Yelp
I heard about this place through the South Side Weekly, which has generally done a great job of steering me in food directions (and other directions, it's a great paper). I also was familiar with the place because I think I've walked by the Pilsen spot that they used to own (they've since sold it and opened this one in McKinley Park) and have seen the name of their bakery many times. I didn't realize how close to me this place was until I was walking home from yummy gorditas, and even though I wasn't hungry, I knew my belly (and my heart) would appreciate me later for grabbing a yummy slice of cake as a snack for the afternoon.
They mostly had different kinds of tres leches cakes, although I think I noticed they also sell tamales and some other desserts. I wasn't sure what I wanted because everything looked delicious, so I chatted with the guy behind the counter who turned out to be the owner. Apparently, when they first started out, Kristoffer was a baby who they named their bakery for, and now he's old enough to be making these cakes himself. I love a good family-owned business. I let him guide me through their selection, and ultimately he recommended the rumchata tres leches cake. I love horchata, and solidly like rumchata, and this was delicious. You could definitely taste the rum, but not in an overpowering way if you're not a big fan of rum. I definitely want to try their other flavors.
I honestly feel a little bad because the owner said if I see you back again, I'll know you like it, and I haven't been back because if I ate their cake as much as I wanted, I'd balloon. So please - go for me!
