70 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I found a casual, modern Japanese all-day restaurant in Hawthorne Crossings offering an extensive menu from sushi and specialty rolls to bento boxes, ramen, udon, yakisoba, and rice bowls topped with beef teriyaki, curry chicken, and salmon poke, plus drink specials like hot sake night and a daily happy hour with $3.50 beers." - Candice Woo

There wasn't waiting time, but it was a little congested in lunch time on Friday. It shows that the restaurant is poplar. As it shows, a Tempra Soba I ordered is great. As same as Japanese one. Especially Tempra are awesome! There were some Japanese customers, I know they and me want to eat Japanese quality soba and we can take it here in affordable price. The board outside the entrance shows the "lunch special" but there wasn't it on a menu. (Tempra Soba $15.03)

Google
This one of our favorite sushi restaurants when we’re the area. This time we got the tempura vegetable roll and salmon tempura roll. Both were delicious but the salmon tempura roll is 10/10. Highly recommend. And they had some new import beers from Japan. The yuzu was refreshing and crisp.

If you're looking for delicious Japanese and Korean-fusion classics, fast and friendly service, and affordable prices, we highly recommend visiting Kumi! As native San Diegans and true foodies, we were impressed by how the owner revamped the space with a modern, cute aesthetic. The staff — including the young manager — are always attentive, welcoming, and on point. We love their rolls, appetizers (the best tempura — perfectly crispy and flaky!), and the Kalbi is absolutely fire. Great vibes all around. Highly recommend!

Google
Staff are very welcoming. Sushi is good as well. Lots of variety of rolls. Better than the AYCE sushi spots in the area. Have to mention Josh our server. He was great and provided great service to us. Thank you Josh!

Google
I was in the mood for something flavorful and this place did not disappoint. The spicy seafood Ramen was DELICIOUS!!! I was initially taken back by the spiciness but once I adjusted (and it cooled down a little), I was very delighted. The service was very quick and the staff was very attentive.

Google
Friendly sushi place in the Claremont area, with good parking options, which is an important consideration for the area. The ambience is a bit basic and the sushi was sort of to match - not flashy, but good. The rice was a bit more chewy than I like and the fish, though generously portioned, could be chunky in parts. The Agadeshi tofu was made of soft tofu, which was unusual.

Google
Everything was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed the Tonkatsu Curry and spicy garlic edamame (not pictured because I immediately dug in lol). My mom really enjoyed the Crispy "no rice" roll, and she's not as versed/adventurous as I am when it comes to Japanese food/sushi. The staff was great, attentive, and efficient. So glad I finally made it to try out. Will definitely be back soon to try more of the menu! ☺️

Yelp
Kumi Cafe has become one of my favorite places to eat. The vibe is always good, and Josh, one of the waiters, makes the experience even better. He's super friendly, and just makes the experience feel better for everyone. The customer service is amazing everyone there is so kind. The food never disappoints. The jalapeño poppers are always a hit, and the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen is my go to bowl. It's warm, and spicy good!. Kumi Cafe is a spot I always look forward to eating at. It's an easy place to recommend for a meal with family or friends.

Jasani M.

Yelp
The service here is amazing, you're greeted immediately upon entry with a very friendly welcome, and the staff are very attentive. It's very relaxing ambiance, very fitting for conversation. The food is amazing and always made to your liking, everything is super enjoyable

Yelp
Kumi Sushi has a great atmosphere and the best bento boxes on convoy. I love going in for a lunch special, relaxing study spot. One of the servers, Josh, always brings a pleasant energy. He brought me my drink before I ordered it!

Yelp
Kumi Sushi has become our go-to spot whenever we're in San Diego. The food is consistently fresh and flavorful, with a great variety of rolls and options for everyone. The staff is always welcoming, and the atmosphere is both modern and kid-friendly, especially for Pokémon fans. It's rare to find a sushi restaurant that checks all the boxes for both adults and kids, but Kumi Sushi delivers every time. M-Su 11am - 9:30pm Lunch Specials & Happy Hour Free Parking

Yelp
My friend hates Kumi, but I think it is solid for Americanized Japanese food. I usually get the katsu curry as a bento, I think about $20ish depending on what items you pair with the entree. My favorite is the tempura and salmon sashimi. The curry does have a lot of potatoes for some reason and is a bit thinner than I like, but decent flavor. I thought I remembered the katsu being thicker and crunchier, but it is still okay. Parking can suck on weekends since it is in the same lot as Mitsuwa.
google avatar

Gino Q.

Yelp
first impression, the atmosphere is decent. went in during 4pm and was fairly busy, once seated, the food was actually quite neat to look at, rolls were good, especially the chicken curry. japanese beer was served nice and cold also. ordered -samurai -chicken curry with rice -tokoyaki -sapporo beer
google avatar

Yelp
I've gone to Kumi Sushi many times for both dine in and takeout, and it never disappoints. The place is clean, the staff is super friendly, and the fish is always fresh. The prices are great, and there's always plenty of parking. My go to is the salmon and yellowtail roll - Delishhh!
google avatar

Danelle W.

Yelp
The EPA Roll was delicious--hands down one of the best sushi rolls I have ever had! We enjoyed three rolls and they were super fresh. Clean, bright spot with friendly service; our food came out quickly even with a crowd. A great San Diego sushi stop--definitely coming back!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Fist time trying this got the Finding Nemo Roll and EHA. Both are super yummy! The atmosphere is really nice and it's right next to the sushi market.

Yelp
It was a really cute mom & pop type of cafe/grill and we decided to stop by for dinner to let the traffic die down. My husband and I have been here once before, but since we're not in the area much, we haven't been. My husband and I both got bento boxes and the portions were perfect! I wanted to try a roll, but I was so full. The sashimi I had in the bento box was so fresh that it melted in my mouth. Highly recommend and will be back!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Still a 10/10 after all this time for me! Service is still great, the fish is still fresh in their rolls, and I've tried more of their menu over the few years! I'm not the biggest fan of teriyaki chicken bowls, but theirs is incredibly solid.
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
The service here was very good & quick! The sushi was good but NOT amazing. We also had the octopus app. The octopus was way too chewy but the ball itself was good. The establishment was nice & clean. I dont think I will be back because there are so many sushi places to choose from.
google avatar

Mileni C.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time today and HOLY SUSHI it is amazing. I've been to many sushi places in my day and this has been by far THE BEST. Like if you haven't been here you haven't lived. The service was great, the sushi ( I got the wild child and some crispy shrimp one ) was SOOOOOO good. It is also so cute and clean in here and it it so well decorated for the holiday season. Also, the salmon bento box was beyond description because e the salmon was just so perfect and cooked to perfection
google avatar

Yelp
KUMI is in a big strip mall, so there's plenty of parking available. The restaurant has a good amount of seating inside and can accommodate small and large groups. My family made a reservation since we were a large group. The wait staff was quick and attentive, and our food was brought out quickly. The menu has a big variety from bowls to sushi to bento boxes. I ordered the tempura udon and the portion size was fairly large. If you're in the mood for Japanese and in the area, KUMI is worth a try!

Yelp
Today we want some Japanese food. It's was busy But our drinks came out quick We ordered edamame we received our edamame But it was so hard and thick skin That's the only reason for the 4stars The 3 of us enjoy our early dinner I think it's Linerr Lol in between lunch and Dinner Our food came to our table in no time Looked super good and enough salad dressing too On our salad with rice I got the Mix Tempura And 2 sesame chicken Chicken was dusted with panko and season very good with lots a good spices and fried to golden brown What a good taste and tender chicken My veggie battered perfectly very lite, and crispy too My shrimp was small but battered good I just wish for big shrimps that my only complaint It was busy with large parties but the chefs had under control They were very attentive to us and friendly
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
Not deserving of the phony 4.5 stars barely passed AYCE quality.. server was o joke .. had to ask for everything.. my wife said the salad dressing and everything was tasteless... the 2 rolls I had was nothing special.. I get better sushi in Las Vegas.... I went out of my way to get here.. and will go out of my way to never come back.. and the music playing was too loud.. not a good environment to enjoy a meal!!!! LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME

Yelp
Kumi Café is easily one of our favorite spots. The service is always friendly and fast, and the food is consistently excellent. Today we had the Korean short rib, bento box with gyoza and California roll, and the tuna poke bowl -- everything was flavorful, fresh, and perfectly made. I usually skip California rolls, but theirs completely changed my mind. My husband said his poke bowl was refreshing and delicious. We've also had the sashimi and chicken katsu curry on previous visits -- both are amazing. The curry is rich and comforting, and the sashimi is fresh and generous. The vibe is clean, casual, and welcoming. If you haven't tried this place yet, go -- it never misses!

Yelp
Perfect lunch specials. 3 fat half rolls or bento box lunch specials. Very personable staff. Fast service and clean inside. All the items tasted fresh. Bento box items were not greasy and maintained perfect crisp.

Yelp
Our local go-to spot when craving simple, inexpensive but yummy Japanese food. This small eatery has quick, friendly service. Nothing fancy but lots of menu selection, from typical Japanese appetizers to sushi rolls (good size portions) to tasty ramen noodles, and entrees you would generally find at a Japanese restaurant. We love their chicken katsu entree, which they changed to a crispier, lighter version. So much better! Highly recommend! Overall, a neat place to get good food without waiting or worry of being noisy and overcrowded.

Yelp
Kumi Sushi--solid spot for a lunch break while waiting on my car. Ambiance was up to date, valentines themed. $16 bento box special? Not bad. Greeted right away, got some water, and the service was great. The bento was decent, nothing mind-blowing, but it got the job done. Didn't try the sushi this time, but I'll be back to see what it's all about. Stay tuned.

Yelp
"I'm Kookoo for Kumi!" This place is cozy, clean and customer service is warm and stellar. From the sushi to the cold soba noodles it's all very fresh and full of flavor. Be sure to add this spot to your go to list. Lunch specials are very good; lots of variety and the prices are very reasonable. The bulgogi is really good too.
google avatar

Linford E.

Yelp
Located in the busy Mitsuwa shopping center right next to Starbucks. The parking can get dicey, but not as bad as closer to Mitsuwa. There's plenty of comfortable seating inside. One small critique is there is not of decorations inside, but not too big of a deal for me. Other than that, the food was good and the portion sizes were reasonable. All in all, not a bad lunch option, but with all the great options near by, it's hard to say if it's worth another visit in the near future.

Yelp
Service was great! We were seated promptly and our order was taken before too long. Everyone was very nice and attentive. The establishment itself was clean and the menus seemed in good shape. There's a good variety of rolls - we ordered 4 total. The sunset was really good, I would certainly recommend that one. The dragon and caterpillar rolls were okay. Small portions of eel and the avocado seemed a little slimy. But not a bad flavor overall but not something I'd be eager to order again. The albacore special was really ...weird? It came with a very large pile of bland onion rings and the albacore tuna was not good. If it wasn't for the albacore roll, we would have given this 4 stars but the albacore roll was such a miss for us. I might give it another try because of how great the service was, but the food didn't "wow" us.

Yelp
Delicious food, great prices, and amazing service! Huge shoutout to Josh for being super attentive and on top of everything--we felt so well taken care of. We started with the baked mussels and spicy edamame, and wow... so flavorful! The katsu bowl was perfectly crispy and drenched in sauce (just how I like it ), and the beef bulgogi was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. We seriously loved everything! Already planning to come back to try the sushi next time. Also, the Pokémon decorations gave the whole place a fun, nostalgic touch--such a cute vibe. Definitely a hidden gem--don't sleep on this spot! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Loved everything we got! Server was attentive and very nice. Food came out quick and did not disappoint! Plenty of space inside, came on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn't busy. Also noticed they have happy hour Monday through Friday from 11-2 for bento boxes, which also looked delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
We were in the market near by and decided to try this sushi place. We didn't have high expectations but this place surprised us. First of all, the customer service is great. They are very nice and friendly. Food came out really fast. We got Omega 3, crunchy shrimp, baked mussels, seaweed salad, Nemo sushi. All of the food is god. Will definitely come back here. The place is clean.

Yelp
3.5 Tucked in the heart of Kearny Mesa--San Diego's Asian food paradise--Kumi Sushi Cafe is your quintessential SoCal sushi joint. It's cozy yet spacious enough, family-run, with diner-style seating and a laminated menu that could double as light reading for your next flight. Bonus: it's a stone's throw from Mitsuwa and Book-Off, and parking is a breeze. We got seated in no time, which is always a win. We dove into all three sushi lunch bento sets. Each bento comes with 12 pieces (three different rolls, four pieces each) plus a side of miso soup, all for $19.95. The rolls are classic Cali-style--think generous heaps of fish, creamy avocado, a touch of Krab, and a drizzle of sauce for that finishing flair. Heads up: the sauces lean a bit sweet, which might not be everyone's vibe, but the fish was fresh, and the portions hit just right. Service? Quick and friendly. The vibe? Very local, which is exactly how I like it. I'll definitely be back to tackle those endless laminated menu pages--sushi rolls galore and beyond!

Yelp
This spot has been open for 3 years now. The last time I went here was when it was a different name. They did a great job updating the interior and doing an overhaul on the menu. It's really nice and bright on the inside. Sushi roll menu comes with photos and descriptions. The staff is really nice. When we first arrived there was only one person working the front. It was quite busy for just one person, but he did an awesome job and was very friendly. I had the samurai roll and it was really good. We also tried jalepeno poppers and edamame. Friends had the seafood upon and korean short ribs. All the food was delicious. Soju and hot sake were good too. Nice spot definitely would come again.

Yelp

Yelp
If I could I would give this place 100000 stars, Iabsolutely love their food and their chefs are amazing. Service always great and the environment so cozy. Thanks for the delicious food and I hope you guys keep the amazing work. Can't wait to pay another visit

Yelp
Lunch at KUMI Sushi Grill was really nice! The restaurant was really clean, bright and had great decor. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The menu was packed with great options! From Bulgolgi to Tofu, KUMI has it all. I had the Mixed Tempura Bento Box that came w/miso soup & 4-5 pcs of shrimp tempura & veggies [$14.50]. Added a couple of items: Cali roll [$2.50] & 3 pieces of sashimi (chose yellowtail) [$5.50] and was pleasantly surprised at how good everything was! One small complaint was that the sashimi tasted a little watery. I guess it's cause they keep the fish on top of ice or something cold? IDK, but it was somehow watered down. I should also mention that the sushi roll we ordered Caterpillar [$15.50] did come out before the Takoyaki [$5.95] app. Both tasted really good regardless of the order they came out, but if you order an app, we assume it'll always come out first. Solid meal at Kumi Sushi. Will visit again to try more of their menu. Parking is plentiful, but can get packed at peak times. See ya soon!

Yelp
A few friends and I tried Kumi out a little while ago and it was delicious! I love the inclusion of the vegan tuna and everyone was very impressed by it! The staff were super nice and we all had a great time. Definitely an underrated spot!

Yelp
Super delicious . Both sushi & Also got chicken ramen but loved it had good veggie and good flavor. Make sure to get spicy it makes a difference . & the ramen bowl was huge! Also our Male waitress was very nice & polite . Good customer service.

Yelp
I really LOVE the sushi here (maybe my favorite roll in SD), but unfortunately it was just way too expensive. $18 for 6 bites... The service is great though. Parking can be tight.
google avatar

Yelp
Was dropping off DVDs at BookOff ('tis the season to get rid of stuff) and they said it would take 45 minutes to go through them so I stopped by this place for a quick lunch, which is across the parking lot. Greeted right away and ordered the Combo 1 lunch special which was four pieces each of a shrimp tempura roll, one with seared salmon on top and spicy tuna inside, and one with tuna on top plus miso soup for $19.95. One of the combos or the bento box is a good idea if you want some variety. They have plenty of options and everything I had was tasty. It turned out to be the perfect spot for me because as I was wrapping up, I got the text that they were ready for me back at BookOff.

Yelp
Kumi Cafe is a nice spot where you can grab a bite of Japanese food. I came here for lunch with a family member. We were promptly greeted and seated with menus. For convenience, they do have QR code menus you can scan with your phone at each table, if for whatever reason you don't happen to get a menu. They have a wide variety of appetizers and dishes from sushi to teriyaki and even (Korean) bulgogi. On this visit, I went with the Teriyaki Beef Bowl and my family member went with the Chicken Katsu Lunch Special and chose the California Roll as the add on. The food arrived in the time you might expect (probably about 15 minutes) and everything looked great. The teriyaki beef was tender and flavorful. I'm glad they added extra teriyaki sauce with the rice. The sauce consistency was appropriately on the thicker side, which is what I am accustomed to and it tasted pretty good. The portion filled the bowl and I had to be careful not to spill anything over the side of the bowl. The chicken katsu was perfectly crispy and it came with a dipping sauce on the side which was flavorful. The California Roll was okay (at best)... bland and not very enjoyable. I think a grab and go California Roll from Mitsuwa or Nijiya probably scores better. This place was very busy. I was concerned about the server because she was by herself. She was taking care of 8 tables by herself. About 15-20 minutes after we arrived and ordered, another server showed up to help the lone server out. Service was okay, it was pretty busy so not totally unexpected. Kumi Cafe was clean... clean tables, menu, utensils, dishes, etc. Parking in this shopping center can become difficult to find during peak hours. Kumi Cafe is located right next to Starbucks and is in the same shopping center as Staples and Mitsuwa. I think we would come here again and maybe even become regulars here. Overall a good experience. 4 / 5: Food 3 / 5: Service 4 / 5: Cleanliness 3.7 / 5: Overall (rounded up to 4)

Yelp
Amazing lunch special, incredible service and delicious food, great music in the background as well!!! What more could you want in a quick spot for lunch.

Yelp
Pretty solid overall. Got the EPA roll, salmon tempura, and dragon roll. All of them were pretty tasty.

Yelp
Came to treat a friend for a birthday dinner. They had a nicely decorated Christmas tree as you entered which you can also see from across the parking lot. We were greeted promptly and were seated by the kitchen swinging door. Not sure if other tables were available but glad there wasn't a wait for a Saturday evening, We ordered hot #GreenTea #CaliforniaCutRoll #RainbowSpecialtyRoll #ChickenYakisoba and was treated to #IceCreamTempura It was all pretty tasty Service was very attentive, prompt and nice. We were the last customers but they said no rush and to take our time
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed the Tonkatsu Curry and spicy garlic edamame (not pictured because I immediately dug in lol). My mom really enjoyed the Crispy "no rice" roll, and she's not as versed/adventurous as I am when it comes to Japanese food/sushi. The staff was great, attentive, and efficient. So glad I finally made it to try out. Will definitely be back soon to try more of the menu!

Yelp
My friends suggested this restaurant for our lunch, and I was pleased with my experience here. There are three lunch specials offerings: Sushi, Bento Box, or Ramen. I ordered the Sushi Roll Combo #2. This included the Shrimp Crunch roll, Dragon roll, and Hawaiian roll. All the rolls were fresh. My favorite was the Dragon roll. As an appetizer it came with miso soup. The miso was good. For my beverage I ordered was the Mango Tropical Iced Tea. It had a nice sweetness and caffeine kick. You only get one refill so sip wisely. The servers which all worked together were attentive. Consistently refilling our waters and asking if we needed anything. The restaurant is simple and bright. Lunch came out to $30.00. A little more expensive than what I am accustomed to for sushi yet it was good quality. I plan on visiting again.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for great sushi that doesn't break the bank, this is the spot! My friend and I were craving sushi so we ended up at Kumi for a late lunch. It was post-lunch rush so there was plenty of seating. Our server Josh greeted us right away and recommended his favorite rolls to us. I love asking servers their favorite dishes so we actually ordered two of his recs: the Moonlight and Omega 3 roll. The fish was so tasty! I'm not a huge fan of sushi rolls with sauces but the moonlight was refreshing. My friend and I also ordered the vegetable tempura app that was pretty standard, no complaints. Their hand rolls were also filling and yummy. Our server Josh was super friendly and always checked back in with us to make sure everything tasted good. I'll definitely be back to try the other dishes!!

Yelp
Amazing spot for meat and non-meat eaters alike!! The vegan sushi is all AMAZING I know because I've tried them all. I don't think I could get sick of the food. The ton katsu (real meat) comes highly recommend from my favorite meatasaurus : ) and not to mention the kind and considerate staff! Always chill inside with nice music.

Yelp
Nice, cozy environment with large portions and friendly staff. I always get the soba (cold noodles)!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service. Love the rice-free sushi roll! I ordered one with salmon, tuna, yellowtail and krab wrapped in cucumber. It was delicious! The staff is attentive without hovering and the food comes out fast.

Yelp
Pretty decent experience coming in on a Friday afternoon and the place wasn't busy. It's a small place but the interior is clean and looks new. Ordered something light for lunch as we were hungry but didn't want to be overly full before dinner reservation so we opted to share one roll and their 9 pcs sashimi plate. So far sashimi was good no complaints there as were their finding nemo roll. I really like the wasabi sauce that they have on the side. I want to make it at home. Not a bad spot to come back for lunch!

Yelp
2 years later and Kumi Cafe is still one of my favorite go-to spots for Japanese food in San Diego. Today I had their Chicken Katsu Curry entree and Baked Mussels appetizer. I've had a lot of chicken katsu around San Diego but I kid you not, this was the best and most perfectly cooked one I've had so far. Usually when I have katsu else where the breading falls right off, is overcooked, or there is too much cartilage in the meat but the chicken katsu here was moist, filling and had the perfect amount of crunch. My entree also came with a miso soup and salad. There was so much food I couldn't finish it but perfect to take home and enjoy later. The baked mussels were huge and super filling. I also had a taste of the Miso Ramen and was blown away of how flavorful it was. Even though they aren't known to be a ramen shop I definitely would not skip out on ordering it if you're craving it. You won't be disappointed. Kumi really does it all, from sushi to curry to ramen. I'm so happy to find a one-stop place that serves all my favorite Japanese foods. Lastly, the service here is incredible. Shoutout to Josh and Michelle for providing excellent service and making me feel like family as always!

Yelp
Food and service and ambiance was good! We all ordered the lunch special bento! We had the chicken sesame and teriyaki and salmon teriyaki...all very tasty and fresh. I've yet to have a bad visit here! We also had the hot jasmine tea and lemonade and iced tea and iced green tea. Everyone was happy with the food and service!

Yelp
I came here with my brother. It's right next door to Starbucks. My first time here and I happily will come back. The workers are very nice and the interior of the place is modern and clean. They gave us packaged chopsticks that had their address on it. And a napkin, metal ice water cup, wasabi & sliced ginger in a bowl, and then a soy sauce bowl. I ordered their iced black sesame latte which was only $4.95 which is a pretty amazing price. It definitely had a toasted sesame flavor and you'll have to mix it before you drink it (every time) since it settles. I'm not sure if this was just black sesame and milk, or if it had espresso too. I hoped for espresso but I didn't taste any, the black sesame def overpowered it if it had it. The prices on the menu were REALLY fair and amazing to see in 2024. Even the edamame was under $5. The other place I got it at was $8!! Insane. To eat, I ordered the house salad which came with a delicious creamy ginger dressing. The lettuce was clean and it had red cabbage and julienned carrots. Very yummy and refreshing. I also had the Dragon Roll which came out pretty warm. My brother said he's not sure if it's a good thing, but in my opinion, it was delicious. I was questioning where the soy sauce was for the table -- though it wasn't needed because the plate had some sauce on it already. (Not sure if it was eel sauce or soy). My brother had the Hawaiian Roll and another raw roll. He enjoyed them as well. We will definitely be coming back here with friends and family. I noticed they had vegan options as well! They have ample seating. And the music was so nice. They played ATEEZ and NCT!
