I stayed at the Krungsri River Hotel and overall had a very pleasant stay. The setting by the river gives it a calm, open feel, and it’s only a short walk from Ayutthaya Railway Station which makes arrival and departure straightforward.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with good views across the water. Everything was clean and well kept, and the bed was particularly comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with a wide choice, easily enough to set you up for a full day exploring the temples.
There’s also a nice shady pool, which is very welcome after a hot afternoon out. In terms of facilities, it represents very good value for money. It isn’t right inside the historic park, but transport is easy and the quieter riverside location is actually rather nice after a day out in the heat. A solid, comfortable choice in Ayutthaya with generous rooms, a good breakfast and a relaxed atmosphere.
However, the service let it down. The staff throughout the hotel, from reception to the breakfast team, were uniformly miserable. We stayed two days and did not see a single smile. It is not welcoming when guests are met with blank faces and minimal engagement. A smile costs nothing and makes a considerable difference.
The riverside restaurant was also disappointing. We ordered a Chang beer, French fries and fried cashew nuts. The fries were fine but not piping hot. The cashew nuts had clearly just been warmed straight from a packet, yet the waiter insisted they had been fried. That sort of argument does not sit well. I had considered the steak, but at £30 decided we were better eating elsewhere. I am not paying UK prices for food that is not properly prepared.
