Phenomenal Thai Take Out in the Twin Cities

"It’s unfortunate that the beautiful sit-down space is currently inaccessible at the moment, but the vast menu makes Krungthep a worthwhile stop regardless. Grab any of the curries to go, and save the whole fish dishes and comforting hot pots for when the dining room opens again." - Alex Lodner

This was our first visit to the restaurant, and we were very happy with our lunch selections. The portion sizes were large and the prices were modest. We had the Pineapple Curry ($10.95) and Cashew Nut with Chicken ($13.95). We were given a very large bowl of rice along with our entrees. Overall, a great selection if you are in the mood for Thai food.

The food was very good and the prices were reasonable, the issue with this restaurant is the very poor service. We ordered appetizers that came out with our meal. Then no one ever checked on us again. No refill of drinks, no one checking on how was the food. We wanted ice coffee and had to go to the counter to order it. Then we needed boxes for our leftovers, again we had to go to the counter to ask for it. I would order takeout from here but I will not be back for a sit down meal.

My friend Gia and I had lunch here on a Wednesday at 12:30, very quiet. We were seated right away. They took our order and the food came out fairly quick. Gia recommended the Beef Boat Noodles so I ordered it and was not disappointed at all. 10/10- flavorful, didn't need to add anything but the chilli powder and some pickled jalapeños. The stuffed chicken wings were just okay. The stuffing was a little bland in my opinion, and the outside was coated with panko or something so it was a little crispy but the skin was kind of soggy. 5/10. They do have a pretty big menu so i would go back to try other dishes. Gave a 4 star only because they didn't come back to check on us, had to wave someone down to get water after about 45 min.

The food are delicious and the prices are ok, my family went there couple times and some time I take friend for meeting there as well, but the issue is customer service is very bad, we order 1 fish dish and they brought us 2 order, we said we only order one, but they didn't want to take it back, acused us that we did place an order of 2, so we just looking at each and end up pay for 2 with a surprise prices, we know we did not order 2, no refill on water, never check on us, always mixed up with our bill. I don't know if I want to go back to this place even the food are good.

Dishes are well presented and served, very flavorful, and service is MUCH BETTER compared to their other restaurant (Bangkok) on University Avenue. It is a nicer environment with beautiful Thai decor. This location offers a Fusion menu which is nice to see. This location: Fancier environment, consistent great flavor, 4 star service Other location: Non fancy environment, non consistent but good flavor, 2 star service (unless you go at a perfect non busy like the early mornings) Nonetheless, both locations are preferred restaurants because of their selections, flavors compared to other restaurants. But I like this location better.

One of the best authentic Thai restaurants. Service was pretty good. The restaurant is decent size and great for larger groups. Plenty of tables and booths. The menu has quite the selection with pictures for almost every menu item and the food is delicious. The khao soi was almost as good as the one I had in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Loved the food here.

1st time here! Great selection of foods. Service is pretty fast considering we had 6 people. Our drunken noodle dish & pad Thai dish looks the same but favor was still good. The Thai basil w/frog leg was not good to eat because the legs were all chopped up. Careful of bones if you order. Deep fried pork strips was ok. Will need to revisit & try other dishes to have better evaluation. Their mild is hot so be careful.

The food is on point. And I love Thai food. I'd say the pad thai can use a little bit more meat. The menu is very extensive, I had a hard time picking what to eat. I like how it had pictures though.

Yelp
I ordered takeout here for lunch. Ordering was quick and easy, the food was ready promptly. I thought it was good, but I'll be honest not that different from the options that are closer to me on University. I think it's a good place for a Thai meal if you're in the area.

Yelp
Great spot to get your thai fixing in! Love how big the plates are and flavored each dish is. Service is a tad slow, but it doesn't beat how good i'm grubbing on that pad see ew

Yelp
I highly recommend this Thai restaurant. When you first walk in, you instantly notice that this is a restaurant the owners take pride in. It is simply and beautifully decorated with lots of natural light and plentiful seating. The back of the restaurant has a few parking spaces (like 10) and can get pretty busy so come early. We opted for street parking since there was no parking when we got there. We ordered nava, spring rolls, and egg rolls to start. The nava is more jelly based than tapioca based. However they add in additional flavoring (probably palm sugar instead of cane sugar?) that gives it a more exotic flavor. There are also chia seeds. I thought it was very good. The spring rolls were my favorite appetizer there. Perfect proportions of meat, noodle, and veggies/herbs. The dipping sauce was a wonderful blend of sweet and savory. My husband ordered the drunken noodles with medium spice l. It was very spicy (it was Asian spicy, not Minnesota spicy). He was mostly disappointed that it used regular pho noodles instead of the flat noodles. I thought the pork was a bit over cooked, but the flavors were nice in this noodle dish. I couldn't handle much of the spice though. I ordered the stuffed chicken wing paeneng curry and it was the best thing I've eaten in a while. Wonderfully fatty with a delicious blend of sweet, savory and spicy. The coconut milk with the curry flavors were out of this world. The stuffed chicken wing itself had noodles, ground meat, and cabbage stuffing. I thought the stuffing was delicious. The chicken skin gave this dish a variety of texture. I would come back here just for this dish. Everything else is a bonus lol The service and time to get your food was pretty good here too. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Wow, delicious, flavorful Thai food with a very extensive menu. We were on the search for a new Thai restaurant and were so glad to have discovered this gem. They have been open for 4+ years...I'm thinking why did we wait so long? The shrimp pad Thai was excellent...succulent, flavorful and not dry at all. The creamy Tom kha was my husband's favorite dish. Don't let the word creamy scare you. It has, just a tad, of milk to give it the right consistency...and so flavorful! The red curry with chicken was fantastic. The only dish I'm neutral about is the eggplant. There is something a bit salty in the preparation. Overall, GO!!!! Don't wait several years like we did...won't get that time back for yummy thai food.

Yelp
There's this other Thai place we love but they're relocating and aren't open yet. This place has been here for a long time but we never saw it simply due to not driving through this area often. Recommended by my SIL and we're glad we finally stopped by. Everything we've had is so good. Just haven't had the pho but if I wanted pho, a Thai restaurant probably isn't the place to visit. So far, been here four times. Not once disappointed.

Yelp
I actually love this place! I believe it is still under the same ownership as Bangkok thai on University. A beautiful ambience as they also do a lot of events at this location! Beautiful chandeliers, and feels very fancy for being in the middle of Rice street. The food is great and the prices are even better exclamation. Also appreciate the hours of operation they seem to be open when no one else is.!

Yelp
Can never go wrong with Krungthep Thai. They have a great selection to choose from, the menu is huge! The food is flavorful. Their spice level is pretty spicy so I would recommend getting no spice or low for those who do not like their food spicy. They do have a party room downstair but I'm uncertain if it's open at this time. For the most part, the restaurant is clean. Parking is limited but can also park on the street.

Yelp
Been here a few times with my family. We tried a variety of dishes. They make great Thai staples such as papaya salad, larb, and curry dishes. The pho was not good, a little more than flavored water. Service is ok. Be prepared for a wait if you come during peak meal times. Restaurant is clean and welcoming. Stick to the Thai classics, but don't get the Pho here.

Yelp
Great experience overall. The service team is a bunch of young high schooler seems like it. Been here a few times and have not been disappointed by the food and service. It's a nice family friendly restaurant and the vibes is really causal. Dishes that I got during this visit are pictured below.

Yelp
We always do takeout. Love the curries and the spaghetti Panaeng!!! Appetizers are also great.

Yelp
Lots of food choices!! Place is clean, waitress kind of lazy, only fill our water one (or probably did not, couldn't recall). Have to get waitress for service (smh). Food was good, many varieties of dishes. Pho broth needs more flavor and it's clear (needs improvement). The laab was sweet which it's now how it should taste. Pad seer en (drunken noodles) was good. Stuffed wings was awesome. Not every dishes is a must, but definitely going back to eat some of the dishes.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly staff. Best mango sticky rice and I keep coming back for the atmosphere. I love the artwork and general vibe so dine in if you can

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and every time the food has been consistently good! My go to dish is usually the the pork rind stir fry. Had the pho it was ok. The menu is pretty extensive and would definitely like to try more items. I recommend this place for thai food; the flavors are on point, the staff are friendly, the inside is up to date. Come check them out.

Hnub Y.

Yelp
We ordered several dishes including pad thai, pad see ew, roasted honey duck, clams, crab fried rice, lobster / w house sauce, seafood hot pot. The only dish I would order again is the lobster w/ house sauce. Everything else was mediocre. The service was good and the food came out pretty fast.

John T.

Yelp
The people are friendly. Quick service. Great food. Good atmosphere. And it seems that the people around me were very satisfied.

Yelp
I think this is my new favorite Thai owned place for Thai food in the Twin Cities. The menu is big and it's the same owners (and menu) as Bangkok Thai Deli on University Ave also in St. Paul but a bit better because 1. Service is friendly here 2. The food is still delicious here everytime 3. It's a bigger/cleaner space on the inside (although parking is better for Bangkok Thai Deli). Because the menu is so big, I think there is definitely something on here for anyone! I really enjoyed the Laos style papaya (although it is pricey compared to other places & smaller portions) and the eggplant stir fry with ground pork and shrimp! The curry here and the boat noodle soup/pho is also super flavorful here! Like many other Yelpers have mention, the parking lot is a bit small, so expect to look for street parking during lunch and dinner hours, especially on the weekends. Usually if you come in parties of 4 or more gratitude/tip is already added to the bill!

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of very spicy foods, and I've had my eye on Krungthep Thai in the North End for a while. I live pretty close, but hadn't made it there until today. They have a typical 5-level spice index, from no spice to very spicy. Reading Yelp reviews, I was a little nervous - because some folks were reporting that Medium would burn your face off. Since I rarely trust Minnesotans' views on heat levels, I decided to go for #4, Spicy. =) I got the Panang curry with stuffed chicken wings. It's a red curry sauce with coconut milk, ginger, basil, and other typical Thai spices. Got it to go. It smelled awesome when I unpacked it. Took my first few bites. Now THIS is going in the right direction. It was not much of a mouth/throat heat, though there was that, but my body reacted with typical fight or flight. Couple beads of sweat, face was flushed. Went down warm and heated me from the inside. Very tasty. Now, it could be that this preparation didn't lend itself to heating up as much as others with say, a lot of Thai peppers, but I feel pretty confident that getting my next dish "Very Spicy" will be an awesome, face-melting experience!

Tee M.

Yelp
I love this place, the food is so good, the service is amazing, I really love the hospitality here. The menu is big, but everything I've tried has been amazing, I always ask for a recommendation around what I'm in the mood for, and they never disappoint. Easily on of my favorites, and will be back here many more times to come.

Mark D.

Yelp
Krungthep Thai is a nice alternative to Bangkok Thai Deli (BTD). Food comes on a similarly spicy side of the spectrum as the old BTD, so that's why I make that comparison. Also, one or more of the BTD chefs or someone associated with them came over to Krungthep supposedly or something. Anyway, the food is decent. Their curries are their strong suit, but I'm also a sucker for curry, so take that claim with a grain of pepper. We've been here three times since they opened. On our last visit, we had the green curry with mock duck and drunken noodles with that same mocking duck. (We love to be insulted by our wheat gluten.) The noodles were both sweet and mildly spicy. The curry was a bit disappointing: it was spicy and flavorful, but also very oily and much more on the brothy side than the curry gravy side. Maybe that's how it should be though (thin). Service was polite but barely around on our last visit, though it hasn't been strong or engaging on any of our times there. They are understaffed and had a help wanted sign on their door, but we didn't even see the server anywhere in the dining room most of the time that she wasn't at our table. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars: food 4-4.5 stars in general (though 3.5-4 on our last visit). I'll round this review up to 4 stars, because I'm all round like that and Yelp allows whole stars only. Give it a try.

Lucy M.

Yelp
Fantastic Thai food. Curry was amazing. Nice clean building. Huge menu. I'll be coming back

Yelp
We've been on a quest trying different Thai places lately.. we really liked this one. The service was excellent. I probably had three different people from the restaurant stop by our table and ask how things were.... Presentation was great and prices are reasonable. It's worth the drive.

Yelp
I first came here right after it opened, and have started returning more regularly for takeout. They have a lot of options and everything I've tried has been very good. In particular, the portions are really large; I'm not a light eater, and yet when I order one of their entrees from here it's good for two dinners. I haven't yet figured out the ideal spice level. For me, "mild" is not quite spicy enough but every other level I request is too spicy. What you should take away from this is that they don't skimp on the spicy, which a lot of people will like! As I type this (November 2020) it's still pretty abnormal to go eating in restaurants, but their dining room is open, normal hours and everything, and it's nicely decorated and always very clean. I live only a few blocks from here, so as a local resident I can confidently say that this is BY FAR the nicest restaurant in the neighborhood. I really like that I can get such good pad thai so close to home. If you're looking for a nice place to eat around here you won't be disappointed; if you're looking for a takeout option, they're consistently high quality in that area as well.

Thomas M.

Yelp
The Pad Thai is great and can get really spicy. I am mostly good about handling spice so the first time I ordered it I got the second most spicy option (which is what I usually go for at Thai restaurants). It was incredibly spicy. I was sweating and I couldn't eat it all at once, so I can't imagine how spicy the spiciest option would be. I went back a couple weeks later and got the same thing but one spice level down and it was perfect.
google avatar

Zaria W.

Yelp
This place is a north end miracle. The prices run fair. The interior decor looks amazing. The tastes are bold and food comes out fast. It's also right on the bus line! However, you WILL NEVER RECEIVE A REFILL here even though they're offer fountain beverages. The waiters himhaw on that part. That's the only aspect you won't get bang for your buck.

Gage C.

Yelp
When I lived here I would come here every two week you are and will be missing out if you do not come here!! Ps love ya Ben!
google avatar

Mee Mee P.

Yelp
I just love them. I usually would get this whenever I'm craving for noodle. You get the perfect amount of everything and good amount of chicken. Very good for the price too.

Yelp
I keep coming back here wondering why my gf likes this place. This is actually the 4th times I've been here and I've come down to a conclusion that this'll be my last time here. The staff are very friendly, but if you fine in, they're not the best at giving service, and the food, I'm just not very into. It. One of my best friend is Thai, so i eat a lot of thai food, therefore i am very picky when it comes to thai dishes. I went in today and got a paneng, lime chili fish, thai style papaya salad, and a yum thalay. Let's start off with the Paneng, it's more or a red curry to me. Paneng is suppose to be a thick broth, but it was very liquidy, cannot taste the coconut or the aroma of a paneng dish. The lime chili fish was not bad.. It's supposed to be a very refreshing soup and they did just that. I did enjoy this dish. Before i ordered this fish dish, I originally wanted to order a Prik Nam Pla (Chili Sauce Fish), but he suggested they didn't have something like that because it wasn't an authentic dish. I did forgot the name but describe what it was. Thai papaya salad is suppose to be a refreshing sweet and sour dish but there were no flavors, all i could taste was the sweetness. I felt like they just shredded the papaya, put everything in there and then add sugar. I can't even taste the fish sauce or saltiness to the papaya salad. I think the most disappointing dish for me was the yum thalay. Its also a sweet and sour dish, but it was just salty. I had to remake the sauce at home and adjust the dish myself because it taste nothing like a yum thalay. But do give the business a try, might be for you. My friend does go here all the times.
google avatar

Emily Z.

Yelp
Okay, why have I only been here once? It. Is. Great. Menu is huge and had more than the typical Thai place in the Twin Cities (from my experience). I loved the tofu panang curry. It was a more oily and thinner sauce than the liquid coconut type, but I was not mad. Ordered it HOT and they delivered. I suggest medium if you can't handle your heat. My friend got the khao soi and I tried some noodles and soup and it was delicious. I will definitely order that next time. It was a cross between curry and ramen aka best of both worlds. I will 100% be back.
google avatar

Budo V.

Yelp
The food was good and also their portions were decent. They have thai boat noodles (pork or beef)z

Yelp
Looks like Rice Street is quickly becoming ground zero for great Thai restaurants - here is a brand new one that just opened a few months ago. I was told it's owned by the same folks that own Bangkok Thai on University Avenue. I got something to go, but was very impressed by this brand new space. The building went up over the past year and it even smells new. It has a big space downstairs for banquets and a huge dining room. There is a parking lot at the rear of the building. Another thing that is huge is their menu - it took me awhile to decide what I wanted to get! I decided on shrimp paenang curry, and brought some chicken satay and pad thai home for my son. We both agreed it is some of the best Thai food we've had, and we are Thai food freaks. Son got his pad thai medium spice and said it wasn't really spicy enough for him, but he's a spice freak so will order it hot next time. I intended to take a picture of my food but I was too hungry so I forgot, but I did manage to get a snap of the dining area. Please stop by and give this new place some lovin'.
google avatar

Joy R.

Yelp
Best place for authentic Thai dishes. I keep going back for the shrimp patties and the fried pork with dipping sauce (one of the BEST I've ever had) I always ask for an extra one lol you won't be disappointed :)
google avatar

Yelp
medium is definitely 4 on a scale of 0-5 . the khao man gai is pretty good. sticky rice definitely makes the laab tastes better .
google avatar

Ko V.

Yelp
My wife and I visited this place for her birthday dinner. I'm glad we did. Greeted right away with a smile. This building is brand spanking new. Everything was clean. Gotta be same owners as Bangkok Thai Deli, same menu We started with the fried pork with dipping sauce. It was tender/crispy and very tasty. She got the Namtok beef, it too was good. Many spices and herbs, it comes with cucs/lettuce/cabbage and a thai chili. I got the stuffed wing panang curry. It was good. Now I can visit this thai place without going to Uni. I must say what the terminator say, "I'll be back!"
google avatar

Craig L.

Yelp
Very clean , service is prompt and food is delicious They have nice appetizers also Curry ,Boat noodle soup And so much more. Once a week eat here and never get tired .
google avatar

Soapy N.

Yelp
I'm giving it a 4 because the food took a bit long but once it was out it was delicious. They served the Laos version of papaya salad which for some it is necessary to taste some crab paste with your spicy salad. The flat stir fry noodle had a lot of chicken meat and was full of flavor. The chicken satay came with 2 sauces and was also delicious. The pho broth was okay. They also serve mock duck and tofu for vegetarians.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped here a while ago, since we were in the area, looking for a good place to eat. I liked how you either enter either through the front or back door. I just have to say that looking for the menu I never saw so many good choices on so many different pages. So I decided to just stick to one page or I would never be able to order. Finally I decided on the mock duck with stir fry veggies. There was just so much to my food that it was wise to have half for dinner and the rest either later at home or even the next day. Of course as we were heading out what struck me was not only how busy the place was, but how friendly everybody was. I liked how they really did have a lot of seating for big groups of people. I plan on going back soon, to try a different menu item, maybe on a different page.
google avatar

Manu P.

Yelp
When you ask for spicy, they definitely deliver. When I go with my family, where everyone has a high spice tolerance, we leave sweating. Pad thai is saucy with the right amount of egg. It's tangy and once you have it, no other pad thai can really live up. The crab fried rice is excellent, I'm not sure what kind of rice they use, but there's a great bite to it. They don't skimp on the crab either, it's shredded and plentiful in each bite. The Panaeng is full of peppers and flavor, a little with rice goes a long way it's so flavorful! I really don't think there's better Thai food.

Karen S.

Yelp
Delicious! Had Pad-Phed Duck and a pork pad Thai. Both very delicious. Ordered both medium, duck was spicy and pad Thai more mild, but balanced each other well! Had egg rolls and cream cheese wontons for appetizer....both really good! Easy parking, airy and sunny for lunch! We'll be back!
google avatar

April H.

Yelp
The special pho broth was a bit on the bland side. Very plain. But the portion size is good and good amount of meat. The eggplant dish is delicious. Great flavors. The steamed mussels are literally steamed mussels. Nothing much to it.
google avatar

Yeeleng V.

Yelp
The restaurant itself had excellent décor and was extremely neat and clean. It's a very well decorated Thai restaurant with your traditional gold embossed pots, statues, and paintings and a very nice stone flooring. The service was also decently good.! The menu was expansive (maybe too many items actually)... so great variety! I came here with a friend to catch up and just hang out.. I ordered the Seafood Hot Plate which was like a collection of oven baked then pan grilled calamari, snow crab legs (shell on), mussels, and shrimp on top of napa cabbage and glass noodles.. All mixed and cooked with a a red sauce that tasted a lot like kimchi. It was interesting.. I'm not a kimchi fan, but it wasn't bad.. Served on a fajita-like cast iron plate. My buddy ordered their Nam Tok?; it's like a Thai fried rice with ginger.. it wasn't bad, but wasn't very good. It was a bit chunky and I totally did not taste the love. No lime flavor, not much nam flavor, a bare taste of ginger... We also ordered another dish that was like stir fried chicken in a tomato/red/chili sauce... light sauce a but liquidy, but not really stand-out good either... A friend though (the one who recommended Krungthep) did recommend their currys as "Go-to". A nice hang-out spot with good food variety, but I'd be hesitant to go back.. :/

Yelp
The best Thai restaurant in Saint Paul. It rivals that of Ruam Mit Thai. Their Pad See Ew is perfectly made everytime. I also like to get the Walleye in basically any sauce. With a menu like this it's hard to go wrong. Each dish is great in it's own way.

Yelp
Food was 5 stars, service was easily a 1, so I guess that evens out to a 3. We came on a rainy Sunday afternoon for soup. Our usual Thai places were closed and we were excited about Krungthep's good reviews. We were seated and greeted right away and ordered hot tea, cream cheese wontons and Thai beef jerky. Appetizers didn't come out until after the main course, tea took 10 minutes to bring to the table and hadn't even been steeped. When we asked where our apps were, the waitress responded, "you didn't say that", and we had to gently remind her another waitress took our app/tea order and she took our main course. It's on them to figure it out if we're going to have two waitresses. No apology, no comp'd app. So that was annoying. The food is amazing. It's fresh, hot, flavorful and spicy. I will definitely come back, but hoping they burton up their customer service.
google avatar

Khat P.

Yelp
This place is the sister of bangkok thai deli that's on university. The only thing different about this place is that the inside looks more like a restaurant and actually looks nice inside. Bangkok thai deli still resembles the burger king that used to be there. Food wise and all and menu is still the same as bangkok deli. So if you like bangkok deli then I suggest to go here and give it a try. Oh by the way, this place is less busy than bangkok deli so go before people start finding out lol

Yelp
My family and I came here for dinner on a week night, and it was great! We arrived around 6/7pm and we it was a quiet night for dinner for us, which my mom really enjoyed. Compared to their other restaurant, this place is spacious and a little better with appearance. We were greeted and seated right away by the friendly staff. We recieved our water and food in a timely manner. There was no wait at all for our dining, which is great. We ordered their Lao style papaya salad, raw and cooked laab, sticky rice, fried pork belly with chinese broccoli, pineapple fried rice and curry; it was enough food for the 5 of us to eat and bring home with left overs. My parents, who are picky eaters, really enjoyed the food here so that's a major plus! I would definitely reccomend this place for people to try if they want some thai food in St. Paul! Will definitely come back here again for some food

Yelp
They had really good food. I had no idea it was there until I started googling Thai restaurants. Definitely go back.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem for sure! The food is ridiculously good and although the options may seem overwhelming you can't go wrong. I highly recommend the pad Thai spiced up and the red curry! Food comes out pretty fast as well

Love the seasoned pork leg! If you are not a big fan of spicy food like me, you might want to hold the Thai chili because they can really burn your throat! Other than that, everything is good!

Yelp
Been here once and ordered from here a few times. Their curry is amazing, I loved the pad see ew I had and they have the best pad thai I've tasted in the entire metro. My favorite thai restaurant.

Yelp
It's not the traditional thai restaurant I'm use to. Their beef pho is meatballs only not beef. The pho itself lacked common ingredients. The chicken fried rice was ok. Maybe I set my expectations too high, then again, maybe Eastside Thai has the best Thai food in St Paul. Nevertheless, I spent $41 and it wasn't worth it. I won't be returning. When you know better you do better. However, the atmosphere was pleasant.
