Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) is a masterclass in blending historic preservation with modern cultural life.
We approached from the People's Park (人民公园) direction (via Changshunshang Street 長顺上街), our journey begins in Jing Alley (井巷子 / Well Alley), which immediately sets a strong, evocative tone. First was the poignant 'Former Residence Resound' (旧居回响) and the powerful, vivid "Biaoqi Sizheng"(骤骑思征) horse sculpture—a poetic tribute to the Manchu cavalry's warrior spirit.
The atmosphere shifts slightly in Zhai Alley (窄巷子 / Narrow Alley), which is packed with photogenic attractions. The famous Starbucks that seamlessly marrying traditional Chinese heritage with modern café culture. Don't miss the historical "Shuan Ma Shi" (拴马石) horse hitching stone artifact, the charming European-style landmark Xiaoyang Lou (小洋楼), and the nostalgic silver currency exhibit at Shao Cheng Ji Yi (少城記憶).
Finally, Kuan Alley (宽巷子 / Wide Alley) presents the grandest face. While buildings like Diaoyutai Chengdu 成都釣魚臺 and the resident-mansion-turned-opera-theater retain the original traditional architecture, the standout is the way modern retail pays tribute to the site’s heritage. The Honor Flagship Store (荣耀手机店) is a brilliant example, alongside the famous Panda Mural Wall and Pop Mart.
Kuanzhai Alley is a super popular tourist attraction, crowded, demonstrating how history charges forward into the modern day.
