At Least Five Michigan Grocery Store Workers Have Died From COVID-19 | Eater Detroit

"An employee at this Grosse Pointe grocery store died from a novel coronavirus-related illness, contributing to several reported fatalities among grocery workers across the state. The situation emphasizes the risks faced by essential retail staff; many stores have implemented measures such as hazard pay and protective gear, and state orders lay out steps to minimize customer–employee interaction and uphold social distancing." - Brenna Houck

Google
Long time kroger shopper here and this location has to be the worst kroger I've ever been to. The selection of produce is terrible. This location seems to be a smaller store maybe explaining why they don't have much. I won't be returning it was honestly a waste of time going there.

Andrew L.

Google
Never have I experience the worst customer service at a grocery store. You would think they know what is pick on their shelves as sales concerts but they don't. An when you are black they think automatically you are wrong. This is my third time going through prejudice at this store..I highly recommend people stop using this store

Rachaell P.

Google
No only os this place unsafe, you can add expired food to the list . This was nit a day or two expired, December 9th !!! This store should be shut down!!! Short staffed, manger hide in offices, no one answers the phone, one person at service desk… i world hate to run a store and know people shop here out of necessity, no cause they want !!!! Disappointed and disgusted!

Karynthia Y.

Google
I am deeply disappointed and frustrated with the decision to implement paid parking at this location. When did grocery stores start charging customers just to stop and spend money inside? I already spend hundreds of dollars here on food that is often less than fresh—a massive cost for a mediocre experience. To now add a mandatory parking fee on top of already exorbitant grocery bills is simply insulting and shows a disregard for customer convenience. It’s inconvenient, unnecessary, and frankly, feels like a money grab. I will be taking my business to stores that value their customers enough to offer free parking. Money hungry and inconvenient. Avoid if possible.

Crispin D.

Google
This Kroger is absolutely disgusting. Their produce is always in terrible condition, their meat counter stinks… And their employees stand outside at the front of their store and smoke cigarettes all day long… Particularly today the butcher is standing outside, smoking with his Professional chefs coat on which happens to have blood from the meat on it… Just doesn’t seem very sanitary?? Such a disappointment.

Google
Thank you, Ms Simiya for my beautiful arrangement. I love the prearranged flowers. However, there's something about a person's personal touch and creativity that is super special. I gathered, she arranged and represented, and I love............💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Google
I order and shop at this Kroger quite often, usually get good cut watermelon, but today was that bad day for watermelon and I bought the $10.00 tray, but that was the worse watermelon I have ever tasted , $10.00 down the drain couldn’t find a single piece that was worth eating, this rating is just for today cause I was so looking forward to some good watermelon, just so disappointed, had to throw it all Away, I guess you win some and lose some 🥲🥲

Google
Parking and produce make the experience unpleasant. The location is great, it’s to bad the store is not.

Yelp
I'm in the check out line as I write this. Thing is, the check out line kinda collides with the very busy deli line/waiting area. This often gets awkward. Not to mention, defeats the purpose of social/physical distancing measures. I just witnessed a deli worker ask to help a woman who came after another. A lil cat fight ensued on MLK Day no less! All of which could be cured if management trained deli staff to either say, nice n loud, "Can I help who's next?" Or "We'll be with whomever is next shortly." I'm only writing this in hopes someone in management sees it. No ill will at all (hence 4 stars). Anyone who is willing to bravely work in retail, risking exposure to infection gets stars from me. Just want us to all do better.

Katie G.

Yelp
This Kroger smells so bad like rotten fish every single time I go. I have never written a yelp review but I am writing this in hopes they fix the stink.
google avatar

Burt W.

Yelp
The armpit of Grosse Pointe. Bad selection, terrible staff (what few of them there ) sky- high prices and always crowded with EBT holders waddling the aisles at a glacial pace. Mostly self checkout with long lines to even buy your stupid groceries. Complete garbage store.

Jo J.

Yelp
The produce department is poorly managed with empty, uncleaned shelves at mid morning when things should be fully stocked. Be sure to wash every produce item from this store due to the presence of flying insects and lack of sanitation. The bakery and deli are well managed however. The late afternoon customer service manager has a chip on her shoulder and is never pleasant. I have only used the restroom once, and it was disgusting. The steps to the basement are always filthy and the elevator is out of service regularly. Years ago when this store first opened it was well managed in every aspect with a highly visible manager on site. This is no longer the case. Aldi's is nearby with better prices, happy productive employees and a clean bathroom. Thank you.

Grayson A.

Yelp
Better food lunchly is moldy it was bad 0 star if available so bad the toilets were filled with toilet paper

Yelp
This Kroger is amazing! I don't know why these people are writing such bad reviews! I came with my family of 8 and they gave all of us a picture of this dog that was adorable! We came during Christmas so there was a man playing Jingle BElls on sleigh bells and it sounded great! WE tipped him $100 and it was a great decision because he gave us a candy from his pocket and it smelled like plants! Best smell ever!

Kira J.

Yelp
Horrible experience. I was in self check out and the machine froze after accepting my card. I asked the person at the kiosk for help and he said I was next. Then 4 other peoples machines need assistance: and he takes every body before me although I had been waiting for 10 minutes. Weird thing is he tended to all the white people before me. won't be back because of Jeff and the lack of assistance !! 0/10

Yelp
This is the only big box store in the GPP area. It's been here as long as I can remember. We used to come here at least once every two weeks. Now I go with my mom every couple of months since it's further away. It's not as big as their marketplace but it has everything you could need.

Tom C.

Yelp
PARKING THE WORST NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO YOU GET A PARKING TICKET. they will ticket you instantly even if you use the ridiculous system in place 10 zones ion one street , none of them transfer from one block to another WTF

Emily H.

Yelp
With the overabundance of other Krogers in the area, I go out of my way to avoid this one. It's tiny and poorly stocked, the parking situation is wack, and most of all, it's STANKY. I literally have to hold my breath in the back half of the store because it reeks like old rotting fish, especially near the meat and seafood counter. I would absolutely never buy meat or fish here--the smell never gets any better so they must just not be cleaning. Overall it's fine for the most basic of all basic staples, but be warned that you will be grossed out.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
I want to give it zero stars. I agree with the other review that it smells like rotten old fish, SO TERRIBLE! And the bathrooms need a constant janitor on staff for it was just filthy. We claim to care about health and safety yet a place is left like this.....PLEASE FIX!
google avatar

Gregory C.

Yelp
The rear of this store smelled of old bleached fish. The men's bathroom was nasty... as if it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Toilet paper stuck to the ceiling. The elevator. Nasty!

Tom C.

Yelp
After 40 years they finally marked the parking so a normal car can fit in the spaces But they give tickets without warning I will NEVER be back again I'll drive to the free parking no matter how far Yes and the homeless guy giving out the tickets doesn't look like anyone who should be in the neighborhood but he's really waiting there for you to step away so he can write you up before you have a chance to pay

Jonathan Lightning R.

Yelp
I had to clean my self check scanner myself. It was filthy with chicken juice or whatever it was on the glass. I don't think it is out of the personal job description or Union duties of the check out person to not pay attention to shit like this. It's a violation of Union members to allow a customer to be doing their job. See pic.

Yelp
This Kroger has gone seriously downhill over the last 2 years. It is the smallest Kroger in the country (true fact), but when it was first remodeled they did a great job with different selections and keeping the shelves stocked. Now you're lucky if you can find what you're looking for even if it's a basic item. Cereals are frequently out of stock, favorite items are no longer stocked, shelves are wiped out. Items get re-arranged and shuffled constantly - so just when you think you know where something is at - it's not there anymore. Good luck asking someone for help - you can't find anyone. The management needs to be refreshed to get this store back on track. The check out people talk incessantly to one another or are on their phones texting and talking. Baggers pile everything into the bag regardless of size or weight - what happened to bagging 101? I get home and find items missing. I check my receipt and find I've been overcharged. Add in the nightmare parking lot with the too narrow spaces guaranteed to make tempers flare & fights break out- and this place is my last choice to shop at these days. And don't forget to feed the meter because the cops will for sure give you a ticket in no time - what else do they have to do but haunt the Kroger parking lot? Ugh - I miss the old nicer Kroger.

Anthony F.

Yelp
This is not one of Kroger's better stores however it is OK if you only need a few items. The parking situation although not the fault of Kroger is terrible. Grosse Pointe City installed Passport parking in the Kroger parking lot. I was in the store for 10 minutes and paid 50 cents for parking plus a convenience fee of 25 cents. Ok I understand the parking fee but why a convenience fee?
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Slowest. Deli. Counter. Anywhere. Convenient location for a quick stop, but very limited selection room in all departments. Did I mention slow?!?

Rmnh L.

Yelp
I used to love this store for convenience, selection and friendly neighborhood environment. None of these apply anymore. This store has become " terrible". Customer service is awful. the store is always busy due mostly to its location but since COVID it has gotten worse. they nearly always have long lines with only one checkout open except for self checkout - therefore people load up full carts and those with an item or two are forced to wait in long lines behind them. I live down the street and used to go there several times a week. No more. After refusing to go there any more, I have made an exception in an emergency and am reminded why I stopped. Never again!!!
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
If I could give this store zero stars I would. The parking lot pretty much guarantees you'll get dinged, lines are always insanely long and limited choices.
google avatar

Nan S.

Yelp
In the last five years of going to the store not any improvement occasionally you'll have a decent check out more often than not you don't there's no one in the store that seems to care where things are selection is limited No variety no incentive to go there other than it's a grocery store and you don't have much choice Employees gossip they're more concerned about their personal lives and inter-relations then they are checking people out I guess I wonder who's in charge of the management there Location is good they don't really compete with Trader Joe's because they're definitely two different types of store it's clean enough the cheese departments adequate that's about it

Patricia D.

Yelp
Great service and quality products are found, always! I have found that their Representatives are courteous, and professional, always!
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
My biggest complaint about Krogers is the increasing lack of selection. The people working there are nice and helpful. The store is clean and the shelves are neat. The food items lack choice and so many go to Trader Jies or one of several specialty stores in the area. The parking lot is small and the ins and outs of the narrow soaces is scary. Today, I discovered that they only carry the Kroger brand of butter. I have tried it and it is terrible. This is a deal breaker for me. If I can not go to Kroger for quality basics, I might as well go to the mom and pop stores for all my needs

Poppen R.

Yelp
On Xmas Eve around 3PM in 2020 I was waiting in very long line to checkout & everybody was going to grab a last minute item. I went around corner & came back to cart in 40 seconds where 2 ppl cut in line; and proceeded to shake my cart and try to intimidate me. I asked for Store Manager who appeared only to be very rude & not understand I could legally sue the store if I was assaulted by a customer.(Assault & Battery) (Far too often ppl think assault is the violence, thats the battery) You don't ever tell customers their problems with other customers at checkout in a long line, isn't going to be your problem legally later on if a fight breaks out in store. (And they didn't protect the customers, this was my fave store.) So moving forward if I ever go back inside this store,I have to call the police if another incident like this occurs.

Yelp
I love this Kroger in Grosse Pointe because its newly remodeled. It's amazing how much product they can put in a store this size. The deli is fabulous. They have some of the best takeaway available everyday so you don't have to worry about cooking dinner. You can just pick it up and Rush right through the self-checkouts which are in the front of the store close to the service desk. Lots of parking and closed entry make it a great safe space for shopping for single ladies. I just wish they had more of those small single Shopper carts. Kroger you did us right when you remodel this store now bring one downtown for the rest of us so we don't have to come all the way over here to get a good store to shop in. Thanks very much Kroger that's why we stuck it out with you through the remodel
google avatar

Antonio L.

Yelp
I just left the store walking past the garbage on the floor in the entrance after I witnessed the deli employee touch his hair, use his cell phone then he touched the meat!!?? While he made this phone call he proceeded to use the "n" word, It was a good thing no children were around to hear it. Ever since the old manager retired, this store has gone down hill. The store on Mack Avenue is a list cause it is so dirty and poorly run I would hate to see this store suffer the same fate. Having employees standing around talking about how badly they are treated by the company while not saying excuse me when you try to get past is also such great customer service. None of the employees have uniforms on, it just looks terrible. Maybe if we all stop shopping here they will correct the problems.

Derek A.

Yelp
This is the smallest Kroger ever with the poorest selection. The aisles are one cart wide and missing many items that you'd expect to find at any other Kroger. I've also noticed that the prices seem to be slightly higher (or just a lack of sales). I'm sure I've missed it, but I have yet to find parking that isn't metered. I'd just save yourself some time and go a little further for a bigger store.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
This is a nice store, the prices are decent, but the workers here are lazy and, or, incompetent. Of all the local Krogers the workers here are the worst, always listening, and watching stuff on their phones never actually helping customers

Anne M.

Yelp
The biggest disappointment in a local grocery store. Kroger's promised the community that this store would be a "premium" store and would carry items that you couldn't find anywhere else. What a joke! The store isn't clean, the parking lot is in real need of repair and it feels like I am shopping in a third world store. It wouldn't be sad if this store had to close!
google avatar

Lola B.

Yelp
Gary. Store manager at 16919 Kercheval. Grosse Pointe, MI is completely inappropriate. I am unsure why I was harrassed by him and the cashier when I chose to use the self checkout lane with 30 items. The lane does not indicate a item limit. Also, I did as prompted and removed my bags once they were weighed. I don't appreciate feeling racially harrassed as the white gentleman next to me what not instructed to keep his bags on the scale before he was finished. When I asked Gary what his last name was. He refused. When I asked him what the address was to the store he was the manager of...he told me to ask someone else... RIDICULOUS!
google avatar

Hubert S.

Yelp
It is interesting how much of a difference a few blocks can make. This Kroger off Kercheval is dramatically different than the one off Mack. Both are in Grosse Pointe, but only one is nestled safely in The Village. If you want fancier Kroger experience (more variety, slightly cheaper prices), then drive over a couple of blocks and go to this one.
google avatar

Carole H.

Yelp
It looks beautiful. Not only is it situated in the already cute "village" area of Grosse Pointe, but the store is newly updated to look fancy as well. Still, looks are deceiving, and unfortunately I find this Kroger to be pretty bad in terms of prices and selection. This store is on the small side. But not that much smaller that I'd expect them to be lacking so many items on my shopping list! My shopping list doesn't vary much, so I'm buying all the same things regularly at Meijer, or Spartan grocery stores with no problem. But last time I left this Kroger, there were about 4 things they just didn't have at all, and another 3 or so that they had in such small selection/variety that I just passed rather than settle for a product I didn't really want. They do have a nice sushi bar and soup/premade food selection, but I guess that's not as big of a deal to me as I don't buy that stuff as often. The layout is kind of odd, and because the store is smaller the aisles are more narrow and everything is generally just closer together. Not a big deal...but the selection is what bums me out. Prices seem to be a bit better at other Kroger locations as well. Next time I'll only run in here if I need a quick something, I'll save my big grocery shopping for another store.
google avatar

Barbie M.

Yelp
I'm not so sure about you fancy shiny Kroger! I don't like your weird angled cash register line that makes people not know where the line starts or ends. I don't like your lay out so much either it's not really clear to me the logic. I do like your sushi and soup bar though, oh and your 10 u-scan check out that's super nice. I guess I like the mack Kroger or i am just used to it and the slightly lower prices there too. I'll give you another try though new shiny boutique Kroger. I hope we can become friends! PS. Are you really paying people to unload my cart on the conveyor belt at the register? really? wow!
google avatar

D. M.

Yelp
Smaller than the average Kroger, it nonetheless has a good selection of the "stuff" your household needs. People there are quite helpful, and the location cannot be beat if you're there off Kercheval.
google avatar

Nat Z.

Yelp
Well-stocked, clean, and well-organized. Produce is usually pretty good and reasonably priced. Decent selection of fish with country of origin labeling, which is a rarity in non-bougie stores. Impressive olive and cheese selection, because Grosse Pointe. My one complaint is that the wine and beer selection is pretty rough. They have a large amount of wine, but nothing particularly good. Staff are friendly.
google avatar

Kara P.

Yelp
This is a horrible store. It is extremely small, which I could deal with if the employees did not constantly set up in the middle of the aisle and make no effort to allow you to pass them with your cart. They are constantly out of certain products. The cashiers are slow and there are never enough lanes open. Yesterday when I went there was not a single cart or basket to put my items in. I cannot think of a more stressful and annoying shopping situation. Go anywhere else, seriously.
google avatar

VP L.

Yelp
First of all Matt the employee was rude so I'm up here at the Kroger is up here on Kercheval Avenue in Grosse Pointe Michigan and I decide to get me and my wife a pound of shrimp I always shop here to get a pound of shrimp with my vegetables on the side sometimes I get the other big bag and other times I cook it clean it myself so I'm up here currently at 10:54 and speaking with a Mannager about this particular employee in the seafood isle
google avatar

Chuck K.

Yelp
A great brand and company for sure. If you shop there you'll understand what I'm talking about next .... shoppers are totally uptight here. I think the parking lot and condensed footprint stresses people out. Never see anyone, except for the staff, smiling. Holiday time it goes to defcon 4 and you better have your wits about you and you chin strap snapped and snugged up. I like the size it feels local and not so chain like. Come on shoppers lighten up and mind you Ps & Qs! Be nice!!

Howard B.

Yelp
Easily the worst grocery experience. Consistently bad. Terrible parking, like everyone is in the lines and you still can't open your door. Store is small and cramped, very very unpleasant to get around in there. Items always mismarked/ring up wrong. Every visit. God help you to get customer service in there. Desk is right at the door in everyone's way, and the people who work there always demonstrate equal parts rudeness and incompetence. After 12 years in Grosse Pointe, I am finally done forever with this store. Nearby Aldi and Trader Joe's are much more pleasant, but don't have everything. Kroger up in Saint Claire Shores or maybe Meijer--never again for Kroger in the Village.

Nicole M.

Yelp
I live a half mile away from this Kroger and the only time I go there is if I've already started cooking and realize I'm missing something. Seriously, this location is a nightmare. The parking lot is always a disaster to navigate. The aisles are cramped. The store is always packed. It's impossible to find what you need. It seems like their goal in demolishing and rebuilding the store was to make the least pleasant shopping experience possible.

Jane H.

Yelp
i dont like this store at all. its too small and with corona --people can hardly go down the aisle without bumping someone. the selection is minimal compared to other krogers. i go to the one on mack--its bigger and better.
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
Not an enormous selection, but close, quick, and convenient. Also, the bottle return is based on the honor system--you just handing the bags to an employee and telling them how many you have. I'm just saying. BONUS: a Starbucks. Caribou, and GAP are in walking distance. Again--I'm just saying.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
The customer service here is TERRIBLE. I asked three different people for a small simple item and they kept pointing to different parts of the store without taking the initiative of walking me over and helping me. No wonder the employment rate is so high. These apathetic employees deserve to be fired and maybe then they will appreciate their jobs. Not coming back again. Trader Joes across the street is much better.
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
Great location in the Village of Grosse Pointe. Plenty of parking around. The people who work here are very friendly. Very good produce and also selection of meats and fish. They also cook a good variety of salads and chicken every day.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
I do the bulk of my general grocery shopping here. It's a small Krogers so if I need something very specialized they usually won't have it. I will have to travel down Mack or Jefferson to the bigger stores. The best thing about this place is the friendly efficient staff. They are helpful and get you out of the line quickly. They are friendly and fun to talk to. I appreciate how quickly the staff clears the carts so that it doesn't pile up in parking spaces. The super small parking lot can be a challenge. Especially if someone chooses not to park correctly.
google avatar

Nancy O.

Yelp
I love the new Kroger! It is leaps and bounds better than the old one. The have a little bit of everything. I love the sushi bar and the bakery department is fantastic. I do wish the aisles were wider though.

Andrea S.

Yelp
This is an expensive and claustrophobic grocery store conveniently located in my neighborhood. Slightly higher prices, very little selection and constantly low on restocking product. Still, I'd happily come here if it wasn't for the parking tickets. Stay two minutes too late and you'll get a ticket. Is recommended checking line times or feeding the meter as much change as you can. Don't count on a nickel in the meter to get a jug of milk, even if you don't see any meter readers. They are very fast and sneaky here.

Samantha A.

Yelp
Worst Kroger I have ever been to. Staff is less thank helpful and I have bought several items only to come home and realize they are expired . I I've since gone back and found more expired items on their shelves ( yogurt , milk and eggs) and have brought this to the attention of their staff who didn't seem interested. There is a much better Kroger on Mack . They should be shut down and space made for something better.

Dee D.

Yelp
Hands down the worst Kroger I've been to. I live about a mile or so from this Kroger and intentionally drive to Kroger on 9 mile just so I do not have to come here. The staff is extremely rude, as well as lazy with the exception of a few. Their are never any hand carts available but always a pile sitting by self scan machines. Not to mention parking is an absolute nightmare.

Yp L.

Yelp
It is a nice Kroger. Wish parking was better, but it is in a prime area. The staff is nice, but the store could have done more with the space. If you are going for a few things, it is optimal store.
