Heartland Cafe’s Demolition Marks the End of an Era in Rogers Park | Eater Chicago

"Now under new ownership, Kurah Mediterranean—long a South Loop neighborhood favorite—changed hands after more than five years; former managing partner Christopher Kimpel said they wanted to focus on other interests, the new owner's name hasn't been revealed, and the restaurant will continue to serve the same food and drink." - Daniel Gerzina

Food was good and tasty definitely recommend trying this place out. It's kinda like homemade European food. Only problem I had was they microwave the food in front of you that's not made fresh and for 20+$ I would rather have it made fresh to order. Kinda pricy but overall still good and filling food.

Google
Great lunch or dinner pickup spot. Highly recommend! Helpful and friendly staff as well.

Google
I try to eat here whenever I'm visiting town - grew up in the area and this has been a staple for us my whole life, and sets my standard for schnitzel everywhere I go!

Pamela H.

Google
Everybody here is so accommodating I come here after work sometimes at the very last minute they drop in my chicken schnitzel where else can you get extremely good homemade food in a few minutes they are so wonderful here I love the food and I love the people here!

Yelp
Excellent eurostyle cuisine! Fresh homemade soups and meals made the traditional way...from scratch! Service was pleasant and quick! Clean and no nonsense decor,. Could use some AC though, to hot in the service area!

Yelp
I used to love it but every thing has changed! The quality and service is nothing like it used to be I handled lunch for KIA of mentor about 10 years ago and they were the best around

Yelp
Whether you are looking for a wonderful meal of European comfort food or a year round lent worthy Friday fish fry. This is the place. Always fresh cooked to order right behind the counter. Order ahead for the best service. This is a kitchen with a counter in front, bare bones, with great value to go. Take the meal home summer or winter put it on a plate and eat at your comfy spot.

Yelp
Several times I've ordered takeout for my mom , they are always so friendly and helpful. One time I got stuck in traffic and they stayed open a bit longer so I could get there. More businesses could follow their lead.

Yelp
Pure comfort food, fresh and fast. Very clean establishment, everything is out in the open nothing behind closed door. Staff is helpful and very pleasant. I can't wait for their relaunch of the potato pancake, new recipe??? We will be back once we walk off the last meal. Keep it fresh and simple.

Yelp
All of the food is incredible. Large portions of lean prime meats. Wide selection of Eastern European and American entrees. Daily specials and smaller, less expensive lunch portions are available.

Yelp
The menu has a nice variety of choices and several specials are available as well. However, the quality of the food has noticeably declined. My husband had the roast beef dinner and the portion is much smaller than it used to be. I ordered the spaghetti with canned green beans and it was average. My wait time was 20 minutes and my cost for the 2 meals was $23. Nothing spectacular and frankly disappointing as we have had much better meals in the past.

Yelp
Great food, great staff, big portions and wonderful experience all around. You want fresh, authentic European food? Look no further than Kuhar's, people!

Yelp
German chocolate cake is a must get whenever we pick up a dinner from here!! My grandpa and I will grab food from here every once in a while when we don't want to cook and because he lives a street away. Cabbage rolls, snitzel, everything is good and you get a hefty portion. It's definitely comfort food at its finest!

Yelp
Excellent homemade traditional European dishes with friendly service and reasonable wait time. You can't go wrong with anything off their menu and the prices are very fair with the portions of food you get. I drive 25 minutes to get food here and it's totally worth it.

Yelp
Place is amazing. Excellent home cooked meal. Ended up getting the Hungarian Goulash, was sooo good. So many choices, can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Yay! Just like I remember when my visiting my grandparents who always would order Kuhar's in Euclid. 15+ years later, menu and quality has stayed the same. Food is very consistent and caters to my Eastern/Southern European roots. My favorites: - Potato Pancakes - Swiss Steak - Wiener Schnitzel - St. Moritz Schnitzel (with ham and emmental cheese tucked inside - delicious). Definitely recommend for a truly home cooked meal.

Yelp
Average used to be amazing maybe Covid took over? Expensive tasteless food what happened?

Yelp
On my very first visit, I was very impressed with the friendly service at Kuhar's!!! It felt like I walked into a down to earth, family owned restaurant--which appreciated my business. They offer Daily Specials, such as fried chicken, Swiss Steak, Chicken Paprikash, spaghetti and meatballs, fish, roast pork, Hungarian Goulash, stuffed cabbage, Wiener Schnitzel, breaded pork, Pierogis, sausage and sauerkraut, chops, roast beef, and Salisbury Steak. Kuhar's markets their business as serving "Exclusive European Cuisine" and "Olde World Entrees." However, I'm a fan of their turkey club sandwiches, chef salads, and homemade soups!!! Also, I'm a big fan of their fresh, homemade bread--which is prepared on site--everyday! All of their sandwiches includes your choice of: fries, potato salad, mashed potatoes, or home fries. And for those watching their waistlines, they offer a "Weight-Watchers" Sandwich--that includes lean ground sirloin, cottage cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a pickle. For those who love desserts, Kuhar's serves a variety of delicious custard squares, strudels, and cakes!!!..My favorites are their Cheese Cake and their German Chocolate cake.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from Kuhar's. In the past the food has been excellent. Not the case tonight. It being Wednesday we ordered the Weiner schnitzel. Apparently something had been burned in the fryer or the oil was old. Horrible taste on the schnitzel and the same for the potato pancakes I ordered. When the Bride stopped to pick up the order the whole restaurant was filled with fry smoke and I could smell it on her clothing when she got home. In the past this was one of my favorites for middle European food. Used to order from them all the time in Euclid. I think we are now done. Something changed and the quality and taste is not there.

Yelp
Yet another good example of a locally owned place that might be easily overlooked given its location and proximity to fast food chains. Tried them for lunch recently and wasn't disappointed in the German fare they offer. The Hungarian style sausage included in the house platter was tasty, though I would have preferred a good knockwurst with my wienerschnitzel. Slightly disappointed they didn't have kartoffelpfannkuchen at the time of my order, but the cheese sticks were very good, if not quite authentic. Friendly, prompt service. Skip Chipotle and that shit sushi-bullcrap place across the street and give this place a go. It's also only carry out, so cross the street to the Save on Tobacco and buy a few good German beers to wash your meal down with.

Yelp
Pricey but hearty clean meals. Sanitary. Food is a bit bland. Portions are kinda small. BEST FRIED FISH 2 pieces for $8.00. But they skimp on tartar sauce.

Yelp
Food is still very good. Wish they would update the side salad to something other than lettuce and a piece of cucumber. Maybe a menu revision would be good as well. Has the food gotten better/worse? Nope, still reliably the same. Lost point? Inattention to details. No cutlery provided for take away orders. Reduced portion sizes. Still great food, but time for some changes...

Yelp
I love this place! I've been going here since I was a kid and they were in Euclid. It's still clean super friendly and always love the music when I come in. Super fresh delicious bread that comes with you're meal and simple salad. Great mashed potatoes and gravy definitely not instant. I always order the wiener schnitzel it's always amazing! They also have tasty deserts!

Yelp
Working on my car tonight, and stopped at Kuhar's along the way. Hadn't been since they were in Euclid, and I'm glad I did. Spaghetti and meatballs, salad and bread for 8.95. Clean, nice people. You need to go!!

Scott G.

Yelp
Always good food a Kuhar's. Daily specials keep the menu fresh and different, while regular dinners are always there "just in case" you don't wanna try the stuffed cabbage (but you should!). Just had the St. Moritz Schnitzel yesterday. Awesome dish... and it's HUGE (well worth the cost).

Christine J.

Yelp
Great food. Love the weiner schnitzel and the bread is to die for. Staff is always friendly. Great food for the price. The potato pancakes are delicious too.

Kelley W.

Yelp
Love it. Good good. And love the nightly specials. You get a lot of food. Some meals might seem pricey, but once you see just how much you get, its a good bargin. Staff is always friendly and they are always busy. I usually get the schnitzle. My father is a German chef and this place has the only other schnitzle I will eat besides my father's. Carry out only...if you are looking to dine out, not for you. Something on the go...its great.

Yelp
This is a home cooked meal without the dishes! The límited menú and daily specials is great I never have that overwhelmed feeling when I'm there they have a great staff and a clean kitchen that's visible so you know You're not going to end up with someone's ball sweat on you Wiener schnitzel. The food is tasty and well priced.

Lenore C.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place, especially on Wednesdays (specials are weiner schnitzel and chicken paprikash) and Mondays (special is goulash). Their number is on speed-dial on my cell so I can call them when I finish grocery shopping and pick up my order on my way home.

David S.

Yelp
I eat there frequently, and think the food is great. While I would not call the food cheap, it is certainly worth it, and favorably priced compared to the same food one would get in a sit down restaurant. It is very hearty food. The staff is very friendly, and everything looks clean.

Monika L.

Yelp
Very good food, the staff is very friendly. Portion sizes are great. Everyday there are different specials which is very unique. You never leave hungry.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed in Kuhar's when I was hoping to use them to cater my bridal shower. We always went to the one in Richmond Heights as it is closer to where we live and we absolutely loved the food there and the portions were pretty big for the price. Because of how pleased we always were with the food and service, I was really wanting to use them to cater for my bridal shower. The catering is done at the Mentor location so 3 months prior to my shower, we called them to figure out how far in advance we would need to call in our order, where we would pick up the food, and also discuss the food choices we had. When we called the Mentor location initially, they said all they need is a week's notice for the catering and we were also told that they would be able to bring all the food to the Richmond Heights location so that we wouldn't have to drive all the way out to Mentor to pick up the food. We also asked if we would be able to try the Parmesan Chicken on their catering menu to see whether or not we liked it and wanted to order it as part of our menu. We were told to call the Mentor restaurant in a few weeks and see if they had any other catering orders for the Parmesan Chicken and then they would be able to put a few pieces aside for us to try. Fast forward to May, and we call to place our catering order 8 days before the shower. First, we were told that a week SHOULD be enough time for them to get our order together and that luckily, since we didn't have 100 people, they thought they should be able to do it for us. This was despite the fact that they told us originally that we only needed to give a week's notice. Second, we were told that in order to do the Parmesan Chicken, we needed a minimum order of 40 pieces (and there was not going to be 40 people at the bridal shower). No one ever told us that, not the first time that we called the Mentor location to inquire about catering, or the time that I went to the Kuhar's at Richmond and inquired about the chicken again and being able to try it before we order it for the shower. Even though we weren't going to have 40 people at the shower, we really wanted to have the Parmesan Chicken so we were just going to order the 40 pieces anyways so that we would be able to get it. For some odd reason, even though ordering 40 pieces would be putting more money in their pockets, the person could not understand why we would order 40 pieces when there wasn't going to be that many people at the shower. It's not like we wanted to pay more than we needed to, but if that's the only way we were going to be able to get the chicken, then we were going to do it. Third, this time, we were told there would be no possible way for them to bring the food to the Richmond location, that we would have to come all the way to Mentor to get it. The person had no idea why we were initially told they could bring the food to Richmond. All they would tell us is that they would not bring it to Richmond and we would have to come to Mentor if we wanted the food. Lastly, it appeared to be a major issue that we wanted two kinds of dry meats and not one dry meat and one meat with gravy. It really shouldn't matter to them what kind of food we want to order if it is giving them the business and putting money into their pockets. Such a shame and an absolutely terrible experience. Needless to say, we did not end up having Kuhar's cater the bridal shower. Even though we loved the Kuhar's in Richmond Heights, unfortunately, we will never be going back to that location either.
