Kubo Review - Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Kubo is a cozy, dimly lit Filipino spot in Lakeview that has the atmosphere of a neighborhood dive bar, but serves delicious food. The bar is an important part of this place, and where you'll find locals relaxing after work, or groups of friends catching up over some drinks on the weekend. But before embarking on a tour of their 20 different martinis, you should definitely eat something first. A good place to start is with crispy chicken lumpia, followed by larger dishes like pancit canton or savory adobo short ribs. They also have comforting kansi, full of vegetables, bone marrow, and tender beef shank. And the tart and salty tamarind-based soup is the perfect excuse to visit Kubo two days in a row when you’re hungover from spending too much time at the bar the day before. When it’s busy, the whole restaurant feels like a rambunctious party with packed tables and classic rock music blasting. But on a slower night, it's a great spot for a lowkey date or group dinner." - John Ringor

Google
Such a pillar of the community. This shop is women and POC owned! I stopped by here to hear a few talks from authors in the community and I found that their selection ranges from books, to clothing , to knick knacks and local crafts! Great place to stop on a relaxing sunday afternoon.

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of Long Beach, Kubo-LB is a haven for bookworms, plant enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a unique and vibrant escape. Owned by a BIPOC entrepreneur, this place celebrates diverse voices and fosters a sense of community, making it a place I always look forward to visiting. Upon entering, you're greeted by a lush profusion of plants, creating a calming and visually stunning atmosphere. Whether you're a seasoned plant collector or simply appreciate greenery, Kubo-LB offers a feast for the eyes. Bookshelves line the walls, showcasing a curated selection of books by BIPOC authors, alongside classics and hidden gems. It's a haven for bibliophiles, offering a chance to explore new reads or revisit old favorites in a cozy and inviting space. Kubo-LB regularly hosts events like book readings, author talks, and open mic nights, fostering a sense of community and supporting local creatives. And that's what exactly led me here when I attended the Merkado which is held every third Saturday of each month. Y'all need to check it out!

Yelp
Newest location of Bel Canto books (belcantobooks.net/) in Bixby Knolls, specializing in BIPOC authors and BIPOC advocates. Kubo (kubolb.com) is used as a community space, with a small bookstore at the front, and small businesses selling plants. It is also offered as a co-working space when the retail store is open. We came on a Sunday afternoon for a community screening of a new short documentary film titled 'Reach Out', starring members of the LBC group "Bootleg Orchestra". It was both an educational and social event, and we were glad that we were able to attend and appreciate the space and show.

Yelp
Kubo LB is for the community! This Filipino owned space is a one stop shop for snacks, plants, jewelry, home decor, books, art, and more! Wifey and I stopped by to check out the Saturday Morning Silog art pop up that they were displaying in their space. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. We appreciate Kubo's mission to uplift and spotlight the Filipino community and the many local Filipino businesses that deserve their flowers. Come by to support and you won't leave empty handed!

Yelp
I wandered into KUBO LB during a Bixby Knolls event and was immediately charmed by the huge wall of books. Bel Canto is a great bookstore, with thoughtfully curated titles. Lots of great choices for both adults and kids which you wouldn't see highlighted at a big box store. KUBO is home to a number of small Filipinx owned businesses, providing a variety of products and services. The day I visited they were gearing up for a sound bath event that evening. A sign in the back promoted an upcoming microMuseum on the Filipinx diaspora. I am looking forward to going back to see that. They also offer co-working spaces on daily or longer term basis. The work spaces looked really nice. It's a nice large, bright space, which can be rented for private events. Because all of their furniture is on wheels, it can be moved around to clear and arrange the space however you need it! KUBO seems like a great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is a GEM of a bookstore! They elevate the voices of diverse authors and showcase a rich collection of multicultural books. Absolutely love the beautiful artwork and interior design. We had the honor of attending the book signing for Dr. Alice Lee, author of A Family Like Ours. It was an unforgettable experience to hear the author's story. Highly recommend both the book and this adorable bookstore! Please support your local bookstore!

Yelp
Many of our favorite vendors told us they were hosting an event. We heard about this spot and their soft opening so we decided to check it out. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking and limited plaza parking Feels: Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach is pretty, nice and orderly. The spot itself is close to a neighborly area and not too far away from Downtown Bixby Knolls. The space itself was formerly run by a church. You have your small passage rooms, a nice venue for larger groups and a big backyard for plants or performances. The vendors made the place come alive and felt pretty comforting. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Meeting some of the vendors was great! Romeo's Chocolate, Flipp Family, Kubo CA, and Pamana Kali were passionate and kind. TL; DR OVERALL: 5 Stars! Love, love, love! All your Filipino interests and more all in one spot. Food, plants, recreation for young kids, small home/plant decor, space for movement, and more! This place has a lot of potential. Wishing the owners and vendors the best as they represent their goods to Long Beach. Till next time! #BayanhihanSpirit TIPS: * Check out their social media handles for updates on their events! * When punching the address, make sure the city is Long Beach and not Carson.

Yelp
This bookstore is really cute! They have a little of everything, and I couldn't help myself. We came here for a book launch and signing of a really nice children's book. It's such a great space, well thought of, and really inviting. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
I should've taken pictures but I was too thrilled by the fact that I am in a Filipino owned space! Kubo LB is not only a shop with so many unique & awesome items from various small businesses but also a bookstore (Bel Canto)! Not only that, I saw from their social media they also intend to use their space for the community for events and even as a co-working space. I left my first visit with a gift for a friend and of course, a little gift for myself. I can't wait to join in on future events and what my next shopping trip will look like (uh-oh! lol!) Highly recommend you check this spot out and follow their social media!

Yelp
Vibrant, bright community space with a great selection of locally curated goodies and gifts! I was there for first Friday and picked up some yummy sweets, a gorgeous cebu blue pothos, and a delightful fiction book to read while I lounge under its luscious foliage! Also found the perfect card for my bestie. What more could I ask for? Throughout the night, the owner was mingling with folks, and her love for the space and the people in it was obvious. And they clearly adore her, too!

Yelp
I discovered Kubo and Flipp Family while they were vendors at LBX kids club- their stuff caught my eye and I wanted more. There's a huge Filipino population in SoCal but very few spaces cater to today's young families. Imagine a kid-friendly bookstore+gift shop filled with Filipino and POC writers and artisans. Kubo is all that and more. "Tita Jen" led story time with a Tagalog song and AAPI books. My bookish heart was full knowing a space like this exists for our community. They even had tiny ternos

Yelp
I came here to attend an after-hour book signing event. The interior has a cozy, welcoming vibe. Soon I realized that it's more than just a progressive bookstore with a wide variety of titles. The space is shared by multiple small business vendors. In one corner is a small boutique, in another corner an offer of plant swap. There's even co-working space rental. Wall painting (salamat), display (microMuseum Filipinx Diaspora), and the name KUBO (native hut) all beckon a strong familiar cultural heritage. For Filipino Americans, visiting this little gem feels like a warm homecoming.
