The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu | Eater

"At this Japanese dessert shop, you’ll find the best strawberry roll in town — a sponge cake rolled around a whipped-cream cloud and fresh strawberries. It’s so light that one slice is barely enough — best to just get the whole roll. While La Palme D’Or may be superior for some classic sweets, Kulu Kulu offers more novel desserts. The playful “loco moco,” for example, looks just like a mini version of the iconic Hawai‘i dish, with a cream puff as the hamburger patty, caramel sauce for the gravy, and mango jelly and whipped cream shaped into a sunny-side-up egg." - Martha Cheng

I order dessert from this place faithfully! 🥰 They never disappoint. They stay consistent, the dessert stays delicious and fresh! Coming from Germany, I thought I’d never find chocolate similar to them but this place has them and they taste so identical!!!! It’s called the kulu kulu chocolate! It’s a must try! I’ve also been on the hunt for Japanese soufflé pancakes & they have a dessert that incorporates it called Tokyo cake! OMG! If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend this spot! Everything on their menu is hands down delightful!

Stopped by here to pick up some desert after having lunch at Waikiki. We come here very often. They provide a good selection of great tasting cakes. We will go back again and again.

Today was my daughter Phoebe’s birthday, and we made a last-minute stop at Kulu Kulu to get a cake. We picked up a beautiful and delicious chocolate cake, and it was absolutely perfect! A woman, who seemed to be the owner, was incredibly helpful. When she found out we were visiting from California, she was extra welcoming and kind. The store itself was clean, charming, and beautifully set up, making the shopping experience even better. Thanks to the wonderful service and amazing cake, we left feeling happy and satisfied. I highly recommend Kulu Kulu to anyone looking for a great bakery in Honolulu!

Google
I bought a 7” Xmas cake and taste was so so. I’m not sure but I smelled artificial cream on top surface of the cake that was the same smell I ate reasonable cakes in Japan long time ago. Inside of cake tastes good though. I expected all fresh cream cake. I’ll try other cakes.

Google
Diverse flavors and plenty of options. The staff was friendly and sweet. The desserts were delicious and soft and did not taste old or refrigerated. Although it's a bit of a walk from the tourist area, this plaza is worth a stop.

Google
It took a little bit of back and forth to confirm the cake and my husband loves the design! The cake tastes fine but there are better ones in town tho.

Google
I was not at all interested in American sweets, but my family found a shop just for Japanese. It was quite satisfying. We bought a cake for our birthday member.

Google
Yummy strawberry shortcake! I had a slice and it was light and fluffy! Jj bakery closed recently, so this was a nice find! It’s def a bit more pricey than Jj bakery. I really wanted a strawberry roll but couldn’t justify buying one… lol!

Yelp
I ordered these desserts on UberEats. But I am a long time customer of Kulukulu and thought it deserved a review on my recent dessert experience. Tokyo Cake: Fluffy cake. Soft whipped cream. Wished there was more whip cream. And a strawberry coated in sugar it seems. Baked Cheese Bar: Hands down, could eat 5 of these one after the other. It's not too sweet and evenly seasoned with salt is how I can describe. Inside is soft. Almost a cake but moist enough to know it's not. So good. Strawberry Tiramisu: Love how this rendition of tiramisu. It tastes like strawberry dessert is all I cake say lol. I enjoyed the little chocolate flower. Don't chomp down too hard on the tiny pearl sugar candy. I recommend this place if you need to satisfy a sweet tooth. Over the years I've tried many of their desserts. Never disappoints. I believe these were seasonal but that just means I need to come every season to not miss out. I love reminiscing about these desserts! Lastly I'd advise to pick up the desserts in person as it's more affordable without the fees from UberEats. This time I just couldn't get myself up to drive lol.

Yelp
I should have realized that visiting a bakery inside a food court would be a mediocre experience. It looks nice - there are plenty of colorful items in the case. I got the rainbow cake. It was not that sweet and soft on soft. For some reason, it came imprisoned in a sheet of plastic. Why did i? There are so many excellent bakeries in Honolulu.

Yelp
Cakes are always super good. Staff are always nice and accommodating. Store is always neat and well maintained. Though it's in waikiki so parking can be hard. but plenty of metered ones on the street. This is my go to bakeshop! Always get cakes here for birthdays. They can customize cake if you give them a call.

Yelp
About a 1-1.5: kulu kulu is a small Japanese dessert shop that is located in Eaton Square; they also have a location as part of the Royal Hawaiian's food court. I picked up a couple of their seasonal items, as they looked super cute: +the Jack o' Lantern - a pumpkin cream puff +a Franken Stein - a matcha raspberry oreo Unfortunately, these were just not good. The puff itself was soggy, and there wasn't any pumpkin flavor in the cream; the consistency of the cream was also off, and not as fluffy and light as it was expected. The Franken Stein had a weird, goopy exterior, and there was hardly any raspberry filling; the matcha didn't taste good, almost bitter-like. They were both tossed. Service is friendly, and this place is more of a takeout type of a place. +off-tasting bakery items +friendly service

Yelp
Ever had a cake from Kulu Kulu? If not, you are missing out on one of the most delectable treats out there! Take a few steps down below sidewalk level on Hobron (near Food Pantry), and you're met with a sandwich board sign extolling feature treats inside! As charming as the drawings are, be prepared to be blown away when you see the actual product in the case! You can't help be mesmerized while making your selection. It's almost too pretty to eat. The bakery is small, uber clean, and staff very friendly. The single selections are special, but the cakes are wonderful - light as air with just the right sweetness. Take heed of the fine print on the box - keep refrigerated and eat within 24 hours. You'll definitely want to optimize your experience through this advice!

Yelp
Looking for boys or girls day cakes, this is your place. I've been purchasing their cakes for years and it's always the same. Price has gone up in recent years but it's worth it. The cakes are imported from Japan and is so good, it's always strawberry shortcake. The special sugar decorations make the cake so "kawaii"! They are so accommodating, I went one day early to pick up my order and they were so nice about it and gave me my order. I needed one more regular cake and luckily they had chocolate cake they could sell me. The chocolate cake was so so good. We love Japanese cakes not sweet and always light and fluff
google avatar

Yelp
Everything that I've had from Kulu Kulu has been delicious. This chocolate Christmas cake was amazing! So creamy and delicious. Service is always fast and friendly. No line when I went. I always try to come to this older location because it's not as busy as the Royal Hawaiian Center location Thankfully, I have as much self control as I do or the cake would be gone. Delicious!

Yelp
They validate your parking (Eaton square parking) for 30min if you buy minimum $10. Love this place because their cakes are so good!

Yelp
Nice bakery not too far from Hilton village area. Their tiramisu is really good! Service is fast and friendly.

Yelp
Iced "Coffee" (Cafe mocha on the menu) was served to me with no ice. It was honestly just milk and chocolate sauce. I guess for $3 you get what you pay for, but if you personally wouldn't drink something then why even offer it to your customers? I can make chocolate milk at home The cakes we got were tasty but the coffee honestly ruined my perception of kulu kulu.

Yelp
Got my birthday cake from here and am so happy I did. I ordered their 6" soufflé cheesecake with a design. Of course I chose my favorite character which is gudetama. At first I had problems with my order which I came to pick up the cake and there was no image on it. But they got that fixed and add the image no problem. The manager was very nice and helped fixed the gudetama picture so it looked cleaner before I brought the cake home. Overall great bakery with the best cream puffs.

Yelp
Gotta coffee and a lil cake for breakfast. Coffee sucks (was mostly milk?) and god forbid don't park in the loading zone up front or they will call HPD thirty times, didn't tow me just nicely asked me to move. I guess only they get to use the loading zone, all other businesses working nearby loading/unloading 300 pound valves aren't as important as them loading up mediocre cakes.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little bakery at Eaton square just a short walk from Hilton. This used to be a popular bakery in shirokiya. They're known for their cream puff particularly the diamond head puffs that are made with a chocolate pastry. Got the one with cream filling (they also have choco filling too).
google avatar

Tomomi S.

Yelp
I really like their cakes and sweets. Not too sweet but delicate and tasty. Situated in the Royal Hawaiian Center food court area, so plenty of seats and tables to enjoy your desserts. I really enjoy just looking at the showcase and decide what I'm going or have today, tomorrow and the day after.... Mmmmm....

Yelp
Japanese pasties are the best. Light and not too sweet. It's perfect after a nice bowl of ramen. Verbally located and easy to walk to.

Yelp
We ordered a rainbow cake for my cousin's birthday. It was beautiful. I prepaid for the cake and when I went to go pick it up I was a little disappointed in the size. It was pretty small for the price, but it was delicious.

Steph B.

Yelp
The best--delicious Japanese style cakes are not to be missed! Most recently I had the soufflé cake and it was a-maz-ing. So yummy. The staff are kind and will help you make an informed choice if you are like me and need that extra decision support :-)
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Came for coffee and treats. Coffee was atrocious, straight to the trash. Got double cream puff which was about a 3, the chocolate cream puffs also about a 3, the black cat looked great tasted funky, the chocolate mousse was HORRIBLE, it tasted really old and stale. Anyhow not a great experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked away in Eaton square on street level. Location is not as nice as other location. A bit dingy and very warm inside. The 4 stars are for the delectable desserts. This visit I had the Japanese cheesecake soufflé, Strawberry shortcake, and a cream puff. Japanese desserts are less sweet but do not lack flavor or beauty. So fluffy, soft, moist and sooooo delicious! Strawberry shortcake was also moist, cream was light and fluffy. The fresh Strawberries nestled between those layers yummy! The puff was filled with this cream that was light, creamy and tasty. The outside crisp and was very delicious. Desserts tasty location not do much .

Yelp
Best bakery in honolulu/ Waikiki! They are so articulate and delicious. They are so creative and all so beautiful. My husband absolutely loves them . We have guest they love all the desserts from the croissants, rainbow cake to the mango slices of mouse cake. It's all divine. My favorite is the coconut cream cake slices. Try them you won't be disappointed. They are located on Hobron near Eaton Square Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian shopping center. If you want to impress with a different dessert or quality this is your place.
google avatar

Candi K.

Yelp
Happy Girls Day (in Japanese it's called Hinamatsuri ( 雛祭り), every March 3rd)! If there was any reason to treat myself to cake and cream puffs it would be today! If you love the prettiest Japanese pastry - light sponge cake, freshest whipped cream and matcha and sakura flavors, Kulu Kulu is heaven sent! Prices are fair, about $10.70 total before tip for a Sakura Matcha Roll and a Cream Puff. No seating available inside but if you stroll into the Villa in Eaton Square Business Plaza courtyard, there's tables and chairs near the koi fish pond and water foundation.
google avatar

Bethanie C.

Yelp
Kulu kulu is so cute, I always love getting their cream puffs. I tried something new, the kiwi pineapple cake, and it was not my favorite. The cashier was super nice and it was great to see they have different items specifically for certain locations- makes it fun to check out their different locations
google avatar

Yelp
Kulu Kulu is a small Japanese bakery that specializes in delicious desserts. Looking for light and fluffy? Not too sweet? This place is for you! We've tried a few slices of cakes from here and they were all pretty good. I remember liking the Kona Coffee one the most. They are decorated nicely and would make a great treat or gift for someone. Located within Eaton Square next to the Food Pantry. Street parking available. Service was fast and friendly.

Maya B.

Yelp
I don't know how many times we ordered cake from here. But the cake so good and my favorite would be the ube and the tiramisu cake.
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
I had a few delicious cakes from this place, it's def a must stop if you have a sweet tooth. I tried to soufflé cheesecake and the mango mouse cake. Both were soft and creamy and sweet but not overly sweet. My friend had the strawberry shortcake which he sucked down hella fast so I assume he liked it lol.
google avatar

Yelp
I feel like we are so lucky to live here where we can experience true Japanese pastries and cake just like in Japan! There's a lot of places in Hawaii that try but Kulu Kulu is the best thus far! Their hello kitty cake and waffles are so adorable and I miss seeing them at shirokiya! I was happy to see this bakery after my tsa precheck appt office which is in the same area. Hello kitty cake was light and airy with such delicate whip cream! I ordered hubby the chocolate cream puff and he devoured it. Next time, I would like to order my birthday cake from here!
google avatar

Jasmine J.

Yelp
I am devastated they no longer have the Hello Kitty waffles with dipping creams. Apparently they stopped selling this signature item back in April 2021. I knew I should have gone sooner but ever since their Shirokiya location closed at Ala Moana during the pandemic, I never wanted to brave the parking and traffic situation in Waikiki. Sidebar: I don't care for the Hello Kitty aspect (although a cute added touch) but the fact that I really enjoyed these waffle bites with the dips!!!! They also had a mochi waffle version and some of the waffles were also filled with cream cheese or strawberry jam etc. Let's petition to bring these back! *crying Anyway, I was having a horrible day yesterday and decided I deserved a sweet treat! Found myself at the Hobron Lane location easily with free metered parking (after 5:30pm). They had run out of a lot of items - downside to going so late..ordered a souffle cheesecake an chocolate cream puff. I was contemplating the strawberry shortcake square slice but the slices have gotten smaller and cost 5.99! Not best bang for your buck but I do like their version a bit better than la palme d'or. Both are pretty stellar anyway. Chocolate cream puff was waaay better than the last time I've had it! Better crust that isn't too soft or stale. Shu cream filling that is slightly thick but not quite pudding-like. I'm not a fan of souffle cheesecake (I like NY Junior's version or good old Cheesecake Factory Godiva Chocolate - mmmmm) so this one was for someone else. However when I did try it, I was pleasantly surprised! It was pretty much the best souffle cheesecake I've had. Having never tried Uncle Tetsu's (secretly, I might have but didn't really remember it?). I really like the plaza here (Eaton Square) and will probably come back again for the cakes and cream puffs (wish they had more diverse variety of flavors because they're definitely making these right!), the nearby Food Pantry for reasonably priced hot lunches and baked goods, and Komedokoro for small bites! Forgot to add, Sakura season is here. Check out the photos I posted for their seasonal cakes!

Yelp
*Updated: store connected regarding the oversight. Addressed current food safety measures in place and apologized for the situation. Overall a very pleasant & reassurimg exchange to give there location another chance. The variety here is great and we will be sure to stop in again to give another taste. Original post: It's been a while since we stopped in. Picked up a chocolate Mille Crepe and chocolate puff. Went home to enjoy.... Unfortunately, ended up pulling a hair out of my mouth from the chocolate puff first bite. Will not return unless some throughful response comes of this.

Yelp
The strawberry shortcake at kulu kulu is and always will be my favorite cake on the island. Thank me later.
google avatar

Violet B.

Yelp
2/2/22 I came to Kulu Kulu specially for their Ehoumaki which is only available 2/1- 2/3. It's for the Setsubun festival and they have this special rolled cake which looks like the good fortune roll. Since February is their Chocolate month I also picked up some chocolate cakes. They were wiped out immediately and we all enjoyed our cakes. Will return soon for more!

Yelp
Stumbled on this Japanese bakery after a trip to TSA pre check at Eaton plaza. Just the sight of the festive colors brought me in but once I got to looking at everything I quickly filled a box with various pastries to take home and share. Must admit, some of the textures and flavors were a bit unexpected but all were delicious. The chocolate custard was a major hit along with several of the other items. I wish I could be more precise in what we had but we were so eager we are everything before really taking in the names and what we were consuming. Suffice it say, there wasn't an item we didn't enjoy beyond belief. I highly encourage you to get by and get some of these heavenly pastries for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Warrene C.

Yelp
Just happen to be in the area when I came across this place. Such a cute display of sweets. I had the hardest time deciding what I wanted. I ended up buying the Kona coffee roll, matcha roll, chocolate puff, custard puff, and their August special the ube cheesecake. Also ordered a hot cafe mocha which was perfect. The person helping me was very helpful and friendly. I ate the cheesecake which was very light and good. The rest I'll share with my friends. Will definitely come back again.
google avatar

Wakaba S.

Yelp
My favorite is fresh chocolates! They just melt in your mouth and so yummy. Other items are pretty good too.
google avatar

Angel H.

Yelp
I've been to all three of their locations with Ala Moana being my favorite. The one at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center comes in second, with this location being last. This locations just feels small and cramped with nowhere to sit. Fortunately, the cakes tastes the same at all the locations. My two favorites are the chestnut cake and strawberry shortcake. Their cakes aren't overly sweet, because it's made with fresh cream instead of buttercream. I have noticed that their cakes have shrunk in size somewhat. I took three bites and the piece of cake was gone. The Royal Hawaiian and Eaton Square locations are currently open. The one at Shirokiya Ala Moana is closed until further notice.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
This is the very best dessert spot. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and find myself here all the time! I love the monthly themes and the fruit treats are so great!
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
I usually shop at the Ala Moana location, but that being closed I decided to try Eaton Square. They don't have as much pastries on display like Shirokiya, but they had a huge kitchen in the back and it looks like their main bakery. I specifically came for the father day cake and they had plenty in stock. I ordered this last year and it was so good! It's light and fluffy, and the flavor is not too sweet or overpowering. I love getting their specialty cakes for the holidays, especially Christmas. The worker in the front was super nice and seemed happy to be there. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. It wasn't at all like the other reviews I've read about this location. Street parking was very easy and the store is easy to find. Although I probably wouldn't come to this location regularly I have no choice until the Shirokiya location opens back up!
google avatar

Nat W.

Yelp
It is nice to see this Kulu Kulu location is still open everyday from 9am-6pm. The selection is not full but still good variety. As I mentioned, my absolute favorites are strawberry shortcake and souffle cheesecake. I also really liked their double cream puff! Mont blanc and Sakura Matcha tart were okay. The customer service was nice and he gave me Kulu Kulu stamp card. Never received one at any other locations. Very solid Japanese cake shop on this island :)

Jack P.

Yelp
One of the best bakeries I've ever been to. Everything is extremely well made, and perfectly baked. Excellent service, a must stop every time we go to Waikiki! Absolutely delicious

Johnny T.

Yelp
6 stars if I could. 1st of all, very delicious cakes. Their basic cakes are amazing and that's all I ever want. So good. Customer service is amazing as well. Communication is easy. I'll go here every time for any kind of special occasion or even a treat for myself. Parking is actually quite easy and plentiful for the most part on the street. It's not in the heart of Waikiki so that helps.

Elle E.

Yelp
This review is definitely overdue but this Kulu Kulu at the Eaton Square location exceeded our expectations! We emailed the store, asking if they could recreate a "very hungry caterpillar" cake that we saw on their website. They were quick to respond and after confirming a few details & pricing, we agreed to move forward with the order. When we recieved the cake, we were pleasantly surprised to find the cute details of the cake/strawberries that had "bite marks". It was a small detail that made a big difference! Flavor of the cake (we chose chocolate) was delicious as always (we frequently purchase their ala carte cake slices). Not too sweet, and the cream is always light & fluffy. We have always loved Kulu Kulu, and would definitely recommend them if you are looking for a personalized cake for any event!
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
Kulu Kulu has a great variety of desserts that will sure to please everyone! Always a fan, I'm so happy that they were open during quarantine time to get special cakes for Mother and Father's Day! Both cakes were their delicious and were a strawberry shortcake decorated for each special occasion. I like that they are taking safety measures: - Must wear a face mask to enter - Only one person/one group can enter the store at a time - plastic partition between customer and worker I will definitely be back to this location again to stop in for some sweet treats!
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Cute little cake shop in Eaton Square. I work nearby and pass on my way to the Food Pantry so today I finally stopped in. The cake always smells amazing so my coworker and I grabbed the Frankenstein mint strawberry cake. The cake was super moist and it was adorably decorated. As we were in there, I saw them prepping a two tiered cake that looked beautiful. I'll definitely stop back if any special occasions come up! For those looking to grab a quick bite, Eaton Square has a parking garage and street parking is also available.
google avatar

Shirley H.

Yelp
Very cute little selection of cakes at this Kulu Kulu location! The workers are very friendly! Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Literally went cake testing here lol My favorite was the ube and matcha moose cake. It was decorated like Frankenstein. We also had a Kona coffee roll, strawberry shortcake, and a guava moose cake. We pass this spot every time we head to the parking garage and finally gave it a chance. I'm so glad we did, amazing!

Yelp
From the start, I was impressed w/ Kulu Kulu. When I realized I had made an error on my internet order, they calmly helped me correct it. I was a little wary ordering Xmas cakes online. I wasn't sure if the cakes would taste as good as they looked on the ad. The reviews were good. But I was still nervous. On Xmas day, I was impressed w/ Aya the general Mgr. Her setup for pickup was away from the main storefront. It was organized and quick. Most importantly, the cakes were well decorated and so delicious. When I left, there was already a long line out front. Thank you Kulu Kulu for a job well done!
google avatar

Aileen M.

Yelp
Stumbled across this bakery during an appointment for TSA precheck. Located in Eaten Square. All the yummy goodness that we ordered were delicious!! Light and fluffy cake and not overly sweet icing/cream filling. Well worth the price you pay. Aside from parking issues (parking garage or metered street parking), I highly recommend this place if you love Japanese style baked goods.
google avatar

Jing Ya W.

Yelp
I used to visit Kulu Kulu more often when they were in Shirokiya but since Shirokiya has been closed and will not be there anymore, I don't frequent Kulu Kulu as often as I used to due to parking. Back to the cakes. I was craving rainbow cake on Sunday somehow and only Kulu Kulu's rainbow cake satisfies my tongue and tummy. So I got a rainbow cake for myself, character cakes for sis & cheesecake for dad since dad loves their cheesecake a lot.
google avatar

JinLing Y.

Yelp
Kulu Kulu is one of my go-to places to get cakes for birthdays or if i am craving something sweet. Unfortunately, their ala moana location is no longer open and they only have this location and the one in Waikiki Royal Hawaiian. I recently made a phone order at this location one day before I needed it for a birthday. The process was very simple and I just needed to provide me cc info over the phone. The cake turned out great and they are even able to write a message on the cake. My favorite is their strawberry shortcake but I think i have tried almost everything they offer and it was all yummy. I also really like thief coffee jelly drinks as well.
google avatar

Anela W.

Yelp
Went back to celebrate yet another birthday in the family and this time we tried the chocolate cake! The taste of chocolate was not overpowering but noticeable and the cake was still light and fluffy-like similar to its sister cake, the strawberry shortcake! I loved it! It definitely hit the spot. Make sure to start a point card because you will get a stamp for every $5 you spend. I had a filled up stamp card to use on this visit so I used it on this chocolate cake ($10off your entire purchase). The original total for a 7' chocolate cake came out to around $39 (not including tip) however it was brought down to $29 with the stamp card. When I included tip the total came out to around $35, so not too bad! Honestly for the quality and taste of the cake that you are purchasing, I think this is definitely worth it. This is my number one spot I go to whenever there's something to celebrate!
