on, you can make mac and cheese at home or grab french fries from the McDonalds' across the street. Just go straight for the Krispy Krunchy Chicken and you'll thank me later. *Bring cash. They seem to appreciate it instead of credit (I think its slower to process?). Or was it that they only accept debit, not credit? I can't remember specifically why, but bring cash so you don't run into the same problems I did. *embrace the location and everything around it. Its part of the experience. Remember, you're order to-go and eating at home or at a local park or picnic with your friends, not at the place where you're buying it. There's no tables there, so complaining about the location does no good. Enjoy!

Yelp
Assuming you don't mind that Krispy is located inside the gas station, then you'll be in a great position to enjoy the following pros: 1. Their hours: My friend and I were craving some fresh hot fried chicken but at 9:45pm on a weekday, you really don't have many options. Most KFCs and Churches nearby are gonna close before we can get to them and Lucky's deli is long closed....after consulting our trusty Yelp app, we find that Krispy Krunchy is open until 11pm. Awwwww yeaaaaaaaaa, buddy. We're in business! 2. Those biscuits: Sure we started a few cups of white rice cooking on the rice cooker before we left, but hey... nothing goes with fried chicken like MORE CARBS. YASSSS. Perhaps a little on the small side, and not really crispy on the edges, but they are oh. so. soft. Like wow, these babies have been soaking up some good brushes of honey and butter because whoa they are loaded with some seriously sweet, buttery goodness. Mhhmmm! 3. That chicken: Aside from the surprising variety of dipping sauces available, I think my favorite way to eat the fried goodness is... plain. LOL! The fried breading is crispy and not overly oily or abrasive. The chicken itself is tender but not too saturated with saline solution...just tastefully salted. I don't eat fried chicken often enough to vouch for whether it's better or worse than XYZ's chicken...but I will say I would be happy to eat from Krispy Krunchy again and again! ^__^
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Who would have known?!? Biscuits...literally god's gift to the world. Butter and honey all melted on top. Drooool. MUST HAVE! Chicken tenders & fried chicken: it was good. No great. Nice flaky skin. I would have liked more seasoning on it. I do like that it's normal sized pieces of chicken... Unlike the gmo oversized kfc chicken. Fries were good. Crispy n seasoned on the outside. Soft inside. Wish the 12pc chix n 6pc tender meal I got included other sides tho.

Yelp
Incredible chicken. Ignore the location (its in a gas station convenience store); its incredible chicken. Trust the process. Get yourself a couple 40s, get a ton of chicken, and extra biscuits. I don't fully understand why this place is inside a gas station convenience store but its probably one of the best ways to improve your day, late night, whatever. The chicken falls off the bone and the breading is perfectly fried. It won't crumble easily like some lesser fried chickens. Its also pretty cheap, especially when you get a lot of chicken, which you're going to want to do because if you share a piece with someone they're just going to keep taking until there's none left. The hot sauce they give you with the chicken is exactly what you want. Some people might knock the rating down for its location, but honestly any place that will let you buy alcohol to quench your thirst while you're eating this tasty chicken is doing god's work.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
You wouldn't think chicken coming out of a gas station would receive 4 stars would you? I wouldn't either but this hole in the wall chicken joint is well worth the trip. Eats: 8 piece dark meat ($6) - batter was just right, not too much and not too little. -batter was coated perfectly onto the chicken -carried the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. -it was deliciously greasy, but not too greasy....because who wants their fried chicken dry? -carried a flavorful punch of Cajun seasoning but didn't take away from the flavor of the chicken itself -for 6 dollars?! Best deal in town for fried chicken
google avatar

Tommy G.

Yelp
This is a bit of a rough neighborhood but it's some damn good chicken & biscuits. I got the super family pack for about $25 as a present for a friend and it was something like 12 pieces of chicken (mixed), a bunch of boneless chicken tenders, some fat potato fries, and a bunch of honey biscuits. I struggled all the way home with the smell wafting up from the back and nearly pulled over to sneak a bit. Turned out my buddy mixed up his text telling me where he was going to be and I was basically stuck eating the entire thing myself. Yum.
google avatar

Donna V.

Yelp
Deliciously juicy fried chicken. Unfortunately, they didn't have the waffle fries as advertised. They were some other type of straight fry. Aside from the fry situation, Krispy Krunchy actually leaves a good taste in my mouth unlike other fast food chicken places (i.e. KFC, Church's). Doesn't have a place to sit considering it IS at a gas station, so I sat at one of the two benches just across the street. Side Note: I normally don't enjoy biscuits at all, but these were delightful.
google avatar

Sanovia J.

Yelp
If you're into some good fried chicken skip all the other fast food chains and head over to your local gas station for the real stuff. Yes I said it a gas station serves up hot and fresh fried chicken with honey biscuits that will make your mouth water. This is my favorite place to get fried chicken outside of making it for myself at home. Why? It's seasoned well, doesn't have all the extra grease and is cooked until golden brown. It literally reminds you of homemade fried chicken! And let's not even talk about how these biscuits are the best biscuits ever! I mean they are my all time favorite of all time all time! Did I say all time? Please do not pass up the opportunity to take a box of this over a friends for a get together or just staying in for the night. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Pansy K.

Yelp
Tasty chicken with nice spice and light batter. Tasted freshly made. I think that it is as good as Popeyes which I find inconsistent.
google avatar

Pritika M.

Yelp
Halal fry chicken that to in richmond, whatttttt gosh I wish i had known about this place before. It's located inside a gas station, not one of the best neighborhoods to go alone at night but other times it's okay. Got the family meal, 12 chicken 6 tenders biscuits and fries for $28 something. The chicken is really good guys. You won't regret going here for the food.

Lulu G.

Yelp
Best HALAL Fried chicken in town, chicken is fresh and hot all the time everything is made daily
google avatar

Renate V.

Yelp
Catch the fried chicken when it's fresh and it's the bomb.com. If you get a large order, like for a group, they will usually make it fresh for you. Skip the sauces. Skip the buffalo wings. The fish is very decent, too. I sometimes bring the fish dinner home for my son. Sometimes you just have to live and get something deep-fried. Simple as that. Very nice people running the place.
google avatar

raquel b.

Yelp
I tried it out and it was bad. I don't understand what people like about the fried chicken. It was horrible! I thought to give it a shot since there is not a lot of variety here in Richmond and I love fried chicken. But It was NOT worth it! Sure, the chicken was crispy but they had a weird, funky and slimy taste to them. I don't know if they cleaned them properly or they just drenched them and threw them in the fryer, but it made me sick. I couldn't eat it again, I had to throw it away. It was a waste of money. Do not under any circumstance try their chicken.
google avatar

Shirley J.

Yelp
The food is good. Im a customer service person so the rudeness took away a star. Everyone that walks in is not a druggie or thug...don't treat us that way..and I'm more so referencing the males at the register.
google avatar

Humaira M.

Yelp
Customer service is great! Time from order to delivery is great! Kripsy Krunchy Chicken is mouthwatering and Halal!
google avatar

amy a.

Yelp
Really good fry chicken and those biscuits are amazing. The great thing about this place is that its halal chicken which is rare to find in the bay area. I onky wish the the restaurant was its own place and not in a gas station. But hey whatever works as long as they stay open. **update, no longer halal chicken
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
Holy cow for gas station fried chicken its the best. Skip the other stuff... its all about the dark meat, and its cheaper than the white.
google avatar

Gorgeous P.

Yelp
Not sure what happened here. I've heard good things about this place and decided to give it a try because I love chicken. It's my favorite meal. I only tried 1 piece of this chicken. It was a little salty, not tasty, not nasty, but my stomach HATED it. I immediately got sick after eating this chicken and barely barely barely made it to the bathroom. Okay I didn't make it! I had a far drive and... My friend got strips and he had no problem so I don't get it.
google avatar

NaKita H.

Yelp
This is such a hidden gem! The location is a little sketchy (inside of a gas station, in a not so great part of town) but I highly recommend trying it out. The chicken definitely lives up to its name, Krispy Krunchy. The seasoned fries are so good too. I'm not a big biscuit fan but they drizzle theirs with honey and they looked really good. In my opinion the chicken is better than Popeye's and KFC. I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't have any spicy chicken.
google avatar

Shaione S.

Yelp
First time getting food from here as it was recommended from a coworker. I must say, I was quite surprised that the food was good. We ordered the family tender with fries and biscuits. I think the tenders could have been cooked a little more, they weren't as crispy as I would have liked them. The fries were pretty good and my favorite were the biscuits. They were pretty good, especially with the honey in them I would suggest when you get the tenders to ask them to fry them crispy and that would put the touch on it. Their home sauce was good too! Great to eat with both the tenders and the fries.
google avatar

Angellica S.

Yelp
HONESTLY, I NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD EVER SAY THIS, BUT HERE GOES... GAS STATION CHICKEN IS THE BEST. My colleagues brought chicken and biscuits from Krispy Krunchy a few months ago, and every single person was asking and raving about it - it was SO good, especially the honey biscuits and the Cajun chicken tenders. Wow, I don't think I can get chicken tenders this meaty and fresh from anywhere else. I always take off the crispy skin (I know you're asking "then, what's the point?" - well, the point is that I don't want to work out extra hard after eating that, lol), but you if you like crispy, then it's perfect here. Four big pieces of chicken tenders (with two sauces) and a biscuit cost me $6.34. Additional sauce will cost you .50 cents extra, but you really only need two sauces (the original sauce and the bar-b-que sauce are all you need). This place blows Chick-fil-A away! Although I'm unsure about the neighborhood, it appeared safe enough during the day. Always be aware of your surrounding wherever you are!

Yeymi R.

Yelp
Old dried up chicken that's been sitting in the warmer more than half a day the manager the biggest loser in there was really rude my husband went in and ask for $8.99 deal he had horrible customer service he didn't even greet him no smile on his face just rude personality I waited in the car with my kids my kid couldn't even swallow the chicken that's how hard it was I went back inside asked for fresh chicken he said no there's nothing I can do we have a no return policy. All I want was fresh chicken I didn't want my money back horrible experience.

Char T.

Yelp
Not sure where my orignal review went for this place, but the chicken tasted great, just felt like it should be cooked longer. The meat was chewy and suspect for my party wings. The customer service isn't that great. Guys at the register are rude. I left my soda there after I paid for it and they didn't even bother to let me know or accommodate me when I brought it up the next few days when I came back to buy more chicken. Oh and they charge you 75 cents for ranch smh and I had to get back in the long lane to pay for it after I had already paid for my chicken. Customer is big for me so I will NOT be back.
google avatar

Arsala K.

Yelp
Fried chicken from a gas station? Sounds like the beginning of a bad case of indigestion but no, this place serves up some delicious halal fried chicken. The Cajun tenders were juicy and the breading just right. The fried chicken had some skin that was maybe a little over done but the meat inside was still good and well cooked. And the honey biscuits were soft and delicious. Definitely would recommend. Just don't be scared to get out of the car ;)
google avatar

Richie R.

Yelp
Always good eats here when stopping for gas! Not a long wait and amazing taste! I always get some whenever I have to stop and get gas! Just irresistible! I love this place and the people are always sooo nice to me! I for sure recommend this chicken.
google avatar

Sonny H.

Yelp
Two stars my friend, because my 16 piece chicken box had 6 chicken wings and mostly thighs pieces and 2 breast pieces. Seriously seems very Not proportional to the pieces a chicken would have. Coronal sanders would like to discuss business practices and possibly exchange recipes. I'm not condoning anyone from going to this business, chicken was very good for fried chicken! I would give it probably 4 stars if the buying experience was a bit better and I had gotten at the minimum an appropriate mix of pieces, but seriously I felt a bit screwed. Suggest buying not by the number of variety pieces but designate the type of pieces. (Ex. Breast , thigh, leg)
google avatar

Gerri G.

Yelp
Not sure why the negative reviews, I've lived in Richmond for several years, nothing bothers me! Yes rough neighborhood, but, talk to people, smile, get your chicken, and be on your way! They also have great customer service
google avatar

Chrissy V.

Yelp
This is the best damn fried chicken I have ever had!!! And simosas. Fresh crunchy and hot.
google avatar

Allan H.

Yelp
Ths place is kinda sketchy and can get hectic but the chicken tenders are the BOMB! Super juicy and perfectly cooked every time Ive been.
google avatar

Lina L.

Yelp
I have a legit fried chicken addiction. I'd like to consider myself a connoisseur of it. This is hands down THE BEST I've had so far, even better than my momma's (but she doesn't need to know that). My parents used to own a fried chicken shack so I have cred. I am currently interning at the Kaiser in Richmond and I had my first taste of this delectable guilty pleasure at a potluck. Nurses love potlucks, and nurses love good food. These nurses are all addicts of this crack-chicken and that's when my love affair with "gas station chicken" began. Is it wrong that chicken this good comes from a gas station??! Who gives a shit, this is the real deal. Don't judge til you've had it. I had the two piece White meat with jambalaya. The chicken breast was juicy and perfectly seasoned and the skin was heaven but hell at the same time. I'll worry about my arteries later, like when I'm 40. For now, c'est la vie!!! The biscuits...what biscuits? It's like eating air cuz they're so fluffy and buttery. They really do melt in your mouth. The jambalaya was ok, a bit mushy for my taste. I'm Chinese, I like to see my rice granules ;) but that chicken doeee...mmmmmm mmmm mmmmmm. DO IT!

Yelp
Your gut will tell you not to order fried chicken from a gas station but believe me when I say it'll surely thank you for stuffing it with this krispy krunchy goodness. Not only is the chicken amazing but the sides are the bomb too.
