The Best Bubble Tea in Boston’s Allston Neighborhood | Eater Boston

"Kung Fu Tea has been around Allston since 2013, when this large international chain, with roots in Queens, New York, first expanded to the Boston area. The very customizable menu includes many different types of bubble tea — classic tea options, milk teas, slushes, and more — including clearly marked vegan options." - Karen Wilber

Google
It was a really bad experience. We ordered 2 Taro Milk Teas from Kung Fu Tea Cambridge and this is what we got! It did not even have an ounce of Taro in it and smelled really bad. I have tried Taro Milk tea in multiple shops in the USA and this was definitely not Taro. I don’t know know how they can sell this to us! Really disappointing!

Google
It's a really nice and cozy place that has nice milk tea. Good for students to study at.

Julie Taeko

Google
It’s okay. Not the best. We got the passion fruit iced tea with 25% sugar, but we’ve had better. Still a cute place with many discounts and an okay bathroom.

Derick Coutinho

Google
Had Mango slush, Thai milk boba and Oolong milk boba. All drinks were good. $4.5 for each medium drink. Quite reasonable. Expected to have different flavors with milk boba tea. But did not have them. The person who took the order was not that friendly. He just wanted to get the order done with. There’s place to sit and have drinks inside. It is not handicap accessible

HL

Google
Convenient new location. great study spot as well due to the storage compartments under the seats for backpacks. Got the taro bubble tea. Bubbles were great but the taro tasted different than what I am used to!

Secret Society

Google
The website and flyer on the door says it’s open at 11am. At 11:10am the door was locked. The phone didn’t pick up when called multiple times. We eventually went in after someone came to open the door. The employee told us that there was no boba ready. He didn’t know the new drinks on the menu and was confused when I ordered them. Other people ordered other drinks and he kept saying they weren’t available for a long time. Another customer walked in and the waiter did not come to take her order for over 10 minutes. She kept saying “hello?” and calling for a staff member. Our drinks (4) took over 30 minutes to make. Many other customers were waiting in line that entire time. The drinks weren’t anywhere near yummy enough to offset all this. This wasn’t a one day incident. This happened multiple times. Your establishment is ridiculously understaffed.

Google
Wasn’t too busy, service was fast, tea was pretty good & server was perfectly nice.

Stefano Barbier

Google
Good and fast service. Interior design is cool and clean design. Everything you’d excprct for a Harvard square Kung fu tea location.

Yelp
yummy tea, had a great time with my sister. Tried the mango milk tea. Recommend everyone to visit.

Yelp

Yelp
Great tea place in the middle of Harvard square. A large selection of teas and toppings, and easy customization. Limited space inside, clean interior, fast service. My go-to: matcha lemonade, without any sweeteners or boba. Refreshing and filling. I am becoming a regular

Yelp
Amazing I have never tried Boba Tea before and I will definitely be enjoying again! One of

Yelp
Kung Fu Tea is one of the OG boba spots in my option. This location is one of my favorites to come to when I want a quick drink. It is located in Cambridge close to Harvard square. If you think to drive here be aware that there's not much street parking, I recommend taking the train and walking. The ambiance of this store is very lovely, the space is a good size and very clean. They have a good amount of sitting tables for the customers that do not want to grab their order to go. The service is fast and the customer service is great, employees most definitely keep a smile on their faces. My go to order when I come here is their Oreo slushy with boba. This drink taste amazing and it's perfect for hot days.

Yelp
I remember coming here for the grand opening in February 2020 and then the Covid-19 lockdown right after! I'm so happy that this business is still open after all these years! And I vividly remember this place being one of the first "authentic" bubble tea shops in Harvard square! And now there are so many more! Yay! Recently returned and delighted to find out that they offer B2G1 in the summer afternoon hours. Service was okay, but I think they were just too busy to care. Not 5 stars due to relatively poor indoor air ventilation. CO2 was around 1000 ppm during my stay. They had AC on full blasting, but I think there might not be enough air circulation going on. Also, the entire store is honestly just a little dirty. There was visible dirt on the floor and bench. Could perhaps use a deep cleaning. Love all the allergy friendly labeling and also caffeine-free labeling! Definitely a great spot for students and tourists who need a refreshing drink!

Yelp
I recommend getting the KF milk tea and the taro slush! Great ambience here and it is always a favorite for late night
google avatar

Yelp
Good boba place located conveniently near campus for students. Variety of drink options but I got a standard black milk tea with boba half sweetness and less ice. The half sweetness was still pretty sweet but nonetheless tasty. A few tables inside to hangout or study
google avatar

Qme L.

Yelp
Was surprised to find a KFT so close after my dinner at santouka. The place is small but clean with a few tables for seating. There isn't very much space for a line. I imagine during busy times patrons would need to wait outside. Wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in a stanchion or two. There is a single bathroom available to use if needed. I ordered my usual honey oolong milk tea. It was a bit sweeter than I would've liked even though I asked for 50% sugar. Everything else was consistent with other KFTs I've been to. Solid bubble tea spot!

Jamie M.

Yelp
I always get the strawberry lemonade with pearls. I still wish that kung fu had a non-dairy option before its drinks. I know that all of the milk drinks have milk in them and as someone who can't drink milk it's upsetting. But the strawberry lemonade is what I always go for.
google avatar

Mohammad A.

Yelp
This place is right on the corner of Harvard. If you are not family with KFT, it's in my opinion one of the best boba shops. The mango snow is a must try!
google avatar

Yelp
While on a visit to Harvard, we dropped into Kung Fu Tea for a drink. This is a relatively new franchise that is like the McDonalds of Bubble Tea. We ordered: Hot green tea Taro Milk Tea with Boba Mango Green Tea with Boba The teas tasted exactly the same as the one from New York. That is probably one of the highest compliments a franchise wants to hear. It means that they have great quality control to ensure you get the same taste and experience regardless of where you are. Ambiance/Decor: the interior design is consistent with any other Kung Fu Tea or general bubble tea shop. They even have a gender neutral restroom. Food: the Quality Control is very good. The teas taste just as good as the ones in NYC. TL/DR: if you like the bubble tea from one Kung Fu Tea, you will like it here as well

Yelp
Yum! I'm so excited to have this Kung Fu Tea location so close to campus. It's currently only in the soft opening period (according to Instagram, the official opening date is Friday), so WiFi hasn't been set up yet and hot drink cups aren't available, but I think they will be soon! The location was packed full when I went, but the tea and boba quality was still great. (I got the mango green tea with bubbles and the jelly that comes with the drink and also tried some of the winter melon green milk tea. Both drinks came with a good amount of toppings and were really tasty!) The space looks really nice and is in a great location, and I look forward to coming here a lot. The only downside is that with all the students in the area, I have a feeling that it'll always be busy!
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Visited this location on a Friday afternoon, so it was packed with both college students, high/middle school students just finishing school, and other customers doing work. When you enter, there's not a lot of room to wait in line or wait for your drink, so the entrance can get kind of congested. They have a few tables as well. I ordered the purple yam latte, which is a new drink. Even with a bunch of people waiting, I got the drink in 3 minutes, which was great. I believe this store also takes mobile orders. The yam latte wasn't too sweet and actually did taste like purple yam, which was very unique, I really enjoyed it. Will definitely visit this location again if I'm in the area!

Yelp
Kung Fu Tea is the best bubble tea chain. Perfect for this hot summer day. My favorite is wintermelon tea.
google avatar

Hursuong V.

Yelp
Super busy with all the students and the front waiting area can get very crowded, given that the storefront itself is small. However, they made our drinks very quickly and quality was just as good as all other KFT locations. Limited seating. Great addition to Harvard Square! Try their white grape punch on a hot day!
google avatar

Orawan S.

Yelp
Tiny spot and good to grab and go. In case if you were lucky to get a table, the drinks would come with a nice view!!
google avatar

Saiteja G.

Yelp
Nice spot for a Boba tea!! A typical Kung Fu Tea spot with not a lot of seating available so be prepared to puck and go. It's filled with student crowd all over and quick and easy service.

Yelp
Loved this place! The boba is super tasty and it was really refreshing on a warm spring day.

Yelp
I'm happy that I can find milk tea in Boston. the milk tea tastes great but the bubble is too sweat for me

Alise H.

Yelp
Food--boba is standard, good milk substations for someone like myself with a dairy allergy. Decent prices Ambiance-- is pretty solid. Good music. Clean establishment! Service--the staff at Kung Fu have stood out as particularly unaccommodating and uninviting. One example: On a rainy June 9 2023, at 4:30pm, I ordered a hot chai tea with boba. I specifically asked the server if boba was possible in a hot drink. He assured me this was routine! A few minutes later, he handed me an iced drink. I asked for the hot drink I order. He refused. He said I would have to pay a different price for the hot drink because he had mistakenly rung me up for a cold drink. I took the drink, but it rubbed me the wrong way in the context of the staff's usual callousness. In the future, I'll be more likely to go to my other favorites--Dado Tea or Moge tee. Or, I'll skip Kung Fu boba entirely and pick up a Tai-yaki from Hokkaido Ramen or a waffle from Zinneken's. - One Harvard Square Dweller's experience

Yelp
Bruh I just got a drink and there was A HAIR IN MY DRINK BRO I WANT TO THROW UP. WTF? I want a refund I bought this sh*t 5 minutes ago and there was hair in it when I drank it at home. How do you even get hair into a SEALED drink? Disgusting, nasty, unacceptable. GROSS. Goodbye forever you are the reason I redownloaded this app and gave every establishment that's ever been disgusting a bad review. Thanks for reminding me Yelp exists

Yelp
We used their app to make our order - they told us when it would be ready (in the app). We showed up to a busy store, no employee visible, but our paid-for order was waiting for us on the counter, so we picked them up & left without seeing any workers - I'd definitely recommend using their app ahead of time, b/c it seemed like there was only one employee, who must've been super-busy and unable to man the cash-register. ANYWAY. I ordered the Kung Fu Milk Tea with Boba (Earl Gray [Bergamot] with Milk) -Less Sugar (70%0 & Less Ice - and it was DELICIOUS - perfect amount of sweetness, and the BOBA themselves were SOOOOOO GOOOOODDD! Chewy & Sweet - based on their app's description, it seems like all their Boba is cooked in brown-sugar, which matches the national chain's description for the "Wow Bubbles," which this store's app didn't seem to offer - so my theory is, they only offer the Wow Bubbles (cooked in Brown Sugar, and Not rinsed, served with the brown sugar syrup still on it), and not the usual one (cooked in honey, and then rinsed - bc of their app's description & the delicious brown sugar flavor). My companion ordered the Taro Milk Tea with Boba - More Sugar (120%), and it was just as DELICIOUS... Very strangely, both teas seemed to have the same amount of sweetness... which is odd, b/c 70% and 120% have a 50% difference (sort of). I mean, don't get me wrong, they were Perfectly Sweet, but it seemed not to matter what level sweetness was ordered - they know the ideal sweetness, and make it that, regardless. My one theory is that b/c their printer for the order labels was streaky, and so both of our stickers, cut-off the % of sweetness (mine just said, "Less swe - %" and his said, "M e - %" that they couldn't tell what we ordered, so they just gave us both the default 100%... Idk, but it was delicious. The Boba, in particular, were perfectly chewy and brown-sugar infused - just perfect. I'm not what to order next time b/c both of ours were perfect, but might have been the 100% sweetness (given long diatribe above). We will be back, and likely to order the exact same thing, just to see if our original order results in the exact same sweetness again... Whatever, we loved it, never saw an employee, and highly recommend their boba milk teas. Of note, I had been worried, before I tasted it, that the Kung Fu Milk Tea (Earl Gray [Bergamot] was going to be too strong, esp the Bergamot, but it was perfect - not too overwhelming with the Bergamot, more like a hint of it. tl;dr - Order the Large Kung Fu Milk Tea with Boba - Less Sugar (70%), Less Ice (possibly no ice next time), & the Large Taro Milk Tea with Boba - More Sugar (120%), No Ice. Sweet Chewy Boba Happiness.

Yelp
After having spent 25 years of my life in California, the Boston/Cambridge boba/milk tea scene is absolutely dismal in comparison. That being said, KFT (which is also a 2 minute walk from my house ) gives some life to the boba community over here. I've had the matcha milk cap, honey milk cap, and more regular drinks like their classic Kung fu black milk tea, their almond milk tea, Thai milk tea, and winter melon green tea. And all of the ones I've had were all great! Boba is always cooked perfectly - not too soft and mushy, but also not undercooked (looking at you, Abide ). KFT also has nice toppings that most places here in Cambridge/Boston don't have, such as the egg pudding, different jellies, and popping boba and crystal boba. And as with most places you can specify varying levels of sweetness/ice. Their regular is a good size and their large is friggin huge!! The staff has always been very nice :) the place is clean, and the place isn't always crowded. You typically can place your order and be out of there in 15 minutes. The only thing I would complain about is that I wish they had some food and snacks! I always end up with a craving for something salty while sipping on a sugary icy beverage. Also, they don't seem to have a loyalty program- a buy-8-get-one-free card or something would be nice ;) or detrimental to my health, however you want to look at it. In any case, if you're looking for some good boba and you're in the area, KFT is one of your best bets. I'd say having high maintenance college students around does pressure at least a boba joint to product results

Yelp
There's currently a special to get two bubble teas with pudding, but my partner and I were told we couldn't get the special because we didn't have the code on our Kung Fu Tea app. However, nowhere on the official Instagram page that advertises this special or on the site that the Instagram page links to says anything about needing the app or a special code. The cashier told us that we would be able to find it on the app, but the app had nothing. I was very disappointed with this customer service, and I feel like the Instagram page should be consistent with what the cashier will ask you, and that the app should have the offer easily accessible if it's necessary to access a special.

Yelp
I'm so glad Harvard finally has its own Kung Fu Tea. It's always a journey for me to get to Davis or go downtown when I'm craving some of their milk tea options. My go to are the hot oolong milk tea and the green milk tea sometimes with with bubbles or pudding. I ordered a plain ooling milk tea alone and it was ready within 10 minutes (there were a couple people ahead of me in line) This location is small with a good amount of seating space. I expected it to be jam packed since a lot of college students love bubble tea but surprisingly it wasn't.
google avatar

Yuwen X.

Yelp
I ordered a taro milk tea but it tastes nothing like taro. And it's too sweet... this never happened at other Kung Fu tea Update: It's a fact that the taro milk tea at Harvard was too sweet and no taro flavor (1st v; however, they do have great customer service and reached out to me immediately. My second visit, the drink was great like all others I had in the past.
google avatar

Raunak D.

Yelp
I like that the bathroom door blends into the wall. Good customer service. The seating area is not well kept. But that's okay I don't mind. Close to Harvard and wigglesworth dorm.
google avatar

Hurnan V.

Yelp
When I first heard that Kung Fu Tea has come to Harvard Square, my jaw dropped to the ground. As a former college student here, I painstakingly recall that in order to get "good" boba, one had to venture all the way out to Allston or Chinatown -- or go to BTS on JFK if you're in a pinch. Had Kung Fu Tea been around when I was student (in fact, it's super near my old college freshman dorm!), I think I would have gained the Freshman150... Anyways, Kung Fu Tea is a pretty well-known national boba chain, but their quality is something that I can stand by and count on where ever I go. My go-to is the kung fu milk tea with boba, less sugar, and less ice. The boba is always very chewy and with the perfect sweetness level, not soft or soggy like some others. The milk is always very creamy. It's awesome how the quality is so consistent from location to location - you know exactly what you are getting! At this location, there's ample seating inside, which makes it a perfect place to work or catch up with friends. Harvard Square is so lucky to have gained Kung Fu Tea - I'm sure it will be a treasured place for college students and visitors alike for years to come.

Yelp
It was amazing place! clean, friendly staff and the most important delicious !!! Perfect for a fresh spring day

FaraSouls S.

Yelp
A spacious place to have your bubble tea the staff where really friendly and they had variety of options to order from .. will definitely come back to try more drinks.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
0/2. No ice in the taro milk boba tea (?), ordered just a hot coffee ($5), guy filled it with sugar and milk then put a solid black cover on it so nobody knew until it was delivered. Guy was the only one working and other employees were on the phone outside while it was busy. Manager should run the cameras back.
google avatar

Maryon N.

Yelp
Plain and simple: loved it. I had the bubble milk tea with soy and their milk powder is DAIRY FREE!! So this place really deserved the stars (from a lactose allergic person). Very creamy too
google avatar

Jennah D.

Yelp
Got them last night for the first time was amazing. They have lactose free milk as an option and that in of itself is so nice. Also price is the same with the milk.
google avatar

El S.

Yelp
Soooo good! Highly recommend the matcha milk cap. I got it with 50% less sugar and it was just enough sweetness. Plus i added boba which is basically sugar lol. They were fast too!

Yelp
I haven't been to a Kung Fu Tea in forever and I'm a huge fan of their boba (always so fresh!) so when I was walking around Cambridge and spotted this location I had to stop in. At this location you could go in and order although I think some are order ahead on the app only. They were busy making orders (several were waiting to be picked up) so it took awhile for anyone to wait on us. We decided to try my favorite the honey oolong milk tea and then we tried the pineapple refresh iced tea. The waiting area is very cramped. It looked like a line formed outside for people trying to get their items so we went out and waited. It was hard to tell when ours was ready as many looked exactly like what we ordered so we did have to keep going in to check. I wonder if there is a better system they can use so you don't have people crowded outside and not sure when their order is done.. it was orderly but everyone was a bit confused and unsure about going back in to check. My oolong honey milk tea was delicious. Can I say again how much I love that boba?! The pineapple drink was refreshing but very sour. I also didn't love the chunks of pineapple which we stupidly combined with boba (that wasn't a great combo). With some many awesome teas though I would definitely return and try something else! You never know if you'll love something if you don't take the change and try it.

Yelp
I am pretty disappointed and frustrated by the service I received during my visit to the Davis Square Kung Fu Tea last Friday. I recently learned that there was a Kung Fu Tea on my way home from work and have stopped by a couple times to grab a drink before starting my commute home. While I previously would order in store, I recently switched to using the app to place my order before I leave work so that my order will be ready once I arrived at the store. Each time that I've ordered, I've had to wait a minute or two after arriving for my order to be ready however the wait time during my last visit was unacceptable. As shown in the pictures, my mobile order was placed at 5:19. I arrived to the store at the suggested time and waited about 15 minutes for my order of 1 beverage to be ready. The wait was frustrating but the parking ticket that I received while waiting so long for my order defiantly taught me to pay for 30 minutes worth of parking next time and not believe the times quoted by the app.
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Kung fu tea is always consistent for me. I've tried other boba shops all over Boston and those others have their good and bad days. But kung fu tea is always really solid in my opinion. I haven't gotten their milk tea in awhile but their fruit teas are always my go to. The orange green tea is made with fresh orange juice. The grapefruit green tea is another made with fresh grapefruit. Lately I've been enjoying their mango black tea. Tip! The mango black tea does come with mango jelly which compliments the drink really well.
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
Got a coconut milk tea and was not a fan. Of the other drinks I've had from different KFT locations, none have really stood out for me. I do enjoy the texture of the boba however. Overall, neutral experience.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
This place was SO needed in Harvard Square. It's just as great as all the other Kung Fu Tea shops around -- quick service and delicious drinks. For a small space, they also did a good job creating seating. I will be hear many, many times since it is dangerously close to campus. I'm hyped!
google avatar

Aislinn C.

Yelp
Good tea shop but could have a better selection. I went during their soft opening and the place was chaotic (I guess Harvard students have never had boba? That's how a lot of them acted.) and the line was outrageously long. For reference, I waited in line for over an hour at 5PM on a Wednesday. There were maybe 20 people ahead of me but most everyone was walking out with trays of drinks, making the wait much longer than it should have been. By the time I got to the front I ordered the milk tea with boba. The drink I ordered was nice and smooth and the pearls were soft and fresh. I'll certainly go back, but maybe I'm a day when there won't be as many students.

Claire C.

Yelp
They were great and accommodating. They helped me place a big order and even gave me a discount for it. The assistant manager was really helpful in making sure it got delivered to my location on time and was making sure he got all the information. I really recommend this store to everyone!
google avatar

Shonelle F.

Yelp
I love this place. I've only been to two locations: Boston (Symphony) and Maryland (Across the lot from The Mall in Columbia). I've only had the Cocoa Cream Wow Milk Cap, and it's delicious. I'm a big fan of sweet & salty. The combo of the warm sweet boba and salty milk cap tastes amazing together. I get it with less ice to help retrieve the remaining boba. I need to venture out and try other drinks on the menu. I might try the lemonade the next visit.

Sangam M.

Yelp
We got a tarp milk tea and it was not good. There was no taro flavor : ( but the other stuff was ok
google avatar

Kai L.

Yelp
The Oreo Wow & Red Wow ($5.50 w/o tax) are good. They eat like a meal. The boba is really soft and appears to be the popular brown sugar kind. Service is quick and prompt.
google avatar

Henry V.

Yelp
Kung Fu has the best boba in Boston. They include a large variety of milk tea, juices, and yogurt drinks. The boba balls are good quality with a nice chew. The service is respectful and sweet. The place has a good space to sit whether it is to hangout or do work. Will come back

Jamie M.

Yelp
it is good but they did not make me aware of an allergy. that could've ended up bad but otherwise, it is good.
google avatar

Conrad K.

Yelp
This is one of the only bubble tea places In all of Harvard square and it is definitely the best, I went here right after lunch and the Taro slush is a great mid-day beverage, The large was big, but I finished it all in about half an hour. If you want a good bubble tea, this is definitely a good place to go.
google avatar

Olivia M.

Yelp
Nasty it is only jelly boba but next time I'm not getting the boba part other than that it is good
