Don’t Settle for Single Plates - Thai Family-Style Eating Ordering

"This two-decade-old, family-run shophouse has won favour with just about everyone who has eaten chef Chanchawee's cooking, including the Thai royal family. The raison d'être for making the pilgrimage here is the decadent stir-fried crab with yellow chilli and the famous fluffy crab omelette. Start there, and if hunger persists, order the renowned green curry with fish balls. Remember that crab is king, and the uber-popular dish can sell out before closing time." - Angie Thien

When Bangkok empties out during the Songkran holiday, it’s a good time to visit famous eateries that are usually packed with locals and tourists. We took advantage of a much quieter Bangkok to visit Krua Apsorn last Thursday and what a good decision that was. Of the dishes we ordered - the seafood yum won seen (vermicelli salad), chicken fried rice, stir fried telosma cordata flowers, squid salad, stinky bean salad, fishball curry stood out. They were sensational. The dishes stood out for their freshness, clean flavors, balance, and cooking perfection. They let the ingredients speak for themselves - a nice change from some eateries that often overdo the seasoning or cooking or spice. Not all Thai cuisine is hot and spicy. Next level home cooking is a good way to describe Krua Apsorn’s menu and finished product. Prices are also okay for this quality of food, and the restaurant’s global reputation (great reviews from The NY Times & Guardian & more). Often hyped eateries don’t live up to the reputation but this isn’t the case for Krua Apsorn and we’re already looking forward to our next visit to try their signature crab curry and crab omelette dishes.

Good for Thai dishes. Need to wait for queues a while as it was quite busy especially at lunch time. The service is ok for local restaurant, inside the restaurant looked ok clean, got AC, but noisy. Lot of staffs but they all seemed busy. The food served pretty fast. You can also order take away one ( but rather eat at the restaurant to avoid some get spoiled as some ingredients were mixed with coconut milk) Highly recommended « Pu Lonn » the crab dipping sauce served with fresh vegetables. And “Mieng Kamm” The food was tasty. The price s a little bit pricy for local restaurant but worth to try as they used the quality product. No baby seating provided Car park by the restaurant ( 2 mins walk)

Great place for dinner, it feels very authentic with little to no tourists. The prices are great for the amazing quality. The food was really good with nice flavours and everything came very fast. The staff was friendly although we got rushed since we arrived 15 minutes before closing (we didn't check the business hours). But still a very good experience that i can definitely recommend.

This local Thai spot is a hit for the most part! Their green curry soup is absolutely delicious, packed with flavor and just the right amount of spice. The fish cakes are crispy and super tasty, perfect for snacking. Only downside? The sour pork tasted a bit off, not quite hitting the mark. Still, the cozy vibe and friendly staff make it a great place for a casual meal.

A local Thai restaurant nearby Democracy monument and BMA. Foods were authentic Thai. Using fresh ingredients. Good taste. The restaurant could be packed and you may have to wait in queue. Reasonable price. This is one of our favorite Thai restaurants.

Pretty good local food, we ordered - Pad Thai which was tasty - Chinese kale leaves in Savoure wrap which was exotic and good for photos - Thai papaya salad which was sweet and sour and yummy - Melinjo leaves with eggs which were so-so - rice The staff is polite, but not very attentive. They could gather and talk while we waved to get the bill. Luckily the cashier saw us. We came on a Saturday noon, no wait. The total bill was around 700 baht with no drinks.

Don't get fooled by its looks. The food looked very nice but I don't understand why it felt too bland. Crab omelette was alright. Chicken Fried Rice was very lacklustre, almost felt like eating unseasoned food even though it didn't look like it. The Thai Iced tea was slightly redeeming but overall, I was very disappointed even though this was recommended in the Bib Gourmand guide.

This is really good local Thai food. Plan to have cash and not a credit card. The crab omelet is their signature dish and is very good. It retains heat almost too well. The lotus root prawn curry is delicious but very spicy if you don't handle spice well. There are tons of vegetarian options and an entire menu section dedicated to them.
