Best restaurants in McKinley Park | Eater Chicago

"The original Kristoffer’s in Pilsen was famous for its tres leches cakes, praised by the likes of Diana Dávila and Rick Bayless before owners Carlos and Cristina Chavarria sold the place and moved to Florida to open a bakery there. But after just a few years of sunshine, they returned and opened Kristoffer’s Cakes in McKinley Park. They still serve tres leches, but they’ve branched out into other cakes, and have experimented with gluten-free and keto baking." - Aimee Levitt

Google
I tried coconut tres leches and mango, both are really good but coconut takes the crown, they taste like a traditional Mexican cake, owner is super friendly, clean place! Really recommend this place. The only thing or issue for me for not for all people, the cake was a little sweet for me! Support local business

J&C Travels

Google
Vanilla tres leche, oreo tres leche and flan were delicious! They were all the right level of sweetness and had me going back for me. Can’t wait to try their other flavors!

Andrea Sanchez

Google
Best 3 leches cake we’ve had! Thank you for your service. One day before my son’s birthday, I remembered I needed a good cake. I found Kristoffer’s website, placed an order for next day pickup and everything was great!

Rolo

Google
Arguably the best tres leches in the whole Chicagoland. They make many variations of this Mexican traditional cake but they were all amazing. I tried 3 variants: traditional vanilla, caramel and rompope (tequila liquer). Well worth the visit and need to try many more of their offering (eg oreo tres leches). The owner is very friendly and the store is quaint but inviting!! Visit this Pilsen landmark!!

Google
Beautiful cakes which taste even better than they look! Which is impressive because they are made very delicately. They have multiple flavors of Tres Leches cakes. Continue to purchase cakes from here.

Google
Recently enjoyed a delightful experience at Kristoffer's Cakes! I treated my mom to a scrumptious coconut tres leches cake for her birthday, and it was truly one of the finest I've ever had. The coconut flavor was rich, and the sweetness was perfectly balanced. Kristoffer went the extra mile by creating a second cake just to include a personalized birthday message. Even when they initially ran out of the coconut tres leches cake, he ensured I had one ready within an hour. I've also savored the Abuelita tres leches, a delightful twist with chocolate Abuelita. Each cake boasts a unique and delicious taste, making them all worth a try. Conveniently, they offer single-slice portions.

Google
Making my rounds of trying all these tres leches, nothing but perfect, hands down the best I’ve had, coconut is beyond amazing, still going to try the others though! Reading these reviews some people are funny claiming the cake is “too sweet” etc I’ve served a whole party this cake not one person had anything negative to say, it’s “cake” when is it not sweet? Maybe you can go find a “sugar free” bakery, keep up the great job you guys are amazing!!

Google
The coconut tres leches cake was AMAZING! First time the cake ever finished at a party for us. Everyone was asking where it was from definitely trying different flavor!!

Yelp
A great little bakery with super friendly staff. If you like tree leches (or if you've never tried tres leches) this is really the spot for you! They sell whole cakes, custom cakes, a bunch of flavors of individual cake slices, and even some baking supplies. I love getting individual slices with friends so that everyone can get their favorite. They also have rotating flavors so you won't get bored.

Yelp
I came from out of town to celebrate my fiancés birthday and was looking for a good place that sells tres leches and I'm soooo glad I chose this location! Definitely the best tres leches cake we've ever had! Even from the beginning, the customer service was outstanding. This place is beyond a 5 star

Yelp
Since I found this business, it has never let me down. This is my Togo place when I have a birthday party, anniversary, and special holidays. I recommend the tres leches- coconut! It's 10000/10

Yelp
I love this Tres Leche cake and so do all my friends and family! I don't live close, but it is worth the long drive. You can never go wrong with the classic vanilla, I have had nearly all the other flavors. My second favorite flavor is definitely the cappuccino. I will be back to try the rest soon.

Yelp
I recently moved into the area and was thinking of what take to a friend's for dinner. I saw the bakery was in walking distance and specialized in Tres Leche cakes. It was an easy decision. I grabbed 2 abuelitas, 1 cappuccino, 1 coco, 1 chocolate, and a chocoflan. Christina, the owner, es una maravilla. She's really friendly and attentive. Walking in, that bright shop, you feel her orgullo to her patria. You can taste it too. This is truly a different Tres Leche cake. Do yourself the favor and stop by for a slice or 3. It's a whole mood. I'll say this. The slices were placed on plates, forks were everywhere and then it's was done. I'll obviously be back.

Yelp
Came here based on the recommendation from a couple of employees at Walgreens down the street. Got a cup of coffee and a slice of the coconut tres leches cake. OMFG, that cake is phenomenal!! Moist, flavorful, and you can tell it's made with love! I don't even want to know how many calories I just ate. Staff is also very nice here and I can tell they work hard. I highly recommend stopping by here soon!

Yelp
This is the place I use as my local coffee shop and it's great. Their flan is incredible I usually get a cake top though. Their coffee is also excellent and the two owners and very friendly and helpful

Yelp
I heard about this place through the South Side Weekly, which has generally done a great job of steering me in food directions (and other directions, it's a great paper). I also was familiar with the place because I think I've walked by the Pilsen spot that they used to own (they've since sold it and opened this one in McKinley Park) and have seen the name of their bakery many times. I didn't realize how close to me this place was until I was walking home from yummy gorditas, and even though I wasn't hungry, I knew my belly (and my heart) would appreciate me later for grabbing a yummy slice of cake as a snack for the afternoon. They mostly had different kinds of tres leches cakes, although I think I noticed they also sell tamales and some other desserts. I wasn't sure what I wanted because everything looked delicious, so I chatted with the guy behind the counter who turned out to be the owner. Apparently, when they first started out, Kristoffer was a baby who they named their bakery for, and now he's old enough to be making these cakes himself. I love a good family-owned business. I let him guide me through their selection, and ultimately he recommended the rumchata tres leches cake. I love horchata, and solidly like rumchata, and this was delicious. You could definitely taste the rum, but not in an overpowering way if you're not a big fan of rum. I definitely want to try their other flavors. I honestly feel a little bad because the owner said if I see you back again, I'll know you like it, and I haven't been back because if I ate their cake as much as I wanted, I'd balloon. So please - go for me!

Yelp
First of all this place has fantastic service. I walked in & the gentleman there greeted me with a smile & he just gave the best service ever. I placed an order for pickup & my order was ready at the exact time I chose. No earlier no later. The cake was even better. I was so excited to try it because of the good reviews and the reviews were right. The cake was so good it was the perfect consistency and had a lot of flavor. I tried the vanilla tres leches and it was so good. I also had the horchata latte which was also fantastic. Will definitely go back and this time try new flavors of the tres leches. Great service + great food!! :)

Yelp
holy sh*t went there at ~2PM and ordered hoechata and americano and a chocolate covered tres leches cake and holy sh*t. great service, they offered to write a message on the cake and i declined. in hindsight, I should have asked them to put "Chicagoland's Best Tres Leches" in bold letters on the top. alas, I didn't realize what i was getting until i had it. they also gave us complimentary cake tops that they shave off to make the tres leches. it went perfectly with the horchata. and i mean literally perfectly. I could have that drink/cake combo every day of the week. im not exaggerating.

Yelp
Love at first sight and bite--Kristoffer's Cakes, a Cafe and Bakery is my new love interest!! Since I noticed Kristoffer's on Yelp a few months ago, I have been wanting to stop by. After I left the McKinley Park Farmers Market, I decided to take some photos for my review of the neighborhood. I figured I would work my way east to Kristoffer's. While taking photos of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, which is a half block south of Kristoffer's, I met up with a friend. Turns out she had just left Kristoffer's! Not only did my friend sing the praises of this newer neighborhood Cafe and Bakery, she walked back to the Cafe with me. She introduced me to THE Kristoffer. He is the son of the owners and a very nice young man. I also met the owners. Everyone was so very nice and welcoming. The Cafe itself is roomy and comfortable and has a nice vibe. There are tables along an aisle that leads to the back of the Cafe. There is a party/meeting room straight back and the restrooms are to the right. The ladies room was very pleasant and for those of you like myself and my Yelper friend, Ted K--they have paper towels! NICE, quality paper towels! My friend recommended - - EVERYTHING! I decided on the Breakfast Croissant with egg and cheese and it was quite tasty and satisfying. I also wanted COFFEE - - and was quite delighted to find out that a 10 Oz. cup of coffee is FREE with the breakfast sandwich! And it was a VERY good cup of coffee. : ) With beautiful weather, a great morning and this fine lunch at Kristoffer's could my day get any better?? Oh, yeah! - - I got a slice of Carrot Cake to take home- - and happily devoured it when I got there!! The Carrot Cake was sooo good! A great way to end a perfect day!

Yelp
I have been doing keto for over a year and my birthday was coming up. I searched for a keto bakery in the city and Kristoffer's Cakes came up. I ordered the keto chocoflan, the keto raspberry cheesecake and keto bagels. I can say that all of the keto baked goods where delicious and my family couldn't even tell They where keto. Everything was a hit, we loved the chocoflan and the cheesecake, I haven't had such tasty treats in a long time. I will be buying keto treats from Kristoffer's cakes as long as they have them, thanks for making a healthier version of such delicious desserts
google avatar

Yelp
I love stopping by Kristoffer's to get a quick treat whenever I'm having a sugar craving. They are always stocked in various kinds of tres leches slices, cookies, muffins, and all sorts of other pastries. The staff is always welcoming and ready to answer any questions. It's nice to have a local bakery like this in Mckinley Park.

Shelly M.

Yelp
Love the service, love the cakes, I recommend them to everyone that I know. I will find any excuse to go buy a whole cake, it's that good!

Yelp
I've been there twice so far and can't say enough great things about this new addition to the neighborhood! On my first visit I tried the Abuelita tres leches cake and the chocoflan. The abuelita cake was amazing! Perfect amount of tres leches in it and topped with a light whip cream! The chocolate part of the chocoflan was moist and so fresh! On my second visit I had the Rumchata tres leches cake. Again..it was amazing! Tasted exactly like rumchata, so if you are a fan of that you will love this cake. I also bought the mint chocolate chip tres leches cake. It's a little on the richer side and very chocolatey, which was perfect for me! Both times the lady owner helped me and she was so nice! They also sell cookies, muffins, tamales and a few other things. I haven't had a chance to try any of it yet besides the tres leches cake. You will not regret going there!

Adalia S.

Yelp
I was in Chicago for a week on vacation and ordered a rumchata tres leches cake for my friends birthday. When ordered online, the process was very easy and clear. Unfortunately, my train got delayed and I had to call to change the pick up time to the next morning. The person on the phone was super kind and understanding, and when i arrived for pickup the next morning the woman at the counter knew exactly who i was. The pick up process was easy and she gave us advice on how to serve the cake and provided us with a serving knife/spatula. The cake itself was absolutely delicious. It didn't taste at all like the flavors were fighting against the rumchata. The slight liquor taste was well incorporated and added to the overall deliciousness. My friends and I all loved it. Would love to order from them again on a future trip!

Yelp
Had never heard of this place until a friend had us over for dinner and introduced us to their outstanding strawberry tres Leche cake. It is so very good! Tasty, moist, delicious all words to describe. I drove 25 minutes to find this gem and it was well worth the effort. They have an assortment of flavors by the slice to choose from. I also tried the coconut and it was awesome. I called ahead to special order the strawberry. You can also place orders online. Very friendly and helpful service! You are in for a treat!
google avatar

Jac K.

Yelp
Chefs Bayless and Davila recommend Kristoffer's Tres Leches. I will now have a benchmark to compare other versions to, delicioso!
google avatar

Asil A.

Yelp
They are so professional and very accommodating. Their tres leches cake is absolutely divine!! I refuse to order from any other place. The best tres leches I've ever had. They service to a few restaurants around the city so you'll know their cake when you eat it. I order at least once a week. Love this place!
google avatar

Ica F.

Yelp
The staff at Kristoffer's was so friendly and accommodating! We needed a cake for a camping trip and since we couldn't refrigerate it had to be non-tres leches. They made us a delicious chocolate cake with strawberry filling, colorful sprinkles and homemade frosting. Everyone loved it! We also are lactose intolerant so although the tres leches cake is amazing, it's nice to know they have alternative cakes. We will be ordering from them for celebrations from now on! Oh and their tamales, croissants and cookies are also worth a visit.
google avatar

Ana O.

Yelp
I can not emphasize enough how great the service and cakes are from here! I ordered the 10-inch abuelita flavored tres leches and it was a huge hit. I've had many tres leches cakes and Kristoffer's has the best. Sooo many people came up to me and told me it was one of the, if not the, best cakes they've ever had. I was so happy with it. Their service while ordering and picking up the cake was nice and uncomplicated too. The location is a small and cozy bakery. Will continue ordering from them for all the cake occasions.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
The locale is very clean and have a variety of tres leches cakes, which are delicious. Highly recommend them. They will customize cakes too however I found the perfect cake, just added some blueberries to add fresh fruit. Birthday girl was very pleased as she enjoys making this type of cake too.
google avatar

Noredia A.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of tasting 2 flavors of tres leches cake, Mayan hot chocolate and keto bagels that they make. Absolutely delicious! I have found my new favorite hole in the wall in Chicago. Also had the opportunity to meet the delightful couple who own this lovely shop, tastefully decorated. Without a doubt, the BEST tres leches cake you will ever put in your mouth. Thank me later :-)
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
What a wonderful addition to McKinley Park. The desserts are amazing, my family has tried at least 80 percent of their cakes, brownies and muffins. The addition of the tamales give me an excuse to stop by weekly. We've tried the Chicken and the Corn. Can't wait to try the Abuelita Tamale. Stop by you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
I'm totally a fan! My favorite had to be the RumChata tres leches slice. They also have great breakfast sandwiches. I remember walking up to the door about 5 minutes after closing time and Kris opened the door without hesitation. At no time did he make me feel bad about coming at the last minute. At that, he was as friendly as always, asking me if I wanted to try some of the samples that they had out for customers to try out. Love this place and definitely recommend, if you live or if you visit the neighborhood often definitely try Kristoffer's Cakes
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Low key bakery at the corner. Lovely decoration inside. All kinds of tre leches cakes ,if you are a fan of those you gotta try this place. Very nice and welcoming people too. A small local business that adds value to the neighborhood. Best time to come is in the afternoon after you study for hours in the library (2 blocks away) because you deserve a nice cup of coffee with some sweet .

Yelp
Stopped by to get a tres leches cake yesterday for my mother in law. Also picked up a couple blueberry muffins, a couple brownies and an apple juice! A nice lady, apparently a regular, told me ALL the cakes are wonderful, she's had them all. My mother in law says the cake we gave her was very good, and she knows good tres leche! I didn't get to try that cake but I'll definitely stop by again for a slice and some coffee! The muffins and brownies were delicious as well and the place was very clean. They also serve other pastry items, a small lunch menu, coffee and various beverages. There's plenty of seating and what looks like a party area in the back (I didn't ask.) Definitely looking forward to supporting this McKinley Park business!
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I ordered a vanilla with chocolate frosting and a coconut tres leches cakes for my sister's shower. The cakes looked beautiful!! Everyone, including my mom ( who makes a delicious tres leches cake) raved about how moist and delicious they were. The cakes were just the right amount of moist. Not dry and not soggy...they were perfect! I received several requests the next day for Kristoffer's contact. There was a bit of a confusion with ther place on 18th, but it was cleared up. The owners were great to work with and took my last minute order. I will definitely order my cakes from them in the future.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I've been waiting for a legit coffee shop to open up since moving to McKinley Park 3 years ago and it's finally here. Really excited to see this family business thrive. They're serving up a small menu of coffee/espresso drinks and some out of this world homemade pastries and cakes. Skip the Dunkin' Donuts down the street and spend your money at a small business, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Carina T.

Yelp
What a lovely addition to the neighborhood. I have been wanting to check it out for sometime now and finally got a chance to today. I bought two slices of cake, coconut tres leches and coconut tres leches. Sooooooo good! The gentleman there was kind enough to help me choose. It was so clean and welcoming in there I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
This has quickly become one of our favorite spots. Family friendly, kind staff and super clean. Adhere to all co-vid precautions. As with many other places they've had to reduce their menu but the kept my favorites. The kids love the carrot cake, chocolate chip cookies, and cake tops. My husband and I love the coffee and keto cheesecake. We even ordered a whole keto strawberry cheesecake for my birthday thinking we'd freeze half. but it's so delicious and keeps well so it never saw the freezer :) I'm happy to support small local business especially during these times but Kristopher's makes it easy to keep coming back

Mark B.

Yelp
Kristoffer's went out of their way to get a birthday cake to our son at his college apartment. We worked with them to get the order through a food delivery service (we are out of state). The delivery company cancelled the order at the last minute, but Cristina at Kristoffer's jumped on and made it right for us. Our son got a delicious cappuccino tres leches cake in time for his birthday celebration. Could not be happier with our experience. Cake, we were told, was the best! Thanks again, Kristoffer's Cakes and Cristina for saving the day. We look forward to coming to the bakery to sample more of your stuff the next time we are in Chicago.

Yelp
This place was on my list of places to check out. Unfortunately due to the Covid 19 I was unable to dine in but was able to order take out. My sister is a fan of 3 leches so I decided to order the RumChata flavor. Everyone loved the cake, flavor was on point! I also enjoyed it even though I'm not a fan of 3 leches. I would like to also mention the great penmanship. Staff there was very friendly which is a plus in my book.

Mirella M.

Yelp
My daughter bought me a mini choco-flan and a slice of vanilla tres leches and it was delicious. We decided to get my moms birthday cake And ordered the vanilla tres leches cake, we devoured it. A few days later ordered the caramel tres leches for my dads birthday and it was also delicious. I wish it was open a little later so I could have time to stop by after work but now I know the hours and can stop by during the weekend to get my craving.
google avatar

Janina F.

Yelp
This cake was AMAZING!! Funny story is I'm glad I didn't order from the other location with the similar name because I accidentally went there first to pick up my cake and realized I was at the wrong place. I bought a piece of their cake just to see who's better. Well as you see, Kristoffer's Cakes won hands down!!

Bilal B.

Yelp
We were picking up a cake and arriving five minutes after closing. A girl named Christina on the other end of the phone call was extremely passive aggressive with us mentioning the things she needs to do after her shift and in the worst tone. Considering that there are other reviews mentioning her treating other customers the same way- I'm not sure why she still works there. If this is the #1 Chicago bakery for tres leches they should probably learn how to communicate to customers in a manner that is welcoming and polite. Kristoffers cafe and bakery on halsted has amazing tres leches, staff, and customer care. The way we were spoken to was not profession whatsoever and we felt extremely unwelcome. Hopefully people catch on and start shopping elsewhere.

Akina O.

Yelp
I just moved into the neighborhood and I stop in with my service dog and I was removed, told that I had to go , after staying outside to wait until they was open , as the looked at me 5 min later Rudeness

Yelp
Keto Cheesecake at Thanksgiving dinner was a big hit even with the non keto guests. It was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to buy again! Definitely recommend and worth $40.

Angie M.

Yelp
If you want to taste a super delicious tres leches cake ! This is the place ...after being their customer for so many years I highly reccomend this place to anyone who knows how to appreciate quality! That's what they do here , quality and variety of tres leches cakes !
google avatar

Danny K.

Yelp
Do you enjoy tres leches cake? Then Kristoffers is worth the visit, the drive, the flight, the horse ride, whatever your means of transportation. Solid quality, consistent taste and they have other fresh baked goods if tres leches isn't your thing. Before or afterwards jump to Archer Ave and try the many excellent taco places.
google avatar

Edgar C.

Yelp
I'm not gonna go into huge detail and give you some crazy long explanation as to why you should come try this place out. If you want great tres leches cake....come get some here. Want some sweet corn tamales that are awesome? Come get some here. If you're in the area.....COME TRY IT OUT! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Cristina Z.

Yelp
The best place to get choco flan and tres leche The family that own it are so very nice.

Carmen Q.

Yelp
Buyer beware. This is not the Kristoffer's on 19th Street. Very deceptive to have their name so close that it comes up on search engines first. Tried to cancel an order after realizing that I had the wrong place and they would not accept cancellation. Would never buy anything from this place.
google avatar

lupe r.

Yelp
My baby girl LOVES the chocolate chip cookies! Friendly staff, local family owned business. What's not to love? Stop by for KETO BAGELS!

German P.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Their cakes are so flavorful soft and delicious you can taste every bite! They have wonderful customer service and the place itself is well kept. Cake slices are always fresh and moist.

Yelp
I ordered a cake for this Sunday and when walking by -what I thought was Krostoffer's- i noticed it was closed due to Covid 19. I thought a simple call would clear things up. I called the number associated with my order and asked about the cake I ordered, whether it would still be available. There was no issue with the order, it would be ready this sunday. The issue seemed to be that i had mistaken kristoffer's cafe for kristoffer's cakes and the woman spent the duration of the call making sure i felt like a complete idiot for making that mistake. She told me to look at the sign and read what is says. She condescendingly asked what street i was on. She kept asking if i ordered a cake with kristoffer's cakes or kristoffer's cafe. She said she didn't understand my confusion: one is cakes; the other, cafe. Needless to say, I canceled the order. Absolutely no reason for her attitude, no matter how many times people make the mistake. You simply say, "i'm sorry you must be thinking about a different cafe. This is kristoffer's cakes and yes, your cake will be ready sunday."

Leslie G.

Yelp
The staff is really friendly and welcoming. Once you enter, you're welcomed by a fridge with doesn't types of cakes and slices. They have different choices ranging from coconut trees leches till cappuccino tres leches. I bought a Mayan tamale just to try it out. It was also very tasty and not dry. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 start was due to my side of the tamale not having to much chicken or veggies than when I first bit into it. I'll definitely come back again.

Luis B.

Yelp
This place has only been open for a week or so and I've been here a couple times already. The coffee is good and the cakes are awesome! Ordered a cake and took it to work, everyone loved it. I'm sure I'll become a regular picking up coffee on my walks around the hood.

sara s.

Yelp
Krisroffer's has the best Tres Leche cake I have ever eaten! I got the chocolate mint cake with chocolate frosting as a birthday cake and it was so light, moist and delicious; not too sweet but very addictive! The family that runs this place is also very welcome and friendly.

Liz S.

Yelp
First off: this is NOT the bakery in Pilsen. The original owners of Kristoffer's Bakery sold it and have now opened up Kristoffer's Cakes. Two different businesses people. On to the cakes: a $3.50 a slice of heaven, can't be beat. The coffee is Intelligentsia, very reasonably priced and the other goodies, such as Rice Krispie treats, are on point. Please stop by, they recently opened up in McKinley Park and it's not the same spot as their previous location. Once again, different owners and different locations.
