Kung Fu Mama - Review - Covent Garden - London - The Infatuation

"London is like a spoiled only child when it comes to handmade noodle shops and in Kung Fu Mama, it has somewhere hyper-functional for those in need of a swift bowl that’s more satisfying than any meal deal. A fast-casual spot in the middle of Covent Garden, this place is more noodle production line than restaurant, and is primed for a hangry crowd with its touch-screen ordering and high counters for shovelling. You can choose from a few noodle varieties: ‘wavy’ wheat, biang-biang, or rice noodles. There’s also a sloppy (not entirely wrong, but also not quite right) soft shell cab bao, among other things. Stick to the noodles and be safe in the knowledge you’ll be in and out within half an hour, and will have barely broken a tenner. Food Rundown Chicken Thigh Noodles With Ginger & Sesame These dry handmade wheat noodles are available to buy by the pack, but they also come with sliced chicken thigh, cucumber, coriander, spring onion, slivers of ginger, and a glug of chilli oil in a bowl. The noodles have a good bounce and serious chew to them, although the whole thing is sorely lacking in more sauce and flavour. photo credit: Jake Missing Soft Shell Crab Bao This bao looks impressive but it could do with a bit more finesse. The crab is a little squelchy on bite and there’s too much of the cured egg yolk sauce. On another day, it could be great. photo credit: Jake Missing" - Jake Missing

The restaurant has a set-up like a quick grab and go style with some eat-in seats. There are ordering kiosks at the entrance. The service was within reasonable waiting timeframe but it was not fast. The ginger chicken and braised beef both had good flavours and delicious. The noodle and soup weren't hot enough for eat-in. The dried noodle was a bit dry. The shaved ice was good. The dishes are at a good price considered the shop is at central London.

My friends who live in London spoke highly about Kung Fu Mama. Yesterday we visited Chris’s noodle bar and tried the beef noodle soup, cucumber salad, and shaved ice cream in both mango and strawberry flavors. As someone who grew up in Taiwan, my favorite is the 12-hour braised beef. It is incredibly flavorful and tender, just like what I remember from home. I also love the mango shaved ice cream. The passion fruit sauce really elevates the dessert! The whole meal truly satisfied my homesickness. I highly recommend this noodle bar if you’re curious about authentic Taiwanese beef noodle soup or if you’re from Taiwan craving a taste of home.

Tried Taiwanese beef noodles in London and was genuinely impressed. The broth was rich and full of deep, savoury flavour, with just the right amount of spice. The beef was tender and melted in the mouth, while the noodles had a satisfying bite. Portion size was generous, and the dish felt authentic and comforting. Definitely a place I’d return to—highly recommend if you're craving a proper bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup.

The noodles are brilliant. My friend and I tried two kinds of noodles, the beef noodles and themushroom noodles. Personally, I preferred the beef one because the beef was tender and soaked up the broth beautifully. That said, the mushroom was also really fragrant and felt super healthy. We also had a mango slush for dessert, which I absolutely loved. Super refreshing. I tried a chicken bun as well, which was just the right size for someone looking for a light bite or afternoon snack rather than a full meal.

I had the beef noodles and mango shaved ice that were both amazing. Everything was clean and well-organised, and I especially loved the wall display that tells the story of the store. The owners and servers were all so kind and welcoming, which made the entire dining experience feel more heartwarming. I’ll definitely be coming back soon!!

Great amount of toppings, especially considering their price. Beef was tender and well flavoured, and the Mango shaved ice was a mix of sour (cos of passionfruit) and sweetness - very refreshing! Staff were very kind and accommodating. They took my request of no spiciness but some chilli for “colour” seriously and demonstrated that they “listened to my needs” 👍 Simple but cute decoration, clean and tidy dining environment, and convenient location - definitely will visit it again!

Absolutely loved the slow-cooked beef, it was perfectly seasoned, and the noodles were delicious! The bao buns were also great for a quick bite. I really like the concept of combining Chinese cuisine with a salad bar-style setup — it’s a great fusion of Oriental and Western cultures. I’d love to know if they offer a membership for frequent customers, I’d be more than happy to sign up!

Update: They kindly invited us back to give the food another go, and I’m happy to say things were much better this time. I had the chicken thighs with ginger and sesame noodles again, and this time the chicken was much juicier and there was more sauce, which made a big difference. My friend had the noodles with fresh tomato and beef mince, and that one is definitely a favourite. You can really taste how much tomato is in the dish. It’s rich, flavourful, and even saucier than mine, which I love. For sides, we tried the steamed greens, which were fresh and simple. The wood-ear mushroom salad tasted pretty much the same as before, but they explained that the milder seasoning is intentional to appeal to newer or more sensitive palates, which I can understand. We gave the soft shell crab bao another try. It is a bit better this time potentially because they're very freshly made. One thing worth mentioning is that the sauce is on the salty side. It works when you get a full bite with the bun and crab altogether, but on its own, the saltiness can feel a bit intense. I also tried their milk tea this time and, as someone from Hong Kong where milk tea culture is serious business, I can say this one passes the test. It has a strong tea aroma, full of fragrance without any harsh bitterness. All in all, don’t we all love a restaurant that genuinely values customer feedback and makes a real effort to improve? Big credit to them for that. I’ll definitely be going back. Original: Casual spot in Soho with a walk-in, find-your-seat setup and a small, easy-to-navigate menu. We tried the noodles with 12hr beef and Szechuan pepper, the chicken thighs with ginger and sesame, the wood-ear mushroom salad, and two baos (oven-fried chicken and soft shell crab). Sadly, we found the food quite underwhelming overall. The noodles themselves were nice, but both the beef and chicken were very dry, and even with chilli oil added, the flavours felt lacking. The mushroom salad was okay, though it was missing that punchy, vinegary tang we were hoping for. The baos were the biggest letdown—neither had much flavour. The soft shell crab just tasted salty, and the chicken bao was dry as well. That said, the boss was incredibly kind and welcoming. He explained their loyalty reward program, which is a nice touch: one star per noodle order, and after five stars you get a free noodle. A friendly place, but the food could use a serious boost in flavour to match the warmth of the service.
