"After mysteriously closing its doors back in March, Washington Avenue sushi restaurant Kukuri is plotting a comeback. The restaurant announced its return in a post to its Facebook page, saying that Kukuri will open again “in a week or two.” Still, details are scarce on why exactly Kukuri closed its doors. When it shuttered, a notice posted to the restaurant’s door indicated that the locks had been changed, and it was paired with a “for lease” sign positioned in the window, which seemed to cement the idea that Kukuri was long gone. In its short six month tenure, Kukuri saw its fair share of ups and downs. When the restaurant opened, it was helmed by Shimao Ishikawa, a sushi chef that had spent time in Michelin-starred kitchens. Ishikawa reportedly left the restaurant at some point in its tenure, and some diners say that Kukuri’s quality declined after his departure. Perhaps they’ve all worked it out, because when Kukuri was at its best, the restaurant earned raves from Houston diners. Eater has reached out to Kukuri’s management for more details on when the restaurant will return and why it closed in the first place." - Amy McCarthy

Absolutely the best sushi experience in Houston. Everything was on point even on opening weekend. Great attention was placed on providing excellent service to complement the meal. Sitting at the bar for Omakase will be something you remember for the rest of your life.

When we first arrived, we were a bit intimidated by the menu. It seemed hard to navigate, however, we inquired about the Omakase and that changed everything! It's recommended that you reserve ahead, but being that it was a Wednesday night, they were able to accommodate us. The entire Omakase experience was by far one of the best I've had in the city. Will definitely be back!

Exceptional traditional sushi and great service. Top notch sake and beer list too. Small high quality servings as per Japanese cuisine not Texas size 😉

We got the sashimi sampler, red grouper and black seabass sashimi. We also got the assorted tempura and the black cod. The sashimi was fantastic and so was rhe blacl cod. It is a little pricey but the food is well worth it.

The freshest fish here in Houston. Chef Ishikawa is a genius and a very dedicated chef. He is a great addition to this city. Kukuri serves a lot of different sushi and sashimi that you will not find in any other Japanese restaurants in Houston. This is definitely a must try for sushi lovers.

Considering the 30 minute wait between orders, lack of selection, running out of sake.... still great food. Prepared to still be hungry when you leave. Trendy cool spot similar to a San Fran spot. Room for improvements but potential... Just come ready to spend. $170 omakase the most in Houston to date.

The service was excellent and the quality of sushi was good. However, for the portion size it is extremely overpriced. You leave hungry and with a big bill. The interior is very basic and gets loud as tables close so doesn't feel like a high end restaurant except when you get the check.

The old chef is gone and you can tell the drop in quality of both food and service. Nigiri is good but the non-nigiri plates remind me of mall Chinese food doused in hoisin sauce.. very disappointing for the $$$ spent. The manager or owner was also very rude regarding our egg allergy concern. He was unaccomodating and appallingly ill tempered about our concerns. Definitely sticking to MF sushi for our omakase cravings!
