Birthday lunch with my mom and boyfriend. Completely fantastic.
We ordered ALL the food. The waitress even told us, "this is a lot of food!" I couldn't help it. There were things on the menu that I have always wanted to try, plus duck. It's not really my birthday if I don't have chinese duck.
I had scallion pancakes for the first time, and they did not disappoint. A little on the greasy side, but I'm all right with that.
Crystal shrimp dumplings were a letdown. My mom was the only one who liked them. She tends to enjoy shrimpy flavor, but shrimp items seem overpowering to me. The wrapper was on the soft, slimy side. Turns out I prefer my dumplings fried.
Egg custard boa was delicious, but after the first bite, we all decided to save them for dessert. Maybe that's because, in Baltimore, egg custard is a popular snowball flavor. And I have also had several egg custard pies in my life.
My boyfriend and mom had cups of egg drop soup, which is Jeremy's favorite Chinese soup. Neither offered me a taste, so it must have been good enough to hog.
Golden Crispy Beef is on the sweet side. Delicious, but I liked the one I had for my birthday last year at East West Bistro in Glen Burnie (I think, check my older reviews if you're interested) better.
Jeremy ordered Schezuan Chicken as one of his entrees. We loved that the waitress kept checking, "spicy?" And the chef happily obliged. The Schezuan chicken was Jeremy's second favorite dish, which is saying a lot, considering he usually adores duck. Unfortunately, the take away containers did not close easily, or properly, and this one opened in the van and spilled all over the floor. It was good, but not good enough to pick bits of carpet out of our teeth, so no leftovers for us.
Jeremy's favorite was the Double Cooked Pork Belly, which was so spicy it made him sweat. The waitress kept coming over to refill his water glass and give him napkins to mop his forehead. He ate all the pork and brought home the veg (leeks, green pepper and apparently tofu). We ended up mixing it with Mac and cheese. Before you cringe, the veg was WAY too spicy to eat on its own, and I am totally white trash. It was awesome.
My mom ordered the most basic thing: General Tso's Chicken. I was so disappointed with her. A whole menu of new (to us) wonderful items and she got the most American, basic thing. And then she didn't like it as much as the take away place down the street from her. She ate her leftovers herself, though, instead of passing them on to her husband, who has no tastebuds and will eat anything. She said that the spice level upset her stomach that night, and she had to get up several times to use the bathroom.
Beijing duck was incredible. We got it with pancakes, not steam buns. A separate plate with cucumber and spring onion slivers for crunch. There was also some kind of dark sticky sauce that may have been hoisen sauce. They brought out the bones, salt and pepper fried. I didn't expect them to be so delicious. It's a challenge to eat them, but so worth it.
We had all this food and the bill was only $100. Granted, some items were off the lunch menu, so I would recommend you go early enough to pay less so you can try a greater variety of dishes.
I'm so going back, and taking my friends. There's so much more to explore on the menu, and I'm excited to embark on that journey.
